My doctor recommended Sundance Creek Post Acute in Banning, so I went online to do a little research. Sundance Creek did not have the greatest reviews but then again the other facilities in this category did not fair that well either. So Sundance it was! It is established that online reviews for rehab centers can be mostly negative and grim. I decided that since my stay went as well as it did, it was incumbent upon me to make sure that my positive experiences deserved to be shared with others so that there is hope for those who are seeking a facility that offers promise. Following is my takeaway: EXCEPTIONAL CARE: All of the CNAs and LVNs were caring, helpful, and even funny, but I have a special shout-out to Louis Obioha. He has a truly caring CNA heart. If you had any anxiety before his shift started, his calming presence, while very caringly addressing your needs, leaves you with an "all is well" feeling throughout the rest of his shift. MEDICATION CART: "Singing Danny", Karla and Vanessa (LVNs) brought their knowledge of all the medications that you should be taking along with much cheer to the daily med passes. EXPERT THERAPY: The physical therapy team is top-tier and abundant. Their knowledge and encouragement were the primary drivers of my recovery. FACILITY & COMFORT: The facility is "clean as a whistle" thanks to Mr. Longie, who is hard at work by 4:00 AM., who takes great pride in his clean and shiny floors! The housekeeping staff were very thorough with their daily sweeping, dusting and mopping of our rooms. My room was very clean and bright, the bed was comfortable, and my linens were changed daily. LEADERSHIP: The Director, Mr. Brett Kendrick, is an empathetic leader who ensures every patient's needs are met. He wears many hats. Organizer. Peacemaker. Overseer. Facilitator and is able to pick up the slack of others when necessary. He truly is the anchor of this facility. SOCIAL LIFE: From bingo and crafts to church services, there was always something to do in the activity center. My only minor gripe is the food. For the Love of Benji. Can nothing be done to make institutional food palatable? That said, I have to tell you that my choice to stay at Sundance Creek was the absolute correct decision to make. I do not regret the option that I chose. If you need skilled nursing and rehab, Sundance Creek is absolutely worth your consideration. I am including a few pictures of what happiness looks like.

What my family and I witnessed was not just disappointing, it was inexcusable! From the moment she was admitted, there were immediate red flags. Despite the presence of numerous staff members, basic standards of care were not met. My aunt was repeatedly left in soiled garments for extended periods, and critical medications were delayed or entirely missed. The neglect was not subtle....it was blatant. Angelica, who was assigned to her floor during several shifts, exhibited a level of indifference that was both shocking and dangerous. Rather than tending to my aunt's needs, she seemed more concerned with avoiding responsibility. On one occasion, I personally witnessed Angelica ignore multiple patient call lights, including my aunt's, for nearly an hour. Melissa, another staff member, displayed an alarming lack of compassion and professionalism. When asked direct questions about my aunt's care plan and physical therapy schedule, she responded dismissively and without any clear knowledge. It took over a week for any form of physical therapy to be initiated. And by then my aunt's mobility had severely deteriorated rapidly. Amanda's conduct was perhaps the most disturbing. She was observed speaking rudely to several patients and was especially careless during basic hygiene care. There were several days where my aunt was not bathed, and her wounds which should have been routinely cleaned and monitored were visibly worsening. Amanda never once acknowledged this or reported concerns, despite it being her direct responsibility. The facility itself was in disarray. It smelled strongly of urine and feces. Patients were heard crying out for help, and some were even seen wandering unattended. This is not a safe or healing environment. When I brought these issues up with the director of the facility, the social services director I met with passive indifference and redirected me to a case manager, Melinda, who seemed more interested in placating us as a family than taking action. Every conversation felt like a bother rather than genuine concern. To add insult to injury, when we decided to transfer my aunt to hospice care due to the rapid decline in her condition they still were completely unaware of what was going on and of her case. She was treated worse than a dog. There may have been a few nurses who tried their best, but isolated acts of kindness cannot undo the widespread and consistent negligence that led to my aunt's decline. This experience has been nothing short of traumatic for me and my family. I urge anyone considering this facility to think twice. The level of carelessness, unprofessionalism, and outright neglect we encountered has had lasting consequences. No one deserves to be treated this way especially not our vulnerable loved ones... there needs to be a better standard of code for this facility and they need to be held accountable for their actions! In other words if you have a family member in need of care I would steer clear from this facility. Hell you'd probably be better off taking care of them at home with no experience.

My brother was dropped never once did they return my 9 calls to explain how a bed bound patient feel. Really??? To finish off Ana from Admissions states she called at left two voicemail with a date to pick up my brother belongings. I never received a miss call or a voicemessage. I live 6 hours away. When I tried to pick up stuff they said it had to be Monday to Friday with arrangements. I didn't know. Anyways they have thrown my brother's belongings away. Wound care and respiratory technician are great but Admissions sucks!

