My friends and I booked a pasta-making class at Mike's Pasta & Sandwich Shoppe and it was such a fun, unique night out! They host small private groups (3-6 people), and the space felt really cozy and intimate. By day it's a sandwich shop (the sandwiches look amazing!) and he also sells fresh homemade pasta and sauces to take home -- we can't wait to go back and try them. Mike reached out beforehand to ask about our preferences, which was such a thoughtful touch. The night started with a delicious antipasto spread, dip with bread, and a burrata salad, then we learned to make pasta from scratch. Mike was friendly, funny, and super patient. It was very beginner-friendly and we learned so much. Robyn was also super sweet and helpful -- she packaged up the pasta we made and regularly checked on us at the table to make sure we had everything we needed. Afterward we enjoyed multiple pasta dishes, amazing dessert, and we left completely stuffed with extras packaged to take home. It's BYOB and the experience lasted almost 3 hours. Stopped by Mike's sandwich shop and had a nice experience. The staff were all super welcoming and the space was super clean and modern but somehow reminiscent of an old-school butcher shop. I got the all of em' sandwich which features prosciutto, mortadella, capicola, and sopressata (hence the "all of em") and it was delicious. What was more cool though was when I asked the guy making the sandwiches if I should get mayo on it and he weighed in with his professional advice and said that it might dry out the meats and suggested I go with oil and vinegar instead. He could have been a jerk and rolled his eyes like "get whatever you want man" but he was super nice and gave me his honest opinion. I really appreciated that. Mike's is a fabulous place for a sandwich and fresh pasta. I stopped in one day and got a couple sandwiches for a lunch with some family. We all shared the fried eggplant which was delicious - it had a tomato jam that made all the difference. The chicken and nduja was also very good, had a nice spicy kick to it. I also got a regular chicken cutlet and fresh mozzarella sandwich, I wanted to try their garlic Mayo but they forgot that on the sandwich. Honestly it's understandable - they are busy. It's a small store but the phone is constantly ringing and these guys are working hard behind the counter. It's located in a residential area so parking isn't an issue at all. I'll definitely try their fresh pasta next time. I got a small container of the regular Mac salad and I honestly don't evened enjoy macaroni salad but this one was truly delicious. I placed a mobile order for a custom sandwich through Doordash and it was a quick and easy process! It gave all the options to build a custom sandwich that was on their menu and it was quick to arrive. The sandwich itself was fantastic! The bread has a flakey, crunchy crust and a soft inside. The breaded chicken was fresh and had great flavor. I added on the broccoli rabe topping as well and I enjoyed it a lot, my only suggestion is that I wish it had more on the sandwich! I loove broccoli rabe and I do think it needed more with it being a $1 extra add on. Other than that I really liked this sandwich and I will definitely be coming back soon. read more

We had high hopes for Mikes but the place was your average sandwhich shop and the chicken cutlet sandwhich was not bad but could easily be a lot better. The bread was kind of hard/stale & the cutlets were kind of cold. The staff was friendly and the prices were reasonable. I definitely can't complain about portions though; it was a big sandwich for a fair price. The deli itself is very clean and nicely set up. It is strictly a pick up spot with no indoor seating. I did not get any on this trip but they definitely have a great selection of pastas. Looks like a good spot if you're looking to pick up ingredients for a meal at home. Pretty damn good. Having just returned from Italy I let them know the bar was high and they recommended the fried eggplant sandwich which can I just say was an absolute treat and then some. The eggplant was more than generous in portion and had the perfectly crispy texture that did not take away from the delicate flavor of the thinly sliced eggplant. The ricotta spread was awesome and the jam added just enough of a tang/sweet flavor that didn't overpower. The bread which I always say really makes or breaks a sandwich was a soft and chewy roll that just tied it all together! For my daughter we had the prosciutto and salami on a sub roll which pictures just don't do justice. The staff was friendly and helpful, and one of the guys gave my daughter a chocolate chip cookie from the counter which was sweet. I must say I was more than pleasantly surprised. Price wise I was thinking it was quite pricey but the size of these sandwiches are more than though for two people or two servings. Parking is side street parking which is tough, and the only other downside would be lack of any seating outside or inside. read more

