I gotta say the tastiest brisket I've had in a long time! But was gonna turn and walk away, reason: the cashier help. What i had traveled for wasn't being served at the moment, and wasn't nicely or even given a suggestion to the other delicious options. A nice man approached as i was gonna leave and gave me a suggestion on a meal with estimated price. And was a wonderful price for an awesome meal! OG setup just like the original.....not quite as rustic but the food tastes and is served the same. My only complaint is I did not hear "Waltz Across Texas" when I walked through the door! The new joint has a carryout section, dining room, and they accept plastico, including los AMEX. Stop by and gittya some of this South Texas tradition. read more

So glad to have found this place it doesn't have the old tar paper shack ambiance of the old location, but the food and the servers make you feel right at home. I had the brisket and jalapeño sausage. It was just like I remember, flavorful and abundant. I couldn't finish everything. I couldn't have asked for any better or different. Huge let down everything from the meat to the bread was no good. The price was ridiculous for the quality and the bbq sauce was like salsa. Never again will I eat there. I suggest the short drive down the road to Sams bbq read more

I also ate at the original Joe Cotten growing up and was very disappointed with the newly opened one. My friend had the small ribs that were really salty and I mean really salty. Had I tasted them at the being of the meal I would have encouraged him to send them back. The ribs were also the end ribs so he didn't get much meat for the price. Living in central Texas for long time, I've had the pleasure of sampling the FINEST BBQ around. You can imagine my disappointment when I moved to Corpus to fin Cotton's mediocre BBQ. The BBQ sauce is soupy with lots of tomato chunks. The brisket is ALWAYS 60% fat at least. I have given this place 5 chances and I've determined that the only thing on the menu worth the 2 stars is the great service. read more

I don't think it's THAT different from the original. Staff is still friendly and highly attentive and friendly to the customer. A few things are different like the old Cottens used to bring free seconds if you were still hungry. Although I must say I've always gotten full off the first serving here and never needed another serving. The cheese spread is the same, brisket and sausage still have the same great taste. Also, the owner (and manager) frequently goes table to table greeting the customers and making sure the customer is having a great dining experience. I don't know anywhere else that has the owner on the ground level helping out customers. I think this is a great establishment! read more

Stopped in just before the lunch crowd; this place gets very crowded and loud. Upon being seated, you're given is odd cheese spread with crackers. The server kept trying to push additional menu items on us despite being told "No, we're fine." The proteins were all cooked well and seasoned properly. I don't know if they make their sausage in house but it had good flavor and was unfamiliar. The pecan pie was pecan pie, nothing special. Prices could have been a bit lower relative to portion size but I'd definitely go back for the BBQ. read more

1 star bc the BBQ is good, but the restaurants presentation is poor. The cleanliness of the restaurant is questionable, floors are never cleaned, woman's bathrooms are in bad shape, not only very dirty but literally have holes and duct tape on the walls. Makes you wonder about the things we aren't able to see..Although the food is good I feel guilty eating here with my family bc the place seems so unclean, unkept and staff, mgt. don't seem to care. Can't take a chance at a dirty restaurant especially when they handle raw meat! read more

Not bad, but portions could be a little larger. Weird location for this place, we were big fan's of the original Cotton's BBQ. Overall, we would eat here again, this is an above average BBQ place which is unusual. read more

Well, when (Mike) Cottens first opened, the food was pretty close to the original Joe Cottens which we've been patrons of for at least 50 years but in the past few months, it has been sliding down hill quickly in its quality. The service has always been good except for visit before last when we waited 20 minutes for an extra slice of brisket and a link of sausage at our table. Bald manager we spoke to said they were short handed and meat cutters were new. Really??!! Well Joe Cotten would have been back in the kitchen raising a ruckus and getting things moving and Cecil Cotten would have rolled up his sleeves and started cutting meat himself! Poor management here now and new owners never present; can't run a restaurant that way! The quality of food is inconsistent and has deteriorated. We ate at 5:15pm last visit on a Wednesday and they had no stringy brisket, only lean. The BBQ sauce and pinto beans have gotten way too spicy hot and the last serving of sausage was too spicy and just gross. I wish I had taken a picture of the brisket we got last time. It looked raw from all the red dye throughout that they put in it to try to make it look "smoked" and it didn't have that characteristic smoked flavor either; rather bland. You can't cut corners. We were very disappointed and after several bad visits here, we're sorry to say that we'll get our BBQ somewhere else. Howard's, Mr. G's, and Rudy's here we come. Now if Cecil reopens a Cottens, we will certainly visit his restaurant because we know he will make sure the quality is top notch. read more

I have read several reviews with references to the family tradition of Cotton's bar-b-q. After having eaten at Cotton's for 30 years I will say that there is no resemblance between Mike Cotton's and Cotton's. Our food was served at room temp. The potato salad was just tasteless. But the reason for one star is dirty ladies bathroom with a deteriorating framed piece of junk sitting on the faucet handles of the dirty sink. Dirty, trashy floors in the dining room. I had eaten here one time before after this store opened and spoke directly to Mike Cotton about the dirty bathroom and evidentially it is not important to him. It is important to me because I have been told you can get a good idea of the cleanliness of the kitchen by the cleanliness of the bathrooms. The bathrooms at Cotton's on Hwy 77 were kept spotless and if they weren't they were cleaned immediately upon reporting a mess. So, in my opinion this store has no resemblance to the family tradition. read more

The bar BQ is very good here. The bar BQ sausage doesn't taste like the old Joe Cotten's bar BQ but it's still good. Brisket is tender and moist. Ribs are not the best but they do pass the grade. Price is reasonable. Overall it's good bar BQ! read more

I guess how the food turns out is dependent on what day you show up. I'll try to calculate the days good reviews were written and only go then. I've been to the old Cotten's (excellent) and this new one (not excellent at all). I'm not a big complainer and usually my wife has to force my hand to send food back. We ended up sending back an entire table's worth (two adults, three children) not once, but twice. It just kept coming out cold. There's one thing you can't do with BBQ and that's serve it cold or undercooked. To top it off, the assumed manager was rude as can be to his wait staff, who were kind and helpful as could be. I gave our waiter a really good tip and left a note for the manager to attend a couple of courses on how to manage employees. If I had the money, I'd buy this place in a heartbeat before it's great local reputation is ruined by the current ownership. I have friends and family who grew up going to the old Cotten's and they're sentiments are the same: this new Cotten's is no bueno. read more

We stopped here on the way to Padre from Austin. There were 12 of us and everyone loved their food, including picky kids. The service was excellent, organized for a large party, and fast. We will definitely stop here again on our next trip! The smoked chicken was excellent. And the bbq sauce was very good - very unique. read more

I'm trying to understand who wrote these positive reviews. I ordered brisket, sausage, ribs, ham, and sides. Except for the sausage(really delicious), the food was terrible. The brisket was sliced by a 3rd grader. The flavor was horrible and the brisket was dry. Ribs were charred. Ham was nothing special. The beans tasted like old burnt coffee. Potato salad had a spoiled odor. I really wish I could get my $100 back and give it to a local charity. I definitely would not recommend this place. read more
