We are fortunate to not only have one Micro Center, but two nearby. Micro Center has some of the best prices for computer parts out there, especially cpu chips. It's rare you can find a better deal on a Sandy Bridge or AMD bundle. Rare. Plus, they also price match with online competitors. And the 18 minute pickup is awesome. I haven't actually timed it to confirm, but it's definitely quick. But I suppose these are all just general comments about all Micro Center stores. So I will go into more detail about this one in general. Overall, I've found the workers to be friendly and fairly knowledgeable. Once in a while you need to put them in their place when they say something that doesn't make sense. But overall it's pretty good. I believe they do work on commission so usually they are pretty good about helping you. Maybe not commission, but they attach these stickers with their names on them so they must get some credit for sales. But at the same time, I don't find them to be overly pushy (not like Circuit City, damn did I just date myself?). Anyway, like most people, I usually just go to window browse and manhandle some of the things and then end up buying online for many items. But sometimes I just want it now! read more

If you are looking for computers and electronics, this is a pretty good place to go to. It's much better than Best Buy as Micro Center prices are much lower plus has a greater selection of computer products. They always seem to have a weekly special on at least one CPU processor. Those special btw are a lot cheaper than all of their competitors, even the internet retailers. Their overall selections are decent but they do carry a lot of generic brands hence one of the many reason for their low prices. They do have a nice video game department although the game selection is nowhere near GameStop. The service is pretty good and most of the staff are pretty knowledgeable. Even though many of the staff are on commission, I have never felt like I was pressured. One of the few gripes I have are the store presentation and it's website. The store presentation is terrible. In fact, for the many years I've been there, it's always seem to be disorganized. It sometimes hard to find certain items and many items seemed to be tossed around random location. The product placement is not very logical. It also annoys me that products are not faced which makes it very disorganized. Come on guys, how can you fail Retail 101? Make your commission sales force at least take pride of the store as I'm sure their is a lot of downtime for them. As far as the website, it looks like it was made from the 90's. The categories are not laid out very well and not user friendly... It's not their fault but I get annoyed because I sometimes use their in-store pickup option for my convenience but sometimes it's just easier to go the store. In the end, I would say that MicroCenter is a good place to go for your electronic needs but has some things it needs to work on. read more

I've been shopping at this location for a very long time (over ten years), and I've generally been pleased with their prices and selection. They also have very friendly staff, for the most part, with a few exceptions. The level of product knowledge could be greatly improved, and the staff should be trained to say "I don't know, let me check" when they really are unsure of an answer. Shop here if you know EXACTLY what you are looking for, and do not rely upon the staff to answer your questions accurately. Again, they are very friendly, and try to be helpful, but they don't always know what they're talking about. Also, should you ever need to do an exchange or return, they are not nearly as friendly and helpful as they were when they were selling you something. After over ten years of shopping there I finally had to exchange something. The process was difficult, and the general manager, who handled the exchange, was rude, dismissive, and she made me feel as if it was a bother to exchange one item for another (which I actually paid MORE for than the item I was returning!). read more

I placed an order for in store pick up and received an email the same day stating that the item is ready. When I went into the store, the employee stated that there was no inventory available of the item and the "ready for pickup" was a system generated error. If you are going to emphasize your "18 minute in-store pickup", at least get your system glitches worked out and don't make customers drive to the store to be disappointed. read more

