This place is awesome! I come to the Micro center off of Rockville pike at least once a month and I am never disappointed. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly, the service technicians care more about fixing your issue than they do about making money, and they always give service with a smile. I was originally driven to micro center when I had a computer issue and best buy was charging $300+ just to look at it. I googled compute repair places and micro center popped up. I walked in and instantly knew this was the place for me. The technicians looked at my computer and fixed the issue for free (diagnostics and small issues they always do for free). I have never had a bad experience at micro center and their prices are always affordable and virtually always cheaper than the competition. If you find a lower price anywhere else, they will match it. I will continue to come back to this micro center and I would greatly advise that if you are in need of technical assistance, a new TV, computer, or really just want to look around and talk to informed techies this is the place. For a few years now, has been my go to place and life saver for computer parts. When I come here, I'm not told by businesssmen dressed up as computer techs that I can visit their online store because they don't stock the part i saw on their site. Why would someone spend the time and money to drive to a store, only to be referred to an online site? Only reason is that they were trained that way. If I wanted to shop using the internet I would've already done research on prices; when I'm visiting a store I'm ready to pick something up. Thanks MicroCenter! Keep it up. This place is terrible. First of all, if you are NOT one of the aforementioned geeks, good luck understanding how things are laid out in the store. For example, what exactly about the term "Knowledge Bar" indicates that this is the department you should go to for repairs? Nothing on the sign does, that's for sure. Once I had asked where to go for repairs at "customer service" (which was the only department I could see that seemed remotely applicable), I went to the Knowledge Bar and had to sit around for a half hour, being studiously ignored by the resident geeks, as they helped others, but didn't even give me a pager, which is what I would need to be serviced at the "bar" (another customer had to tell me). After requesting a pager twice, I finally got one, was served within another 10 minutes. My total wait time at the "bar" was very long-- but no one on the phone when I called ahead of time told me it would be, or suggested a low-traffic time, or to schedule an appointment. Typical complete lack of common-sense customer-mindedness and communication, as I always experience with computer people. Then, the guy who talked to me tried to sell me other services before addressing what I needed for my particular problem, thus confusing me. He looked a little embarrassed when I called him on it. So he then told me my problem (computer won't turn on) was likely electrical, but they would need to run a diagnostic to determine the cause, paid in advance. Fine. He quoted the time it would take as 3-4 days. NINE days later, I called and asked what was up. Not only was my repair not finished yet, they hadn't even STARTED it. No apology, obviously no effort to call the customer with an update. He is now supposed to "take a look at it" and call me back in a couple hours. But I wonder, do they only finish jobs if customers prod them? The employees are obviously indifferent about service or communicating clearly with customers. Maybe they are only interested in selling software and gadgets. If so they should not offer repair services. I went to Micro Center based on Yelp reviews, but perhaps I should have realized that reviewers who were geeking out about the products offered would not be a guide for a technology outsider like me. The problem is, there just aren't many places to get computers repaired. I thought that since this place is a chain, it would at least be professional and organized and fast (more important to me than price, since how am I supposed to know what a good price is for this stuff?). I have been shopping at Micro Center since 2007 (when they opened). I remember coming in for the first time when they mailed out coupons for a free 2GB flash drive. I was pleased with the service and returned. Since then, I have purchased several computers, tablets, computer components, and other electronics I use on a daily basis. They have great prices and great service. The employees are knowledgeable and more than willing to help you when needed. I would definitely recommend this place over their competitors (will not mention any names). read more

