My girlfriend is a creature of habit, and when it comes to BBQ, that habit is Mac's Speed Shop. I'd been to Midwood Smokehouse before, so on date night I convinced her to branch out and try the Ballantyne location. Yeah... probably shouldn't have done that. Nothing was bad, actually, everything was pretty good. The problem was that nothing really crossed over into great. We ordered the $46 Pig Out platter with four proteins, two sides, hushpuppies and pickles. We went with coleslaw and sweet potato fries, and apparently I was feeling particularly committed that night because I ate almost the entire thing myself. The brisket was good. The slaw was good. The sweet potato fries were good. The hushpuppies were good. See the pattern? For something called the Pig Out, I also found myself wishing the meat felt a little less like the precious commodity on the plate and, once again, the pulled pork mostly made me wish I had a pound of Lupita's sitting in front of me instead. Midwood Smokehouse isn't bad BBQ by any stretch. It just landed firmly in the "good" category for us when I was hoping for something memorable. Considering I used some relationship capital convincing her to abandon Mac's for the night, I don't think I'll be suggesting a return trip anytime soon. The food came out fast, but I didn't feel like it was hot hot. We ordered a combo platter with carolina chopped pork, 1/2 rack of ribs, and 2 orders of bbq brisket. The ribs were the best part, but even so it was just okay. The hush puppies were ok. Carolina chopped pork was a little salty for my liking. Brisket had nothing compared to the last brisket I had so I was kinda disappointed because I needed a knife to cut it. It was definitely enough food though for two people. Service was good though. We were originally sat at a table where you could feel the outside air every time it opened. They were kind to let us move. Anyways, those are my thoughts. I'd say it's a 3-4 star spot. read more

My best friend stumbled upon this BBQ spot in the Ballentyne area of Charlotte, NC. Great restaurant set up indoor and outdoor seating and nice sized bar area! Hostess very friendly and seated us right away. Our server was great he told us the Saturday Specials. We both had the small pulled pork plate with 1side and it comes with pickles and hush puppies. No complaints here. The place was packed and it's fully justified. There is plentiful seating and we didn't have to wait long for a table even though it was busy. I ordered the combo plate and got the hot barbecue sauce to go with it. Just know that you have to ask for this sauce as it's not provided by default. The ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender. The brisket had a nice smoked flavor to it. Everything to me tasted fresh and house made. Even the pickles and coleslaw tasted freshly made. The portions are ginormous. The service here was fast and friendly and the food was very good (but I'm not a BBQ aficionado). I had the brisket plate with beans as a side. It comes with a few hush-puppies and pickles. Although the brisket was very good, the beans were my favorite. I also had the Pecan cobbler for dessert. And, they have several local brews on tap. Here's the rundown: Beans- sweet, not too much, just right. With slivers of meat in every bite. Pickles- tart and tangy again, not too much, but enough to purse the lips mmmm. Hush puppies- mouth watering with a hint of sweetness. Brisket- The moist (or fatty) is moist and tender. Almost melts in your mouth. Has a lite salty taste but begs for sauce. The lean is more tougher as expected with less salty taste. House BBQ sauce- basic sweet and tangy great pairing with the brisket. Spicy Mustard - different for bbq, but a great change-up to traditional bbq sauce Spicy habanero sauce-thicker, bolder sauce with lingering heat. Delish! I've been to Franklin BBQ in Austin, TX (best in the country) and this place is pretty good. I had a sliced brisket sandwich and my son had the burnt ends plate. I took banana pudding to go. Everything was good. The only negative was the hush puppies were a little hard. Seemed overcooked. I'm from Louisiana and pretty sure I'm an expert in all things fried, especially southern and soul food. :D If you have family or friends in town that would like to try some of the best BBQ in Charlotte, this is it. Midwood definitely hit the bar. I started with the smoked wings- and they were fire. Great flavor and fall off the bone tenderness. I followed this up with the two meat plate featuring the Brisket and Burnt Ends. They offer options of cuts for the brisket which is a plus. You can get a lean cut, fat cut or mixed cut. I chose the mixed to sample both and was not disappointed. Burnt ends are always fantastic and not commonly sold at some of the other smokehouses. The greens were fantastic! Not my grandmas but a close second. I would come back and get the greens. Hush puppies were fantastic, they had an unexpected sweet taste that paired well with the smoked meats. Midwood Smokehouse is the spot for all things BBQ served in a family friendly casual enough environment. This reminds me a lot of Little Richards back home which feels like a warm hug for me! The pulled pork BBQ is packed with flavor here and I was impressed with the brisket as well. The meats are tender, juicy and don't really need a sauce but the sauces are good. I was craving a BBQ salad and the small size was plenty of food for dinner. I wish the salad came with some hushpuppies because at Little Richards, it does. I want to go back and try some more items. Update 9/14/24 Okay sometimes you just have an experience where you HAVE to do an update to your review. In my last review I said we'd be back and we have been. But today just left me speechless. She thinks there's nothing else in Ballantyne but Midwood so I roll with it. I don't eat meat so I don't expect much but today I saw the cheesesteak on the menu and thought, heck can't hurt to ask. I asked if they could swap out the brisket for chopped salmon. Not only did they accommodate my request but that thang was DELICIOUS!!! Moist, flavorful, well seasoned. I couldn't eat all of it. Paired with sweet potato fries I was in heaven. I've tried a few different things on the menu but THIS....now I'll be the one saying let's go to Ballantyne! My Mom