I normally love this store but upon us making the trek out to Westmont for our new virus software (because ours will be expiring in 10 days) they were completely sold out! They usually have everything in stock but they didn't have anything I came for today!! Then I have the option to go to their other store in Chicago!? But of course I'd call first but they've never been out of stock of anything before! I wanted the 3 user- 1 year software which they were completely sold out. The salesperson suggested I buy 3 individual softwares at $59.99!? Did he think I was born yesterday?? And to think he said it with a straight face!! When the 3 computers/ 1 year software was $79.99!? Ahhhh no not that desperate!! I combed the Internet for this software- which ESET is harder to find however my computers have all been great since we've been using them! I did end up getting it at Best Buy online with free shipping but won't get here (hopefully) until the day before it expires! Best Buy has it online, but not in store! Oh well! Maybe Micro Center may want to try to get for me online before I search for it somewhere else?? Since they didn't have it in stock!!? I used to be a big Micro Center customer, they always have good prices on what I'm looking for and it's never too crowded in the store. Three weeks ago, my MacBook shot out on me and it was going to be $1400 to fix at the Apple Store...Yikes, no thank you. So I decided to spend the $70 to get my Internal Hard Drive copied at Micro Center onto my external. I drop it off, no problem...Two days later, I get a call saying they can't access my external HD I gave them...Weird because I used it the day before. So I pick it up from them two days later since I was out of town when they called and give them a new external drive to use. I give them permission to delete anything off this drive so we could fit my internal drive remains onto it. I get a call two days later again saying that they couldn't fit anything on that drive (???) forcing me to come back to the store and pick up a new external drive of course. Meanwhile, I'm freaking out because all my footage from the past year is on the first drive. They tell me it's "broken" and it isn't able to read on my iMac at home either. I went in to get it checked and it reads on someone else's computer but tells me it's now formatted for Windows (Apparently they ONLY use windows at Microcenter even though they knew I was using a Mac product since I gave them a MacBook to copy...you'd think they would warn me of that before formatting my Hard Drive considering they don't know how important the footage on there is) So I have to copy 1.4 TB of footage onto a different drive (Took about 2 hours at the place I went to get it checked at) and then copied BACK onto my drive after reformatting it. So there goes about 4 hours of my day I won't get back of literally sitting there waiting for my drive to copy. And so this whole process of getting my internal HD back is about 8 days. I called frequently to see what they were getting copied. There were a few major things I needed from that drive...A cover letter and a few applications that were backed up on Time Machine to my drive. The guy on the phone says those are all copied, low and behold when I get it back, they're not copied on there. Great...just spent $70 and a ton of my time on getting a bunch of pointless files from 2+ years ago copied onto my drive. Now I'm an extremely understanding person. I've been working with technology for awhile and know it's not always the workers fault/sometimes is the technology or the customer. However, I was given so much misinformation about this and the process ended up being completely pointless because nothing I actually needed was copied. So I get an email with a satisfactory survey and stuff and I emailed the attached email with my concerns and don't get an answer back... What makes me mad is that I gave this place the benefit of the doubt, even defended one of the workers when the customer in front of me was yelling at someone about them being slow and now I understand his frustration. I don't plan on coming back unless it's for a partial refund. If only my time could be refunded too. read more

Somehow I contracted a very nasty virus last week, and my IT guy was going to have to put my 6 year old tower on life support. A cursory cost/benefit analysis suggested that it was time to buy a new one. Dell has always been our go to computor vendor, but I wasn't thrilled with the prospect of ordering on line, and then waiting 7 days for delivery. The same IT guy suggested Micro-Center as an alternative. I'm very happy I heeded his advice. Micro-Center is absolutely brimming with every computer related item you can imagine. If you can't find it here, you don't need it. I quickly navigated my way to the appropriate section of the store, and I received expert help from John. The price of my new tower was extremely competitive. I was able to take delivery immediately, and the store's general manager personally thanked me for my business. Everyone from the GM on down was very competent and friendly, and that's hard to find these days. I'll be back. read more

