We bought a strawberry cake and cheddar bacon muffin. Since he found out it was our first time there, he was generous enough to give us 2 free cinnamon sugar french puff. Everything didn't disappoint. Everything was fresh, soft and tasty. Intially, i did have my hesitation about how good they were going to be bc they visually looked dry, but i was wrong. A bakery located in, you guessed it, midtown (Sac). It's a grab-and-go bakery that's open only on weekends. The menu items shown on the business website are in rotation in terms of availability, so if you're eyeing on particular items you might want to call ahead to see if they're in stock. I instead went with the "oh that looks good.....I'll get one of those" approach and got a few goodies. My haul included a cheesecake slice, ginger scone, French puff, and sweet savory corn muffin. I was planning to also buy a pineapple custard square but the gentleman who was assisting me told me that it was the first time making this dessert and he offered me a free sample. Cool. He warned me that it's a bit rich and custard-y (love the transparency) but I actually ended up liking it (though I did agree that a little less sugar could've been used). Cheesecake slice: suuuper creamy and whipped to perfection! Very delicious and not too sweet. This cheesecake does have the iconic tang some cheesecakes have so if you like this cheesecake feature then the cheesecake here would be right up your alley. Ginger scone: really soft! The ginger is a little bit too overpowering for me though. I gave the rest of the scone to my sister, who loves ginger, and she gobbled it up in one sitting. Recommended for ginger fans like her. French puff: it's like a baked cinnamon sugar donut hole. Slightly too heavy-handed on the sugar coating, but I'd say it'd still complement well with a cup of tea or coffee to cut out some of the sweetness. Sweet savory corn muffin: wow, what a flavor bomb! There's a strong roasted corn taste to it. The jalapeño bits add a lot of great savory flavor as well (don't worry the muffin isn't spicy at all). I got the variation that doesn't have bacon, but I can imagine the muffin being even heartier with it. Great stuff here. Not sure why this bakery is flying under the Yelp radar. Definitely recommend stopping by here especially if you're in the midtown area! read more

A very tiny, cute shop tucked right off of J Street that smells overwhelmingly good. I have gone twice, both trips were right at opening time (8 a.m.) so I was able to choose from a full selection. The gentleman behind the counter had great recommendations and lets you pick out your own cinnamon roll, which was fun and made me feel like a kid. Everything was freshly made, and between the two trips I tried the French puff, coconut macaroon, browned butter butterscotch cookie (I think!), a corn, jalapeño, and bacon muffin, and a slice of coffee cake (not pictured). The French puff was donut like, and nicely sweet. The macaroon was soft inside but crunchy on the outside, though maybe a little too crispy for my taste. The cinnamon roll was my second favorite item, with a very good ratio of frosting to roll. The inside was crumbly but not dry. The cookie was delicious but incredibly rich, definitely a good item to share or eat a little bit of and save for later. The coffee cake was soft and chewy, but the flavor was a little bit more mild than I expected. The best item was the cornbread muffin with bacon and jalapeño. Not spicy at all, but still carried the actual taste of jalapeño while being deliciously buttery and warm. This item comes as a vegetarian item without bacon as well! read more

