Went on a Saturday in August - a friend and I had visited the winery across the street and popped in for a late lunch! I ordered the Caesar salad and fries, she had ordered a chicken sandwich and fries. Decent portions for the price too. My friend's sandwich did some with nothing on it - it was just the grilled chicken and bread which was a bit odd... Service was good - nothing special and it did take a while to get our check. He is mainly the reason this place got four stars and not three! We got more service from him than our female waitress as he stopped by the table a few times and followed up with us ladies to make sure all was good and make us more drinks. The food was just okay--I got Fettuccini Alfredo and it was bland----I would not order that again--I will probably just stick to a basic chicken sandwich or something most places have. Traveling through on our way to Rochester and stopped in Cannon Falls for lunch. Picked Mill Street Tavern randomly and what a surprise. I had their Rueben and my wife had their fish sandwich. It was one of the best Ruebens I've had, and I've had a lot of ruebens. Corn Beef piled high, just the right amount of kraut, toasted perfectly. They also provided extra Thousand Island dressing on the side. The fish sandwich was very tasty, served on a soft bun with plenty of tartar sauce. We had our food to go, but the tavern on the inside was warm and welcoming. We'll definitely stop by again. read more

This is a cozy little place that you can grab a beer or glass of wine and some grub. We had a whiskey burger and a french dip. Both of them were good. The service is friendly and attentive. It is a cute little place with a nice decor and and they have a spacious patio to enjoy in the good weather months. If you are outdoorsy or had too much to drink, there is the nearby Cannon River Trail that you can stroll on for miles if you wish. I like the small town of cannon falls, they have good pizza, wineries and outdoorsy things to do. Cute town, check it out! Maybe I will see you there. read more

Deja Vu My wife has been trying to get me to stop here for the last year or so. Today I relented. As we walked up to the place I was a bit taken aback. "Wait, I've eaten here before!". Several years ago on a convoluted B&B tour of southern Minnesota. Mill Street is located in downtown Canon Falls, across the street from the winery. They serve a nice selection of burgers, sandwiches, and entrees. They also have a couple of craft beers on tap. Surly Furious for me today. I got the Whiskey Burger and my wife got the Blue Cheese Burger. Both had great flavor. This is one of the few whiskey sauces I have really liked. That burger was good, really good. We went to Cannon Falls today and decided to give this spot a try. There were 5 of us, the place was relatively busy as it was lunch time but the issue is they only have a couple of tables that sit more than 4, so if you have a big group, you would need to go at an off time or not sit together. I'm not sure if they take reservations, but if you were going with a big group, it would be worth checking that point. We ordered a French dip (pretty good, the au jus was tasty); a fish sandwich -- super flakey, looked good, tasty homemade tarter sauce; salad with homemade cilantro ranch dressing which was tasty!; sandwich and salad--good choices. The had half sandwich and salad or half sandwich and soup - a lot of places don't have that anymore, but it so nice to have a choice of two lighter things instead of having to order so much food. The French fries are coated and then fried, they looked better than they tasted - they got cold fast, like by the time they arrived at the table, so not sure if that was just the fact that it was really cold today or if they leave them sit around the kitchen. We also had onion rings, they were really good. I was going to have the crispy chicken sandwich because it sounded very appealing, but it was just a frozen breaded chicken breast they fry...doesn't anyone start with fresh chicken?? The service was a big on the slow side and didn't check back often enough for beverage refills... The most memorable part of the visit was the "apartment for rent" sign on a door inside of the women's restroom. The door leads to stairs. So if you rent the apartment, do you go in and out through the women's restroom? It was quite the oddity... read more

No idea why this place gets the ratings it does. (Likely by locals pumping up their hometown hangout) Ambiance seemed good - hence a half star, beer was cold, another half star. Food was gross. Soup was right out of a frozen bag and heated up. Steak bites appetizer was tiny tidbits of rubber on a small 6" saucer with a dipping sauce in the middle. (Note to Mill Street- stop serving that appetizer, it's a joke.) Mill Street Melt was bland. And regular burger -served on day-old bun-was grey if you know what I mean (lesson: beware of places that don't ask how you'd like it done). from the moment we walked in the door on a Saturday afternoon, we were greeted by a waiter named Javier... he was the rudest person I've ever encountered in a restaurant. very cocky and full of himself, making inappropriate comments to our group of women. we ordered drinks, they came without incident. one of our group only had one beer. we ordered ... food came.. the Cajun chicken salad came without chicken. how do you miss that when you're delivering it to the table???? the person having just one beer had to leave so I told Javier to put it on my tab.... he did not. he gave me two separate tabs... one for four dollars (beer) and mine for $18.24. now, working in finance, I can add that together this is $22.24. I gave him $40.24 and asked for the change as I would calculate the tip. he brings me back, not $18.00, but $17and some odd change when I said the two bills totaled $22.24 together he got very belligerent and said you can see the math right there and walked away ... he had made a NEW bill with them together on one tab and it was more money. WTH??? and had the balls to make me out to be the one who can't add? wow, not sure how they can make two bills more by adding them together but Javier did it. won't be going there again. between his rude comments and condescending flattery... he lost our business read more

