I always drove by this place omw to work and finally decided to check it out, and GOD DAMN I've just discovered my new favorite coffee shop!! I met two of the employees (Drea and Kim) and they were so fun and bubbly. They had loads of inside jokes and stories to share, and they were also good about transitioning me into it that I ended up feeling like part of the squad. During this convo, one of their regulars walked in and she joined the fun. She and I ended up sitting together, chatting for an hour (with someone who was a complete stranger!!), then added each other on fb. Now we're meeting up this Saturday for a quick coffee before we hit downtown for Fiesta. I swung by again today and it was the same baristas as before, and Drea remembered me and my damn drink. I had only come in once before! It made me feel like all the social and fun energy wasn't just customer service and I wasn't just another customer. I never really cared much for that before but now that I've been made to feel recognized and liked, well... now I feel spoiled! Then Kim started telling me about her fiesta medals, which were the coolest! I've been to a bunch of the coffee shops (Local, Press, Indy, etc) but I've never felt more at home than here. For those of us who need to be in the medical center, it's pretty obvious that a particular chain has taken over this area with their gangst' status. Luckily a street down from the prominent coffee shop is this lovely coffee joint. Located in a shopping center adjacent to San Antonio Burger Co., this place can be easy to look over. Keep your eyes out for the sign facing the street and you'll spot it. Upon entering this coffee house you'll begin to notice the homey feel (is that even a word) with a plush hangout area towards the back. If you're wanting a bar stool sit down look towards your immediate right and you'll see not only the set up but an electrical cord multi-outlet. The teas are ok as they use pre-made tea bags but the main focus here is the coffee. read more

Ordered a latte - baseline test. Milk wasn't prepared correctly. Espresso had a slightly bitter component to it. Latte was served in a Styrofoam cup - wtf. I expected more from this place when I saw the coffee bean bags laying around the floor as decorations; I actually thought (for a second) they were serious about coffee. I also thought the nice pictures on the wall were from their expeditions to the coffee farms..etc. But nope, they're from a trip to Bosnia. We came to this lovely coffee shop because we pass it all the time and we were finally able to try it on a Saturday morning. We were welcomed by great staff and they took our order swiftly. We ordered a caramel latte and a dirty chi. They were pretty busy but we still got our drinks in a timely fashion. We were very pleasantly surprised on how great our drinks were. The location is cozy but small. What made this trip very special for us was meeting Jose Luis. He comes there every Saturday to roast their amazing coffee. He stopped by our table and took the time to tell us how he roasts the coffee. He was just so kind and so passionate about his craft. It's a coffee shop right? So I'll start off by saying the coffee is great. But that's not why I am writing this review. My family has been enjoying Mildfire for YEARS but I have never left a review...until now. Today, while enjoying a cup I witnessed an amazing interaction between a customer and and the barista. The customer was an elderly gentleman who was a disabled veteran using a walker. Anyway, the barista appeared to know the customer and purchased his cup of coffee and thanked him for his service to his country. Her "thanks" was absolutely genuine and heartfelt. THEN...the barista helped this gentleman to his car, putting his coffee in his cup holder. That's service! read more

Great local coffee shop! They had list of perfect summer drinks and I chose the Japanese iced coffee from that list. I also had their bacon and egg breakfast taco with some of the green salsa. Everything was prefect! The coffee was light and refreshing, exactly what I was looking for and what the barista told me it would be like. I wanted to check out this small coffee shop after seeing it listed in the article "25 Coffee Shops You Should Visit in San Antonio That Aren't Starbucks" and it did not disappoint. This is quite a small coffee shop that could probably seat 20 people max. They have a few armchairs, couches and about 5 tables that seat 2 people. The first thing that I noticed is that the menu is quite extensive. I enjoy how they have traditional drinks such as pour over coffees and cold brews, while offering unique signature drinks like their frozen Red Bull and Spicy Aztec Mocha. I got the Frozen Mocha with Almond Milk and wow it was strong and sweet at the same time. I'm not sure what kind of almond milk they used, but I actually didn't mind it. I usually dislike using almond milk in drinks since I think it adds a waxy plastic flavor, but this one was completely different. The nuttiness of the almond milk actually complemented the rich roasted flavor of the coffee. Their coffee actually tasted like it was roasted under an open flame, similar to fire-roasted coffee offered by Summer Moon Coffee Bar. Overall very nice coffee shop! Most people just come in and get their drinks to go, so this can be a great place to do work or study. There's plenty of parking since it's in a medium sized center. Only thing is I would probably eat prior to coming here since there's not a lot of food options available. They occasionally have food items like pastries and tacos for sale. If you enjoy their coffee you can also purchase their beans which is roasted on the spot. (They can also grind up the beans for you if you wish.) The baristas were very friendly and open to answer any questions that you may have. I overheard them talking about the process of making their coffee and it is truly evident that they do hold a lot a pride and love for their coffee. I always enjoy supporting small coffee business since they put a lot of work in the craft and it usually shows when the taste of their drinks are out of this world . I have been back to Mildfire for a few more lattes and have to say that I was mostly pleased and have been increasingly pleased lately. I enjoy the lattes, appreciate the kind and efficient staff and look forward to the new photography on the walls. Parking can be a hassle do to the tight and limited spots, all the more reason to ride a bike to this neat little coffee shop nestled next to a Dominoes and local dry cleaner. There is limited outdoor seating if you want to enjoy the fresh air or you can sit inside toward the front or the back. Mainly though, my coffee is ordered to-go. Started my Small Biz Saturday by finding some local coffee in the neighborhood- literally. Hidden at the back of Churchill Estates off of Huebner road next door to Dominos and Oak Haven Massage. We grabbed an iced almond milk latte : the almond milk was pretty potent- unlike any almond milk I have ever had; also grabbed an iced coffee plain. We ended up blending the two drinks for a more balanced flavor but enjoyed both singularly too. read more

