We ordered the fried chicken plate , portion was very small for 16.00 and Also ordered the large thick fried catfish which only had 3 small filets on it for 17.95. I asked the bartender if this was the large catfish plate and she said yes , we changed it. The large has 3 pieces and the small has 2 pieces of catfish. Came here for my brother's rehearsal dinner party and to meet his new bride's family for the first time. It had been years and I mean YEARS since I had been here. It had been so long that I remember when the place was just the older small building with a wait time that would be hours! But worth it! Now there is a newer larger building with plenty of seating area, large bar, and very nice outside patio area. I briefly checked out the patio area just because the mosquitoes were out and didn't want to become a mosquito sandwich or have bumps for the wedding but during the summer I bet this place is the place to be. Inside, we were able to secure a table large enough for our entire party. We did let them know ahead of time we would have a large party but we had to wait until everyone arrived to be seated. I ordered a crawfish cake with remolaude sauce for an appetizer which was magnificent although small. I could have had more! Our table had fried onion rings which were thick onions and not necessarily my favorite yet still good. For dinner I had fried shrimp with fried thin catfish, which was so good. There's something to be said for the thin catfish. Try it and you will see! For dessert I had a bite of banana split but was so full from everything else I didn't over indulge, besides I'm not used to eating so much fried food in one sitting. I had been waiting for quiet sometime to come back here. I wanted to make sure it was a nice evening so that the ladyfriend and I could eat outdoors and enjoy the weather. On this particular October Saturday night the weather was perfect. So imagine my disappointment when I was told the deck was closed. I then asked about the patio but was told it was full. The lady didn't even check, when I went to the bathroom I could clearly see 2 tables open. When we finished eating and went outside to check out the outdoor area, 3 tables were open. GRRRR! After the hostess lied and actually sat us, the experience got better. We order a few beers(only bottle, no draft) and since it was October, they had several German beers to choose from. They served them with frosty mugs so that was a plus. We shared an order of Italian Oysters to start. I had these once before and remembered them being really good. This time not so much. You get like 6 oysters baked in a little casserole dish with Parmesan cheese, garlic bread crumbs and italian seasoning. The cheese wasn't really all the way melted and you couldn't really taste the oysters. It needed to be cooked longer. For the entree, I ordered their "World Famous thin-cut catfish". A small order is 13.50 and is not small. The large order is 16.50 and could easily feed 2 people. The catfish are phenomenal. The best I have had. I don't generally like catfish but these are thin, lightly breaded, and fried to perfection. There is zero oil/grease on the fish or your plate. We decided to split the banana bread pudding with a scoop of vanilla ice cream because I love all things banana. So glad we actually got this because it was sooooo good. I'd definitely come back despite the crappy hostess and terrible idea of not opening the outdoors. I'll skip the app next time though and just dig in to the catfish. read more

Very bland food. I could have gotten better seafood in Wisconsin where I live. While in the south, especially the New Orleans area, I expect my shrimp to be spicy.. almost to the point of my mouth burning. I would have to say the ketchup was the only thing on our table that had any flavor. We ordered the stuffed crab, boiled shrimp, catfish with fried shrimp, gumbo, and alligator. The stuffed crab was over breaded. Way too much breading. The boiled shrimp were rubbery and bland, no seasoning at all. The catfish had no flavor, so bad in fact that we had to use ketchup to even get it down our throats. The gumbo was gravy mix for the gumbo stock. My fiancé is creole, he took one bite and pushed it away. The alligator had sweet and sour in it. Definitely not worth the time or money for this place. The food was good, but their pitiful Covid-19 precautions left me livid. Having suffered through 2 weeks of Covid back at the end of March, I have been doing everything I can not to get it again. Dining out is a risk, and I won't go back here for a long while. I watched a steady procession of customers be taken to their tables and THEY WEREN'T WEARING MASKS! Seafood Louisiana Style Original The seafood platter here is among the best I have ever had. The establishment is the originator of the fried cornmeal battered thin catfish. The original