I waltzed in around 2PM on a hot, sunny Wednesday afternoon and the place was completely empty, save for the two sandwich guys behind the counter. As a first timer, I asked the older guy, who was extremely friendly for the house special sub. He quickly responded "a Number 12," and proceeded to make me Mike's most popular sandwich. I was in the mood for an overstuffed Italian Sub. What I got was much closer to a "hum drum" Ham n' Cheese! What can I say? Everything about the #12 Special was ... well, ordinary bordering on bland. Tasteless, albeit fresh but slightly spongy Italian bread. Fresh sliced, fresh tasting ham; a couple of slices of salami; and a thin layer of provolone. The garnish consisted of a handful of hopefully-not-from Taylor Farms lettuce, 3-4 razor thin tomato slices & a few onion shards. There you have it. Mike's #12! I have always pass by this place and for some reason when you talk about Keyport Mike's Sub Shop is sometimes discussed. It's a cash only spot and it really lives up to a small family owned restaurant. I tried their chicken parm sub and it was good. I enjoyed the sandwich and had no complaints. Sad to say a week prepared sub with shredded lettuce and fine cut meats was shot down to a 2 star rating because of stale bread:( I came in on a Wednesday afternoon about 3pm so you do the freshness math: possibly Tuesday morning delivery bread? Either way it should have been tossed. I'm pretty sure it was the owner who cuts the meat and grabs the bread, so not good biz practice. Needed to update my review as this sub shop is the best in Keyport. Been coming here since I was a little girl and the subs here are still delicious. Great salads too. Always made fresh to order. It's a popular place around meal time so many times I call in my order and it's ready upon arrival. Owners work hard and have a great relationship with their customers. The food is fine, but i'm really not sure why the older guy behind the counter has such a condescending, snarky attitude. I asked for a turkey and cheese with everything +mayo and he acted bothered for some reason. Even the lady working with him glared at him then looked back at me like she knew he was being an a** for no reason. Sad because it ruined an otherwise good sub shop for me. All I can say is wow! This is the real deal. If your looking for a genuine, over the top New Jersey sub sandwich, this is it! Mikes Subs is what Subway And Jersey Mike's are trying to copy...but they can't. Everything is fresh, the sandwiches are stuffed and delicious. The cold cuts are sliced very thin. Which enhances the flavor. Then they're piled high and topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, oregano, oil and wine vinegar. Inside, I met people who've come from North Carolina and from Florida just to get a taste of a REAL submarine sandwich, and this place is worth the pilgrimage! read more

Since 1961... Stand alone store ( yay) that is pretty efficient on the weekends. Stopped in the other day for a couple of sandwiches to go. The staff is like a well oiled machine. Place your order on the left and get the works to make things quicker. I ordered a daily special which had capicola, salami and provolone cheese on whole wheat bread. She went for a 1/2 of the pressed ham, provolone cheese and salami on white bread plus added sweet peppers. You can dine in at this place. They have 8 or 9 small tables right in the middle if you choose. But we were on our way home after shopping in the area. They are a cash only business and does catering for small parties. Even though they don't have their own parking lot it really wasn't hard to find. Noticed that you can use one shared with the post office right next store. Oh and do check out those black and white area photos on the front wall before leaving. read more

I am not quite sure where 4.5 stars comes from, but if rating the guys working, they would get a 5 out of 5. But, I came for food, and this places is generic. First, there is no oven or stovetop, so microwave is the name of the game for a chicken parm. I can't confirm but I believe their chicken was frozen and not hand-made, but won't ruin their name without certainty. The sauce of my sandwich was great (assuming it was house-made), and it was made well, so can't fault them for that. But, with no oven, a microwave-prepared sandwich is not my preference coming from a place like CT where you get some amazing subs. I wouldn't go back unless I needed to, or if I wanted a cold-cut sandwich (which I don't). But, nice guys and if this doesn't matter to you, you will find a friendly atmosphere and quick and clean service. read more

The special ham, capicola, salami and provolone sub was ok. All the meats tasted the same, cheese wasn't too strong. Veg were fresh and bread was huge and soft. I'd take this over a subway or Jersey Mike's, but it's nothing special. The tuna was absolutely gross. My wife thought it tasted sweet, but I was getting a vinegar flavor. The consistency was liquid. The sub is really good. the sub isn't overstuffed like some of the other sub shops in the area but each ingredient is actually proportional weighted to each other; there is a tasty balance between each ingredient. The ingredients are also very fresh. The owner was talking about how he freshly cuts all the vegetables every morning.( they looked fresh and more importantly tasted fresh .) The bread was also amazing. it seems fresh and was very nice and fluffy. I dont know if it was the sauce, cheese, chicken or all combined but I ended eating a quarter of it and throwing it out. Horrible flavor mix. Had to be the sauce. Looked to be mostly chopped tomatoes and barely any sauce and the mozz was probably bag shredded garbage. The chicken salad was so watered down with mayonnaise my girl couldnt eat it. Driving through Keyport with my wife I noticed the huge sign on the side of the building advertising their Subs. I vowed to come back and try it. First impressions on walking into Mike's was the fresh smell of vinegar that wafted out of the door when it was opened. This place was kept in very clean condition. It almost felt like there was something missing because it was so clean. Their menu is on the wall and has all sorts of different combinations however they are mostly centered around the classic Italian style sandwich (Some kind of Ham, some kind of Salami and mostly provolone cheese). When I gave my order of Cappicola, Salami and Provolone he said "half a #6". I wonder why they don't put the numbers up on the board? The Italian style sub was classic NJ. They have their counter set up to make sandwiches consistent and fresh. I asked for hot peppers on my sandwich and they took a whole pickled cherry pepper and just broke it over the sandwich which I thought was strange. Why not cut it up? What makes this place special is the people who work there. If you eat in you are almost forced to be a part of the conversation. There is an old Vet "Uncle Joe" that hangs out there and talks about playing his accordion or organ. As a local, this was the first place since March 2020 that I ordered food from, rather than cooking myself. I appreciated that I had to call ahead and they opened the door only to give me my order while wearing a mask that covered both nose and mouth. That is why I was surprised the last time I went there a couple of weeks ago. You could go inside but there were marks on the floor to help you to remember to use social distancing. It was a busy Sarurday, so there was a line and plenty of time to watch as an elderly gentleman cut all the bread. His mask didn't cover his nose and kept falling down past his mouth. He was constantly touching his face as he attempted to push the mask up prior to returning to cutting the bread. After awhile, I just became so grossed out and worried about his possibly spreading Covid-19, that I got out of line and left. I don't plan to go back. My health is too important. read more