I made a purchase and noticed the item go on sale, I called them on the phone and gave them the receipt number and was credited, WOW Fry and Best Buy do not offer that! The best of the best for advice that I have found other than online forums and the Apple Genius Bar. Selection of of quality products not cheaper items with cheaper prices like Fry's, remember the saying you get what you pay for! CONS Sometimes I feel I am stalked by there security, and I spends thousands a year, is it enough to drive me away, no but I still leave every time with a slightly less good feeling about my new purchase with buyers remorse quickly hitting! The worst service ever in any store of any kind. Visit #1: wanted an IPod. Was directed to a room in the back where I waited 45 minutes to be waited on while the only staff person in the room carried on a phone conversation. Finally went to Target. Because Microcenter has a good reputation I figured it was a fluke. Visit # 2 Bought anti-malware software on recommendation of salesperson that is not appropriate to my computer and is not returnable. Visit #3: Lied about availability of software to replace what had to be scrubbed from my virus ridden PC. There will be a visit # 4 sometime after hell freezes over. Hello, I wish that I could rate them higher. My many visits (along with many family members) to the store have been excellent but I have one issue. They simply don't answer e-mail inquiries! Unfortunately, that problem plagues many retailers today! On a number of occasions I've mailed to a retailer with a simple question prior to visiting the store with no response! In those other cases, I just gave up and ordered the merchandise from an on-line dealer and the local store lost the business! Terrible customer service terrible sales staff...focus is on data collection, no one cares if you're actually buying products

This weekend started really lousy as my computer died early Saturday afternoon. Guessing that it was the power supply, that I had bought all my parts at Micro Center, and that the power supply was covered by a warranty that I purchased there, I decided to let them take a look at it and fix it. To make a long story short, two things really annoyed me. First, no one was able to find any records of my past purchases let alone of the warranty I purchased. Three separate people could not find it. Second, I got a call early Sunday morning regarding the cost of the new power supply and a $60 installation fee. I assumed that the work was already done so I went to the store to pickup my machine. Turns out it was not done and they were still installing the power supply. Had I known this I would have done the work myself and saved the $60 as I am a hobbiest and build my own machines. (He stated that he was asking for permission to make the changes so there was a slight miscommunication.) At this point I had ever right to be a bit upset. The lady handed my the receipt and suggested that I fill out the survey listed on the bottom. I wasn't planning on doing so but when I got home I figured someone should know about the experience I had. From everything I know about Micro Center, this had to be an aberration. So I wrote a comment similar to the one above. It seems like 5 minutes after I hit the send button I got a call from the manager apologizing for my experience. She also managed to find the old records which were under a different name/address. She ended up refunding the cost of the power supply AND the cost of installation! My weekend all of a sudden went from bleak to amazing. Service like this is hard to find. This is the second time in about 4 years that I have had an incident with Micro Center and in each case the eventual resolution was outstanding. The moral of the story is that if you have any problems/complaints, don't hold it in! Talk to the manager. She is always available and very understanding. These people will do ANYTHING to win and keep your business. My son wants a gaming computer soon which I will be building from scratch. You can bet that I will do all of my shopping at Micro Center. I made the trek here from Elgin because Micro Center's pricing on processors was incredible - $90 cheaper than NewEgg online. They also had a hard drive I was looking for that I was willing to pay a little more for (plus sales tax), but wouldn't have to risk the thing being bounced around in shipping. I came here straight from making some purchases at Fry's. This was my first visit to Micro Center. The store was smaller than I expected, but still decent-sized. I made my way to the computer parts, tucked in a corner of the store. It was a small area, but they had everything a person could need to build a PC. Don't know that I can say that anymore about the CompUSA stores converted from TigerDirect. At Fry's, salesmen constantly bugged me. Here, I was greeted by a salesman upon my arrival to the PC parts dept. I said I was just looking. He left me alone and let me browse unmolested! Thank you sir! I took a look around at the selection and looked for some deals. When it was time for me to get my CPU, the salesman was helpful and polite. If I need help with something, I'll ask for it, and that salesman understood. I didn't get a chance to look at the rest of the store, since I was pressed for time. I won't hesitate to shop here again. Pricing on most items looked OK. Of course, it will take a really good sale for me to drive from Elgin again. read more

