Microcenter, we have a problem. Mid April, my PC dies. I go off to Microcenter, I buy a new one, a refurbished HP. I have some reservations about buying a refurbished machine, but my cohorts and the store assure me that it will be totally fine, and my roommate even bought her PC refurbished and it's been fine for several years. So I go ahead and buy it. I take it home, set it up. It won't update to Windows 8.1 and keeps crashing. And crashing. And then three weeks after I buy it... it completely stops booting up. We take the computer to the Microcenter Knowledge Bar. The technician can't get it to connect to a monitor, so he tells me he's going to have to check it in and it could be one to two days before they know anything. This is on a Tuesday night. On Wednesday afternoon, a tech calls me and tells me that unfortunately, there was a bad fuse in the machine. This is what caused the computer to not connect to the monitors. What it also did was destroy the hard drive that was in the computer when I bought it, as well as my backup with 12 years of data that we'd put into the computer. There goes my stuff. Microcenter says there's some super fancy service they can send my hard drive to, that maybe they can get the info off it, but it could cost anywhere between $700-$1400 dollars - more than I paid for the PC in the first place. What they do is offer me a new machine, a different version of the same machine that they sold me in the first place. We go to pick that up, and speak with a Sales Manager and a technician, one of whom seems to have absolutely no computer knowledge whatsoever, and the other of whom would do anything to make it seem like it was something else's fault, not the computer's, that my data was lost. ("You should have had a backup." "You destroyed my backup." "It was a power surge, or electrically charged dust, etc etc.") The Sales Manager, when giving me the new computer, tells me that it was just a freak thing, that their machines are good, and that this won't happen again. I take the new machine home, we set it up, and everything's fine. For less than 24 hours. Less than 24 hours later, the new computer isn't booting. What's going on here, Microcenter? Is this still my fault? Are you willing to admit, at this point, that you're selling me faulty machines? I snap a photo of the faulty boot up screen and send it to a computer technician friend and I sit on the couch for the rest of the night, because I'm too angry to make another trip back to Microcenter. This is Thursday. Friday night, we take the SECOND faulty machine to Microcenter. I don't even bother dealing with the sales rep in customer service. He cannot help me at this point. I need a manager. A manager comes out, looks at the machine, takes it to boot it up, says they'd need to check it in to fully diagnose the problem. No. This is not a game I am playing. I do not want another model of this same faulty machine. I do not want another machine that Microcenter has built. That's right - by this point I have learned that "refurbished" means that Microcenter has built these PCs. I want my money back. I look this manager in the eye and I ask him - what are you going to do to make this right? The answer? Nothing. They had ever-so-graciously given me a second PC to replace the nonworking one I had had less than three weeks, and somehow Microcenter feels this is adequate compensation for the utter hell I have gone through in the four days of trying to get a functioning computer, days in which a PC they sold me destroyed by backup drive. There was no attempt at trying to smooth over the manager who tried to simply write me off on the Wednesday before by just saying "well, this doesn't happen, it could have been anything, you can pay $700 to get your info back" - a man who clearly did not care one whit for anything I was saying, or that I had lost anything at all. I was told that I could get another PC. As though I would want another computer, another refurbished computer built by Microcenter, when I had already had two that had been non-functioning. I was told "Well, we'll be here when you want to buy a computer." We ended up buying parts and having a tech-savvy friend build me a PC. read more

I've been going to Micro Center for several years now. At first, had excellent service, but I find it's not as good as it used to be. I also find that if you need something small, like just a mouse, it's hard to get someone to help you. The guys at the technical counter are good, but have to realize that we are not all computer geeks, more patience, espec. with the elderly :). I still go to Micro Center for TV's, computers, etc. and would definitely recommend them. read more

I travel for work and need a functioning computer...the guy at MicroCenter won me over with their no fault coverage plan .. Repair or replace within 24 hours....sounds good....until the screen breaks .....well, it turns out the guy who sold me the coverage plan was lying ... they are under no obligation to do anything in and no longer works there...all of which leaves me with no laptop... FOR THREE WEEKS!!! Get this, the best the manager would do is suggest I buy another laptop and then return it.......Learn from my mistake! Stay away!! read more

