Went to MicroCenter about a month back, and was very happy with my visit. I waited to write my review just in case I had problems with my purchase (I think warranty/return service is a big factor when tested!) but haven't had any problems yet! I'm going to go ahead and say that MicroCenter is the only place in the Twin Cities which is focused on actively engaging the specifically tech-inclined crowd. I'll address MicroCenter's Customer Service, Selection, and Product respectively. Customer Service: The staff was very helpful. I've been needing to upgrade my laptop to a SSD for a while now, and as soon as I walked in somebody directed me to the right area of the store. They keep their SSDs under lock and key (I understand the necessity) but that gave me a good opportunity to talk about my purchase before going to the register. Staff made a recommendation on a specific drive and broke down the pros and cons for me - very knowledgeable about it and seemed enthusiastic. Selection: Everything under the sun. Walked around the store for a bit just to soak it all in. Sure, you can find everything online, but if you're looking to get a computer project started right away, this place probably has everything you need. Product: I've only made a couple of purchases so far, but I haven't had any problems. They seemed pretty straightforward about their warranty policies, which is helpful since you don't need to chase around answers. The Bad? The only annoying thing was that, upon picking out my SSD, I had to be escorted up to the counter with it. I get where they're coming from, but it still seems like there should be some way around that. Maybe stick the display near the registers? Overall, great experience. It's been about 10 years since I had shopped for a computer. Several of my friends had recommended MicroCenter. Although I didn't find the sales team particularly engaging (stood around for a little while before anyone was available), they certainly know their stuff. I got a great deal. I love my computer. I like the anti-virus software they recommended. They educated me very well on the various levels of computers available and what would probably best fit my needs. I highly recommend them. I don't think there is a single place in town that can beat their prices. They have a great selection on everything and really nice staff. read more

If you get the right sales associate you can get a lot of useful information on almost anything you want to know about techie stuff. This place is great if you are looking for something specific. Be sure to sign up for their ads and check the website. I have found a number of GREAT deals over the years. They will often carry products that are in limited supply and sometimes even refurbs. I once got an external HD for half of the price it was listed at bestbuy and have never had a problem with it. They have a decent Apple department too. read more

I love and hate it here. Tech is my life and as such microcenter is my nerd-out place in MN. This place has the best prices for CPU / motherboards (not even amazon or newegg can compete). They hook you into that and hope you'll buy everything else for a system build from them too. The phone is non-existant so do not try calling this place as you will end up tearing your hair out. It's easier just to stop in. Some of the guys are very helpful, some just kind of take up space but the same could be said about any other retail store. I get what I need and get out. They change their store layout pretty often which I can respect to see what formats work better. Their managers are all pretty cool and reasonable in what they decide if you run into problems. Their extended warranty programs are pretty great if you upgrade often. Anything goes wrong on your components (short of you purposely bulldozing the parts with your bobcat) gets you a shiny new gift card for replacement stuff. Ive been shopping here since forever. Its no red-carpet experience. It really does what they advertise they do. For people that expect 5 star service and attention from this place... well... be realistic, the cost has to come from somewhere. Also... DO NOT cross "stickers" with folks. The majority of the guys are paid on commission so if one dude helps you (they will probably put a sticker on what you buy) do not go and buy it from another dude, because that will indeed cause behind the scene glaring. Other than that like I said... great deals when the stuff works. Now that General Nano is gone, there isnt much competition for these guys in their field. My gamer-computer musician husband always insists we stop by Micro-center if we're near Saint Louis Park and I always bend because well - I love to gawk at camera equipment I cannot afford, fun computer gadgets I don't need and they have Astronaut Ice Cream at the check out (nearly an impossible item to find these days!) The carts don't fit down the isles, the staff are strange teens that always seem to find a way to either avoid you like the plague or haunt you like a parasite and the prices are always .... low! We always find the best deals here though stock is not always ideal and often times we come to the store and the item we seek is sold out - due to low prices. The shelves are high, cluttered and items can be hard to find but if you're willing to dig, the chances are you'll leave with a handful of good deals. The staff are knowledgeable and the parking lot is huge. The only real downfall to this store is I have literally waited 40 minutes in a check out line and some days it feels like Black Friday when really it is just a normal Wednesday afternoon. Not sure how the lines are always so long but the prices make up for it. read more

First off, I was floored by how low most of the prices were for parts - I have been a lifelong customer of (R.I.P) General Nanosystems and Newegg, and even the prices from PCpartpicker weren't as good as half of what I needed for my new system. When I arrived, a guy named Nicholas asked if I needed help finding anything - "Everything actually, since I'm building a whole new rig" - and he grinned ear to ear and walked me through every last component. He pointed out a few hardware incompatibilities in my picks, recommended incremental upgrades where needed, and made sure I would be all set. My final total was enormous, but not anywhere near as much damage as if I had ordered and shipped it all online - and on top of that, I got filled in on the past five years of hardware advances that I'd missed out on. It used to be that this was my last resort for components, but it very quickly became my first pick! Also, my saint of a girlfriend was with me throughout all the techno-babble in their Mac department, where she got filled in on a bunch of "maccy things" to upgrade her old macbook pro. It's not easy to be an Apple user surrounded by PC builders, but not once did anyone stoop to the usual jokes and belittling that tends to come up. read more