Myself and 2 friends were visiting the opening of a new boutique in town which we drove 100 miles to Cannon Falls. As we left we asked the owner where a good place to eat was, she suggested the Mill Street Tavern. When we arrived the place was busy as it was the dinner hour. We looked for a sign that stated wait to be seated, as there was none we noticed a table which had some dishes left on it so we sat down. a few minutes later a waitress came to our table and told us that it was poor etiquette to sit at a table that was not cleared off. She just kept on telling us how it was poor restaurant etiquette to sit at a table that was not cleaned off. The tables next to us could hear her. She made us feel so uncomfortable we left. I am 72 years old and i have never been treated so poorly by waitstaff. We then went to Northfield and had a wonderful dinner at the Reunion restaurant. My husband and I were staying in Cannon Falls and planning on going out for dinner/drinks with friends. Our friend said he made a reservation for the group. Turns out they don't really 'do' reservations, so there wasn't a table large enough for our group. We had to sit in the overflow room, where we were told there wasn't a wait staff. We were disappointed because we hadn't eaten dinner... Someone in our group knew someone who worked there, so they did actually end up serving us food then (the bartender came over to take our orders for food). The food was good- we had steak, mashed potatoes, and soup. The steak was actually very tasty (no need for steak sauce) and the soup was great. Unfortunately, we felt like we were treated as if they didn't really want us there and didn't want us to order, so we felt pretty insulted. Even from early on in the evening, we just got a vibe that the bartenders didn't really want to serve us or want us there. (We never got to interact with any wait staff, as we weren't given any...) We were originally ready to stay until close and have a good time, but with the attitudes what they were, it was obvious that wasn't going to happen. A welcoming atmosphere could really make this place a wonderful bar to hang out at. It looks really nice in there, it is comfortable, and the food is great. We just expect to be treated with more hospitality when we go out, especially if we are dropping a large amount of money. You shouldn't have to 'know' someone to get good service. After a 30 miles bike ride on the Cannon Valley Trail, Lindsey D., Beth J. and I were successfully lured into Mill Street Tavern by Lindsey's parents. Who knew that food and beer would trump a run after a bike ride, hence the light "training" on the duathlon. The table had: - fish tacos, served with 3 tacos and generic salsa and chips. - a few soup and sandwich combos - I had the steak wrap with potato chips. I thoroughly enjoyed my wrap, medium rare tender steak with sauteed green and red peppers, onions and cheese. It seemed like the restaurant had a standard policy of always putting sauces on the sides so that was nice to hear for the smokey chipotle mayo. The place was busy at 2 pm though with two waitresses it wasn't an unbearable wait (this is located across the street from the winery store). The set up inside, long and narrow space but they had a banquet hall area that wasn't being utilized to the side. Stopped here for a quick lunch while driving through to stop at the winery across the street. They had a good variety on beers especially local. The food was quick and delicious. We ordered to share the chicken Caesar flat bread which they had split for us when it came out. The Caesar dressing was nice and light and the chicken was fresh and moist. My honey and I went down to Cannon Falls to look at some awesome barns and decided to go into town to try out the local fare. The tavern has been updated meticulously and looks fabulous - it was clean and the server was fabulous... I had the french dip and fries and loved it. The bread was soft but chewy and the roast beef was delicious. My honey got the Hickory Burger and said it was one of the best BBQ burgers he's ever had. We will definitely be back soon! read more

Definitely a superior place to eat compared to most bars. I had the Buffalo chicken sandwich, which was pretty good. The tap beer selection was limited but they did have Surly on tap which was nice. The service was fast and friendly. The place was clean, well lit, and warm. I would go back, and even might make a special trip even though I live about 30 miles away. read more

