The neighborly atmosphere is completely heart-warming. Mike's is a place where people gather and hang out, not just jostle in line and scowl at one another. They also donate a lot of free donuts to local charitable events and such. Man, it was just a great place. I go there every time I'm in the neighborhood. 3 stars for being independent (ie. not Dunkin) and for serving a pretty big donut. But really this place feels like it's slowly dying and just waiting for the DD franchise offer. The two donuts I've had from here haven't really been upto much apart from having appreciable mass/volume. Coffee was okay but I didn't feel much loved for the staff, the decor or the atmosphere. A redeeming feature is being opposite the Basilica and having a decent view from the windows. If you walk up here from Longwood then you've earned yourself a glazed. Well done you. read more

My favorite thing about Mike's: the ever-present smell of freshly-made donuts coming through my windows. My second favorite thing about Mike's: the delicious donuts in my tummy. My least favorite thing about Mike's: they don't make their own bagels, and instead use frozen ones. Um I mean I have definitely eaten 2 Dunkin Donuts in one sitting but these I could barely finish one. I have half of the cakey delicious glazed. Which wasn't overly sweet and super fluffy. This place makes me wish I was a 75-year-old man. I'd come here at 4 am, sit in my regular booth with a small black coffee and a newspaper, and chat up the other old men with their black coffees and newspapers. Anyway, I have fallen into the habit of stopping in for a coffee on my way to the train in the morning. It's good coffee, quick, and easy. And, if you're into donuts, Mike's are big and fresh. Unfortunately, Santa has something against small businesses and left me a Dunkin Donuts gift card which I am forced to spend down the street until I empty it's $10 allotment. It's like absurdist Breakfast Theater. I watched the two women behind the counter exchange mysterious glances as they slowly but surely mis-took each and every order. Be it prissy girls carefully e-nun-ci-a-ting their requests for croissants, or blue collar guys who claimed to be regulars, all were met with odd interpretations of coffee shop standards. In the background, an elderly man with a paper worked his way serenely through a five course breakfast. The whole deal is a bargain, but it's more about the show than the food. This location is a short walk down Tremont St. once you exit the Roxbury Crossing T station. Mike's is located across the street from the Catholic Cathedral (maybe not directly across from the church but on that side of the street nearby). The inside is small with some tables & chairs. They offer sandwiches, coffee, muffins, and donuts. The dozen donuts are the best deal. The glazed donuts are double-dipped, soft, warm, and smell wonderfully. I believe now a box of 12 donuts costs about $9 or $10 but is worth it! I highly recommend this place. They accept cash or cards. read more

Sadly there are few doughnut places left that are not a Dunkin any longer. But doughnuts were needed and the desire to buy some real ones was high. So a quick search revealed only 2 options in the area so we went with Mikes. It was a great decision. The doughnuts were oversized, fresh and very tasty. They were only a tiny bit more expensive than Dunkin and tasted WAY better.They were not as good as Kane's are, but they are damn good. The glazed one was amazing. Nice and light with lots of glaze while not being overly sugary. The chocolate ones actually taste like real chocolate although are a bit on the cakey side. The old fashioned was perfect although very filling. I also enjoyed the staff while waiting for them to package up 2 dozen we ordered. One guy (seemingly the manager or owner) was talking up the merits of how great the place was and how we should come back more often while the lady behind the counter was friendly and efficient. I would recommend take out as the inside is a bit cramped and a little bit on the divey side. While other reviews said they don't take credit cards they had a sign up saying they did so don't worry about bringing the cash. read more

As a dedicated procrastinator, I often find myself leaving home for work without time to make breakfast. My normal stop would be a Dunkin, until I moved out to Mission Hill and found Mike's. Mike's makes an unarguably superior breakfast sandwich in every way. I was surprised to find that, even though the food is better, and the business is independent, you can still grab a quick bite and a coffee for under $6. There's really no reason to go to to Dunkin if Mike's is in your neighborhood. read more

