Smells like pee-pee, stale beer and a whiff of sweat mixed with semen - sticky floors, sticky tables, watery drinks, glasses everywhere and enough cruising going on to autopilot an aircraft carrier. Silly queens standing around with their mouths half agape staring at the TV so they don't have to talk to anyone - and since they are all pretending to be so young (At 50+ - but hey - I'm not an age-ist - just a real-ist....) they can't talk because when they do you realize right away how shallow they are - Oh - and did I mention that the place smells like pee-pee, stale beer, pine sol and sweat? read more

My friends and I were there last weekend for labor day weekend celebrating our friend's bachelor party when the bouncer didn't let us go in because management didn't allow for a "group" of people to wear theme shirts. He used the excuse of past people who wore theme shirts for being roudy. We felt outcast & discriminated as a gay group of friends celebrating a friend's last days as a single gay. If we can't celebrate the accomplishments of our community within our community than how we will we grow & allow change to happen? at first i was afraid to go here by myself.. just because it's one of the bars around the area that you can't see what's going on inside. therefore, my first thought that this might be some strippers club. LOL i know a friend that LOVES to go here so MUCH, and few weeks ago, he performed her with his drag on...man, i missed that opportunity! happy hour deals are awesome, and i feel like they put more liquor than any other bars (though, the general idea of the Castro bars is they ALWAYS put more liquor, no matter what! WORTH THE MONEY, TIME, AND WHAT-NOT!) also, they have huge TV screens, because THEY SHOW SOME SHOWS every night.. like Glee, American Idol, etc.... and, they have like mashups and old-school music videos. To the BAT CAVE! Okay, so it's a little dark in there without any windows to the outside world, but hey, you gotta love 2 for 1 Mondays! That's right, from the time Midnightsun opens till the time it closes, the bartenders are pouring 2 for 1 drinks. Speaking of the bartenders, if you happen upon this bar and see a cute indie, black rimmed glasses wearing cutie working the bar (Johnny), make sure to tell him that Shane sent ya! ;o) The music and TV skits can be a little loud at times, but you can still have a conversation with the people you're surrounded by. You'll find the age of most patrons to be anywhere from their late twenties on up. Don't be frightened my little ones to step into this bar, everyone is welcome with open arms. There are two separate bathrooms located here, one for men and one for women. Feel free to use both, but also be a gentleman and offer up the women's stall if one so happens upon you if you're waiting in line. Gotta love the ice-filled trough. If you're truly brazen, take on the guy next to you and see who can melt the most ice. Note: ATM/Credit Cards can be used here. This is the place to go when there is nowhere else to be. The drinks are average (best bet is beer / wine), the staff is so-so (the GM is an A-hole and tossed my buddy for no reason at all) and the videos are so random and obscure that only the late Andy Warhol could appreciate them (who the hell listens to Saint Etienne). And then, there's the crowd... The people who frequent Midnight Sun are nice enough, but after standing around and having a couple of drinks, one begins to get the feeling they are standing in a warehouse for broken-down and disabled Stepford Wives. The crowd rarely interacts with each other, but rather they stand around like entranced robots staring up in desperation at the JumboTron screens in hopeful anticipation of a video they might know and/or be able to tap there toes too. The desperation that emulates from the crowd is both disturbing and heart-breaking. The last time I was at the "Sun", I felt so sorry for the crowd that I actually considered coming back to pass out pamphlets to a local church social or bingo game... anything to help those lost souls find salvation and meaning to there lonely lives! This is definitely at the bottom of the food chain when it comes to gay "night-life" and probably the least entertaining of the local Castro district bars. read more

Ironically, I went here a few years ago with some friends, and while it was interesting, it was old... and I mean like "Daddy 50+ old". While the people I saw looked nice, no one talked to us, and the bartender was kinda impatient. Im not saying its a BAD place, it was VERY busy that Friday night. I love the Midnight Sun!!!! I remember it was one of the first bars I went into when I moved to San Francisco about 5 years ago. What I like about it is that there is NO PRESSURE!!!! The people are regulars and they are very friendly. I have met so many great people in this place and everyone knows your name. It feels like a second home for me. Me and my friends get together there every Monday for Happy Hour. We also frequent the place after work a couple more days a week. You get in have a few and make it home for dinner at a decent hour. The bartenders are very sweet and genuine. They really make your drinks with care, even if it is busy. Midnight Sun...do your thing!!!! read more

