First time here looking for a New Zealand type meatpie alternative. Read lots of good reviews about this place so finally made it out here. I liked the beef and potato empanada better than the chicken empanada, which was expected as I'm not a fan of shredded chicken. It was heated up for me. The crust was not flakey even after it cooled down which was a bit disappointing. Probably better to have eaten them unheated. Neither empanadas hit the spot for me, though. The milohas pastry was very sweet with the thick dulce de leche caramely looking topping. The guava finger was okay. The cheese arepa tasted was like salty cornbread with a hint of cheese. I thought it'd be like a pupusa. I prefer pupusas. The cassava bread thingy was just salty. Tasted like the arepa but more dry. Overall, the sampling of the items here was a one-and-done for me. They are pricey and a bit salty but otherwise they were fine. I ate them all. read more

I remember going here last year in 2020 because I was craving some empenadas. Then yelp recommended this place. I went and I ended up getting like four different things including an empenada. It was all very good. About a year has passed now and the craving for empenadas came back. So thus I ended up coming back here and what do you know I ended up getting even more stuff than last time and again all very good. They tamals are huge and delicious. I have not been to Colombia in over a decade. Being from Northern California, I have access to exceptional Mexican food but very little in the way of South American cuisine. This past weekend, I was introduced to Milohas. The minute I set foot in the bakery I felt almost transported to Bogota and the local Pan-Pa-Ya style bakery that are found readily throughout the city. The empanadas were super filling made more delicious with the dipping sauces. My favorite was the chicken empanada. Overall, I loved this place. It's a bit far from my house, but I'll at least stop by once a month to grab warm fresh pan de bono. You will not miss out and if you're Colombian like me, this is as good as it gets here in the Bay. read more

I wish Milohas was closer to where I live. I used to go often when I worked off Camden. Their beef empanadas are so good!! That sauce (I think it's call aji) is simple but amazing with the empanadas! I always ask for extra. But can someone please enlighten me on how to eat it with my empanada? I try to pour it on top with each bite like a burrito, but the chunks of deliciousness inside don't flow easily and stay behind in the little cup. I try dipping into it with a piece of empanada I break off, but it's a similar problem. I usually end up breaking the empanada in half and spooning the sauce onto it in rows as I eat. It's very messy, but I always eat it at home so it's not too embarrassing lol I like the milohas dessert (though it's a bit tough to fork off in pieces or bite off), cheese bread, and the juices (I believe this one is blackberry). I'm not too keen on the packaged dessert, so I'll skip that next time. They ran out of arepas this time, but the cheese arepa is especially tasty :) read more

When you smell of nice, good bread baked fresh from the oven first thing when you step inside of a bread store, you know you just found your favorite bakery! This is my go to bread store whenever I'm craving for their cheese bread (Pao de Queijo). I have never found any cheese ball/bread any delicious than theirs in Bay Area. Love their mushroom quinoa as well. The pastry is really crusty and flaky, they are quite generous with the amount of mushroom too. Another thing that I always reorder is their corn and cheese Arepa. Arepa is made from corn bread with cheese inside. Their finger sausage bread is quite big too. They use high quality of sausage. This is perfect for kids snack/lunchbox ideas. Their guava juice is also my favorite. The use real fruit instead from the juice box. The owners himself told me this fact last time I ordered their guava juice. My husband loves their passion fruit ice cream. While my favorite is their mango ice cream. They are so smooth and creamy, not too sweet for my liking. The hubby and I love Porto's and Milohas is clearly the closest Porto's alternative in the bay area. The little shop is located in a really strange plaza, surrounded by businesses that have clearly seen better days. The bakery itself isn't going to win any awards for decor, but at least the place was clean and organized. Milohas has a TON to offer, such as empanadas, breads, desserts, juices, coffees, and more. The service was friendly and we felt comfortable perusing the display case without feeling rushed. We tried a few of the cheese breads, many empanadas, and one of the apple pastries. The biggest caveat about Milohas is that none of pastries are warm, and we were surprised that the service wasn't offered. Perhaps if you dine in they'll warm it for you? The cheese breads are quite dense and have an interesting tangy undertone. If you like cheese, this will appease your taste buds. We definitely like the empanadas the most, especially the chicken, beef, and turkey. The proteins are shredded and flavored well. You can really taste the difference. The pastry is crispy (once toasted) and one empanada will keep you full for a long time. I especially love the apple pastry that is as delightful as it is delicious. The apples are soft and the cinnamon flavor is strong. In the battle of Milohas versus Porto's, I think we'll have to give it to Porto's. If you're looking for empanadas and in the area, look no further. These hand-made empanadas that are always served hot and fresh. During our last visit, we ordered the chicken and the Hawaiian. The outsides were nice and crispy and the fillings very tasty. They also give you a light oil-based sauce to drizzle. The menu also offers vegetarian dishes and other Columbian-baked goods. The space is small so we tend to take these to go and reheat at home. They are often busy so expect a line. With so many other versions, we'll be back to try them out. read more