Used to love to go to this place for great local coffee. Hadn't been there in a while and stopped by around 10:30am on a Saturday. There was no wait to order, but after more than 10 min, my drink still wasn't ready. There were 3 people behind the bar, but only one really working on the drinks, and she was not moving very quickly. This has never been a place to go to a rush but the people that used to work here were efficient and capable. I had time to look around, and the place just didn't look organized and innovative like it used to. It was going to be another 5 min or so when I asked, and I had to go to work so I got a refund and left. Disappointed that things had really gone down here. read more

I consider myself to be knowledgeable about coffee. I also usually buy my beans from Starbucks. I do this because even though the beans were probably roasted a few months before my purchase, the vacuum seal keeps them fresh for quite a while, so long as they aren't ground. That said, I think I'm going to be buying my beans from Wildfire from now on for several reasons: The first is the benefit of knowing exactly where your beans came from and when they were roasted. My visit to Wildfire produced beans that were roasted on that very day. The second, the beans are cheaper than what I normally get at Starbucks, which confuses me, but I'm not going to complain. You also the benefit of supporting local business and not giant corporations, if that's your thing. There's no doubt that these folks know their coffee. They even brew it well, too, with my black coffee boasting a wonderful aroma and full flavor that you only get by using the recommended two tablespoons of grounds per six ounces of coffee. The beans may be only moderately better than what you may find at Starbucks, but the coffee is leaps and bounds over the chain. The desserts look a hell of a lot better, too. read more

I can't, in good conscience, give this place anymore than two stars. Sorry, Mildfire... Came here because it was centrally located for me and a couple friends I was supposed to meet. Order the coffee of the day since (1) I wanted to judge the quality of their in-house roasted coffee and (2) their espresso machine was (temporarily) broken. What I ended up experiencing was over roasted coffee of a average ilk. Overall, they need to (1) double down on their green bean purchases and spend more on more expensive beans, (2) train their folks better in coffee prep, and (3) stop serving gimmicky drinks. All in all, this place reminds me of a non-descript coffee shop near some random military base in suburban Virginia (or anywhere else). I will not be back, unless utterly necessary. Still not a one star place, but pretty dang close. Too bad too, because I think it could be pretty good with some very simple changes. read more

I learned so much about roasting, and different beans from the amazing and sweet master roaster Jose Luis! He even let me watch the whole process and had such passion about his job when explaining it all to me. He took the time to introduce me to the owner as well. Very impressed and sad at the same time. This place is great first off. Not far from me so that is a bonus. Walking in the staff greeted me and my buddy with smiles. Clean, not tacky and without thousands of branded crap all over the walls and floor trying to get your last dollar. The menu is simple, clean, precise with some recommended drinks which I went for. The first thing I was happy with is that I was served in a glass cup, clean and nice. BODUM. The beverage was perk-fect. Stayed hot till I was done. Sat outside and had a great conversation with my friend whom just graduated from college. I will definitely be back here more often. Sadly, this place has been open for a long time and I just found it. Wish I knew of it sooner. Get away from the Marketed taste of Charbucks and try Mildfire. Just better. read more

