I had a fantastic experience ordering from here on the phone! I spoke with Aaron (sorry if I misspelled that) and he was extremely nice and made sure my order was correct. I ordered the Rainbow Roll and California Roll with no cucumber but I wanted to add Masago and he was great about it! The sushi was amazing and tasted very fresh. This place is pretty good - they have good sushi, other nice treats (i.e., non-sushi items), and a decent list of sakis. It smells a little too much like fish upon entry, however, after a little while you don't notice anymore. The other issue is price - it's a bit pricey. A couple sakis, dinner, and you're out at least $100 for 2 people. For this place, I feel like it's just a little too expensive... Service is a bit slow, and the place tends to be un-crowded, which makes me sad since I love people-watching in Austin so much. I'd really rather eat at Mushashino if I'm going to spend this much. A few months ago, when I moved to Austin from San Francisco, I knew I'd find amazing Tex-Mex and BBQ. But sushi? I had no idea what to expect. After trying a few local joints, I was starting to lose hope, until I found Mikado. This place is absolutely wonderful! FOOD: My go-to favorite nigiri has also been the mackerel. While it's definitely awesome, I found a new favorite in the super white tuna. It's fresh and buttery which makes it wonderful on it's own, then the small pieces of browned garlic on top put it into a whole other level. For rolls, my favorite is Chorishis Fire. SETTING: Mikado also has some of the best ambiance of any restaurant I've ever been to. Ever. It's decor is warm yet modern, lights are dim, and the music is modern yet chill. This is an excellent place for date night, or out with a group of friends. Though I've seen some children here, they were mostly older kids. I'm not sure if this is the place for young (and frequently loud/disruptive) children. SERVICE: The service has always been great as well. The servers and hosts/hostess are attentive and accommodating. During my most recent visit with my boyfriend, we were given complimentary miso soup, unsolicited, while we waited for our rolls, because we had "waited a while" (I use quotes, because it honestly didn't seem that long to me, I'm used to having a wait when it comes to sushi). I'm sure the cost to the restaurant was very low, but the gesture was more than appreciated by us. It made us feel very welcomed and taken care of. read more

I went to Mikado with a group of four to celebrate a coworkers birthday. Most of the rolls were really good. I was particularly impressed with the tempura shrimp roll, the salty dog I think it was called? Reeeally tasty. The special of the day was salmon sushi, but it was much prettier than it was tasty. The sushi here is AMAZING. My favorite was the Austin roll, which was a riceless roll with avocado and sashimi wrapped in cucumber. The prices aren't bad for dinner but it isn't cheap either, it was around $12-15 per roll. This would be a great place for a dinner date because it's pretty quiet and you don't have to yell to be heard. It's very dark inside though and I wish they could make it a little brighter so that you could see the beautiful sushi roll presentation more clearly. We came here for a late dinner, and our server Keith was very nice and didn't rush us even though we stayed past their closing time. read more

I've been here 5 times now in 2 months - Crazy stuff. I took my parents here yesterday to finally get a taste of the good ish. MAN - what a blast we had. Plus Mikado has all day Happy Hour on Sundays! Great prices and even more incredible food. Every single piece of nigiri we ordered was fresh and the cuts were VERY generous. On top of that we ordered (my favorite) the Fiery Kiss roll and a Hot Susan, the Beef Temayagiwagawagi (I can't remember how to spell it I just know it was freaking faaaabulous), the crab puffs (very different - light and crispy), the fried oysters (amazing!), and a bunch of other things. This is my new favorite sushi restaurant. We came in and they were pretty packed, so we did have to wait a while for a table. When we did get sat, the girl that sat us was really funny and chill. Our server came around and he was really knowledgeable about the sushi. He said that he hadn't been working there for long, so it surprised me that he knew so much but he said he used to manage another sushi restaurant. Despite the restaurant being pretty busy, he made a lot of time for our table and we ended up learning a lot about him, which is what I thing really set apart this restaurant and this experience from any other place. In addition, we ordered the cooked things off of the menu, like this sushi roll they wrap in aluminum foil and set on fire, and the Love Boat for two. All of their sashimi was really fresh and I found a new favorite fish since the Love Boat sashimi and nigiri is all chef's choice. read more

