Wow. I sure wish I'd read the reviews before using this service! First, I must say that the service provided was good and the electrician that helped us were friendy and skilled. Now, the money thing. We were told the cost per hour for the electrician, and though high, we thought it would be less than two hours of work, so worth it. Two men showed up, the journeyman and his apprentice. I figured that this second person was a trainee and not being paid, and I was never told that we would foot the bill for this apprentice. $80 per hour. Very bad business to add on extra costs without being transparent about it. If you want to train your people, Mike's Electric do it on your own dime. read more

I contacted them through the website contact form and never received a reply. When I called a week and a half later, they said the contact form doesn't work. Lovely. I asked if they could do chandelier re-wiring in order to lower my existing fixture, but they do not do that, despite the website saying that they work on chandeliers. They could install a brand new chandelier, but not re-wire my existing one. They then referred me to another business, the "Lamp Doctor" in Tualitin. I appreciated the referral, but when I called that business, I discovered that is out of business. They definitely need to improve their website and be cognizant of referring to businesses that do not exist. Very frustrating. read more

I'm surprised by some of the negative reviews on Mikes. I have used them for numerous jobs since moving in to my house 5 years ago, the most recent job just 2 weeks ago with the installation of Kitchen and Outdoor lighting. They were quick to send an estimator out, and get an estimate to me. Once I gave the go ahead, someone came to complete the job within 2 days and did it amazingly well. I will continue to happily use Mike's Electric and recommend them to anyone who needs competent electricians. read more

Use at own risk. Found on Angie's List, but was very shocked when bill came and had no explanation for over 400 dollars! Owner claims this was a computer error and was corrected immediately. It was not. He argued with me over the phone about it. Owner quoted me $246 for 2 hours' work. Got the bill later by mail: $45 material, $216 journeyman labor, $140 apprentice labor (which I never agreed to), $243 and $180 for I don't know what as there's nothing written for these 2 charges, for a total of $824. Called owner and he argued with me over the charges (he did not fix this immediately as he said). He reluctantly lowered the bill to $400+ which is still way over proper amount. I had to continue explaining how I wasn't going to pay $824 or $400+, how I should not have to pay for apprentice labor, how total time was only 2 hours, not 2 hours 45 minutes as he claimed, how workers had to repeatedly go out to van for tools, etc., and that I was only paying for quoted price and actual time. He finally agreed to this and we agreed he'd send a revised invoice, which came with total cost of $291 which is closer to quoted and appropriate amount. Paid bill by check (he claims I agreed to pay by credit card which I never did) and concluded our transaction. He's still trying to argue all this on Angie's List! Don't let them send you an invoice. Pay right then for the agreed upon services. Will not use Mike's Electric again nor advise others to do so. I also reported this to the Better Business Bureau. read more

I've used Mike's Electric for several electrical jobs at my home in the Beaverton area. The first few times, they've arrived on time and performed the work perfectly. Their prices have always seemed a bit high, though. The second to last time that they came out to do the work, some things went wrong, but they eventually did come back out and make it right. These guys are great. I bought an older house last year that needed miscellaneous electrical upgrades. They've helped wire a lamp in the front yard and repair some lights/outlets around the house. I've called them three times in the past year, and each time they've been excellent. The electricians are intelligent, hardworking, and friendly. The price is fair. We requested estimates from 3 companies including Mike's Electric for the following work. 1. Add receptacle under kitchen sink for newly installed water filter. 2. Add electrical receptacle in hallway. There is an existing outlet on opposite side of wall. Mike's Electric provided rough estimate ranges for each requested outlet (1. $277-$337, 2. $100-$150). RK Electric gave a verbal estimate of $500-$900 for both. Falcon Electric responded "In order to give you an accurate estimate for this type of work, I'd have to see it." That was after indicating he had no availability for about 6 weeks. We had Mike's Electric do work for us before and were very pleased, so we were comfortable with choosing them this time, too. It didn't hurt that they provided an estimate over the phone when requested. And that estimate looked better than the other one we had. They were able to schedule our work for 5 days later at 1:00pm. On the day of service, Aaron, the electrician assigned to our job, called at around 11:00am. He was ahead of schedule and asked if it would be okay if he arrived early, in about 15 minutes. We were very happy to get the work started earlier, so we said okay. After arriving, he discussed with us the requested work. He suggested a solution for the under-sink outlet that actually resulted in getting the job done in less time than we were expecting. He was courteous and professional at all times. He was careful to make sure everything was cleaned up when he was done. We are very pleased with the quality of work. And the actual invoiced amount was $357.00, which is less than the original estimate. I would definitely recommend Mike's Electric if you need electrical work done. read more