My PC was diagnosed quickly, the repair was trivial and I was not charged for it. The techs are not only professional but ethical as well, and it seems that exceeding customer expectations is the norm in this store. Thank you, Jimson! A great looking store full of gadgets, electronics, hardware, and nic-nacs. The chairs are comfortable. The shelves are stuffed. The staff is knowledgeable, willing to research and talk specs. And, the chances are pretty good they will have the wire you need to get that thing you built working. Beware of calling. Their phone prompts for mailboxes that are always full or gives extensions that aren't connected - so you're instantly disconnected. But if you sign-up for their email alerts or to get their flyers in the mail (nostalgia that's really good!) then you're kept in the loop. Do some online research. Get outta the chair. Go to the store. Don't be afraid to ask. If you drool over tech, love to browse Apple and Sony stores, dabble in HDTV, home theatre, satellite-NET, WiFi hookups (gearheads - not just for geeks) this store is "physical RSS tech" that's worth the drive to Rockville. While you're at it - checkout the new stores and eateries near the town center. read more

BEWARE RESTOCKING FEES! Although the prices are generally higher than ordering through the internet, I've been using this place for several years, because I often like to see/feel what I'm buying and it's always been fairly easy to return things, or at least that was my perception of its reputation. Apparently, that has changed. They now have a 10% to 15% restocking fee. And you don't know what they apply that to, before your purchase. And they seem to enjoy arguing with customers. I generally avoid shopping at stores that use restocking scams, and I always ask or glace at the returns policy anytime I buy anything over $100, just out of an abundance of paranoia. Since the large sign when I checked out said nothing about monitors, I assumed I was safe purchasing a low-end Samsung LED monitor that was on sale, especially since I have returned items in the past without any problems. But when I started opening the monitor box and putting it together, it quickly became apparent that it was a little too low-end for my taste. The unit struck me as a way too flimsy, and the stand, especially, seemed like it was an accident waiting to happen. I figure, no problem, I'll just return it and look at other options. So I very carefully put everything back the way it was, and took it back to Micro Center. However, I failed to notice the small print on the receipt that indicated monitors were subject to a restocking fee, despite it saying nothing about that anywhere in the store. My bad, perhaps, but I was still surprised. Restocking fees are generally targeted at temporary use items, to discourage people from using the store as a rental center. I'm not sure when it expanded, but if a store is looking for ways to alienate long-time customers, screwing them on returns is certainly the way to do it. For what it's worth, I also heard people being denied returns for faulty motherboards and CPUs. And I also learned that being honest is not advisable, at Micro Center. I was told that I could not get out of the restocking fee, unless something were wrong with the monitor. As the customer behind me said, as I was leaving, I should have just said that something was wrong with it, or I should have arranged for something to be wrong with it. Whole experience has left an incredibly bad taste in my mouth. After having spent upwards of four grand at that store over the last year, they have lost a customer over a lousy $18 charge. Always consider the return policy before making any purchase. If they try to sneak something onto the fine print of the receipt, return it immediately, before opening the box! read more

Terrible customer service. Today, I was leaving the store when the "security" staff stopped me to check my plastic bag which was from another store. This uncalled and rude event may me wondered on Microcenter policy toward their customers: are we all potential thieves? Do they check all the womens purses? Today I felt unwelcome. The good news is that I can always count on Amazon.com, so today they lost a customer. My advice, as soon as you enter the store you are a potential thief, so don't be surprise if you need to open your bags/purse in front of everyone to prove your innocence. I sent a complain to the store, but I have no hope and no desire to come back. For some people this may be a small issue but I just wanted to share this with other people, perhaps, I am not the only one with this complain. read more

SERVICE & REPAIR ONLY: Dropped ASUS TF201 tablet; broke glass - looked online - MicroCenter (where I actually purchased it) fixes broken screens. Hmm - looked for phone number to validate - none to be found - so, chatted with PaulA. PaulA assured me they fixed tablet screens in store, confirmed they did if for ASUS products, says while you wait and so, on my one day off, went to the store. Patiently waited 45 minutes to be told by some uninterested kid they don't repair them. I pushed -- he checked, they do - but, not for the $119 on the web site, for $225. Asked to talk to manager, did, was told that not only is it really 225, but, they actually send it out to someone else and don't do it in store. Wasted almost 2 hours of a great day. What a waste - LiveChat lied, Kids working there and no one accountable for bad information. Skip microcenter repair...although, the sales group and products are still one of my favorite. read more

