I had to try this place when I heard about the Pickle sandwich. I am a HUGE pickle lover so this was a must try for me. I got an Italian sub on a Pickle and my husband got a cheese steak. They have A LOT of options for sandwiches and drinks. The prices were fair. We got 2 subs and 2 drinks for $29.00. The staff was friendly, informative and quick! There was always a steady flow of customers coming in and it was a small shop. The food was great, decent portion and hit the spot. I would definitely check this place out again and would recommend. read more

Sweet little shop-imagine a sandwich deli in an enclosed alley. Terrific sandwiches, fair pricing, tasty tuna salad (I'm picky), genial staff. Typical downtown Red Bank parking, but I'm often lucky (though the summer street Broad Street closure sucks big-time)! read more

Won't change the review but I really was thrown by the pickle sub. For some reason thought it was just another name for a hoagie. Did not really think it meant a cold cuts on a pickle (not bread). Wasn't my thing. Wearing a mask made it hard to communicate and the fact I couldn't see them actually using a large pickle for bread. Great for bread subs. But a pickle sub? To each their own I guess lol. read more

I am surrounded by places that sell subs. I use that term loosely because no one knows how to make a sub. I used to go to Elsie's a lot many years ago but stopped because the parking situation is awful and it's a bit of a drive for me. I was in the area today and I got a spot. They never disappoint. Finally an excellent sub. I ask for extra o&v and they actually did it. Anywhere else they never do it. Paper thin finely shredded lettuce. No huge chunks of lettuce which is so unappetizing. How on earth have I not reviewed Elsie's subs before?! Even though I live in Florida now, Elsie's is a must visit for me any time I'm in NJ. Their Turkey cranberry is just absolutely perfect. Bread is perfect, ratio of meat to toppings is perfect - even the hole in the wall look of the restaurant is perfect! They also have a great selection of chips and drinks to go with their wide menu of subs. It is a cash only place and you generally will have to park in the large paid city parking lot behind the store. But seriously - if you are anywhere near Red Bank, go out of your way to stop in at Elsie's. read more

I've been passing this place for too long and I finally stopped here for a sandwich. Everyone ALWAYS tells me how good it is here and they were not wrong. The Reuben was delicious! I'm definitely coming back for a regular sub and a pickle sub for certain.... You should too. The staff is super friendly and good at their jobs. My bf surprised me and took me here because he saw they made pickle sandwiches and I looooove pickles. Such a great, welcoming shop. I got salami and provolone on a pickle and it was the right amount of everything. The crunchiness of the pickle made it so much better! It's not as filling as a regular sandwich and it can get a little messy but I loved it nonetheless. Would highly recommend! Their subs looked amazing as well. read more

I must've ate my first Elsie's sub in the early 70s. In the decades since, no sub, grinder, or hoagie has ever come close to the awesomeness of Elsie's. Bread that's the right mix of fluffy and chewy, meat and veggies spilling out the sides, that hot pepper relish-y stuff... It's the standard by which all others must be judged. read more

Wow! What a delicious sub. I just had it about 20 minutes ago and had to review. First off, I live about 30 minutes away and was in Monmouth county to take my dog to the vet. My mom and I were in the mood for a sandwich so I did a quick google search to find Elsie's sub shop. I called to place and order and picked it up. The lady at the store was so pleasant and asked about my New Year. My total came out to $17.37 and I only had $15 cash so I was going to put the soda I had back, but she told me just to take it. So nice. Besides from the pleasant service, the sandwich was delicious. I got a turkey and provolone sandwich (my usual), and it was 10/10. The bread was so soft and the sandwich wasn't soggy from the oil and vinegar. Will definitely be back if I'm in the area. read more

In the mid-60's my mother would take me for a sub before my braces were tightened. In those days we would have sore teeth for a day or so after. Elsie's is a classic Red Bank establishment. Everything is fresh and delicious. It's a small hole in the wall on Monmouth Street with just a few tables and it gets very busy at lunchtime. I got a half of the Italian with Capicola and Provolone, lettuce, oil & vinegar and pickles. It was awesome and everything is made to order. Best sub shop in Red Bank. read more

This is as old school as old school gets. I remember it as a spot where RBC kids hid and smoked. Hippies hanging out. My baby sitter Diane took me there for lunch, and I'm 55! Tons of choices with the classic order by number system. As my friend Dennis says " it's all about the bread" and the Italian bread is super fresh. I have to put in my support. This place was a childhood favorite of my boyfriends and when he introduced me I understood ! We travel up from Barnegat to get these subs ! It's always a great experience but today was above that. It's Valentine's Day and I wanted to bring my boyfriend out favorite since he had to work. I walked in and didn't realize they had already closed for the day since it's Sunday. The owner still took my order and served me when I would have totally understood that I came in after hours. And also gave me a rose for Valentine's Day. Customer service is extremely above and beyond here plus they just make the best subs out there. This is the one of the BEST Jersey Shore Sub Shops you could ever visit. This little shop is tucked away on Monmouth Street in Red Bank, near the Count Basie Theater. They make every thing fresh & to order. I ordered a platter for a party & it was a hit!! The egg salad is made to order, the lettuce is so crispy the bread tastes like it just came out of the oven. They even do sub in a tub, the carb free option!! So easy to eat on the go or in the park with it being packed in a convenient sandwich bag. They have about 50 choices for subs!!! Hands down a great little sub shop !!! Happened to stumbling in while walking by and was pleasantly surprised ! Its excatly what a sub shop should be ! They have just about any sandwich combo you could want, including the good old classics. Sub was well made. More than enough meat without over stuffing and making messy sandwich. Great subs, great service. I visit regularly, and the friendly staff always kids me that in spite of the extensive menu, I always stick with a couple of favorites. Bread is delivered fresh every day. There are lots of drinks, sides and desserts to choose from as well. Elsie's is well worth a visit if you're in Red Bank. read more

We showed up hoping to snag bar seats, but it was busy and honestly a little warm for my liking. I know, I know, after the winter we've had, I have absolutely no right to complain. Either way, we ended up in an outside room with all the windows open to the patio and it was genuinely perfect. Our server Julie was fantastic. Attentive in all the right ways, including the kind of attentive where she noticed us glancing around and came over to check on us. We weren't actually looking for anything; we were just scoping out the space. Still, I appreciated the hustle. My partner ordered a gin martini, extra dirty; I went with a prosecco. Both came out cold and fast. We ordered edamame, lotus buns, the pear and crispy goat cheese salad, and the aburi roll. The edamame were solid. Nice pop of lime, though I could have used a heavier hand with the salt. The lotus buns were a revelation. Two pillowy bao buns, each stuffed with a generous slab of slow roasted pork belly glazed in hoisin, with a pickled cucumber tucked in alongside it. I'd never had anything quite like them, and the balance was what got me: the brine and snap of the pickle cutting right through the sweetness of that glaze. Really well thought out. The aburi roll was tasty; nothing jumped out as the star moment, but everything played nicely together and it went down easy. And then there was the salad. Oh, the salad. I could eat that salad every single day of the week. Crispy fried goat cheese medallions on a salad is basically a guaranteed order for me, so that's what reeled me in initially. But once I actually started eating it, I forgot all about the goat cheese. Mixed greens, thin pear slices, halved grapes, spiced pecan halves, all dressed in a honey mustard vinaigrette that was genuinely outstanding. I've already started thinking about how to recreate it at home, which is the highest compliment I can give a salad. Teak delivered across the board. Don't let the rooftop reviews scare you off from the restaurant itself.