If I could give zero stars I would. I had used this company once before for a small job involving some additional outlets and ceiling fan, and they performed fine. Then called them for a larger project involving a kitchen and their estimator came out. He gave us a verbal bid of over twice what the other companies quoted, (and what we eventually paid another company). Their estimator made a huge deal out of every item we wanted to do, and cited code issues which I eventually found were incorrect (the electrician we hired obtained a permit and were approved with no problems or corrections). To top this the estimator cited NON ELECTRICAL code issues on our outside deck that he said should be corrected since the inspector would see it (we just bought house and had planned to remove deck anyway). I obviously didn't use this company and would definitely not recommend to anyone. read more

A few weeks ago we discovered a breaker in our basement that kept blowing. I contacted several companies on a Sunday and Mike's was the only one to get back to me that day which I greatly appreciated (for that matter they were the only company to get back to me within 4 days!). They came out a few days ago on time - diagnosed the problem, repaired it - all for what our contact thought it would cost. They have been available by email to answer any questions I had before and after the repair. I've added them to our preferred contractor list (companies that we feel comfortable referring to families and friends) and I recommend them. I'll also note that the reviews on Angie's List are way more positive then the ones on YELP - with a higher sample - over 1000 reviews. Not sure why these are so much different. read more

Almost $300 to install a ceiling fan??? No re-wiring, and yes they had to replace the box due to the weight of the fan, but what a rip-off. No wonder they send a bill in the mail, I don't think they could look a customer in the eye with their rates. read more

I've had Mike's Electric out several times for different things. I find that they are always very honest and professional. I called them this time to check out why an outlet in the garage wasn't working and to replace a bathroom fan I thought was too loud. They were quick to assess and fix the situation with the outlet in the garage, and they tested the fan in the bath and said it was well within levels that would pass inspection since we were thinking of selling our house. I was all prepared to purchase a new fan and have it installed, but they said to 'keep my money'. I appreciate their honesty. I will definitely call them next time. I'm not sure what it is with the reviews on this site. They have excellent reviews on all other sites, which is truly well deserved. read more

I called and spoke with Michael Grote to make an appointment and asked for an estimate to install two ceiling fans- he requested photos, which I sent promptly- but I never heard back with an estimate. When two electricians showed up I figured one was doing on the job learning and I wouldn't be charged for it. These were simple installs- I didn't even have the wall control installed as that would have required cutting the dry wall and I didn't want the hassle of doing repairs. I was shocked when the bill arrived for $944.50! They charged for a permit, material, journeyman and apprentice labor, and travel time. Ridiculously abusive billing practices. And on top of that, the fans were both making a rattling noise. I called and complained about both the bill and the noise. I shouldn't have paid anything until it was resolved, but I paid $800 before getting the fan noise addressed. They came out again last week to address the noise and now they are charging another $344.50! I just submitted a complaint to BBB. Don't do business with this company- they are dishonest and disreputable. read more

Our experience with Mike's Electric was a nightmare. Their basic work is good, but they left a mess. They disconnected all outlets in our workbench area without thinking through that issue and reattaching the outlets after the lighting changes were made. But the HUGE issue is that Mike's asserts they they do not provide a BID but an ESTIMATE. Your bill may have no bearing to their "estimate" - mine was more than $2,000.00 more than their bid. Then they are very aggressive with their collection, so I paid more than $2,000.00 for nothing just to make sure my property did not get liened. Brad (Journeyman) and Roman (Apprentice) were a great team. They got right to work on several projects. They worked independently when possible and as a team when necessary. They had all the tools and supplies needed and were extremely professional. We were very happy with the work and would use them again! There was a billing issue that was resolved to our satisfaction after several emails and a phone call. It would be helpful to have the charges itemized on the initial invoice. Also, verbal and written confirmation regarding when the billing clock starts ticking would have helped to avoid a miscommunication/misunderstanding. read more

I was very pleased they were able to send out a technician the same day as I was stressing over getting ready for Christmas and many of my outlets were not working. The technician was pleasant and efficient -- found the problem quickly and solved it. Price was around what I would expect for a skilled electrician - $272 for labor and material for a little over an hour of work. read more