owners sold this some years back but they still maintain the original recipes for the most part. Off the beaten path the still gather lines waiting to get in. The fried food is topped notch. The only complaint I had was with the stuffed crab which comes part of the seafood platter. When the original owners had it, they made the best stuffed crabs. Now the stuffed crab dressing is on the dry side but still boast good flavor and crab meat. This place is great for a nice drive and a good meal away from city life. A good change of pace about 35 min outside of New Orleans. Best thin fried catfish around...and I dont really like catfish. Really! Soft shell crab was outstanding. Read the menu carefully. Writing is a lil small for my aging eyes. I misread the softshell crab to say $8.25 when it actually says "market price" (which turned out to be $14!!). I thought we were getting a good deal when I ordered one large thin fried catfish plate and a softshell crab as a SIDE to split. We didnt know what market price was, but that is my own fault for misunderstanding it. The service was great and attentive..even when I argued over the price and realized my mistake. We were served a nice warm mini loaf of french bread and crackers. Then a plate of tartar sauce and cocktail sauce arrived. Next came our food and mini plates. The catfish came with fries, 2 hush puppies, and slaw butbwe requested potato salad instead. Fries were cook well and you could tell that they are cooked seperately from the seafood ..same with the hushpuppies. The potato salad also pretty good a bit heavy on the spicy mustard but still good. We really enjoyed our food. Anyway, the atmosphere is nice. The food is great. Best fried seafood around. My mouth is watering now as I write. You get plenty on your plate. We had enough to take home and bring to lunch. There is an open deck in the back and a sand play area for the kids. Also a bar with live music right on the water. You can dock your boat right up to the place. It's kind of in the middle of nowhere, but on our drive from Louisiana to Mississippi we stopped at this local institution for lunch. Despite its location, it's quite popular. We happened to be there for lunch on a Thursday that a Saints game was happening in New Orleans, and the place was packed with fans taking a pit stop on their way to the game. Geaux Saints! From other reviews, I knew I wanted to try the BBQ oysters and the thin fried catfish. I was not disappointed. There are five BBQ oysters per order, and it was a perfect way to start the meal. Save your french bread and sop up the tasty sauce! The thin fried catfish was also a treat -- crispy and flavorful. Someone in our group ordered a half order of the catfish with fried oysters and greatly enjoyed it. The oysters were plump and were served crisp and hot. The broiled flounder was just OK. We sprung for the extra crab lump meat to be served on top. For the extra $6.95 for the crab, we didn't get as much as we expected and it did not add to the overall experience. We drove an hour from New Orleans to visit Middendorf's based on a recommendation from our Airbnb host and we were NOT disappointed! Their special is the thin fried catfish served with cole slaw, hush puppies and fries. We ordered the large plate and it was piled high with the crispiest, tastiest catfish I've ever had! Also, people coming in back door from boats with no mask camping out a tables left vacant in dining room between diners that had been seated. Food was good, as always. This place is old school seafood at its best. It is always busy and always fresh. The thin fried catfish and shrimp is fantastic. The fried frog legs are solid. You can't go wrong with the turtle soup. The outdoor patio is a welcome addition from a few years back. The parking lot was packed, and I think it's safe to say when it's busy like this, be prepared for parking wars and to get cursed out by someone else vying for a parking space. It would have been helpful if one of the hostesses would have come to us and get information so people can decide if they want to wait or not because as you know the Louisiana heat can be brutal. They have this policy where you can't bring any outside food or drinks. Understandable, but incredibly stupid when you serve people brown water (see photo)! UNACCEPTABLE!!! So I couldn't bring my water bottle with me. When we mentioned the brown water to the waiter, he stated it's because of the mineral content. No ish! But is it because your iron pipes are corroding or an elevated concentration of iron or other minerals that I don't need or something else?! Anyway, we weren't celebrating me so I just ordered a frozen margarita. It was decent. Stuffed broiled whole flounder: there was nothing special about the flounder, but the stuffing on top was full of crabmeat. Mostly bland, but filling. We also ordered the thick cut catfish on the side for an additional cost. That was such a waste of money. I think I can say that was some of the worst fried fish we've ever had. The fries were cold and nothing special. I forgot to ask if I could sub the coleslaw so that went uneaten. The hushpuppies were hard and bland as well. Spicy crawfish poppers: there was nothing spicy about them. As a matter of fact, they were very bland and did not come served with any dipping sauce, which is much needed. I'll cut them a little slack because it was graduation and Mother's Day weekend, but not much. read more