Update on 11/16/13: went here out of hungry desperation and was pleased with the fare. We got the beer and cheese soup, the French dip sandwich and the fish sandwich. The soup was far and away the best thing we ordered, followed by the fish sandwich and onion rings. The French dip was ok. Overall I was happy to be impressed by a place that once disappointed me in the past. ------------------------------ Ate here three nights in a row since the only other options in Cannon Falls are pizza, some more pizza or a dive bar. Great: The female server who took care of us when our primary server had forgotten about us. Also, the buffalo wings and Reuben sandwich! One of the best Reuben's I've ever eaten. Good: Its environment and feel. It's not like your BWW with giant flatscreen TVs blaring at you with 10 different channels on at the same time. Two TV screens, lots of decorative and fun signage, tables that are clean and chairs comfy enough to sit in for hours. The noise level is low enough to be able to converse in. Spinach salad with grilled chicken = delish! Bahh...noes: Anything with seafood in it, especially the Joe's Whiskey Salmon and Po' Boy sandwich. Po' boy sandwich = hot dog bun-like hoagie with 6 shrimp in it. Yay. What made that plate even more disappointing was the mixed vegetables I asked for had leaked water on the plate, making the bottom half of the "hoagie" have the texture of a disintegrating wet kitchen sponge that stuck to your fingers. Adding shrimp to your salad is $4 extra...for 4 shrimp. It was sad. With the exception of one server mentioned above, the other servers were kind of lousy. How many small towns can support a bar that features live acoustic music many nights? This place is a more upper class bar (read: music isn't blaring from a DJ like the other bars on a Saturday night), but had a great beer special when I was there in Bell's Oberon for $2.50. I do wish the bar was bigger, but they have a great staff and the manager and bartenders really work make everyone feel welcomed. Who would've thought there would be such a great place in Cannon Falls. Cannon Falls has such a neat and clean and tidy main street it looks like a movie set. Right in the middle of all this small town Americana is Mill Street Tavern. In an old building that was probably a mill on the cannon river the owners have made it feel rustic chic. What really impressed is the creative and fresh food and all the fresh faced staff. If you can sit outside on the huge covered patio and open deck do so. Perfect for any weather. We just finished one leg of the Cannon River Valley Bike trail and stopped in all sweaty so we locked up the bikes to a light pole and sat outside for an ice cold tap beer and some sandwiches. That really hit the spot. This is my 2nd visit and so far so good. We will stop there every time we do this awesome bike trail. read more

Stopped here to grab a bite for lunch after we rode bikes from red wing down the cannon valley trail. Close to the trail head, so excellent place to stop. The restaurant is in the middle of downtown in an old building but newly renovated. We sat at the bar and service was great. I had the lunch special, a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato soup. The sand which had 3 cheeses, bacon and tomatoes while the soup had lots of creamy flavor. My husband enjoyed he chicken pita with onion rings. A gem. I've been here a few times, now, and I always regret how long it takes me to come back. Most recently, we stopped in for dinner before a concert at Treasure Island. It was a Friday, so we had the Friday night all you can eat fish fry special and the Whiskey Burger. The fries are some of my favorite, and the fish and burger were also great. The food came fast and allowed us to get back on the road to the show. They were quick to bring us some more when we cleaned our plates. A great environment in an old mill building right on the river - get to the patio if you can! They are across the street from a local winery, and source wines from them. I was looking to try something new and local, so I went here two weeks ago. Going in, the building seemed nice and classy, but the decor clashed with the classy feel of the building and felt kind of misleading. Is this place supposed to be "classy" or "goofy"? It's hard to tell with all of the odd signs that mask the whole bar side of the place. I asked the waitress about the fish tacos, curious about the salmon. She exclaimed that they are their rather new and have become their best selling item in a short period. "Everyone loves them!", she said. So, I decided that I'd try them. I was so excited to try these 'different' fish tacos made with salmon and dug right in. The first bite was not quite what I expected.. The salmon was obviously from a can, so the base of this taco was ground up dry bits of pink meat. It would have been better if the food was prepared with some light mouth watering seasonings. However, it tasted as if it was doused with some heavy bold seasonings. This crossed with the dry canned meat over powered everything else in the dish. Figuring this is coming out of my pocket, I tried to douse the tacos with the salsa and ranch provided to mask the disappointingly extreme taste in my mouth, only to be let down. I also swung by another time and ordered a burger. This burger was called something like "spicy concarne", or something along those lines. The waiter explained that the burger comes with a 'plethora' of peppers and onions on top. In the mood for something spicy, I ordered it with the pepper jack cheese. When the burger arrived, I was greeted by this 'plethora' sitting on top of my burger. This was not quite what I was expecting. It was more like a ball of peppers squished into a patty form, dipped in batter and deep fried. That's great and all, but everything seemed to be under seasoned, and over cooked. Except for the fries. The fries were wonderful. They were very crispy on the outside and soft and hot on the inside with the perfect amount of salt. My recommendation would be, if you are in the area and insist on eating here, maybe just get a order of fries and a beer. read more
