My family looooove this place! Hands down the best afterschool, weekend treat, craving something yummy after work spot. The decorations are bright and so cute, the service is great and so many items to choose from.

    My names Mitch O. Acana.

I'm going for paletas, you can come, do you WANNA? You said you maybe would, so decide, are you GONNA? Popsicles might be fun, but Paletas are FUNNER Especially when you get them here at MICHOACANA! WHAT! People call me Mitch, but my full name is Mitch O. Acana. People think I've had work done (on my ice cream, so to speak), but I have Natural Ice Cream if you know what I mean. So this little Austin gem has absolutely phenomenal paletas, and very cheap as well. It's situated way up in the Latin neighbourhood of Austin in the far north, well away from downtown and the area where all the hipsters and collages are. Barbie and I have nothing but great things to say about the paletas and delights at this amazing and great-value place. It's actually one of the better paleta places I've been to anywhere. Out of dozens and dozens, I'd easily put it in the top 5 nationwide. So in conclusion, we loved our paletas, and I love the decor as well. Barbie also is a huge fan and I'm sure we'll be back in the future on many occasions. And I'll stand by that, or my name isn't Mitch O. Acana.

Vanessa helped us navigate a totally new ice cream layout. There's premade ice cream/fruit bars/ices and scoop ready vats of ice cream and fruit ice cream. The technicolor bubblegum ice cream is so yummy! And I got a pint of "piñon" ice cream. I think I heard it's pine cone/nut ice cream. It's so yummmmmmy!!

This is my favorite Mexican dessert spot. This place has everything -- ice cream, popsicles, mangonadas, bananas dipped in chocolate, and so many other Mexican treats. They have a wide variety of unique flavors, including dairy-free options. I've loved the strawberries and cream, coconut, and oreo popsicles. My boyfriend raves about their gansito ice cream. To top it off, their prices are super reasonable (each popsicle is only $2.85!). My only tip would be to avoid coming close to their closing time, because I've seen them close 30 min early.

So many flavors you just don't see anywhere else!

The fact that this is not a chain is a plus. Add to that fact that he makes everything from scratch is a mouth pleaser. Now throw in that he has ice creams and popsicles you won't find in any grocery store or chain ice cream shop. If you require a glitzy, high profile, heavily advertised and chemical laden ice cream experience then go to the chain stores or pick something up in your grocery store. But if you want ice cream, real ice cream without chemicals in it, then try Michoacana! Your tummy will send you a thank you card. PS. Try the Queso (cheese) ice cream. Just do it!

Tasty authentic Mexican treats. My family moved here from LA. It's hard to find it places like this here. Went here and it feels like home!

This place is absolutely delicious! The man that was working the counter was so nice and kind. They have a variety of Mexican snacks including elotes, auga Fresca, ice cream, Etc. Highly recommend

Regular "paletas" (popsicles), and a few of those frozen cup thingies...

tl;dr summary: This place is a Mexican "Bambu meets Frozen Rickshaw". Cool desserts with flavors you may be familiar with and know/love, but additional authentic flavors you've probably never heard of before (I had to google a couple). Hand-made with love (I assume), and run by friendly, passionate folks. Bring the kids (and cash). Nothing like a friend's random checkin on a Tuesday night to give me the opportunity to learn new things. Many folks around here might assume that "Michoacana Natural Ice Cream" was the dessert arm of a similarly named meat market/grocery store chain that started in Houston in the 1980s and has several area locations. Nope. Instead, it refers to the state of Michoacán in central/western Mexico, known for an abundance of "paleterias" (popsicle shops) and "neverias" (ice cream shops) that long pre-date any Texas grocery chain. Apparently trademarks aren't really a thing in the Michoacán area, and you can see many similar cool/sweet treat shops, all named "La Michoacána". Imagine if all the Starbucks locations here were unrelated, and sold cool treats instead of hot coffee, and you've pretty much got it. In Austin, these treats are often sold by bell ringing street vendors pushing a cart. But now you can find all your old favorites (and plenty of new favorites) in this cute (and air-conditioned) storefront on the other side of the shopping center that includes Taco More. Want a paleta? Gotcha covered, with like 20 flavors. Sure, there's the standards you would expect, like strawberry, coconut, tamarind, etc. But then there's pecan (labelled "Nuez"), and a half-dozen fruits indigenous to Central Mexico I had never heard of before (Nanche? Mamey?). This place is authentic, and doing it right. Then you have your ice cream flavors. Wife is in love with the "bubble gum" (don't judge) which she prefers to a certain 31-flavors chain, as here the ice cream never seems to have an icy edge to it. I've tried the coconut and the Mexican vanilla. I'd say the Mexican vanilla was a touch more subtle than I'd prefer, but still very good. And way cheap. We got two scoops and a medium watermelon aguas fresca (oh, did I mention they have several flavors of aguas frescas?), paying hardly more than we'd pay for one scoop and a mix-in at another local shop that I shall not name, but rhymes with "Lamey's". Want regular nachos? They have that too. Want a serving of elotes (corn covered with spicy and creamy goodness)? Not a problem. The couple working there could NOT be nicer. Our first visit, we walked in minutes before closing time, and their genuine smiles and greetings did NOT reflect someone at the end of a long day's work who just wanted us to be done and gone. They were happy to explain the flavors to us, and point out other popular things they thought we might like. It was all we could do to keep from being offered additional samples, even as it hit 9pm (weekday hours). Next time, wife wants to try that frozen lime thingy in a cup, that they then line with chili powder. (But knowing her, she'll probably get the bubble gum ice cream and another watermelon drink. Bless her heart.) You'll want to buy a bit of everything on your first visit. But you won't be the first to do so. (Good job, Tim Y.!) 4.75 stars.