While the actual electrician did a good job, Mike's Electric came in way over budget from what we were quoted. There was a general lack of communication about the rising costs and what services were covered under the different invoices. We would have liked to have been consulted when the costs exceeded what was quoted to us by Mike's. Also, Mike's was very dismissive when addressing our cost concerns and demanded payment before things were resolved. All-in-all, they are overpriced (ending up being 250% more than the rest of the contractors used on the job) and need to be heavily managed to stay within a budget. Got a verbal quote for $135/hour (min one hour) and ability to pay with credit card or a a small job: one light not working. Was told I should wait for a certain electrician, who was not immediately available...so I scheduled a few days out for a weekday at 11am. was told he would arrive between 11am and 1pm. I called at 1:15 and was told their service guy was running late but should be there within an hour. (normal customer service would have had THEM call ME when they knew their guy was running late) Man I got on phone was very rude and not the lady who booked and quoted me. Electrician finally showed up at 6:30 pm. With my help (yes very weird) he coached his apprentice through the job and finished in one hour. Got a bill a few days later charging me for both the electrician AND their trainee for 2 hours! Tried to contact online and also to pay what I truly owed ($135) online. their secure payment system was down. next thing I get another invoice charging late fees. We finally resolved, but advise against using this outfit. read more

I am very disappointed with mikes electric and would never refer them. I contacted the office spoke to a rep there, informed them what needed to be completed and was told it would cost $500. I set the appointment. I called the day of the appointment to ask if someone could call me 30 minutes before they were showing up. The receptionist said yes not a problem. The time frame was 1pm-4pm. Around 12:45 no one had called me and my husband said to call. They had forgotten to call me and were en route so of course I rush out of work and make it home within 20 minutes. I can't tell from the bill but I believe they started to charge me the second they arrived and they had been waiting. Two guys come in and completed the job, work was minimal, nothing too complicated. When they are completed I have my checkbook to write a check for 500 then said no I will get a bill, no biggie. The bill comes for 705 and I believe they mislead me. I am completely disappointed. I mail a check with a note explaining how disappointed I am and nothing not even a phone. I waited to write this Yelp review to see if someone would call but nothing. They don't care about their customers, they quote you one price and bill another. That's not right! read more

Clint from Mikes Electric came out the other day to track down a reason the lights were out in part of the house. He was courteous and very thorough and didn't stop until he found the cause of the power outage. Then he fixed it. We are very happy with Mike's and will call them again - if/when needed. I was referred to Mike's electric by the company who installed my sub pump in the crawlspace (John's Waterproofing--They were great!) to put an electrical outlet in my crawlspace for the pump. Because they had done a lot of work with John's Waterproofing I asked them to give me an estimate on the work, and they said $450-$650. I said that sounded a little high, but the guy I spoke to said they were a little conservative with their estimates because they didn't want their customers to be surprised if the estimate was higher. After doing the work, which I will say they did well as far as I know I received an invoice for $915. I called them to discuss the bill and they said due to the extra work they needed to do and the extra materials involved that was the right price. Moving forward, I highly suggest if you're being "conservative" with a job you have done many times you give an honest high/low estimate. Pretty disappointing.... read more

I've used mike's electric multiple times. It took three times for them to figure out that there was a problem with the main line coming into the house. In that amount of time the short burned out my oven which I had to replace. The last time that I used them, they showed up late. They gave me a 15 minute window of when they would be there, but when they didn't show beyond that time, I left. They called me and said that I would need to reschedule. When I called back to state that I wanted to go with someone else, they failed to mention that I would receive a $140 bill for their time. When I complained, they said that it was an "estimated time" and that they could show up much later than the 15 minute window. I took responsibility for having limited time to wait around, so I agreed to pay their $33 travel cost, but again, they did no work whatsoever and showed up late. Multiple contacts within the office were unpleasant and weren't interested in taking responsibility for being late. Agree with the other reviews, never again. I hope that at some point electricians and contractors will finally understand that customer service is important. read more

This is the second time we have used Mike's Electric for a variety of projects. Based on the quality and price of their work, we won't hesitate to use them again and refer them to others. On this project, Aaron and Doug installed outdoor security lights and landscaping lighting for our yard. They arrived promptly and completed both tasks efficiently and well. An estimate from another well known firm in Portland was not only higher but did not include full installation of lines through our brick walkway and among the plants and trees (they had suggested we have a landscaper complete the work). Mike's did it all -- saving us time and money. They also gave us excellent advice on the layout and direction of the lights. read more

I called to see if someone could come to my house and give me an estimate for the work I needed done. I get home at 4:30. They would not come over later than 4:00. really???? 30 minutes!!! I needed help changing light bulbs in my chandelier. Sounds like a something I could do myself, but I don't have a ladder tall enough. I searched online for help and Mike's came up. I called and the man on the phone was nice and helpful. 45 minutes later 2 electricians showed up, one of which was a cute apprentice (I think his name was Alex) and got the job done in minutes.