eats slow so I had time to peep out the whole operation. Eva, the manager is doing an excellent job, it shows. The customer service, top notch all the way around. No one ever stood around as if they had nothing to do. Very clean restaurant. I frequently saw someone with spray bottles. Michael was our server and was so friendly, professional and accommodating. Even the bathrooms are clean. No baby changing station but plenty of clean stalls for women. Overall amazing experience and I didn't think it could get better. Proved me wrong. I remember liking their Brisket Sandwich on my last visit, so stopped in again to repeat the experience... Well, for some reason, it didn't taste the same. I loved how they buttered the Texas-style bread this time (per request), but the brisket just didn't taste too good this time. It had this bitter taste to it! Guess it was too much of the red onions?? Also, their Mac & Cheese was just OK at most...as it didn't taste too freshly made. Possibly reheated? This restaurant really did a great job ramping up the All-American motif...complemented by old-school Rock and Country overhead music. Despite all of their strengths, I just can't rate higher than 3 stars for this latest visit due to how ridiculously bitter this brisket tasted. It was nearly odd. We were in the area and decided to stop by. I've heard really good things about this chain and a wanted to try it for myself. We were seated right away, the place was not too busy. Our server took our order, I ordered the well fed with a choice of 4 proteins (half ribs, double brisket, burnt ends) the sides (Mac n cheese, baked beans) 5/10 - The ribs I did ask for them to not be sauced but they were TOUGH.. I did not enjoy them at all, the burnt ends and brisket were okay. The Mac n cheese was so chewy and hard I had to ask if I could replace it with another side and got coleslaw - I should have ordered another side of baked beans instead because they were really good it also came with hushpuppies and pickles. My son ordered the chicken tenders off the kids menu 3/10 - He complained about how the tenders were hurting his teeth and mouth as he was eating. They were fried so hard which made them rock hard... He literally sat there and pealed the crust off in order to enjoy them.. I hated that. Along with his tenders he ordered fresh fruit - The fruit did look fresh and he enjoyed them. What I thought was so weird is not to long after we were served our food our server brought out my check. I made a comment that I wasn't ready for the check yet because we were going to order dessert.... I ordered a small banana pudding and my son wanted ice cream but they only had vanilla flavored ice cream, no chocolate. So, he opted to just have some of my pudding. But what a bummer, the menu should def specify that they only offer vanilla ice cream so the kids know ahead of time. Wasn't really in the mood for 'cue, but I walk past the new Midwood Smokehouse restaurant in the Charlotte airport, and it does look good. But I'm not given to paying the extortionate prices airport restaurants charge and I ran across their location near the South Park area so I thought I'd try it. Got the burnt ends, not my normal BBQ order and dang they're good. Meaty, well cooked and mostlykind of melt-in-your-mouth beefy goodness. They come with a cola BBQ sauce which is good but ask for the spicy habanero, whole 'nother level trust me They need to put their "house made" pickles in a dish and serve them up with a meal instead of the miserly portion they supply because they are really quite excellent and a nice counterpoint to the BBQ flavors. The barbeque baked beans were good but not spectacular, and my hush puppies were stone cold but not a dealbreaker with all the rest of the good food (I'd take a serving of the pickles over the hush puppies anyday) Finish up with their far better than average banana pudding. Enjoyed a really delicious lunch here. I ordered a pork plate which came with a few hush puppies, cucumber salad, and I chose the baked beans side. The baked beans had a chili flavor and were unlike any baked beans I've had before, but I really enjoyed them. The pulled pork serving was generous, and I asked for a few of the sauces so I could try each one. Service was fantastic, we were seated right away, our waitress checked on us frequently and refilled our sweet teas often, and our food came out super quick. Let me tell you, those ribs literally fell off the bone always a good sign when you are eating BBQ. The brisket was good we got a good mix of marble and dry meat. Markel didnt call it dry it was called a different cut of meat that I can't remember. Now I know I like the marble cut of brisket - so juicy and flavorful. I wasn't a fan the pork it was dry. The collard greens were decent and the mac and cheese was just okay. Its not your grandma's mac and cheese and my friend said I should have know that from the shells LOL. The baked beans were chewy there is a lot more meat in them than actual beans. The coleslaw was okay, I'm not really a fan and you can't mess up buttered broccoli. The pickle garnish was yummy as well and last but definitely not least the hushpuppies were good. This place was very yummy and I would definitely come back. Came here to say that my boyfriend and I have been here several times, and while the food is always great, our server Ronnie was absolutely exceptional!! He was so attentive to us, nice, and very accommodating. I was looking to add a lot of spice to our appetizer and my entree due to being 9 months pregnant, and he did such a great job of bringing out extra spicy sauces for us to try for the nachos and brisket, as well as bagged everything up for us to go at the end. We have been disappointed the last two times we dined at this Midwood location. The service was good, but two different food items were not good at all. We had to send back dry and very overcooked ribs perviously. Today, the chopped brisket sandwichs we ordered were so burned tasting and over-salted that we only ate a few bites. The French fries side were below "average"... not what you'd expect from this restaurant. The server saw that we barely touched our food and offered to replace... but by then we had lost our appetites. UPDATE: Contacted by Midwood management to understand the problem.