My impression was: meh. Second visit impression: double meh. The house specialty thin catfish was like eating a cracker with no taste. The oysters were overcooked and tasteless. In fact, the only thing that had any taste was the tartar and cocktail sauces. The fries were out of a frozen bag. Prices were about 25-40% more than they should have been. I agree with others who say it's not worth a special trip. If you're in the immediate area, maybe it's worth a stop, but only if you know that it's nothing more than glorified fast food. read more

The older lady hostess seemed super stressed and short tempered. We sat on the patio and our server there was amazing, just really helpful and personable. Unfortunately, the food was gross. The service was extremely friendly and accommodating. Some of my party were extremely difficult in the beginning and the server was 100% pleasant, even when I felt she should have been frustrated. Now to that, the menu doesn't list NON ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES! This was the cause of the issues at the beginning of our visit with the server, no one knew THAt the drinks would be different sizes since the drinks are served from the bottle and not on tap. Also that since the drinks were bottled there weren't any refills. Nor the cost of the bottle drinks and their different sizes are known until it arrives. We ordered a Coke and a Lemonade. The Coke bottle was probably 8-10oz. And almost 2$ the lemonade was 16oz and PINK. All of these issues would have been nice to Know before we ordered them. But everything else was great! The owner even allowed my mother to bring her own bottle of hot sauce into the restaurant since they didn't use the Louisiana brand. I had the Italian salad and it was perfect! Anchovies and caper make this salad such a delightful difference. The seafood platters were a big hit and the shrimp were both sautéed and fried. Everything else was fried and excellent! I've gone there since I was a kid every time we travelled to New Orleans, but the last time I went they had added a dock, outside seating, and a place for kids to play on the sand. This stepped it up for me. My wife has the crawfish platter, son had boiled shrimp, and I got the old standby Thinfish. Thinfish was good, crawfish could have had more heat (everybody is different on how they like their crawfish, I can't fault them there.) my son said his shrimp was very good. Always a good time there. Atmosphere improved substantially with outdoor atmosphere. If your not from the south, understand, it's hot here! I had really high hopes for my first trip here, and I felt the food was decent but nothing amazing. I want to try one more time and order something different. I don't eat fish, which is what I know they are famous for, so I got the fried shrimp plate and added on a soft shell crab. My husband got the thin fried catfish. We also started with onion rings. The onion rings were good. My husband liked his fish. The coleslaw was decent, the hush puppies were pretty bad. The shrimp tasted okay, but was overcooked so the texture was rubbery. The soft shell crab was bad. The legs were good, but the middle part tasted, the best I can describe it, is dirty/fishy. Not at all how a good soft shell crab is supposed to taste. The meal itself was an average meal, but the prices are above average prices, which makes it a bummer to pay so much and leave not satisfied. We expected Middendorf's to be busy on labor day weekend and were not disappointed. However, we were delighted to find the covered patio open. It has a view of the water and bridges. The patio area includes quite a few amenities. The colorful decor was fun. Casual setting. There's two piers for boating customers, a covered separate smoking area, a sandy area with water spigots and buckets so kids can play in the sand, fans, a bar with a tv, and bathrooms close by. The women's restroom was clean, no one in our party used the men's. For an appetizer we ordered onions rings with ranch dressing. The rings tasty okay, but the inside was soggy. We ordered one small thin catfish plate and one small thick catfish plate. Both arrived quickly and were good. Drinks were to order. The staff was friendly and attentive even though they were slammed. read more