Her room was nicely neat, it smelled fresh and she was happy. I got to sit with her during lunch and they served an amazing meal (with greens, cornbread, chicken and black eyed peas)! Wow! It smelled so wonderful it made me hungry too!! I had an opportunity to sit in on my great aunt in an activity. The interaction was so respectful and nice. The activity was crafting a necklace and the coordinator was so patient and helpful. Braswells give me a confident feeling that my great aunt is cared for properly. I would recommend this spot to anyone looking.

Right away I noticed the spaciousness of the dining room and these beautiful high chandeliers. I got to listen to a resident play the piano beautifully in the lounge. I was impressed with the courtyard in the middle of the building with an elegant stone waterfall. I got to meet the activities director and got an activities calendar. Immediately I knew this was the right place for my mom. So, I moved her in and I am happy to see her thriving and wanting for nothing. Just what I wanted for her senior years. What happened over the next several days was completely unacceptable. On his first day, he was not given a shower or an examination. His pain medication was not given in a timely manner and was sometimes hours late. Even worse, throughout his entire stay, no one came to assist him with using the restroom. For someone recovering from surgery and sent to a rehabilitation facility specifically because they need additional care and assistance, I find that absolutely inexcusable. I spoke with a supervisor, Jojo, about the problems with his pain medication and the lack of assistance. When I called my grandfather on August 12, the same problems were still happening, and he STILL had not started physical therapy. At this point, my grandfather was already fed up with the facility. I convinced him to give me an opportunity to go there myself and speak with staff in person before we made the decision to remove him. On August 13, I went to the facility and again spoke with Jojo because, quite frankly, she seemed like one of the only people there actually doing work. I specifically explained that my grandfather needed to start physical therapy, needed a shower, and needed his pain medication on time. She appeared surprised when I told her that he had received neither physical therapy nor a shower since arriving. I was assured these things would be addressed. While I was there, I was also extremely unimpressed with the condition of the grounds. The property looked dirty and poorly maintained, with dying plants and an overall neglected appearance. I learned that the property apparently used to be an orphanage, and unfortunately the entire place gave me the feeling of a place where forgotten people are sent and left behind. After watching how my grandfather was treated, that feeling only became stronger. On August 14, he FINALLY received a physical therapy session, three days after arriving. However, he still had not received a shower, still was not receiving assistance with the restroom, and was still having problems receiving his pain medication on time. I texted Jojo and told her that I would be removing him from the facility the following day. At that point I was no longer willing to keep giving the facility chances to provide the level of basic care that should have been happening from the beginning. Only after I complained again by text was he offered a shower, close to 6 p.m. He declined because of how late it was. His pain medication issues were also continuing. Once I made it clear that we were removing him, I suddenly began receiving calls from higher-ups. By then, it was too late. I had already raised these concerns repeatedly and had also contacted his insurance case manager. The final experience on August 15 made an already terrible situation even worse. My husband went to pick up my grandfather as we had already told the facility we were going to do. According to my husband, the head nurse (a tall woman with brown hair and glasses) yelled at him, berated and belittled him, and even accused him of stealing a wheelchair THAT WE BROUGHT WITH US. She then loudly talked about my husband to another nurse in the hallway. The behavior he described was shockingly unprofessional and completely inappropriate for someone working in healthcare. Maybe she was possessed by a ghost of one of the bratty children from the orphanage. I was later told that she behaved this way because we were taking my grandfather out against medical advice. That does not excuse her behavior whatsoever. If the facility was so concerned about his medical well-being, that concern should have been demonstrated through timely medication, assistance with basic needs, hygiene, rehabilitation, and attentive care from DAY ONE. You cannot repeatedly fail to meet someone's needs and then suddenly act outraged when their family decides enough is enough. What makes this even more frustrating is that this nurse reportedly claimed she did not know about my grandfather's condition, yet suddenly had plenty to say and had plenty of questions when we were removing him. My husband asked when my grandfather had last received his pain medication and was not given an answer. He also requested aftercare paperwork and was not provided with it. Thankfully, my grandfather's case manager through his insurance helped us get everything sorted out afterward. We gave this facility multiple opportunities to correct these problems. We spoke with staff, raised concerns repeatedly, went there in person, followed up again, and involved his case manager. Removing him was not some impulsive decision. It happened after several days of watching the same basic care issues continue despite repeated complaints and assurances that they would be addressed.

It's very upsetting to not get through to nursing staff or doctors for updates. My grandma has dementia and we just want to see how she is doing and try to coordinate care/ determine placement based on her individual needs. The bathrooms were gross. Smelled like urine. The facility is not horrible, but it could be cleaner. The care seemed fine, from what I was able to observe while visiting. My grandma ate breakfast, which consisted of eggs, toast, a fruit and oatmeal. It looks like they have scheduled groups/ classes for residents. That is great. The residents were so sweet. My grandma has made some friends, which makes me happy. The facility is not very big. They do have an outdoor area for residents to walk around. That's nice.

There may always be a few ups and downs at a care center but things are resolved to satisfaction if…read morethat does happen. The front office peeps do a great job. The care staff first rate!
