First of all A 4 star rating is a high recommendation. I don't give many 5 stars, because everything needs to be exceptional. Today is one if the rate occasions I will give a 5 star review. We were downtown at at the Edgar Allan Poe Speakeasy presentation, which was amazing by itself. We were looking for a place to eat nearby and Yelp gave Miel De Agave very good reviews. My girlfriend had tried to come here for a birthday celebration in the past but it was too busy. (Reservation highly recommended Friday and Saturday) but today being Sunday we took a chance. We were a little early arriving just after 4. We were greeted immediately. There were only a few tables taken and seated by the stage. (Live saxophone player started at 6 and we were glad we were still here). Our server Marcia was amazing. Very pleasant smile brought us menus and explained everything. She took our drink orders and put in our appetizer while we browsed the menu. We decided on the green chili creamy enchiladas with chicken and I chose the Ribeye Del A Casa. The drinks were ordered were the Conejo Malo and the Me Quiere o no me Quiere. They both had a great presentation and both were sweet but delicious. The enchilads were flavorful and good size portion. The ribeye however, was among the top steaks I ever had. The meat was juicy and cooked exactly as ordered. The quesadillas were good and the sauces amazing. Highly recommend. We were to full to finish but Marcia brought us a complementary slice of cheesecake. What a great surprise. It was not a standard cheese cake. It had a creme brulee top and was deliciously sweet. Marcia decorates them and needless to say I was impressed. After finishing a great meal, we were getting ready to leave when the saxophone player was setting up. He started at 6 and played some smooth sounds. Glad we stayed. So this was a same day decision for this place. We were able to get a reservation online quickly since I had a friend visiting from out of town. When we walked in it's super aesthetic and we were seated promptly. After about 10-15 minutes of sitting there, someone came up to us and asked if we have been helped. We told them not yet and they looked confused and said "ok I can take you" The ambiance was nice with a live sax player. Luckily we weren't in a rush so we just thought, maybe they are busy. We started with apps and the elote was great! The civiche was good but different. The presentation kinda reminded me of an old school chain Mexican place but good flavor. When the main meals came, it was weird that they served them almost staggered and my wife's tacos took the longest (which was weird) now this is the part that really left me like HUH!? Well my friend and I both ordered the medium rare ribeye. His was cooked great... mine was over cooked with not even a hint of pink let alone red... I hated to do it but paying 65 bucks I expected it to be cooked properly. So I told the waiter that and he agreed and apologized. Ive worked in service and understand shit happens.... After about 15 more minutes the steak come out again, at this point everyone else is almost done with their food. They placed the steak down and I started opening it up and come to find that it's raw lollll... so now I'm convinced they don't actually have a chef in the back who knows how to grill. I have traveled the world specifically for steak so I am very familiar with how steak should be cooked and this was not it. The fact that they couldn't get the same cookedness like is concerning especially since this is one of their "house specialities" My wife liked her carne asada tacos though. The only reason I'm not giving this place 1-2 stars is the server felt so bad because he saw how bad it was and start just bringing out a bunch of deserts. Which the cookie was the best, the other ones tasted like they were frozen and maybe bought. Didn't have a fresh taste to them. They didn't have a Gluten Free menu or list items as GF on their menu but the server asked the chef if the Enchiladas in verde sauce were GF and he said yes. Food came within 8 minutes of ordering. Portion size (3 enchiladas) and a small amount of arugula salad all squeezed into a 8" circular dish. It would've been a better presentation on a larger oval plate as well as easier to cut and eat. The verde salsa was NOT what I, or anyone wanting traditional Mexican food, would expect. It was more of an off-white creamy gravy slathered all over my poor defenseless enchiladas. The gravy made me nervous - about what it had been thickened with and was it really Gluten Free?!? I had the server ask the chef again - is this a GF dish? I was told it was GF bc he uses cottage cheese and corn starch to make the gravy. I guess I'll see later on tonight. The asada used was on the lower grade of meat. The gravy was really just too much - not what I was expecting at all. It would have been nice to get what I ordered - instead of this 'creation' from the kitchen. Complimentary chips and salsa - Notta!! For a $26 dish, I would expect more food, a better and more authentic Mexican presentation and free chips while I waited for my dish. The four of us enjoyed the pork belly chicharone-crispy yet tender and succulent cubes of deliciousness, served with a guacamole cream; the ribeye aguachile was fantastic with sliced medium rare ribeye dressed with a light salsa. Three diners enjoyed the queso birria tacos-corn tortillas stuffed with unctuous beef and a cheese melted and crispy. The tacos were served with consommé and a fiery salsa for dipping. The green chile enchiladas got a thumbs up from fourth diner. Great cocktail menu as well as a nice selection of beers on tap and bottled. Service was attentive and accommodating. However mind you we were told we had to wait in that line . They turned us away. The hostess was so rude and off putting. Said "we have a grace period for a reason" and now it's an hour wait. Even after explaining we have been present this whole time . Made the reservation for my anniversary and I will never be returning I can promise that. Great birria tacos! Perfect to even split with someone if you're not too hungry. The music was great at this restaurant and was very packed for 7:30 on a Wednesday night. The waiter didn't check on us a lot since we only got one item. But they were friendly. We didn't try the drinks due to dry January but looking at other tables, the higher priced drinks are definitely cool. But you're paying for the show of it.