Overall I had a good experience. I did find it annoying that when I went in to just get some DVDs, had them in my hand and was then looking at some sleeves, I was asked if I needed help, told that the ones I picked were good and then the sales person proceeded to put his sticker on the DVDs in my hand. I thought to myself, you did not do anything, so why are you putting a sticker on it. Then I also heard employees complaining in the BYOC area. I was in the market for a MacBook Pro Retina last year and decided to stop by the Micro Center in Rockville. I got to the Apple section of the store where I observed a sales associate working with a customer. The sales associate was so rude to the customer in many ways. He was belittling her in so many ways rather than helping her. I continued looking at the MacBooks. I was looking at the system preferences of the computer when the same associate walked by me and said over my shoulder, "What's it say? Says I'm fast doesn't it?" gave me a smirk and walked away and not even helping me. I left the store immediately. They have absolutely piss poor customer service here. For context....I myself am a service advisor for a local BMW dealership. Customer service for me means communication. At any step in the process, if I expect my clients to spend money and also their time, it would behoove me to update them on any changes, delays, etc. The only call I ever received over a period of 17 days was to tell me what was wrong with the computer which makes sense because that's their opportunity to sell. They had to order parts which wouldn't arrive for 3-5 business days, understandable. However, after business day 7, we come across that word again...communication. A simple phone call to say, "Sir, the part arrival has been delayed etc." would have gone a long way, especially because I understand that they most likely have no control over that. I was left to wonder...were they playing my online game, were they going through all my questionable photos? Who knows! Finally I talked to my technician and he told me my computer would be done by Friday. Well you guessed it, Friday came and went with no call to say, "Sir we experienced a delay in the repair process." Maybe they needed an additional day to transfer my gold to their game account. Who knows! The last straw came when I called the next day and they tell me it will be ready today, "we're completing the repair as we speak." That was around 2 pm. So it's approaching 8:30 pm (they close at 9) and there's no call to say, "we're done", "we're not done", or "I still haven't finished stealing your game account." So I had to call them, and the first minute of the conversation does not include "your repairs are complete." I had to ask. Oh I forgot you have to upsell me on virus protection before you say I can pick it up. No need for anyone sitting behind a desk at corporate with no front line experience to respond to this or email me, etc. Take that time to set up customer service training for this location. read more

Females, if you plan to shop at Micro Center, bring a male with you. Any male will do, although you'll probably get further with someone who looks like he might be your husband. You will also want to allot about two hours for standing in multiple lines, being misinformed, having to stand in line all over again, and ultimately not getting any customer support until a male accompanies you. You'll be amazed how quickly your little problem is resolved once your husband intercedes. Save time! Have him speak for you from the start! Of course, once your husband is involved, the misogynistic staff will NEVER work with you again. You will not be able to pick up your own device -- with your name on it -- without your husband's authorization. You will not be able to get a refund to your own credit card without your husband's authorization -- even when it was your credit card that was charged in the first place. And you will not be served at the customer service desk without your husband present. (True story. Or maybe I should have my husband post this for it to be believable?) On the plus side, just the fact that your companion is male seems to be good enough for them. They won't check his ID (even though they'll want yours "for security reasons"), so just grab any male and have him speak for you. Such a time saver... and he gets bumped to the front of the line for his trouble! This review is in response to several horrible experiences at this store. I'm not sure whether it's my breasts or my vagina that intimidate them, but unless I bring someone with a penis to accompany me, I can't seem to get anything done at Micro Center. I've been a grownup too long to be treated like a little girl, and will never return to this sexist store. Unless you are prepared for similar treatment, I'd recommend you steer clear. P.S. Don't waste your time complaining to a manager or supervisor. I tried that, and couldn't seem to convey to either of them that this sort of gender discrimination is an actual problem. I came to here to pick up (2) 4gb = 8gb of ram for a 13 inch mac book pro and they were fully stocked with the memory I needed. They had plenty of inventory in stock even after me coming a few weeks after xmas. I was surprised to learn that they also carry other electronics such as video game consoles and accessories along with Televisions. I didn't get a chance to compare but I'm sure they couldn't be that more expensive than Best Buy. Overall the staff were very attentive and knowledgeable and I will definitely be back. Two experiences have finally steered me away from Microcenter. The first one was a problem with a disk drive. Due to a hardware problem in the