If they could solve this one issue with the Roast Beef Poboy they could be great. In fairness, if I have a choice, it's going to be roast beef 90% of the time and these people have every element down except the gravy. The have the right bread from Liedenheiners The have the right toppings (mayo, lettuce, tomato, and pickles) The roast beef is good enough. (ideally a place that cooks their own is best but hardly anyone does that anymore) But they totally lose it with the gravy here. It's like a clear gelatin with no beef base or flavor at all. Not only is it not adding anything to the flavor, but it's unattractive. I can see they've been there a while so they probably don't need me to succeed and maybe the other choices would be fine there, but If they were open to use a better gravy (I'd be happy to share a recipe with them) then I'd find myself there once a week or so. On a good note - they do know how to make pork fried rice better than almost any chinese restaurant I can find in town. Wish they had a chinese menu to go with it. The lady that runs it is sweet and competent and the service is great. Only Gravy stands in the way of Good to Great! read more

We searched for a good poboy spot after our visit to Houmas House and Mike's was the closest. The menu looked good so we decided to stop in and get some poboys to take back to the house. We ordered a small fried oyster and an XL fried shrimp with a large order of five. There were 5 in our party and we had so much food. The shrimp was large and delicious. The oysters were cooked well too. This place has been bookmarked on our Yelp file to return when we come back to Baton Rouge next time! read more

I haven't eaten here in a while so today we thought to give it a try. We Ordered three regular shrimp poboy's $41 and my son noticed that the shrimp weren't whole shrimp, rather more like tiny shrimp parts formed into a kinda shrimp ball ... So much breading, it was difficult to find a whole shrimp. Not sure what this is, but NO THANKS !! Oh well, another poboy place bites the dust. So very sad!! read more

The Po Boys are good, but I really like the fried rice and eggrolls here. I have gotten them several times. They are simple, but they are so good. The BBQ Pork fried rice is my favorite. Simple, flavorful and filling. Hard to beat the price when a large fried rice and two eggrolls go for under $10 with plenty of rice left for another meal. . I've also had the Po Boys. My favorite is the grilled shrimp, fully dressed. The Po Boys are huge too. A small in enough to fill me up with out a side and costs about $6. The place is small with about 10 tables and usually packed around lunch time. Want to save some time and avoid the wait then call in your order for pick up. read more

The "shrimp" on the fried shrimp Poboy is actually bait shrimp mashed together with batter to resemble jumbo shrimp. This used to be a great place for fried seafood. Now, not so much. read more

Roast beef poboy was pretty lacking in flavor (canned gravy?) and the french bread had a microwaved, chewy texture. Definitely doesn't represent SWLA very well. Thinking perhaps they should concentrate on Asian, which looked decent enough. Bathrooms were really dirty with heavy buildup of grime and smell. read more

Pulled over after NEEDING a po boy like a drug addict. Ordered the shrimp po boy (fried although I hear grilled is good too) and an egg roll all because of Yelp. EXCELLENT! I'm not an egg roll man (or an egg roll can) so let's ignore that-- the po boy was an old fashioned fast Louisiana lunch and after I slathered on the hot sauce (how else would you eat it?) it was delicous. I supppose now that I mentioned it in a parenthetical there are a variety of ways that one could eat a poboy. With gravy, with catsup and blustard (that's blustering mustard) or simply dip it in Gatorade and eat it on a long run. You could likely use a poboy as the condiments for a poboy, thus slathering a heaping helping of poboy on your poboy. Oh boy. A truly authentic Louisiana experience, without the fear of being killed by a gator. So glad I pulled over. Now. If I can just return the money I stole from my grandmother for the fix.... read more

Heard from some locals the place was good and since it was right next to Onestop Barber thought I woudl grab a bite before getting my hair cut - had the roast beef with gravy poboy - I've had better - really not a good choice given the consisitency of the bread, which is delightful by the way - but you gotta tear that bread so it in turn causes you to pull the roast beef out of the poboy and then you got a mess on your hands!! What with the gravy and the fact that it is heavily dressed. They really should have paper towels on the tables instead of the flimsy restaurant napkins. I will give it another try, no doubt about that but will probabaly go with an oyster or catfish poboy or maybe one of their hot lunches. Do give it a try if in Gonzales but just be mindful of the roast beef poboy and if you want it be prepared to eat messy!! read more

