Requested service from Mike. He started by saying he was too busy with jobs unless he could just stop by anytime. I agreed to leave my gate open if they just let me know the day they'd be there. Then his next issue was I was going through my home warranty for the repair. At this point he said he had "zero interest" in my job. I told him that I would be paying him directly and I would deal with my warranty company to get reimbursed, I just needed an estimate from him. He still said no and then his next issue was our heater was too old, probably going to be "too much of a headache". Uh, gee of course it's older, that's probably why it broke down and needs repair. I would imagine new heaters generally don't need repair, but I guess logic and Mike the Poolman don't mix. I found another Company that came out the same day and determined it was unrepairable as the part needed wasn't available anymore. So, guess what? My warranty company authorized a brand new installation of a replacement as the old one is unrepairable. Mike just walked away from a new heater installation job that was no issue or problem for me to get approved. I'll be getting a brand new Jandy heater installed. I would recommend you keep scrolling past this guy. You'll probably be "too much of a headache" for him also, don't waste your time. read more

I had a poor experience with Mike The Poolman. They are not set up for automatic credit card payments. We were late mailing our check for last month due to international travel, but we mailed the check immediately upon return (and Mike was informed about our trip ahead of time). As soon as our check was cleared, I got an email from Mike saying he was canceling our service without giving any reason for the cancellation. Even when Mike visited to provide us with an estimate, he came across as borderline rude and arrogant, but I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt owing to the good reviews he has. We needed a handrail for our pool. There are not very companies that seek and install pool handrails. I contacted Mike and he replied right away with information and an estimate. I purchased a handrail and it was ordered with a deposit. Mike contacted me in a couple of weeks to let me know the handrail was received and set up an appointment for the installation. Everyone seems to like these guys, yet my experience was not so likeable ... Monthly Charge for 'full service' ($125.00/mo) is HIGH. Mike doesn't service the pools - Chris does. Chris is VERY nice, but he's not the 'boss man'. The boss man says they will do this and that; ACTUALLY he won't do much @ all. HE REFUSED TO WORK ON MY POOL EQUIPMENT 'because he does not LIKE the equipment'. He told me to 'TAKE YOUR POOL FILTER TO LESLIE'S'. Yeah, right. I hired this company to service my pool. First I met Mike made me feel I can trust him with my pool. Less than a year my pool got all kind of stains on the walls. I asked him to stop by but he never showed up. He made me pay extra for chemicals he said will prevent the stains but I think it was just taking the money or whatever he said he added did not do anything or was not ever put in. Mike recommended again that I spend a little more money and replace my 125v single speed pump with a new energy efficient 230v variable speed pump. Let me begin with how I searched for a pool specialist- google, yelp, reading reviews, doing my due diligence, as I hate wasting my time with bad contractors and even worse, getting sub-par work & Ritz Carlton prices. Mike has been my "go-to" pool guy for the past 3 years based on a recommendation from another pool specialist. In March of 2011, we were in the market to get a solar pool heater. I got quotes from Aztec Solar and Sierra Pacific. The salesmen were both nice from those companies and had identical bids (less than $100 difference) -- but wanted to have a 3rd bid. I'm glad that Mike was that 3rd bid. Mike was several hundred dollars less than those other two companies. However, the BIG DIFFERENCE was that Mike installed much higher quality components and equipment. When you factor that into the equation, the spread difference between him and the other guys, Mike was about $1000+ cheaper. He knows what stuff works and what stuff breaks because he constantly fixes this stuff. Think about it... would you rather get car buying advice from a mechanic or a car salesman? The salesman from Aztec Solar, his name is Floyd, knows that he can't compete with Mike on price and quality. I'm guessing that Aztec Solar and Sierra Pacific just hope Mike does not expand his business and marketing in the Solar Business. I have an 18 yr old pool that was built with really crappy components and everything was causing problems. Mike did a great job in explaining what was causing my pool problems and laid out some solutions. He offered some solutions and his suggestions fixed my pool problems. Based on the good reviews on yelp, I hired Mike when my pool pump failed. Mike gave me a call ahead, showed up on time, quickly identified the pump failure and gave me a few options to choose from with pros and