Stay away from here for support!!! I dropped off a two-year old Windows 7 PC at this Rockville location for a check to see if there were problems. They called and said the hard drive had to be reformatted and Windows re-installed (which were two separate charges totalling $170). When I picked up the PC, I had no data, no applications...the PC was unusable but, yes, Windows 7 was on it. There were some folders on the desktop which I presume had data in them, but how am I to know where the data files go? And where are the actual applications like Quicken...I am now dead in the water for my finances. There are long times on hold waiting when I call, and I get what sound like teenagers asking me technical questions. I am a 75 yr old grandmother and I'm calling them for the technical help!! I am so sorry I ever thought of using their tech support. They may be the best stocked place for selling parts, but the service is abysmal!!! read more

Huge store with tons of cool things to explore! Find something completely random and want to know about it? The staff at Micro Center are more than happy to tell you about it or find one of their specialists to tell you all about it! The store also has a repair station which I have used to fix my laptop! Very easy to use and it took about a month to get my laptop back. There are always good deals at the store and there are a lot of things that have mail in rebate! They also have a PC building station that has expert PC users to help you pick out your parts and help you construct your very own computer! Overall, this Micro Center is well kept and maintained and offers all kinds of products for there customers making each trip an adventure. read more

Sunday afternoon 7/8/2012, walked up into this joint. Geek heaven this is called? Geek hell is what it is. Waited 25 minutes for the honor of purchasing a freaking SSD drive. I was first in line back there! No one there! Why is it the one freaking thing that I can't pick up and take to the register, like a normal boy? When one of them came by, they told me to wait. When I pointed to what I wanted, it took them 10 minutes to decide they don't have it and to decide to get out the display unit. I don't exaggerate, It took two of them 10 minutes to complete this basic maneuver. In the meantime, I asked a couple of questions about competing products, you know, is this one better, how about I just buy that one if it's such a problem, stuff like that. Not because I'm an ubergeek and wanted to show off a bit of superiority, I just don't know much about that line of hardware. Straight up asked that freak this kinda stuff and was completely ignored. And I had my attitude in check the whole time, all sweet and nice, not nerdy, haughty, overbearing or hipsterish. Don't know why I was treated like that. At least they have the damn drives but don't tell that to the guy who works in that area, he didn't have a clue what they are. Micro Center is everything a computer store shouldn't be. Rugrats all over. I tripped over a freaking scooter somewhere. Why should DC suffer with stores like this? What do people do for computer parts in a pinch? Yes I shop at NewEgg or Amazon usually. That's not the point. There's a reason physical stores exist. Oh, and there is no hope for improvement here. The email survey they immediately spammed me to my phone requested nothing that is important to my continued patronage, it was only about the cashier - was the cashier nice, did he give you a freaking store flyer, in your hand or in the bag or in your mouth, did he smile, did he check out your stuff. Just weird, they're looking for any reason to scapegoat someone and continue to pay someone a low rate of pay I guess, because of severe design problems with their store and customer outreach. Not much of a way to express to them that it took an hour to buy a simple part, and that everyone there besides the cashier basically treated me like crap or some kind of ghost, like I'm trying to buy shoes at Macy's or something. Bottom line, I was excited to finally visit this store because of their selection of stuff I buy all the time, like motherboards and other computer parts, I'd buy that stuff all day long, but 95% of the stuff was ghetto brands, the service was horrible, and I won't go back. read more

They are courteous, but expensive. Return policies could be better. I am not happy that I had to leave my laptop with them for at least 2-3 weeks so they could send it to who knows where. They just repaired it less than 3 months ago! At almost $190 a pop (while under extended warranty), this is expensive and a real budget buster! I doubt that I will ever buy another computer from them. And there is no store closer than Rockville, Maryland. Trying to get a human on the phone is almost impossible! read more

The sales associates at laptop department was good, the selection is good. The store is crammed full of stuff which is kind of cool, but makes things a little difficult to find. But only one Cashier? I went to this store to buy a Charger for my friend's iPhone. I kept trying to ask one of the associates where to locate them in their store... but ... none of the associates on the floor were friendly. Trying to get them to acknowledge me was very frustrating. The first associate says he doesn't know and tells me to ask someone else.... Fine... I walk the entire store and finally noticed the apple product section but I didn't see what I needed. There were two employees in the same section chatting it up... I walked up to them and waited patiently standing right in front of them, without interrupting them so they can finish their conversation... But both never acknowledged me or even bothered asking why I was standing there staring at them. After standing there like an idiot for which seemed like 10 to 15 minutes I couldn't take it anymore and just blurted out "where are your iPhone accessories?" What pissed me off was they completely ignore me and continue their conversation! Thinking maybe they didn't hear me I repeated my question a little bit louder so they can hear me. They finally make eye contact with me and one associate rolled their eyes and the other one points to a general area... I thanked them and went in search of what I needed. Of course I don't find what I'm looking for in the area where the associate pointed to... Obviously at this point I realize I'm not going to be helped I walk the entire left side of the store again and finally locate what I was looking for and headed for the checkout line. The checkout line took FOREVER because they had one cashier and the customer in the front of the line was having issues of some sort... The ONLY reason why I'm giving this place 2stars instead of just 1 is because of the cashier. Out of everyone in that store this one employee was the only associate with customer service etiquette and was very friendly. This place need to fire everyone except for him and make him a manager. Obviously he's the only one in there who know how to respect customers. I hope that cashier finds himself at a better job. I will never return to this store unless I'm in the mood to go on a scavenger hunt. Poor customer service and useless rude employees. read more