If you are in North Jersey and you're looking for a great deli, this is the place. Everything is scratch made from the fresh mozzarella pulled every morning to the savory pasta made in house, and all the amazing sauces of course! I had to try the fried egg plant sandwich, complete with a variety of sauces and fresh whipped ricotta, the combination of salty and sweet was sheer perfection. I got the eggplant and it was one of the best I have ever had. The sesame roll was super flavorful, with the perfect bite (hard and soft) that kept it structure the whole time. The eggplant was cooked perfectly, crispy exterior with a soft interior, but not soggy (and super thin). After the Creste di Gallo was quickly devoured in night one, we had do try the linguine the next night...it didn't disappoint! Turns out they shop is 10 minutes from work so I had to try a sandwich. I went with the Chicken Cutlet...wow! The roll, fantastic. The cutlet, fantastic. The addition of the provolone, roasted red peppers (yes) arugula and balsamic made it complete. Once you go inside, you see the small main area where you can order sandwiches and pasta salads, along with packaged homemade pastas, sauces, and soups! If you venture inside and look to the room on your left, you will see where the magic happens! They are always making homemade pasta daily. Do yourself a favor and purchase some of their homemade pasta to take home and cook, as it is soooooo good! If you are looking to get a particular one they make, they have a list of pastas on their website and ask you give them a 48 hour lead time. I have visited here a few times to get their sandwiches. My absolute favorite here is their Chicken Cutlet sandwich, so simple, yet so delicious! You got that cutlet with roasted peppers and provolone, a perfect combination! Oh oh, and do not sleep on their pasta salads. You can order them weight and I had so many good ones. My favorite one they offer is the Truffle Mac Salad, as the truffle is not too overpowering for me and had some great taste! Mike's is the reason my family and I loved living in neighboring Belleville. Since having Mike's fresh pasta, we have not gone back to regular ol' boxed pasta. Even my 17 month old toddler has gotten accustomed to Mike's fresh pasta. We've gone weekly to pick up at least two pounds of pasta. Always worth it. This place is a neighborhood gem. A few blocks from the main drag in Nutley, Mike's is worth finding. The friendly staff always greets the customers when you walk through the door. You must order some of their outstanding sandwiches. All of the ingredients are top notch, including the bread. I recommend one the the daily sandwich specials. Growing up in an Italian household no matter how early I got up on a Sunday morning my parents would already be in the kitchen working on their gravy and an album by someone like Frank Sinatra or Perry Como was playing. And you ate dinner at 2pm and salad was last and not first and all your friends on your block of course goofed on you. "It's sauce, not gravy!" "Dinner at two-in-the-afternoon? Do you go to bed before the James Bond movie plays on Channel 7?!" I didn't continue the tradition (one of my kids doesn't even like anything having to do with tomatoes which is baffling) but then I saw on Instagram a post regarding 'SUNDAY GRAVY DINNER PACKS' and I knew I had to check Mike's out. You walk in and you see a slew of freshly-made delicious-looking pastas for sale and over the sound system I hear Goldfinger right into The Descendents and now it's kinda impossible for me to NOT give them 5-stars. The dinner-kit (aka - "Italian Army MRE's") included fresh pasta (two choices, I went with the Creste di galli), a container of gravy (!) - with sausage and meatballs separate, a large salad (with a side of dressing), and a baguette. It was a huge amount of food for under $50. Supreme on almost every level. For the sake of nitpicking I'd say the sausage was the weak link out of everything. (If they worked with the almighty Garruto's a few blocks away - it would be unbeatable.) Nutley has a ridiculous amount of quality Italian places and Mike's just shot up into my Top 5. (If/when the world goes back to normal and we're COVID-free - if Mike's would offer pasta-making classes at their shop I'd definitely sign up.) read more

The owners previously worked for Pig & Prince in Montclair and came up with this genius idea to open a place with fresh pasta, fresh salads (macaroni, tuna, chicken, etc), great sandwiches, soups, imported cheese, etc. and best part is it opened in Nutley. Love local places like this. The staff are so down to earth and makes great recommendations. They also mentioned that on weekends they plan to have special dinners where reservations are needed and only a certain amount of people can sign up because their place is not too big but their back area is inviting with a good amount of space for at least 10 people comfortably. I look forward to reserving one night with the hubby. My all time favorite is their Macaroni Salad.... it's soooooooooo good and their Chicken Cutlet and Eggplant are so good too! When this spot first opened, I raved about it to everyone. Best sandwiches in the area hands down. Unfortunately, the past few times, it's been sliding down hill. Last two times, the pricey sandwiches were pretty dinky. I'll happily pay the $$ for quality, but don't charge $16 for a sandwich and slap 4 slices of meat on it. Today, the macaroni salad (one of my favorite items...it's always been incredible), had a really strange texture and I found it inedible. That was a bummer. Giving these dudes 4-stars instead of 3 or 2 because I hope they'll turn things around in the future. So I heard that highly regarded Montclair, NJ restaurant Pig & Prince closed and (unfortunately) I never got the chance to check it out. THEN, I heard that the chef ( a Food Network Chopped winner!) and the sous chef from said restaurant opened up a fresh pasta & sandwich shop in Nutley and THEN after sending in one of my paisans from Nutley who gave it a mighty thumbs up, I started recommending this place to all my Foodie contacts..even without a taste of their goods......I gambled...stuck my reputation out there... Well, I won this bet. I finally checked in yesterday since I was in the neighborhood and I'm glad I did. I often talk about growing up in Cliffside Park\Fairview, NJ what with all the old school Italian "sangwich" delis and all their provisions...that once the old timers pass on, so does their legacy. Well here is a NEW place with that type of food for the next generation! HUZZAH! We have plenty of new "this and that" restaurants popping up... what the world needs is this type of place. Simply put a good place to get a good "sangwich" at a good price. But what is really stands out about Mike's is that his homemade pasta and sauces are off the charts. EXCELLENT. I took home his braised short rib raviolis and served them in a sage butter sauce and I was sad when they were all gone... add a nice heavy red wine or a good thick craft beer and man o man...whatta meal. Also tried their ricotta cappolinis ( hats in Italian). Very similar to raviolis but more plump. I served them with Mike's homemade Chicken Bolognese ..what a great sauce!!!! Mike's sells a variety of pastas & sauces as well as some good stocks for when you want to create your own meals. Back to the sandwiches..... Their eggplant hero has homemade ricotta with tomato jam that gives it a light sweetness that I was not expecting. Very good, but don't compare it to the local pizzeria style. Their chicken cutlet hero was very good, although it could have used more cheese. But their sandwich called "ALL OF EM " with PROSCIUTTO, CAPICOLA, SOPRESSATA, MORTADELLA, PROVOLONE PICCANTE, and CHERRY PEPPERS with L+T+O and O+V was a nice thick piece of Italian heaven.... So get on down there and give some talented young guys your support! read more