Stopped by for their all day Sunday HH. First off, they have 22oz draft Sculpin IPA for $6 so they were already winning in my book. We requested a specific table and at least a few staff came by to make sure we had been helped. More points for attentive and friendly staff. We tried the spicy garlic edamame, chicken katsu and stuffed jalapeños for appetizers. All of them were delicious and our two favorites were the jalapeños and edamame. Then we tried the crunchy roll and Mikado roll. Both of those were very good as well although the winner was clearly the Mikado roll. Pretty good place tbh. Came during reverse HH, (9-10:15pm) on a Friday night, no wait, just sat down. Owner was very welcoming and the waiters were nice too. Water was kept up really well (they have all waiters attend to you I believe). Pretty casual place and atmosphere. Food itself was quite good. We ordered the katsu, rolls, and some nigiri. Nigiri slice sizes were quite good, and the quality was worth it for the price. Not top quality, but not the ones you would find at a crappy sushi place either. All in all, worth. Also, for authenticity's sake, they add the little piece of wasabi between their rice and fish for their nigiri, so be wary of that when ordering off the nigiri menu. All in all a pretty solid place. Only spent about $40 with tip for 2 people. Solid prices for a solid dinner. However, nothing stood out as amazing, per se. 8.5/10, will definitely come again. read more

Space is clean and modern but not stark. A space you could hang out in for a long time. Climate control at the right level. Good, mod music at a decent level. So many places that have music play ancient stuff from the late 1900's so it's good to hear new artists, etc. Lots of big, wide booths and half booths to sink into and get your fresh fish, eel, etc. on. Came here yesterday for an early dinner, and I don't understand why it was so empty! The all-day Happy Hour on Sundays is such a great thing, and I don't know why people aren't taking advantage of it more. We started off with the karaage, which I found to be by far the most underwhelming thing. I am used to karaage having a crunchier breading, and for it to be served with some Japanese mayo but the karaage here has a light bread crumb coating and the meat I found to be a bit chewy, but the overall flavor was good nonetheless. Fried chicken is still fried chicken! The sushi on the other hand FAR surpassed my expectations! We got several different orders of nigiri and ordered 3 rolls. The nigiri was SO amazingly fresh and all the fish was so lovely and buttery. The flavors were great and the Happy Hour price made that quality an absolute steal!! I remember starting off with 1 salmon nigiri and being BLOWN AWAY by how buttery and smooth the fish was. That also goes for every other fish I had! My brother tried eel for the first time, and he is now a huge fan! I'm still dreaming about more yellowtail and escolar. The rolls were also amazing and SUCH a great price because the rolls are very sizable. You can tell that the sushi chefs know what they're doing because the presentation of both the nigiri and rolls was immaculate. My brother and his friend absolutely love the Mikado roll, and I found the fried aspect of it to be a fun change in texture. The other 2 rolls we opted for were the Rainbow Roll and the Chorishi's Fire. Both excellent! A little tip is that while they don't have a dessert menu, you should definitely ask your waiter or waitress because we got the tempura ice cream and while it is quite simple, it really hit the spot. The only thing we could've hoped for was more strawberry but delicious nonetheless. All in all, I cannot wait to come back to Mikado again soon!! read more

First, it's worth noting that we have never dined at the restaurant itself, but have ordered takeout through Amazon and Doordash frequently over the last couple years. It's my go-to takeout sushi option, because it is reliably fresh, tasty sushi without breaking the bank. Even though the sushi is arriving to us in to-go containers, it always arrives looking well plated and well made, something I know not to take for granted with deliveries. Some of my favorite rolls include the Crouching Tiger roll, the Fiery Kiss roll, and the Austin roll. We tend to most enjoy the rolls without a spicy mayo topping, and we simply request it be left off some rolls, which has never been a problem. I would definitely recommend Mikado Ryotei for delivery, and we'll probably have to stop by in person sometime soon. read more