The Midnifght Sun is Ok. It pretty much depends on how good the VJ is that night. The reason being, it is very dark, most people have to stand (there are about 15 bar stools and some seating along the sidewall), it gets very packed and all attention is focused on one of the giant screens on the front and rear walls (there are a few smaller screens over the bar). The volume is generally loud, so not much talking goes on (especially during the good clips). The bouncer on Sunday evening was very rude and unprofessional. I was there to meet up with a couple friends before dinner and had an empty coffee cup in my hand. I asked him if there is a nearest trash can so I can toss out the empty cup. He bluntly told me "that's my problem and figure it out". So I took a walk a few blocks down the street to throw away my empty coffee cup into a trash receptacle. Then when I came back to the bar and nicely informed him that there is a street trash receptacle within a walking distance (just for his future reference). I guess he didn't like my comment so he told me that I cannot enter the bar. He then told me that the bar is doing fine without our business. So I took all my friends to Toad Hall and we're all having a wonderful time there. FYI, Toad Hall has a trash can in front of their door for people to use before entering their bar and the bouncer is super nice and helpful to their patrons. read more

They switch to the latest pop music videos during commercials, like Lady Gaga (a must) and Rihanna's S&M. Neighborhood fixture (used to be on Castro St waaay back in the day..) I generally like this bar though it can get very packed weekday evenings during happy-hour. It's also a bit "cliquey" - some small groups have been holding court here for years and don't like it if outsiders try to intrude on their space. The two main activities are watching the video screens (for music/comedy/current TV hits) or cruising while pretending to watch. I love the atmosphere. But I haven't been to the Castro since last month. The b/f is definitely keeping me in my suburban girl mode. Memories of the Castro still linger and it has a homing beacon which attracts me there(or any other place that's gay) They were showing "Beauty and the Beast" and had a nice disco ball the night I went. But I couldn't tell you anything about the patrons. I guess they were older, I think? Yeah, I don't remember. I had a long island ice tea and part of that night was a blur. Showed up on a Friday night. The bartender repeatedly served people who clearly arrived at the bar after I did. After the THIRD time he got a drink for someone ahead of me, the bartender apologetically explained he just had to serve this last person ahead of me. I'm 47 with a full head of white hair. Each guy served ahead of me was clearly under 30 years old. Are you fucking kidding me?!? Is this what Castro bars have become? At my income level I don't need to settle for this kind of discrimination. I took my money elsewhere and had a great night. No one needs to deal with this kind of bullying. There are other options. I have been to Midnight Sun many times but as I entered the bar the other night I was so warmly greeted by a young man named Garrett! This fine young man was so friendly, and flirty, as I asked what could be made for my friends who wanted something special and packed with flavor. Garrett questioned them to build an idea of what to make and so cleverly created specialty cocktails, on the fly, and made my friends feel like they were VIP! I highly recommend visiting the Midnight Sun, day or night, and I would request Garrett whenever possible!! Best bartender in the bay!!! read more

I've been coming to The Midnight Sun since nineteen hundred and eighty nine and the staff have always been like extended family. I care about what happens to them. A recent change has me fuming. They've cut the schedules of many of the staff in favor of a cheaper version of the beloved bar. The owners have brought bartenders over from another of their bars, Beaux, which caters to a younger 30ish crowd. The new bartenders are to put a stereotypically cute gay face to a bar to a be which has always been more inclusive. The drinks are now weak, but at the same price. The new vision sees them putting out a few tables, each with a bowl of Chex mix and a drink specials menu. Groundbreaking. Meanwhile, long time bartenders are seeing their schedules but to virtually nothing so the salaries manager can take up the shifts. Apparently, Les Natali's shi++y business practices that have sucked the flavor out of the Castro for years have now become the preferred business model. F your customer base. There's a marginal amount to be made off a younger crowd. News flash: your older clientele is far more loyal and tend to tip more than their younger counterparts who only follow the latest whim. In a few months, the Castro will be all the same piece of cheap Wonder bread with no flavor, but as long as the bars are filled with vapid people spending their allowance, who cares? Hopefully, The Edge will resist the trend. read more