computer, the partition table got wiped out. Data was still there but not accessible. I didn't have time to fool with it, so I took it in to see what they could do. The person took the drive to the back room and came out a few minutes later saying the drive was physically damaged and there was nothing that could be done - the data were irrevocably lost. Well, a couple of weeks later when I had some time, I fired up some Linux utilities, rebuilt the partition table and everything was fine again. So much for their "expert repairs". The second and final straw was their online ordering system. I wanted to pick up something first thing this morning so I tried to sign on late yesterday afternoon (Labor Day but before they closed) but it wouldn't take my password. I requested a new password be sent to my email, but that one would not work, either and the system locked me out (5 tries). I tried their online chat but was told that department was closed for the holiday and to try back this morning. So I tried their online chat again, only to find they couldn't help me, either. "For security reasons" they expect me to hold on an 800 number until they get around to answering. Sorry, but I have better thing to do. Thhis is right out of the 80's. Even my banks (between all of my accounts I deal with 4 different ones) don't require you to jump through hoops like this. So I told the person on the chat to just close my account and I would take my business elsewhere. She couldn't do that, either. My suggestion - go with a company that knows what they're doing. This place has everything you will ever need. I love the customer service. They always strive to make sure you have everything you need for your purchase. They look out for you! Much better customer service than any other electronics store I've ever been to. Best buy is plain crap. These guys KNOW what they're talking about. They take hiring their reps very seriously. It's not easy to get a job here. You have to pass very intense exams. They make sure their reps are knowledgeable. They are crazy busy on the weekends. I recommend coming on a weekday/weeknight. This one is specifically for the knowledge bar. This is where you would go to asked for fixes/repairs/questions about your device. The store itself is great, customers on the floor and check out were great too 5/5. Knowledge bar was ehh. September 3rd I went in for them to fix my back screen of my laptop because it cracked. This was a new laptop that I have purchased on my own, i spoke to a fair skinned man who wore glasses. I specifically told them NOT LCD SCREEN, I needed a BACK COVER. He puts in the description as LCD screen. He then told the tech guy in the back to come out to speak to me about what I clearly wanted. And we did. He ordered it. Two weeks has passed and it finally came in. Mind that I was calling every other day from September 3 until September 14th asking is my laptop BACK COVER shipped in yet they said it's on the way. Finally on September 17 it came in, I went into the store then asked the tech guy to show me the laptop part. Guess what they showed me..a LCD SCREEN! The tech guy then started to make excuses of how he ordered the wrong part (he realized he messed up)..I've called to make sure it's the part I asked for. At first when he showed me the screen he said he'll replace the screen and TRY to bend back the cover to push in the screen..like hell no. Anyways, he then proceeded to tell me that he will order the correct part...he said he remembered that I even needed a back cover. I waited another whole entire week but I didn't call this time. September 17th he said he will order it and I will get it by the end of the week. Now it's September 24th. I got the part I needed, but I wasn't for it for them to fix it at this point. Before I knew the part came in. He didn't notify me UNTIL I emailed him. Then 5 minutes later i got a phone call saying my part came in. I complained how I've waited wayyyy to long for a laptop part and how I've already made it 100% clear that I needed a back cover. Usually I would buy the parts myself and fix it but because this laptop was rare/popular the online stores didn't have it in stock. I'm not coming back for their services. It's not worth the wait and time wasted. In the end, I asked for the part only without using their repair services and went my way. read more

The store is well-stocked and employees are helpful. Unfortunately, there are a few drawbacks. I purchased some computers and the salesman suggested I buy two external backups. The selling point was that , with a special plan, I could exchange those backups within 2 years for the then-current model. The plan came with a fee that I paid. When I researched further, the plan was simply a replacement plan if the drives went bad. When I finally heard back from the salesman, he denied his pitch and attributed it to some sort of misunderstanding. That was not the case. On another trip, I picked up a wireless router, on sale. Little did I know that this was a router that came out 3 years ago, and the internet price was a little more than half of what I paid. I know I should have done my research before purchasing, but I placed too much trust in Microcenter. Finally, I am convinced that Microcenter deliberately understaffs its returns counter so that the wait is intolerable. read more