Under normal circumstances, I would have given Micro Center a 4 or 5 star rating, however, my most recent experience with them has been poor. As another recent commenter has mentioned, Micro Center recently experienced a problem with their POS systems. When you went in for a return or a price adjustment, the system mistakenly processed your refund as a charge. In my case, I was supposed to get an $85.82 refund. Instead, I was charged an additional $85.82. This means that Micro Center owes me $171.64... not as bad as the $522 that the previous commenter is owed but still not a small amount of money. The error was made on Monday, August 26th. I discovered it when I checked my account on Tuesday and, after calling my bank to confirm that it was Micro Center's error, I went directly to the store to talk to them about it. The staff at Micro Center were very pleasant and helpful as always. I was told that this had happened to one or two other customers that day. The Operations Manager took my information and went back to call the home office. A few minutes later he came out and told me that their IT staff had confirmed that it was, in fact, a problem in their POS system. He was very apologetic and assured me that they were working on it and would get it resolved as quickly as possible. On Thursday, it still wasn't resolved so I went back to the store again. The manager said that the IT department had discovered the error and had fixed it and that I should expect my refund by Friday or Monday at the latest. He did give me a Micro Center gift card as an apology for the continued inconvenience, though. That brings us to today. As of this afternoon, I still hadn't received my refund so I went back to the store. The manager I had been working with wasn't in today so I talked to another manager. She took my information again and went back to call the home office. When she returned a few minutes later she apologized (again) and said that refunds were being processed today and that I should see it by 5:30 today. Well, that deadline has passed and I'm still out $171.64. Their website doesn't seem to have any contact information for the corporate offices so I guess I'll be heading back to the store again tomorrow to ask how to get in contact with them. I don't blame the store employees; as I said, they have been helpful and friendly all along. I blame their incompetent IT department who, after more than a week, still can't fix a very serious problem in their POS system. I would still recommend Micro Center to anyone shopping for computer hardware... I would suggest that you consider using cash for your transactions whenever possible, though. read more

Manager Tim, Mr. Griffith in TV's, Justin in TV's were spot on. I researched for weeks on a new setup for TV system. The 1 I bought was faulty and broke 1 of my parts. They took the TV back, I bought a different brand. They replaced the part the 1st tv broke at no cost. It was a lot of trips but the technical knowledge was invaluable and the system works amazing. Mr. Griffith knew I had a lot of beginning questions (2 hours off and on as I am an informed consumer) and was fully patient as I explained I had all day so he can help other customers in between questions to keep the flow of business going and he did. It took close to a year to get off the email and postal mailings. Told em never to contact me. I hate wasting paper on mailings only slightly more than junk email. Returned a product yesterday and by the time I got home I had a "survey" waiting in my inbox. Most responsible email has a unsubscribe link. Apparent they can't figure out how to do that. What is not to like about the absolute best tech store in the Twin Cities? Micro Center has some of the lowest prices around on techie things...and you don't have to sacrifice variety for price either...this place is a geek mecca. While not the most aesthetically pleasing store in the Metro, all sections of the store are well marked, and usually well-stocked and orderly. I love this store simply because I feel they have plenty of options for computer hardware, both name-brand and generic, all at reasonable prices. Why buy Linksys, when Micro Center sells a similar network switch for 10 to 20 dollars less that works just as well? You will also find a section for HD TV sets, a well-rounded Apple section, a digital camera area that carries a wide range of items and accessories. On the other side of the store you will find a gaming section for all of the most current consoles, and a do-it-yourself section for building a computer. Checking out used to be a pain in the butt at this store, but like most customer-service minded businesses...they adopted the single queue method to the registers...and you can shop for geek kitsch while you wait...t-shirts, cheap tool kits, cables, USB drives, energy drinks...everything a geek would want. Fantastic PR. I recently bought a motherboard and cpu bundle from Microcenter and I'm from Iowa. I didn't have my computer up here to replace the motherboard and cpu until I got home. Got home, installed the motherboard only to find out it was a dead board :( Called microcenter to find out how much time I have left to return the board so I can plan on driving back up, and I believe that the associate relayed the message to someone higher up. A higher up contacted me and is mailing me a new board with a return shipping label for my dead board. Saved me money and 7 hours of driving. Thank you! read more

