First time ever making this stop on the drive from San Diego to Tucson. This quaint little coffee shop looks like it is in the tiniest, German-looking village ever. Ordered a delicious , iced cinnamon miel latte and a vegan wrap for lunch. You walk up and order then can seat yourself on their lovely patio which has umbrella-ed tables and lots of plants. When your order is ready, they call you and your order will be sitting on the ledge of a Dutch door. My wrap was just fine, a little chintzy on the alfalfa sprouts but then we are in the middle of a recall of them. But the vinaigrette that was served with it for dipping was amazing, some kind of cilantro or sweet green goddess type of concoction. Yawl should bottle that stuff. The order taker/cashier dude was new and was getting the hang of the menu and wasn't able to answer my question about what was in a Hammerhead Latte, but his answer of extra espresso shots made sense. Following a quick 'WiFi+Coffee' search in the Alpine area, The Well Cafe popped up - so off I went. Formerly a tea house where a rare customer was seen, I popped into the rear parking lot to finish a business call before heading in and setting up shop for the morning. I was surprised to see the amount of traffic in and out of the parking lot, and the swiftness that everyone departed with their drinks after having just arrived. I completed my call and popped inside. The service was fast, accurate, and the staff were friendly and unrushed. Initially only seeing the indoor seating, I was surprised to learn that after you head down the stairs to order, there is a door heading to a beautiful quaint, but large enough outdoor patio. About ten tables dot the patio, nestled between raised garden beds filled with spider plants, flowers, and succulents. Trees provide necessary shade without completely turning off the sun, while the conversations provide a buzz to the shop without having to be careful that you are speaking too loud that another table will hear. I ordered a Well Cafe Panini, sourdough, chicken, ham, cheese, and 'Well Sauce'. All of which made for a mouth watering brunch. A slice of orange on the side brought the extra little touch to your meal reminding you this small business cares about it's customers and goes the extra mile for the smallest of smiles. While working in the patio, I made phone calls, connected to the internet, charged my devices, all seamlessly, with privacy, and without worry that my voice would travel and interupt those around me enjoying their favorite dish. As a matter of fact, it seems as though this is becoming a popular hangout for studying students and remote workers alike. Several parties arrived, enjoyed their time and left within reason, while others arrived, dug in, and enjoyed a long morning in the beautiful Alpine weather. I will certainly be back. read more

Such a fun little place! You'll feel like you're walking around a little village in the Alps! The coffee was great, a Large drip was $3.50 and Ms Badpenny had an iced coffee. I asked for no peanut butter on a açai bowl, Someone took my phone order wrong and added a peanut butter to my order on my açai, When I arrived to pick it up, it was obvious they had it ready with peanut butter already on it. But instead of making me a new açai bowl, they just scooped off the peanut butter., leaving quite a bit behind on the sides. For someone with peanut allergies, this is completely unacceptable and lazy., and it's too expensive to justify throwing it away. read more

It's giving country cozy, friendly, smooth roasted coffee and specials. The cutest country coffee roaster I've been in all year. I love the whole lay out. It's like entering a family or friends home. Understaffed and very slow service. Should not take 15 minutes for 1 drink, no food items or nothing. They need a better system where some focus on food and others just drinks. Also noticed they don't provide black coffee refills to guests that were dining in and enjoying food items. Seems kinda simple and not needed to charge $4 for a refill of black coffee. I was into the establishment at 12:29P this past Wednesday. Ordered a small coffee. I asked what my choices were for drip java, and clerk said "medium or dark roast". I asked for dark. When the coffee came, with the half & half I asked for, the cup felt barely warm. I sipped the coffee and it was not hot, maybe just warm. I stood back in line and the same "barista" (heavier set younger woman) who had originated my order and retrieved my drip coffee drink, came to counter and I said my coffee was not hot (nicely) and asked if I could have the medium roast as it may be fresher (and hotter). The barista said the coffees had been there for a while but she'd microwave my coffee. She microwaved it, I got the coffee and said to her looking her in the eyes "thank you much!" and she did not ever give eye contact, then replied "yeah". Who says "yeah" when they are thanked for an order they did not serve properly. No "I'm sorry" or proper resolution to luke warm old coffee. What was amazing was she nor the other employees standing who were drawn to the attention when I mentioned my coffee was not hot (again, very kindly to them), that none of them offered me a pour over, or to brew a new batch. The coffee once microwaved still was not hot, and it tasted old. More amazing is that there were four (4) females behind the counter working (visiting with one another), with one customer inside, and two customers on the patio. It gets better, I believe the owner/manager was behind the counter too, carrying some kind of file folders on a cart, and appearing managerial. If you are going to operate a coffeehouse, and sell me coffee, you need to get those basics down. The women employees were more interested in talking to each other and bantering, than good customer care. My last visit there was 2 weeks ago, and when I went to fix up my coffee their condiments table was out of stir sticks, and their fresh water decanter was empty. I assume on my visit this week, the employees just did not want to brew a fresh batch of coffee since their goals must have been to close early, and fixate on Thanksgiving. I realize every business can have a bad day or not get it all right 100% of the time. Think Starbucks and how often they get it right with millions of customers in volume. Then this small coffeehouse in Alpine, fails at the various touch points in transaction. The key is service recovery when something fails, and in these moments of truth on Wednesday, they got everything wrong on the simple stuff, and could not even accommodate me (even though I also tipped the lady $1 on a $2.95 coffee). When a wonderful husband and wife team bring world class coffee to your sleepy East County town... BAM! There's some solid places around but none that pull it all together like TWC. My wife is addicted to the acai bowl. Seriously, is there a 12-step program for this? I've been and talked to other customers who concur. For me, I go with an Americano and some yummy steel cut oatmeal. There's an awesome patio to sit outside and cozy inside seatings for like the 10 days it rains a year here. We bring our dogs and it is a fantastic place to just sit, get some work done or have a conversation. The coffee is second to none in San Diego. I am a home roaster and chatted with the owner about his process and how he got here. They are fantastic people that not only run a small business but serve our community in so many other ways. What a great little gem in the heart of town! I have driven by this place dozens of times but for one reason or another I haven't stopped in. Today I wanted an açaí bowl and remembered seeing their sign and decided to give it a try. From the outside it looks like it's super tiny but it's not. They have done an excellent job utilizing the space and there is so much inside! There is some seating inside but they also have a cute patio outside in the back that seats so many more! I love the decor and all of the staff I interacted with were very friendly. They have a great menu with both breakfast and lunch options as well as lots of coffee, tea and smoothies too! I ordered an açaí bowl and a blueberry muffin. The açaí was nicely frozen (not melty like I've gotten elsewhere). It was topped with yummy granola and very fresh fruit. Yum!