I bought a Powerspec (Their own pc brand) open box a few years ago, it's a workhorse!. Another plus is the flash drives and memory cards. First off, I never understand how a person can give a bad review or a mediocre one because he or she doesn't read, ask questions, or ask for help. We are all different. Some people do not want to be bombarded with Sales people. They want to peruse the offerings at their leisure. They don't want to feel like the staff is just trying to make a sale. Besides, some people have done their homework when they come in or are already PC savvy so don't need/want help. I have been a loyal customer for over 5 years. I wanted to buy my son a computer for graduation from 8th grade so I talked to several LAN techs at work, and they all suggested Micro Center. I had gone online and researched the laptop I thought I wanted. However, when I saw the numerous selections, I asked someone for help. I honestly wasn't look for decor (not to be rude), but was looking for PC knowledge. I told him what the PC was for. He also asked tons of questions and then helped me pick my computer. It was a few hundred more than I wanted to pay but to be honest, that computer worked from then until my kids broke the hinge to the screen/cover and then his friend finished it off dropping it. When my son graduated from H.S., I again went online to research computers. This time, based on reviews for the laptop I found, I paid for it online and went to pick it up. I didn't need help. I just wanted to get in and get back out. It has been perfect for the past year. I will be buying my daughter's 8th grade PC in June. I have also recommended the store to numerous friends over the years. They have all be completely satisfied. read more

I love to walk through the stores and look at the new techie stuff in real rather than seeing it online. However, you are lucky if you find something off the shelf if you are looking for something specific though -they direct you online. I guess that's the sign of the times so have to deal with it. So check before heading to the store. What bothers me if we do ask for help from one of the guys on the floor - you are lucky if you find anyone who can help other than going online and checking, rarely any real expertise in the techy sense. Some wannabe techies- worse than me!! Plus it appears all they want to do is put that silly sticker on the item you are planning to purchase - just because they located it on a store shelf somewhere - really they want credit for that? Prices are reasonable. Service and delivery are not. Be careful when ordering on line. Even though they send you notice that they have shipped, do not count on it. They have a practice of immediately creating shipping documents and sending an email saying that your item has been shipped but, in fact, has not. For myself, this happened. When questioned, customer service stated that they are meeting their commitment even after admitting that this is their practice. I question the business practices of any company that promises one thing and does not deliver. They have competitors that do meet their promises. read more

