He prescribed me more CBT-I. It was in the goddamn referral that CBT-I had already failed. What a waste of my time and money. He also made a blanket statement "medication is never the answer." Not, "medication is a last resort", not "medication should not be used lightly," but "medication is never the answer." That's a religious statement, not a scientific one. When I mentioned my experience with CBT-I and how it made my sleep problems worse, he said he wasn't an expert on CBT-I. He literally claimed ignorance on a treatment he just tried to sell me. It would be as if an orthopedic surgeon had said "I'm not an expert on physical therapy." At that point you'd seek a different surgeon. I had to pry a sleep study out of him, he was resistant to even giving me a sleep study, saying I should retry CBT-I, a treatment that had already failed me once before. I ended up canceling the sleep study and saught treatment elsewhere with better results. I decided that given how poorly the doctor had listened during the session, I didn't trust him to actually interpret the results in good faith.

I was able to use techniques of sleep compression to readjust my body clock, and the results have been good. I should say something about my incredible sleep dentist, Dr. Gail Henry who made my mandibular advancement device. She is super-smart and competent but also warm and generous with her time and attention. Great Doctor. My CBT-therapist Dr. Scherer was helpful in introducing me to CBT-I and, as I said earlier, the overall benefit I received from him and this program was significant, and I'm grateful for that. Dr. Scherer himself I've found to be cold, a bit stiff, without a whole lot of relational or empathic ability.

I feel so comfortable talking to her and trust everything she says. She is truly such a master of her craft. She also was the only doctor to get to the bottom of my complex sleep disorder. For several years, I was gaslit by doctors telling me that I couldn't sleep because of my mental state. I did one sleep test with Dr. Park and she was immediately able to identify the problem and fix it. She truly has been a godsend because my quality of life has improved so drastically since becoming a patient. I keep my insurance specifically as a PPO so I can stay in network with her. Thank you, Dr. Park and your wonderful team!!!

The majority of my complaint is related to a PA-C who I believe no longer works there. That said I hope Dr. Park has since changed her ways, and actually meets with patients past the initial diagnosis, rather than pawning rhem off on a PA-C, never to meet with that patient again. 2023: My main issue with Dr. Park is not seeing Dr. Park. Her website describes all of her accolades, but you only see the rude, condescending PA Jennifer DeGuzman once diagnosed. Dr. Park will help with the initial setup of establishing you as a patient but then you will never see her again. I requested to have at least an annual follow up with Dr. Park but was denied. I was a patient for a year, and decided I wasn't getting quality care from the PA. As a patient, you feel like Jennifer is just checking off boxes, and not actually seeing you as a person. She doesn't care about you as a human being. I was suffering depression after my aunt died, and was late/almost missed an appointment when Jennifer starts out the call with "You really need to work on being on time" and I couldn't even get a word in edgewise to say "my aunt literally just died". This is just one example of how she only saw me as how I affected her, her time, and her day, and had little concern for what I was experiencing or going through as a patient. Rudeness is only one factor. Being on controlled substances, there are insurance rules about how they are filled. Jennifer consistently filled my prescriptions incorrectly. It would cause continuous frustrations month after month. At times I would have to go without meds because it wasn't filled at the correct dosage and only was half a month's supply. At other times she would overfill my dosage to have more leeway in my fill time, but then lied to Dr. Park about why my dosage was higher and acted like I was dumb/confused/misunderstood. Finally, you can tell they don't care much when their patients depart. I canceled my last appointment and decided to leave. Somehow the gabapentin (a non-controlled substance) would still be filled for 3 months after I had left, even though I hadn't given them the updated bloodwork and hadn't met with them in 3 months. They just blatantly weren't paying attention and continued to fill Rx's for a patient they weren't actively seeing anymore. Quite frankly, I'm impressed patients stay. If you choose to go to Dr. Park for your sleep health needs, she will help you get a diagnosis. But beyond that, be prepared to deal with PA Jennifer Deguzman, who severely lacks bedside manner.

I took the day off of work and took him out of school for the day to attend this appointment. The address for Lurie Children's Hospital is 225 E. Chicago Ave. We parked in the hospital garage on Chicago Ave and the elevators down were to St. Clair, Huron or Superior Streets. We took the St. Clair elevator down and had no idea where Chicago Avenue was (it was our first time visiting the pulmonology dept). My four year old and I got lost in the Northwestern maze and ended up in the Galter Pavilion where the person at the information desk told us to enter Lurie's on Superior Street. She added that many people get confused with the Chicago Ave address and the parking garage exits. Because of this confusion we arrived at our appointment with Dr. Zak 20 minutes late. The nurse came out to tell us that Dr. Zak has a strict late policy and refused to see us. I explained what had happened, and asked to talk to Dr. Zak or even write her a note, but Dr. Zak refused to see us. Through her nurse she offered to write a "note" to our preschool on why our four year old missed the day. For a hospital that is so well respected and supposed to be so family friendly, our experience with Dr. Zak was horrendous. There was no empathy for why we were 5 minutes past their late policy, that we had waited to get into this appointment for months, that I took off work and that my son missed school to see this asthma doctor. It was a terrible and upsetting experience and I'd strongly advise not to see this doctor. When I called Patient Relations to discuss my complaint they apologized and said most doctors will still see the patient if there is a valid excuse for being late. The Pulmonary department at Lurie got the complaint and was quick to call me back and reschedule us for the following week which was much appreciated. They said clinics have the 15 minute late policy but after that it is up to the provider if they will see the patient. Not Dr. Zak--big thumbs down!