Fail. I've been a regular Friday night customer since 2005, but those days are over. The place recently had either a management change or fell victim to a new owner who has ruined the place. It used to be a fun video bar with decent music, but now it's trying to be something it's not. Bad music with bad "go-go boys". Picture one or two sorry looking gay for pay strippers with no sense of rhythm standing on the bar attempting to dance while 98% of the crowd is ignoring them. Behind the bar all the regular long time bartenders are gone and replaced with 20-something socially retarded and entitled fools who do not know how to mix cocktails or even pour a proper beer. Hint to these dorks, when making a drink, the contents should reach the top of the glass, not stop 1/2-1 inch below the rim. Service is incredibly slow. Prepare to wait 10 minutes (yes, I've timed them the last couple of times I've gone in) for a drink even though there is only one person ahead of you. The bartenders are too busy dick'en around with the strippers and each other to pay attention to the clientele. The vast majority of the regulars are gone and do not seem to be coming back. The place never has a decent crowd anymore and does not appear to be on it's way into building a new regular crowd either. If you're in the neighborhood, keep walking. The party is over. I'm sure it will be only a matter of time before the place closes for good or undergoes another ownership change. It's too bad. This place used to be fun. Now it sucks. read more

they have 2 for 1 specials where you can buy 2-TWO cocktails for the price of 1!!! this is a fun bar located in the Castro. this was described to me as a "TV bar" and at first, i didn't understand why..... i thought - a lot of bars have TV's, so what makes this so special? i went and i found out.... they show a lot of music videos, BUT they also periodically show tv clips, or movie clips, and the bar literally quiets down while everyone watches what they put up on the screens. on 2 different occasions i saw a movie clip with a 3-some where all the guys got stuck together with super-glue (yes, it was as gruesome as it sounds), and on another visit i saw a Tosh.O clip of people riding a "super-sizzler" type carnival ride while eating banana's and drinking sprite.... there was lots of vomiting involved. bartenders are super nice, and it is a really fun atmosphere. read more

I've been going to the Midnight Sun for years, and have always found it a fun place to meet friends for special events and theme nights. In the past couple of years, I've enjoyed the Friday night happy hour nights a fair bit. Great drink specials, fun video programming, and a friendly crowd. Last night however, I arrived to find an almost entirely new staff behind the bar, and the worst service I've ever experienced there in over 16 years of going. I don't know what happened to their friendly, efficient veteran bar staff, but none of them were there. I waited 17 minutes (I timed it) in line for a beer while the new bartender leisurely chatted with the new (bad) go-go dancers, and mostly ignored the line of over a dozen people waiting to be served at his service station. I'm normally very patient with new staff as long as they're trying, and acknowledge customers in a timely manner, even if they can't get to them right away. This guy did neither. He completely ignored the line of customers in front of him, obliviously chatting with the go-go boys, and encouraging us to do so as well. No one in the line gave a care about the go-go boys. We wanted to be served. When we finally got to the front of the line the bartender treated us as if we'd just walked up to the bar, not even acknowledging the ludicrous wait we all had. The other patrons in line were openly growing impatient and hostile, and a few abandoned the line and left. It was dumbfounding to see this normally well-oiled establishment fail so miserably service-wise. The go-go boys were boring, and constantly interrupting the bartenders as they literally walked over the service stations on the bars while bartenders were (slowly) serving customers. The whole thing felt like a clueless mess. I'd love to know what happened to the veteran staff. Not sure if this was a fluke, or signs of new changes to come. I won't be going back anytime soon. read more

If you time it right, you get a great bartender, great drinks at a great price, and a good place to stand or sit and watch tv......Then every now and then, you walk in and it's a ghost town....it makes you wonder if some big event is going on and you're the only one who wasn't invited.