Males, beware if you go to use their bathroom in the back... you may have some female entering there and knocking on the stall door asking if there is a blue water bottle left behind . That was my experience there today after I returned an item for a refund. I started to exit but then I had to use the washroom as I was not feeling well. As I took my time to use the washroom stall ... not getting into details... I could hear maybe 1 or 2 people enter and exit the washroom then some other person entered , I thought at first was just another gentleman using the exterior facilities, the person came close to the large stall and knocked on the door and I said someone is in here. Then the voice of a female asked me if there some blue water bottle in the the stall. I said , in a kind of disgusted, suspicious tone, no there is no water bottle in here and proceeded to finish up and felt a bit rushed as I became paranoid and uncomfortable and regretted that I should have just gone home even if not feeling well for that moment. I mean, how rude of her to just enter the men's washroom and if knowing someone is using the stall, she could not exit and wait until I was done and exited the washroom before entering to do a search for an alleged water bottle? If they thought some water bottle was in the bathroom, why did they not send a male into the MALE washroom to inquire? I believe Something fishy is going on in this place...-- avoid! this is how some of these misunderstandings could start and escalate to something more serious.. I all had from Microcenter that day was the receipt for the returned item (a Chromecast Audio device that as misleading in itself as it did not have optical audio output as indicated on the box --deception of an item sold in this store and Google). I really believe they thought I was stealing something and wanted to check up on me because of some racial issue. Black (or darker-skinned) males beware if you have to use the bathroom at this place because they may think you're stealing something and have a female of all people enter the washroom so they can accuse you of something more sinister. Avoid this place... next thing , due to Trump being in office and the country is going backward in time (1930s , 1920s), maybe they could bring lynching back? I had problems with Microcenter years ago when I was dressed so professionally or casually and some (maybe Russian ) employee addressed me so dismissively with a "what's up?!" comment. I felt that had he addressed a White male even dressed less appropriately he would have addressed that person with more dignity and respect "how may I help you, sir?" not "what's up" that was so stereotypical of a person like who earned a Master's degree from IIT? I deserve to be treated better, but they just don't want to.... oh while I am on a roll, the way they have the toilet paper dispenser set up is not conducive for those who have disabilities. It is set up where one has to do acrobatics bending down to try to find the toilet paper lead to pull the paper down so one can freshen oneself. It is good there is a hand sanitizer dispenser above there but the toilet paper dispenser is very difficult to maneuver to keep getting enough toilet paper to ...freshen oneself easily. That was one reason why it took a bit of time to finish up in there. They should place the toilet paper dispenser higher to make it easier to pull the paper out. I think I am done with this place besides, French fries have better deals and more variety. Back to Microcenter: Addendum: I called them and spoke to the manager and we discussed these things... I told the manager to review any cameras or surveillance videos to see what happened when the person with a female voice entered the washroom because the manager claimed they do not enter washrooms for this reason or something. in a sense denying my claim of what happened. the manager said they do not have cameras monitoring something in the back area. So if you go into this store and feel you are going to be racially profiled for any reason,make sure to have your cameras rolling on your smartphones or whatever to record and compensate this store's incompetency. Keep your cameras, recording devices rolling even if you're in the bathroom . read more

Used to be the place to go to find something obscure or run to grab something that they show as in stock on their website. Now, the website and even the in store kiosk mean nothing because if it isn't on the shelf then the sales people can't find it either. I actually was looking for something that showed 5 pieces in stock, but none were on the shelf. I actually came across a sales person that looked on the shelf and made a half hearted attempt at finding it. He actually left then came back a few minutes later and said "Oh you still want that? I stopped looking for it." Perhaps I wasn't clear, but printing out a stock value from the in-store kiosk and telling him I wanted it wasn't enough. I told the manager and she said, "I guess they can't find it." Bye MicroCenter, it was fun but when I open packages from online retailers I don't receive a note that says "I guess they couldn't find it". Oh, and the Westmont IL Microcenter is trying to keep up with the local Fry's by changing their store to look just like Fry's. Too little too late. read more

LONG, BUT PLEASE READ: DO NOT TRUST THIS PLACE I strongly discourage anyone from going to this place. No integrity, not trustworthy at all. Apple recommended this place when I needed a new hard drive for my MacBook Pro in March. In June, I had problems again; Apple did diagnostics on it (via phone) and determined it was again the hard drive. Luckily, I had purchased the extended warranty. I returned to Micro Center, explaining that the hard drive they sold me in March needed replacing again. They said that they need to do diagnostics on it, because unlikely the new hard drive is at fault. They said they would not charge me for the diagnostics. I did not have a good feeling from the moment they were telling me all of this, but I agreed. 2 days later, the tech manager, Nick C., calls me to tell me that even with the new hard drive installed, the MRI they are performing on my lap top is failing all tests: ethernet connection, display, unable to run operating system; suspects motherboard and estimate is $800-900. I declined the repairs, because the laptop is 7 years old. I went to Apple the next day, intending to purchase a new MacBook. While there, I requested the techs there look at my MacBook and tell me their opinion. I gave them the WRITTEN REPORT BY MICROCENTER. They ran MRI and NOTHING WRONG EXCEPT THE HARD DRIVE. They urged me to go back to Microcenter, gave me their diagnostic report as verification of accurate findings, and told me to insist on installing new hard drive. I went back to Microcenter, and spoke with manager Nick C.