This was a childhood staple for my family. Where else can you get po'boys and egg rolls and fried rice under the same roof? Nowhere I've seen, and I can't imagine it being much better than this. I moved away nine years ago and come back every time I'm in town. It still lives up to my expectation. The seafood is always fresh, as is all the food, friendly and fast service. The place doesn't look like much, but it's a real gem, and I'm proud it's in Gonzales. If you're around, eat here. read more

DO NOT waste you time here. In the heart of cajun country this place in an insult to our heritage. I ordered their fried shrimp poboy and had to throw it in the trash after 2 bites. I opened it up and dissected the shrimp. The was a tiny piece of shrimp about the size of a pea wrapped around ground up fish. Don't believe me - go try it. Sad. I asked for a refund and this lady got pretty upset at me, I let it go. How this place is still in business boggles my mind. I don't like writing negative reviews, but maybe this will help the owners get real with their fried shrimp poboy's. read more

I have had their oyster and catfish po'boys. They were only alright I thought. The oysters were overcooked I thought and the catfish is really thin and too much breading. Bread is pretty good, chewy, you gotta use ya teeth, haha. They didn't have alot of choices for hot sauce either. Place is clean and they are fast. People working there are nice. Just didn't blow my mind or anything. Might try the fried rice next time though, since people are saying it's good. read more

I have been eating here for years. Same great food each time I visit. Busy at lunch so come early or a little later if you are in a crunch. The egg rolls are so fresh I suspect they are handmade. I was on my way to Baton Rouge from New Orleans and pulled off on a Gonzales exit to yelp "Po' Boy Sandwich" and was directed to Mike's. It's in a tiny, two, maybe three store strip mall. The ambience is "clean" except for the typical Louisiana bathroom which was "clean but sketchy". Plain tables, no decor that I can remember except for the TV with CNN and Donald Trump talking. They have Zapp's chips, which are the best chips in the U.S.A. I got a bag of Voodoo for my appetizer and ordered the 14" fried shrimp Po' Boy. They have 7", 10", 14" and 20". So they must have some long bread in there. The sandwich was perfect; loaded with fried shrimp, the bread was crunchy on the outside, and it was dressed with lettuce, tomato and mayo. I added some Louisiana hot sauce that was on the table and I was good to go. It was about 3 p.m. when I stopped in here and there must have been 10 people in the place. Crazy, if you ask me, but I'm not from around here. Service was friendly and quick. read more

Had lunch here today for the first time with my husband. I ordered the fried chicken Po Boy, and my husband ordered the grilled shrimp Po Boy. After putting hot sauce(only one selection) on mine, it wasn't that bad, the bread was good, and the size of the sandwich was good for the price, but I do wish it tasted as good as it looked. I tried my husbands grilled shrimp on his sandwich, and was not impressed, kind of chewy and bland. Also the napkins need to be more than one ply thick, and bigger since Po Boys can be kind of messy. I will go back to try the fried rice since that seemed to be the item that most people were eating/ordering while we were there. read more

Ordered a grilled shrimp, and it was not seasoned with any spices at all. No, it did not "change my life" - no where near that. Not sure what that other yelp reviewer was talking about. Love this stuff. Great po-boys of all kinds. I usually get the fish or shrimp. Instead of fries I get pork or shrimp fried rice.

Probably the best place to get Po Boys in Gonzales. They are good and cheap. I'd reccomend the shrimp Po Boy or the Crabmeat Patty. Great place for lunch. read more

I had the fried oyster po boy & onion rings. Not bad but not superb. The food was made fresh. Onion rings are not house made but weren't bad. The lady at the counter was somewhat friendly. However, she was eating noodles while she was taking my order. The worst thing was seeing the lady that was cleaning tables pick her nose as she walked to the back. Then return to the dining room about a minute later.....not gone long enough to wash her hands!! Wish I had just drove to Baton Rouge to eat at Po Boy Express. read more