I believe this Micro Center is under new management now. And what great management it is. When I say that the customer service has had a complete refurbished, regenerated, undoubtedly complete turn around, I AM NOT LYING! When I walk in the store nowadays days I can't help but to get the best customer service ever. These guys (the sales reps) are not only polite, but they are actually knowledgeable and have no problem exercising that knowledge by divulging the intricate information on the products and the necessities of them. I swear this is a different place and I really love my last few experiences. I couldn't help but to spend big money in this place with no buyer's remorse included. Whatever y'all did, thumbs up! Bought a fancy huge monitor from them, for $1,100. After 3 weeks a line of dead pixels appeared (obviously not their fault) -- took the monitor back to MicroCenter, with no box just the power cable -- they processed the replacement immediately, didn't even test the bad monitor, I walked out with a new monitor 20 minutes later. BEWARE OF HOW YOU DRESS WHEN YOU COME HERE. For some strange reason I felt like they profiled me based on how I dressed. Several reps walked passed me without acknowledging that I was waiting to purchase a laptop among other items. Finally a very professional rep named Don (I think) addressed me. His manager seemed uninterested when Don told him I was purchasing a laptop. I had on jeans and a hoodie as it was snowing outside. Very strange experience and even felt borderline uncomfortable with the lack of assistance. read more

Had an equally bad experience several months ago. Sales help is hard to obtain and seem more worried about moving on to the next customer so they can apply their sticker to ensure their commission. as far as electronic stores go that are not online, in the dc area, the micro centers are probably the best. (in my humble opinion) first of all, they sell relevant electronics at great prices second, the people there actually know what they are talking about the other day i went to best buy to buy a fire wire cable. a guy walked up to me right away, kindly greeted me, and asked me if i needed help finding anything. i asked him where the firewire cables were. then he walked around for a bit (me following) and I was finally led to a counter where he asked another guy ("the pro") where the fire wire cables were. so "the pro" took me over to where the USB cables were and he looked them over for a little bit and then told me that they didn't sell fire wire cables and apologized and walked away. my little brother who was with me leaned forward and picked up a fire wire cable, just in the same spot where the guy was looking. these guys are stupid or something. anyways, i have never had a problem at the micro center where the employees can't even find their own product! read more

The store seems to have decent pricing however the service center folks don't seem to know what they are doing. I dropped off my laptop since it wasn't booting in Safe Mode and told them that they could restore it to factory settings as I had backed up the data. After a week they said that the motherboard was not working and that this laptop could not be repaired. I was a bit surprised since the machine was booting up with options to reset. Still, I believed them and brought the laptop home and was able to reinstall Windows by myself. However, they have done something inside the laptop and the battery does not charge, this problem did not exist before. I believe some inexperienced technician messed up the insides of this machine and conveniently blamed the motherboard for this. It seems to me that even though they charged me for repairing, no attempt was really made to do so. Additionally, they have messed up the battery charging inside the laptop. I would advise not to use the service center here and instead find better technicians for repairs. read more