We were super excited to try this place out after reading about it in various places online. We walked in maybe past noon, and were able to get one of the last pieces of the caramel banana bread and a brownie. First of all, there was a darling little display before the open door which also had a sign. Displaying the way, you walk down to the intimate bakery worked by the wonderful couple. Apple Pay is available. The caramel banana bread was soooo delicious-the caramel gave it a "crack addiction", moist and perfectly balanced of sweet and nutty. The brownie husband chose was really chocolate-y in a good way..like decadent but not overbearing. Perfectly crisped on the corners! I'd love to come back...hoping they will also start selling gluten free options. I really liked how each item we got seemed to have its own distinction from a typical brownie or banana bread. So I heard that they were doing breakfast biscuits, from 7-9am on mondays. Headed out there, made it a little before 8am thinkin yeah, I'll get a biscuit. When I tell you that there must be people waiting at this place BEFORE 7 I mean it, they were sold out. This only made the mythical breakfast biscuit even more desirable. I will be there at 7am next week...hell, 6:45 even. Hanging my head in defeat I went to leave, only for him to come running after me offering just a biscuit so I wouldn't leave empty handed. This man is doing the lords work, aside from the biscuit being absolutely fire, he just gave it to me! I'm elated truly!! Midtown bakery thank you so much for being a literal bakery temple, whatever your recipes are or secret ingredient... it must be crack. It's so good my human brain can't even comprehend it. The cutest little bakery! Duck into this lil cutie for some morning coffee or afternoon snack. The owner was working when we walked in. He was so nice and proud of his pastries. He talked up through the various menu items. When we decided to split a pastry, he through in a second one because he "didn't want us to fight over it." The secret is out as evidenced by the lines at certain times of day. This is my favorite bakery in midtown and seems to have been discovered by many others at this point. The small space is so modest i walked by it for months before finally trying it. They are only open on weekends which is prob a good thing for my calorie intake. The baked goods are heavenly. The first thing I tried was their carrot cake - one of the best I ever had and I bake a really amazing one. Then one day we decided to try the cheesecake. OMG! How does she do it?! That texture and the lightness of it doesn't even make you feel guilty about eating the entire piece. I raved about it and brought my neighbor to try it too. One bite and she became an instant fan. So those became our go-to, must haves every weekend. Then one weekend they didn't have any carrot cake left so my husband brought home a slice of the chocolate tart. One bite and I wanted to slap someone. Talk about the perfect balance - the rich chocolate with a nice crust which is not masked by sugar like so many places tend to do. Actually all her baked goods are well balanced and nothing is overly sweet. That's how I bake so I appreciate finding a place that does the same. I have also tried various cookies and cakes - my favorite so far is the chocolate chip brown butter caramel one which tastes like childhood as does the chocolate cake! Wow! The first bite of that cake instantly transported me to childhood. Reminded me of the cakes my mom got for our birthdays. You really can't go wrong with anything you get from this little mom/pop bakery owned by a lovely couple. She does the baking and he works the register. The man who put my order was very nice, he asked me specifically which items I'd prefer such as if I'd like the middle slice or the end of the caramel banana bread as well as the cinnamon rolls and I thought that was very thoughtful and it was most definitely appreciated! The woman was also very sweet, she had a heart warming smile and greeted us upon arrival as well as wishing us a good day on our way out. The bakery was comfortable, small but comfortable. They had a few standing tables outside that we ate at and took a few pictures. I came in because I saw them on my instagram page and I wanted to try their sticky buns but they were out so I'll definitely be stopping by to try those out. Most definitely a place to visit; I have several times. I have a terrible sweet tooth but often lack the motivation and enthusiasm to prepare items myself. It is so awesome to have a kitchen away from home! The best lemon bars in my life, brown butter chocolate chip cookies (oh my goodness), brownies, carrot cake...and several other items! Midtown Bakery is only open on weekends right now, and they often run out before the end of the day. I got the sweet and savory corn muffin, brown butter chocolate chip caramel cookie and the french breakfast puff. They were all REALLY good! The corn muffin wasn't dry as most corn muffins are, and it had bacon, jalapeños and cheddar cheese. It was really savory and there was a hint of spice but was in no way spicy. The cookie was really good, it was massive and it was chewy and crisp on the outside, while not being too sweet. And the french breakfast puff was sweet but not sickly sweet, it's basically dough rolled in sugar and nutmeg. It sounds simple but it's really good. What they have on the menu is different every week, but I think the corn muffin is something they have every weekend. They post often on their Instagram/Facebook accounts on the weekend, check it out to see what is available. You definitely want to get there sooner than later because they do sell out. It's a couple who owns it and once they sell out, they're out. There's street parking in front of the building, and the keep and eye out for the blue door. There's not huge sign or anything, and the shop is actually on 23rd Street, right as you turn left off of J Street. This small, unassuming storefront has delicious baked goods, definitely worth getting up early for on the weekends. read more

Filled with strawberry purée with cream cheese strawberry buttercream. Moist & delicious - some of the best cake I've ever had. It blows away Rick's dessert diner up the street. Tried the carrot cake and French puff. The carrot cake was delicious. Made with fresh ingredients, moist, and the buttercream tasted amazing. I wasn't a huge fan of the French puff (plain flavor), but my boyfriend did so 5 stars all the way. Carrot cake at Rick's Diner cannot compete one bit. Must try!! Plus friendly service. There aren't words to describe how amazing Midtown Bakery is. We've been many times and have tried nearly the entire menu. Their baker is a master. The cinnamon rolls are the best I've ever had.