It's fresh, the rice cooked just right, it didn't taste like it has been refrigerated for a couple of hours. The shrimp tempura itself was yummy but a little bit on the oily side. The only flop was the fried eggroll, with some bean thread noodles inside. The noodles got fried too much and it was too tough to eat. I did not finish it. My companion ordered the Chef Sushi. Boyfriend and I came here for our one year anniversary. Not sure what it looks like in the day, but because it was dinner, the atmosphere was very romantic. Lots of customers; almost every table and booth was filled. But it was still quiet enough to have a good conversation. Service however, was very slow. We saw our waitress about twice the whole night. Other waiters/waitresses had to help us. Food was amazing. We got the Crab puffs, Sing Maki, Chorishi's Fire, and Tempura Icecream. Crab puff was actually puffy and not flat fried stuff that other places tend to serve. Chorishi's Fire had a good combination of fried-ness and raw-ness which was good. Sing Maki was our favorite. It was the most "special" roll I've ever tried. Nothing actually wrapped the rolls. No sesame paper. No rice. No nothing. But it all stayed intact. and it was delicous. Tempura Icecream was alright. Have always spotted this place while driving on hwy 183 but never bothered to stop by because I thought it was some sellout gourmet sushi-wanna be.... well, I wasn't completely wrong. We had the Chorishi's FIre and Hottie Susan rolls, turns out they both uses the same spicy mayo sauce. The sushi themselves were both kind of bland, with not a whole lot of flavor. The sauce had heat, but not much else. Also tried the peppered calamari appetizer, which was basically deep fried battered calamari. It wasn't bad overall, but the batter reminded me of your generic general tsao takeout, and it was too much batter that I didn't taste the squid much. The tempura ice cream was probably the best thing we had, the batter was just right, not too thick or too soggy. Overall, it's got a nice atmosphere and service, probably a good spot for a business dinner or to take someone out... but for the price and flavor of the sushi, there's plenty of better sushi places in Austin. read more

Visited with the family on Sunday evening and was surprised it provided Happy Hour all day on Sunday...always been a solid sushi and sashimi choice - especially for Fatty Salmon - and again last evening it was solid. Wow this was good! As soon as I walked out of the door, I began to think of an excuse to come back. This place has been here almost a decade. I'm brand new to Austin and have only tried three sushi places here. The quality of the food here was the best of the three. I ordered the 10 piece chef's choice sashimi, one unagi (eel -cooked) and a crab stick. This wasn't just plain sashimi. It had a light hint of different seasonings still allowed to fish to be the star of the show. The white tuna was very lightly dusted with tiny pieces of roasted garlic which was light enough to give the fish a bit of a kick, but not overpowering by any means. I'm not certain what the red-snapper was wrapped around, but it was delicious. The quality of all the meat was better than most places. It didn't even have a hint of "fishiness." I have to give special credit to the chef for the unagi; if you're a fan, this place does it right. It can be very hit and miss and I'm often disappointed by the flavor, the texture, or both; not tonight! The presentation was excellent and the service was very good as well. When I told the chef that I took a photo of my dish and posted it online, he later surprised me with a seared ahi dish that was not on the menu. Perfectly seared and peppered slices, of rare ahi sat atop julienned cucumbers and slivers of fresh crab meat with a drizzle or a rich, bright cream sauce. I want to give this place five stars, but I'm going to have to try it a few more times. All I've had is sashimi; I'd like to try a couple rolls and a few menu items. If it's consistently this good, then it could be a five star sushi place. Regardless, it's still a great four star sushi place that deserves a special trip. read more

First time here for happy hour today. Christy, our server, was friendly and recommended a couple rolls that we took her up on. Ordered the spicy garlic edamame (a must if you like that fire!), shrimp tempura, the tiger roll and the Chorishi's Fire. Everything was on point! I would order this exact same thing again.