I LOVE this place! There isn't a better computer store in the area! PERIOD! Microcenter is cheap, they have almost everything, and its a 20 min drive from my home. I normally order my products online and pick them up in the store. Super convenient! I have also had pretty good customer service when I did need assistance. i took my laptop in for repairs and was told I would be charged $50 just to look at it and no one was available to even look at it for two weeks. I explained that the n key and the b key don't work, sometimes not at all and sometimes giving me multiple nnn. When I got it back the tech denied that there was a problem and encouaged me to pay for a warrantee. I did so and after two weeks was so frustrated with the continuing problem that I tried to bring it back and claim the warantee. I was told at the door that it would be at least three weeks before anyone would be available to look at it and that I would probably be charged another service fee. I was told this at the door by someone who was discouraging me from even entering the store. With so many people out of work you would think they would have better staffing. I think at this point this is equivalent to not honoring the warantee at all. I will NEVER SHOP THEM AGAIN. read more

If you are in a jam and you need local tech goods then go here. if annapolis/baltimore is your radius you are stuck between this place and compusa in DE for an actual tech store. over the years, I have spent thousands of dollars on various items at micro center from HDDs to security cameras to wires to case fans to PC TV tuners, etc. After my experience yesterday I vow to never buy from MicroCenter again. (I'm not swearing off the Newark, DE CompUSA yet - tax free). I spent $750 w/ tax on a 512GB SDD primarily because I was impatient and didn't just get the 650 one available on NewEgg. I drive back to annapolis to find the box contained an unwrapped 32GB SDD from another brand with the supposed brand sticker on it. I drive back to Rockville and have to make a scene with the manager to plead my case. He eventually exchanged for what I was supposed to have purchased to begin with. However, I wasted three hours of my work time (billable rate) and having to make a scene to get satisfaction. I understand stores are defrauded but I was speaking to the manager and all he had to do is look at the 15+ times I've purchased at Micro Center for the last 7+ years PLUS the fact I used my credit card to figure this scenario out (which happened eventually - almost an hour). NewEgg/TigerDirect/Amazon are consistently cheaper and shipping times are typically tolerable. obviously they have some internal theft issues. mom&pop, physical, retail locations need to maintain stellar customer service. when it comes to higher end computer parts the customer base is already primarily online as it is. Really? 4 stars for this place?? Are you all paid critics?! I went in there today to pick up a flip camera that I bought online as a Xmas gift for my brother. Online it showed me the color was gray and when I get in they give me a bright blue one. Total bait and switch. Said they had not been able to fix their website to show which one was availabe. BUT I said--"It showed grey and said you had 3 in inventory so I put in my pick up order". What kind of a JV operation is this when they are false advertising and blame it on "we haven't gotten around to fixing our website". When I told them I had driven in RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC for an hour from DC I was expecting the product with a specific color that I had seen on my computer screen. They said that they didn't know what was going on and that although their inventory said they had the gray in stock, the sales people said the gray flip cameras were gone. So--here I was dealing with their inventory MISmanagement. Out comes an unprofessional manager who proceeds to tell me she could give me a discount--which I didnt want bc I was there for a specific product and it's against store policy to ship the new one to me once they get it in stock to make up for their mistake. Oh ,and yes there was no way they could call another store to see if they had it in stock to ship to me. Aside from one of the customer service who was pretty nice everyone else seemed either clueless, like they didn't give a rat's a**, or that they knew this is something this place typically does. The final kicker was that the cashier gave me the receipt with a "code" for a survey. Of Course I was going to fill out this and give feedback. I get home that same night and it says my code "is already in use"...Hmmm--seems like some store employees knew what was coming. Perhaps lower scores?Has anyone else had this happen? In addition to the sort of stuff you'd find in a Best Buy -- minus CDs, DVDs and kitchen appliances -- this place has a very thorough assortment of computer components. Generally speaking you can walk into it and walk out with everything you would need to build a computer from scratch -- a low end one, a run of the mill one, a gaming powerhouse or a