I ordered the steak, egg and cheese on an English muffin and she threw in a couple of donut holes with it. Yay! When I walk into a donut shop at five o'clock in the morning I'm expecting a freshly made donut, and I'm hoping it's still warm, but what I got here at Mike's tasted like it came from the "day old" discount rack at a supermarket. There is no way this thing was made in the last 24 hours. I saw it sitting on a completely full tray, not a single donut missing, leading me to believe this rack had just been put out. Trickery! It's not just the lack of freshness. I believe a well made donut can develop character after a day or two. The contrast of the firmer crust with a well textured dough can make for even better dunking. But this donut, whenever it was made, was never a very good donut to begin with. The flavor was missing, and it reminded me of eating some 'diet' version of something that tastes like it's had all the life sucked out of it. I am not a regular here, but I stop by a few times a year. I came here the first time in the summer of 1991. It's probably changed hands a few times since then, but it still looks the same. One thing I know for sure is that the quality of donuts has declined steadily. On my last visit, probably over a year ago, the woman behind the counter lamented the city's ban on cooking with trans fats, and how this has made it hard to make a good donut. My immediate response to her was "then stop doing it". She just grinned and shrugged, but I was 100% serious. Mike, please remember that it's all about the donut. Make your donut the best donut it can be, and be willing to pay whatever price it takes to do it. Nobody goes to a donut shop looking for healthy food. Stand up for your donut. The rewards are well worth the risk, I assure you. If you end up paying fines and get your license suspended in order to make me a yummy donut, I can live with that. I was chatting with the owner of the best donut shop in Boston, and when I asked him if he complied with the trans fat ban he looked at me as if I was asking him to join the Communist Party. "No way, who would want to eat something like that?" And one more thing to Mike, if you're making donuts on Sunday night and trying to make enough of them to last you the entire week, please stop doing that. Make them fresh every morning. And if there are some left over at the end of the day, throw them out, don't sell them to me later in the week. I'll close by saying something good about the donut; It was better than Dunkin' Donuts. I live only about a mile away from Mike's Doughnut shop, yet I passed three Dunkin' Donuts on the drive over. I heard that Mike's made their own donuts and I was excited to try something new. I got a dozen for my family this morning. I was definitely happy with the donuts. Overall, I'd say Mike's donuts are about as good as Dunkin's. Mike's does some kinds better, Dunkin does others better. Here's my thoughts: Glazed Donut: Mike's is better. Next time, I'd probably just get all glazed. Mike's melts in your mouth (approaching Krispy Kreme goodness) Boston Creme: Mike's is slightly better. Mike's Boston Creme donut is moister than Dunkin's. Chocolate Donut: Dunkin' is better. Mike's chocolate donut was a little dry and not terribly chocolaty. Buttercrunch/Butternut: Dunkin's is slightly better. The donut itself is about the same, but while somewhat more synthetic tasting, the Dunkin' Donuts topping has more flavor. If you haven't yet, definitely check out Mike's Doughnuts. read more

I think my first mistake was getting a sandwich from a donut shop. I could tell right away it's a place with regulars who sit and chat all day long with the owner. The atmosphere leaves alot to be desired, but the people seem nice. Aside from that, I'll never go back for lunch. I got a chicken salad sandwich with lettuce and tomato and onion. It was messy and the roll totally fell apart; also, there was no flavor, just chunks of dark meat chicken. Positive: it was really cheap and a nice portion.. Mike's is the best non-chain donut shop in boston (that I'm aware of, anyway!) I go here often, usually get a donut... or two... Hey, i'm an inveterately skinny person who has trouble keeping up on calories, ok? Heh. Some people complain about indifferent service. What i've been able to figure out is this, the owners (i'm pretty sure) and a number of those who work there seem to be Greek. Some are nice and some, well, indifferent. I know for sure one woman is really nice, even if I buy just one donut ($1) she often gives extra donut holes, or even sometimes an extra donut. They're also nice about debit/credit cards, they don't moan or have a policy about not buying 2 donuts on a card. The donuts themselves have great texture and are bigger and more real than anything dunkin has. The cinnamon/coffee rolls are huge. The only thing i'd echo is that the chocolate ones are a little dry. It's true, in general your timing matters when it comes to getting the freshest donut, but doesn't it always? Anyways, definitely recommended, i tell tourists about it as well. Isn't it great to sit across from impressive stone architecture munching donuts, with a commanding view of back bay/downtown boston beyond? Mike's is a keeper. read more

I like their old fashioned doughnuts (that's actually the name of a cake-type of doughnut; I'm not calling their doughnuts old fashioned, although maybe they are!), and the coffee is better than it is at Dunkin Donuts. One of the women who's sometimes behind the counter (I think she and her husband are the owners) is pleasant enough. Probably the best thing about this place is that it's open so early in the morning! I always see a few old-timers in there chatting together and I like frequenting small local businesses. Mike's is surely a better bet for your coffee break than the branches of the ever-present Dunkin that are up the street a little ways in both directions. I've never been there at lunch, when they serve soups, sandwiches, and other lunchtime things. They made history when Ted Kennedy's funeral took place across the street at The Mission Church (Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help) and a photo of the storefront appeared in The New York Times! Anyway, donuts are good. The cake donuts have a weird gingery flavor. The service is not that great but you take what you get. Coffee was okay, as far as I remember. We walked across the street and ate them in that park next to the Mission Church. Overall, I really appreciate Mike's as an alternative to Dunkin. It's a local place. It's more of an experience. A friend from overseas came to stay with us for a week, so that she could attend a seminar at the Harvard School of Public Health. I accompanied her into town a few times to help her find her way, and we left early to avoid some of the traffic. I walk by Mike's everyday, two or more times per day actually, and it takes every single bit of strength in my body not to go in there and binge like a mad man.