I have huge respect for a private coffee shop that would roast its own beans. It is real, rootsy, and authentic... and it tastes damn good. My wife and I stepped into the narrow storefront painted in bright yellows and reds, and scanned the menu. Being an esspresso junkie, I had the Emily's Slegehammer, 4 shots, with sweetened condensed milk, over lots of ice. Whew! My wife had a small mocha. Scanning over the standard coffee house chalkboard, I saw the specialty Valentines drinks. I give big points to a shop that has creative specialty drinks, and bucks the Starbucks status quo. Good stuff there. The Sledge was an interesting drink, the espresso heavy and woody, dark and deep. I missed the caramel tones of other blends, but the difference was unique and great for a change. The mocha was beautifully done, in an orange mug, with a leaf design in the foamed milk, and sprinkled with coco powder. Again, the signature woody taste to the esspreso, and the chocolate was dark and organic, but not bitter. Wonderful. As the barista/server brought us our drinks, I realized the downside to Wildfire. Nowhere to sit. The narrow building gave very few places to site, and those that were there were jammed close in to maximize seating. My 17' laptop had some serious problems unfolding. To sum up. I buy coffee beans here on a regular basis--love the Texas Blend--but they have lots of other varieties and Cup of Excellence beans, too. You know you are getting fresh coffee because the roast date is written on each bag, and fresher beans means better coffee. They also have teas and a range of coffee drinks (including press pots) as well as chocolates and other snacky items. The cafe isn't large, but it is comfortable and the owners are very helpful and friendly. And free wi-fi! read more

This place s right around the corner from were I work and i am extremely happy about it. Personally, I dont drink coffee at all but I do love their hot chocolate. Its so good! All my other coworkers love their coffee though. I also love that they have breakfast in the mornings. Basic breakfast (muffins, bagels, kolache, etc.) but good breakfast. I haven't tried any of their coffee drinks, but I DO buy their coffee beans and I am certainly satisfied! I've tried two different kinds, and both have made delicious espressos. The staff are always very nice and helpful, and willing to grind my beans for my espresso maker. (Although sometimes they grind them a little TOO well and my espresso maker doesn't like it...so make sure to mention that if you are wanting an espresso grind.) I do miss my Wichita, Kansas Spice Merchant coffee...but until I'm able to go back to get my fix, I will keep going back to Mildfire. read more

Locally owned is such a beautiful thing. I love buying drinks from here but even more I love buying whole roasted beans from Wildfire - especially the Texas Blend... I adore the fact that the owners care so much about what they are doing. In that respect, I'm reminded of Brown Coffee Co. of the Deco District in SA. The drinks are just shy of perfect and absolutely amazing, friends. The espresso is rich and dark and mixed with velvety steamed milk. Amazing. I'm a black coffee kind of girl and the selection here suits my style. I love that the daily brew changes often and is roasted in house. I'd enjoy seeing the cafe get some love. I love to support local businesses! Staff was nice. Got a hello from the old guy making specialty drinks. (The owner I think) Several people in there on a Thursday morning making"Coffee Shop Talk" but enough room for all. I got a "Regular" coffee black. They put it into a Styrofoam cup... with a weird black lid... Being from San Antonio it felt like I was at some CYO event. Why not just put it into a regular coffee cup? People at the office asked what I was drinking, but like "WTF are you drinking?" Coffee was HOT but kinda bland. It was the BOLD flavor of the day. It had subtle spicy flavors. I could see this being a really bold roast. Maybe not roasted dark enough or brewed right for my taste. I usually Pour over brew my own coffee but just wanted to try this place since it is right across from my office. I will give them a try again. This place has been near my house for years, and my recent interest in coffee finally gave me the push I needed to try it out. I had been to the same location years ago before the name change and had their hot chocolate and a brownie which were devine. Therefore, I am sad to be leaving such a poor review. I got a plain iced coffee with almond milk and my first sip I just thought the coffee was a little strong. However I realized that it was in fact a very bitter flavor because it was burnt. I'm not a picky person and wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt so I did my best to doctor it up when I got home but the burnt flavor couldn't be covered. They have other options such as smoothies which would make me willing to try it again but I'm not sure that I'd trust the coffee. read more

Kinda shocked I hadn't written a review for this place yet. I used to go here all the time and still drop in whenever I can. The owners are frequently in the shop serving customers themselves, which is great. The staff has interesting and quirky personalities for the most part--all fun in their own way. Mark (the husband owner) is a photographer too, so they print these awesome books of photos from the shop and of customers that come in each year. The drinks are good, especially if you like trying seasonal options. They always have a great drip coffees since the beans are roasted fresh in-house, and although the specialty drink menu can sometimes feel a little lacking, they are an interesting selection to say the least. Feel free to order what you want and they'll always do their best to oblige. My personal favorite drink is the Milky Way Mocha. The food goodies come from a bakery down the street that serves Mildfire coffee--nice exchange if you ask me! I don't get those often, but there is an apple turnover kind of thing that is SOOO good. At least you can pretend it's healthy. And naturally, they sell their beans both in shop and online. I highly suggest snagging some for home if you don't already have a local fave! ;) read more