high end corporate server. When something breaks and you can't wait for Newegg or a similar retailer to ship it to you, Micro Center's your go-to. The greatest thing, and the worst thing, about Micro Center is their prices. By this I mean if you watch their sales you will come across some amazing deals -- better than any I've seen anywhere else, brick and mortar or online. I think they are probably selling some of their deals at a loss, or near to it, judging by the prices -- so if you are the sort to plan computer component purchases out, and you pay attention to their sales circulars, you can end up saving a lot of money. The reason I say it's also the worst thing is that generally speaking, everything that isn't on sale is usually a little inflated. If you go in and get one of their doorbuster sales -- say, a Core 2 i7 bundled with a motherboard -- and walk out with that and that alone, you're in great shape. But if you grab the RAM and drives and GPU and so on to do a full upgrade to your box at the same time, you will end up paying a little more overall than you ought to. The reason this is a big enough deal to knock off the fifth star: the thing that makes this store a great thing to have nearby is that sometimes you need a component and can't, or don't want to, wait a few days for it -- in that case you're either going to get lucky because they have a good item on sale, or you're going to pay a premium for it -- not extortionate, but you will definitely notice that it's more expensive. Their floor staff have little labels they want you to stick on an item if they helped you find it, I'm assuming because that is one of the ways they measure performance. Not a big fan of that sort of thing but it does mean that the floor staff will go out of their way to help you. read more

Overall my experience that day has completely turned me off of Micro Center and I never plan to return. I've written a letter to the corporate office as well as the store manager looking for an explanation to the behavior of the sales staff. The sales associate who I dealt with was overly pushy in selling the warranty and lacked any sense of professional tact. After insisting that I needed to buy the warranty, he proceeded to laugh and tell me that I'm the type who'll probably break it and be back in two weeks looking for a replacement. I told him I wasn't interested, and quite frankly in a hurry, and he continued with his stale sales pitch. The sad part was that it wasn't just him. There was another shopper who was accosted by a "sales" associate who berated him for wanting to buy a MacBook Pro for his niece. The associate said it would be in his best interest to buy an iPad. After the gentlemen insisted on buying the laptop, the associate scoffed and begrudgingly went to retrieve the computer. I've worked retail in the past so I understand the need to meet quotas, but being overly pushy towards your customers is the quickest way to lose a return customer and revenue. read more

The individuals who work at the customer service are some of the most apathetic people I have seen. I have worked in the service industry before as well and I understand if you are having a bad day, but a basic level of hospitality to customers is still necessary. I went in to do a keyboard repair. I dropped the computer off on July 3rd and someone was going to call me on July 4th, that's what my contract said. Online information was not updating or available either. I called today, July 11th. My repair order has not been processed because I didn't approve it. I wasn't even asked! My computer has just been sitting there for more than a week when I need it. I'm so frustrated because this is the first time I try somewhere other than the Apple store. The staff need to organize when repairs come in and have an agenda they follow to avoid these mistakes. I'm a full time college student & this backed up my week. Never again will I come. I went yesterday (12/03/13 to pick up a online order ( 40***43) I arrived to the store around 6pm, I did a line for 15 min to pick up the TV and they told me that i was not there (at the internet pick up kiosk) that they need time to find it, Note I received 2 emails letting me know that the order was ready for me, I made time, and come back an hour later, same thing, I was around the store making time, I request a manager, and I got one almost 3 hours later, the 18 minutes pick up it doesn't exist, neither the commitment to warranty and save the item, at my 3rd hour they said your tv is not here, so find another one for the price, it was a Toshiba TV and they try to give me a lower quality TV, After that, the manager, --witch was not very nice, a male without name tag, ( short, white male in his 50's) -- offered me a Sony tv, or $50 discount in any other one. When I got home, I realize that the Tv they sold me is a LDC and not a LED as the other one, I'm very disappointment with the service, the time spend, the quality of the item, everything, is been the worse shopping experience in my life, not mentioning that the last time I did have to make the line was more than 30 min wait!! fell free to call me and we can talk about it,I did called today but not one respond. read more