    Gastro ice cream... holy sh*t!

Have you ever wanted Helote, fruit water, those cool popsicles or Mexican style ice cream in a cute ice cream shop location? Well all your dreams have come true. La Michoacana I thought meant meat market... this is far from it. This place is run by a fun family who opened up what I would call an Oasis in this shopping center. Their ice creams aren't just home made, they're incredible originals... especially one called Gansito... and yes, my pic of it was spell corrected by my English typing phone to say "gastro." Gansito is a snack cake that Hispanic kids had growing up... that my chubby youth unfortunately missed out on... but Im making up for it now thanks to this place! I had the helote which was awesome, the lime fruit water...which was also awesome... and the Gansito and Marshmallow ice creams...which were also awesome. If you're in this part of town... you've gotta come here to try their stuff.. you won't be disappointed. A large ice cream with three huge scoops is $4.75. The small helote that I had which was more than I needed was only $2.75. All wins. Just get here already... but bring cash, because that's all they take.

The three of us each grabbed three flavors (F, E, D--haha, funny, right?) and rated each one with sugary zeal. Roasted Beets & Fresh Mint (F, E) - delicious, subtly minty, with a very creamy, mild beet flavor. I never had such a refreshing ice cream that wasn't sorbet. The mint really made a difference. I'm a huge fan of places that curate exotic flavors (a vegetable, really?) into their menu, which only increased my opinion of this place. Hill Country Honey & Vanilla Bean (E) - one of the smoothest vanilla bean ice creams I've had. It reminds me of a traditional ice milk soft serve. It wasn't the most impressive vanilla ice cream I've ever had, but it was still very good in its own right. Dark Chocolate, Olive Oil & Sea Salt (E, D) - such a great balance to the sweetness of the rest of the ice cream options. I always love little chunks of salt in sweets to cut through the sugary intensity, so this one was an instant favorite. GOAT Cheese, Thyme, and Honey (E, D) - a complete 100% hit. Probably my top, alongside the beets. My BFF said it tasted too much like a meal rather than a dessert and couldn't give it a high rating, but as a charcuterie fan, I know there are plenty of "dessert" cheeses. I mean... cream cheese, for example? But is that really a cheese...? Uhhh. Very Strawberry (F) - a clean strawberry flavor. A bit artificial, but still so great. It far outweighed the Sweet Cream w. Strawberry flavor we tasted later. Cookies & Cream (F) - I never liked cookies & cream before, but this changed my mind. It hits so hard when you get a full spoonful. Probably the only cookies & cream I would eat. My BFF's #1. Chocolate Chocolate (F) - love chocolate? Get this. That's all you need to know. Coffee & Cream (D) - oooh, reminds me of the keto coffee ice cream I had once. Would get again. Coffee notes are always great in ice cream. Was this a STRONG standout? No. But did it do its job? Yes. Sweet Cream w. Strawberry (D) - too creamy for me, not enough strawberry. My top flavors by far are: 1) Roasted Beets & Fresh Mint, 2) GOAT Cheese, Thyme, and Honey, and 3) Dark Chocolate, Olive Oil & Sea Salt. All three were unique flavors that I would absolutely get again. We sat on the little barstools watching the line get progressively longer as the night went on. It was really interesting to see how many people came in for a sweet treat at 11 PM. The atmosphere was pleasant, parking was pretty easy, and while it never got too crowded, the place was surprisingly popular.

Quite busy at 8:15PM on a Sunday! About ten people ahead of us and only two people working so it took about 10-15mins with people asking for samples and such. While we were there, it was always a packed line so it definitely gets really busy from 8-9PM! We got three larges for a total of twelve flavors, a little bit of overlap: Mine: Dark Chocolate Olive Oil and Sea Salt - Really liked this, the bitter saltiness offset the creaminess really well. Coffee with Cream - A very light but roasty coffee, like a light coffee. I liked this!; Goat Cheese, Thyme and Honey - The herbal flavor is more subtle than I expected! Not too sweet, liked this one Sweet Cream & Strawberry - this one didn't stand out much to me Others: Roasted Beets and Fresh Mint - I really liked this one! The beets and mint hit on the back of your tongue, yum Chocolate Chocolate - Very intense chocolate, not too crazy about it though Cookies & Cream - Surprisingly good! I liked this one Very Strawberry - way more strawberry than the sweet cream. I'd recommend this over the sweet cream and strawberry Hill Country Honey & Vanilla Bean - Pretty light, a classic. Thought it was okay. If I had a tier list it would be: 1) Coffee with Cream 2) Goat Cheese 3) Dark Chocolate Olive Oil 4) Roasted Beets and Mint 5) Cookies & Cream 6) Very Strawberry 7) Vanilla Bean 8) Chocolate Chocolate 9) Sweet Cream & Strawberry Overall, a few hits, a few misses, but it was a fun tasting experience. We paid via inKind with no issues, which made it a pretty solid value.

It has about 3 to 4 times as much sugar as it actually needs. In fact, I was physically ill from eating it. Not only does the ice cream itself taste too sugary in the flavors are too cloyingly sweet, but they then want to mix in additional candies and sugar items which blows my mind. I humored them and tried an ice cream with mix ins and was greatly underwhelmed. Everyone who likes Amy's raves about the Mexican vanilla but honestly, that is also way too sweet and tastes like drinking vanilla extract. I can only surmise that there are a lot of folks with unsophisticated palates in Austin, otherwise there would not be so many positive reviews and this place would not be in business.