This is the first time we have ever asked for a price match. They kept changing the reason they could not price match. Additionally, I sat on hold for over an hour. I wanted to give a huge shout out to Christine (I hope I spelled your name correctly) at Microcenter in St Louis Park. I went in to the help center seeking help with my laptop which apparently had been drastically infected. Christine showed me step by step, after having found the problem(s), how to go through and eliminate everything that had been inadvertently downloaded onto my computer thus ridding my laptop of the virus software and fixing the issues I was having completely. I felt my needs were addressed immediately, with care and respect and she took the time to make certain I understand what was happening and how to fix it going forward. I had almost gone to another resource, and would have spent a lot of money just to diagnose the issues, but then I thought of the folks at Microcenter whom always seem to have the actual practiced knowledge pertaining to anything I come up with when I am there. Been there before, and the service / products were okay. This time when I went in, everything was a horrible experience. The sales staff were pushy and backstabbing each other to get to me to make that sale. I had a cart with over 5K worth of merchandise, and it was disgusting to listen to these (I am sure underpaid) sales people complain about customers when they think we are not listening, and arguing who gets to help me with my sale. I was completely turned off and just kept my list and went to Best Buy instead. read more

I got home and tried what he suggested and it worked in my new computer build perfectly. I've been using the SLP store in MN for over 10 years for both commercial and personal purchases. As a general rule they have everything and the price point is always less than big box stores. If you're OK with factory refurbished and understand that about 1 out of 10 is going to be a POS and you just need to throw it away and get a new one, this is the place for you. If you know what you're looking for and you can order online and use their instant pick-up, instead of having to deal with the people on the floor, you'll be much happier. They used to have a really good, knowledgeable, courteous staff. Now, they are primarily staffed by arrogant millennials that are most concerned with making sure that you understand that they are smarter than you. If you do find a particular person on the floor that is not that way, get their name and call ahead to find out when they work so that you can coordinate your visit with them being there. Keep in mind though, you're looking for a unicorn, given their current staff. Good Luck. read more

In the time it takes to put your name on the wait list you could practically have your items delivered to your front door by Amazon. They will tell you they are the cheapest and fastest to do your computer repair, that's a flat out lie. They told me it would be 5-7 days to replace the hard drive in my iMac and little over $300. I found a place that did it for $70 while I stood there and watched, it's a 10-15 job. This place clearly takes at vantage of people who they think doesn't know any better. UPDATE: To say they finally did give me the price match... which they can do over the phone I guess!? What finally got their attention was sending a Facebook message to the store page and letting them know I was planning to post about my experience online... so apparently the social media department has more pull than the call center! Anyways I'm leaving the review at two stars, cause I shouldn't have had to go through all that extra work and they did not make any extra effort to make amends. The product I bought went on sale a week later. I was ready to go into the store to return and get new price but thought I'd call and see if I could do it over the phone. The person in the call center said I could and took my info for a manager to call back. A week goes by with no call back so I call again. And a third and fourth times. Finally on the fifth try the call center gave me the trick to actually reach someone in the store (press option 3 and wait through options for phone to ring). Person who answered was extremely rude and says I cannot get the refund for the new price over the phone, it has to be in person. Was basically yelling at me about it. Also tells me once the sale is over I can no longer get the matched price even though I've been calling about this for weeks. Was about to send my friend to buy a 2K laptop at Micro Center because the prices are decent, return policy nice, and they have a good selection, but not anymore. So done with this place. I'll stick to ordering online. I've actually had great customer service experiences with other massive online vendors but this was such a colossal waste of my time and no one was helpful, they all had excuses. Maybe go if you need an in person place to check something out before you buy but careful customer service in the store can be pretty bad too... I found every time I went in, once sales rep realized I knew something about computers they'd leave me or rush me through and search for some person they could pressure to buy more. I went here to purchase a new laptop with some power. While my friend and I were searching we were approached by a lot of friendly employees who seemed eager to help. I ended up buying my 2nd choice after my 1st choice was out of stock (bummer). Long story short my I should've waited until my 1st choice was back in stock, I was not satisfied with how my 2nd choice was acting straight out of the box. Trackpad stopped working completely after a day. Took it back and didn't even have to fight to be able to exchange it, customer service was super helpful and empathetic. I got the laptop exchanged for the same model, thinking it was just a fluke. Unfortunately the new laptop wasn't acting right either, sound was terribly distorted even after a driver update and reinstall. Decided that was it, just going to return in and either get my money back or a gift card or something and just turn around and wait for my first choice. Once again I expected some hesitation to me returning yet another laptop but they proved me wrong. They were super friendly, super helpful. No hesitation at all on their end. That's what is going to keep me coming back to Micro Center, I've been there 3 times in 3 days now and not once did I feel like they weren't willing to help. I didn't even need to explain why I wanted to return it vs have the tech bar look at it. Since it was within 15 days they just let me return it. This is my favorite geeky of all geeky electronic stores. Tons of guys in blue shirts ready to help, all you have to do is ask! The guy I asked helped my son, age 10, gamer with the perfect mouse for his $20 budget, because our most didn't click fast enough. He said he never heard of that before, but he was very respect full about it. He took his time with us, opened boxes for us we look through clearance together, we talked strategy, he even made sure the mouse had no blue lights on it by plugging it in and checking since my son only wanted red. Wow! I also was looking for a laptop so we needed a person and white shirt this time I explained my needs and he gave me two options totally in my budget. I also got my printer ink that had actually come in for. Micro Center my son said he was shaking he was so happy with his mouse, it could really fast and other things were great about it that I don't really understand!