The phone system in place when you call their main number has to be the most irritating phone system I have ever encountered. The woman's voice is highly irritating. You cannot press 0 or * to get a person. Every option you choose just ends up with the irritating lady-voice telling me I can find that information at their website. I just wanted to call to see if my computer was ready at the store! After 3 tries, I finally got a person - WHO WAS NOT IN THE STORE, and could not tell me. I clicked yes to complete a brief survey of customer service after my call so I waited after the guy hung up and then the survey didn't even click on. Seriously the worst. They took my laptop to do "diagnostics" SIX days ago and can't give me an update when I call. They said they would call me in one day when i left it with them. Good stock. Informed staff BUT the checkout line moved at the speed of tectonic plate shift. Several species evolved and became extinct while I was in line with 40-50 people. The line was full of humor but what sort of business model makes it hard to close a purchase? This place is brilliant! It's located where the old CompUSA used to be, but it is far superior! It has a broader selection of stocked items than most other local stores, and it is set up much more like comparable stores in high tech California. I confess that sometimes the prices are not as competitive as other online shopping sources, but then, this store also has lesser brand items that work just as well but can cost much less. Sometimes the price may be a bit more, but I can get it immediately rather than wait for online stores to ship...so sometimes it's worth the extra cost. Yes, one of my "go to" places for computer and related electronic gadgetry. I also really like their online ordering for in-store items features withihn "18 minutes" - the 18 minutes thing is not always dependable, but it can usually save time from going to the store to look for it yourself. Their online shopping stock supplements their in-store stock very well for some rarer items. read more

My first impression of this place was not good, but they sort of fixed it. I do not find this a pleasant place to shop because it is so hectec. I know they are not to blame, but parking there is horrible. However, they have everything computer you could want. I had them build a computer for me and the tech made some very helpful suggestions. But, It was not an easy process. I became a very frustrated customer losing patience. Every employee that I encountered was knowledgable and if you could catch them, very helpful. I spent a lot of money there and I hoped for perfection. To their credit, they stuck with me and always treated me as if the customer is right, and they solved all of my issues. If I had encountered the same problems via purchasing through the mail, this was the correct way to go and easier to solve problems. But, I can see why PC sells are falling, it is stressful to buy such complex machinary. I think that I have ended up with an excellent computer and I would go back to Microcenter read more

Pretty par for the course for computer supply stores. Great selection, average service. I really wish Micro Center would stop trying to use cables as a profit item, when instead it should be a reason to get someone in the door. I can buy for $1 online what you're charging $12.99 for in the store. Instead, give it to me for $2 to let me get it "same day" instead of waiting for online shipping, and I'll probably spend $100 on other stuff while I'm in electronics heaven. At least they're better than $24.99 for the same cable at less specialized retail stores. read more

Absolutely terrible location. I go in to get my laptop fixed since I have the Replacement protection plan. When I hand it I go through all the steps and the guy says he will call in a 2 days or so and give me and update. I wait two entire weeks and still no call, so now I go online and talk to someone online on chat. I talk to this person and he says that it still hasn't been repaired yet. It should not take 2 weeks to fix a broken screen. After the sales associate really encouraged me to spend an extra $100 for the protection plan and I can't get my laptop fixed in a timely manner or even be respected to communicate what the holdup is, I just feel robbed. He emails the location and tells them to call me and that I will receive a call in a day or two. I wait two days and still no reply. Save yourself a headache and dont support an establishment that doesn't care about their customers in the slightest. read more

There is no way to contact the store directly. Every phone number goes to the same recording which, no matter which button you choose, refers to you their website. I wanted to speak to someone in the repair department and was unable because Customer Service is closed on Sundays and all buttons bring you there. My laptop has been in their repair shop for over 2 weeks for replacement of hard drive under warranty. I was told a few days ago (when I went to the store) that it was being delivered. I still have not heard ONE WORD from anybody regarding the status. read more

In late December 2012 I purchase a wireless keyboard from the MicroCenter Rockville, MD store. I didn't work. I returned it today and bought another model. When I got it home I discovered that it was a returned item and was missing the batteries and the wireless transponder. I called the store and spoke to the manager and he said there was nothing they could do and that I would have to make a third trip (some considerable distance) and return it. My suggestion that perhaps they could ship me one from the catalog along with a return shipping label didn't fly. read more

I went to the store a few months when they first started the wireless program. There was two employees who helped me extremely well Boris Vargas and Simon Ellison. These two very knowledgeable about the wireless service. It's such a shame that microcenter decided to change the wireless team with there own employees now who don't know anything about wireless. read more

This is my new electronics store now that Radio Shack is gone. To be honest, they don't even compare - Micro Center is massive, they have a great inventory, just about anything you could possibly need electronics-wise, and their prices are surprisingly good. I needed clear CD gem cases - they had them (.29 cents). I needed a soldering kit - they had it. I needed an oddly shaped screwdriver - they had it. Go and just browse, you'll think of something to build from just looking at all the cool electronics gear. read more