cons. I chose to go with an energy efficient variable speed pump. Mike had it installed with 48 hours. I'm very happy with Mike's quality of work and attention to details. The great thing about Mike is that he's very honest with the problem. Never tried to up sell me anything. He even recommended against spending extra to install controller to link solar sensor with the pump speed because of the low return on investment. He also never try to inflate pump cost to make extra profit. I couldn't find online store to beat the pump cost he quoted me. Overall I'm very impressed with Mike. This is long-winded, but I feel like I am a Mike the Poolman expert now, which requires a Yelp review, so here goes: I am a newbie pool owner who has had 3 run-ins with Mike the Poolman and his associates. All 3 times, the service was top notch. We inherited our pool and all its glorious problems when we bought our house in September, and the first company we worked with was far less polite than they were not-accommodating-in-the-least. But not to worry, we found our new pool guy! The first time, we had the filter replaced. This was a very good thing, because the old filter looked like Nessie straight out of the Loch in Scotland. Mike's associate came over and explained everything to me while he was doing it. He did not seem annoyed at all that I was staring at him while he was working (which would annoy me incredibly if someone did that to me). I asked my Dumb Newbie questions as the filter was changed, and received nothing but informative and polite responses back. The water quality seemed to improve after the filter change, which means the new filter was doing its job. He gave the pool a quick inspection, and let me know we had an entrapment issue with a missing drain cover. Which led me to my second run-in.... Not wanting our guests to drown in our pool because we are nice people, we had the missing drain cover replaced. We also chose to replace the other drain cover to match because we are not savages. Mike took his tools under water in a wet suit, and the work was done quickly, and with deft hands. Once again, I was allowed to watch the process and ask newbie questions while staring awkwardly, as seems to be tradition for me during pool repair. After the installation, Mike took a look at the pool and made some more suggestions, and I asked about 8 million more Dumb Newbie questions. I was pleased with his answers and even more so with his patience. Slightly before replacing our drain covers, our pump started screeching like a wounded banshee, and I'm pretty sure all of our neighbors up to 8 blocks away absolutely hated us. We also had this hideously ugly jankity solar pump that looked like it was built at the same time Thomas Edison invented the light bulb in 1879, which worked, but only with some manual prodding. This was tedious, but fine and dandy, until the man of the house (who has nothing to do whatsoever with the pool, its chemicals, or its equipment) turned the solar on without the main pump running. Mike the Poolman caught this upon inspecting the pool for the drain covers, considerately turned it off, informed me how obviously BAD this was, and suggested we install a new pump that a.) replaces said Wounded Banshee Pump, and b.) communicates with the existing solar system. Error proofing, no jankity equipment, and no angry neighbors? Triple win! Let's do it!!! So third run-in, Mike the Poolman ordered the supplies and came out around noon on a Monday to install. I didn't NEED to be there, but I CHOSE to be there because, as I mentioned before, as is tradition, I like to stand around awkwardly and ask Dumb Newbie questions. It took about 6 hours for the equipment to be installed, bless his little heart, but Mike withstood the job with steadfast endurance! Not only was the jankity Thomas Edison solar pump ancient history, but the pipework required to install the new pump and solar actuator was painstakingly painted to match the rest of the equipment! I told him I could have redneck camo'd it myself with some spray paint, but he didn't want to leave without a streamlined look to the new plumbing and equipment. The proper gentleman that he is, he created a seat for me on a bucket so he could show me how my new toys operate. I watched with glee and asked about 8 million more Dumb Newbie questions. All in all, I am blown away by the service I received every single time I received it. I am a little sad that our relationship is ending, as I don't foresee I will have any equipment issues anytime soon. But if I do, Mike the Poolman will be the first guy I pester for help! Not a fan of Mike the Poolman's work, nor ethics. Asked him to come over for an estimate on repairing solar panels. After looking over for 5 minutes, he mentioned he couldn't do the work because the roof was too steep. That's fine, except then he asked me for $70 for the "estimate", even though he never mentioned was a charge for doing the estimate. Paid him his $70 to never have to seem him again...probably worth it. Could not be more disappointed in a service company. read more