This place has really bomb empenadas, authentic, pastry is flaky and buttery. I actually think their empenadas are better than Porto's. My favorites are the beef, beef and potato, ham and egg, and Hawaiian empenadas, cheese arepa, guava pandebono and Bunuelo. Flavorful and the salsa that comes with it is fresh and adds that extra bump in flavor. The guava pandebono is so yummy, great mix of the cheese and fresh guava. The Bunuelo texture is fluffy and great flavor of cheese, it's perfect little cheese ball. For me the sausage finger was just okay, the outside pastry is perfect flaky, but inside tasted just like a hot dog with American cheese. The pineapple empenada was a little too much pineapple for me, I like the Hawaiian with ham better, or the Apple empenada if I'm going for something sweet. With a couple minor changes, this place would go to five stars easily. The empanada crust is light & flakey and some of the best I've had. Filling to crust ratio is also great. We tried a few items on this first visit and here is the breakdown: Pros - that crust! - savory meat & veggie options, sweet options also - did not try the so will update once I do Cons - the sauces were lacking, the chimichurri was a big miss and was more like pico de gallo. The spicy sauce was lacking flavor and was not spicy. We needed more sauce; those really tiny containers are too small but we didn't love the sauces so maybe that's fine. - I would have loved meat options that contained something other than just meat or meat + potatoes. I would have loved beef + mushroom, perhaps turkey + a vegetable like spinach or anything really. The meat was good but the meat options did not have meat + vegetable options. The guava finger was a bit overly sweet so I would try apple & cinnamon next time or pineapple. Overall this place is worth a visit but the large beef empanada was crying out for some real chimichurri! Such small changes would elevate this place to the next level. Fix the sauces and put beef & mushroom on the menu and turkey maybe with cranberry or whatever. Meat alone is boring, especially without an herbaceous chimichurri. read more

Good food, worth coming back. The website menu, PDF menu, and online order menu are not exactly the same, so I decided to call ahed with my order to understand what was actually available. The staff was cheerful and helpful during the transaction. Thanks to a yelp review, I chose to pay over the phone to skip the line when I went to pick up. I ordered several kinds of empanadas (I love that they have variety), but when I got home, none of the boxes were labeled, so it was like playing "Empanada Surprise" or Forest Gump's box of of chocolates because there was no way of knowing what we were going to get. Good thing none of us had allergies or dietary restrictions, but half us were picky about the ones we wanted. The quality of the food was good. The dough is very buttery. The beef and potato empanada was pretty dense, so it is good for meat lovers; I wish there were more potato in it. The pizza one has a lot of pepperoni in it, which is nice. I placed an online order for pickup last Sunday. I didn't get the empanadas, sausage rolls or guava fingers warmed since we were taking them to a brunch later in the day but I wish I did and I like that they give that as an option. The vegetarian empanadas are very tasty and filling. Guava fingers are delicious and if you like a cheesy sausage, then the rolls are for you. I had these catered for my church and everyone loved them! My family and I love them too! When you order catering, the empanadas are smaller than the ones you'd purchase when you walk in. They are still a really good size though! The sauces that come with it are delicious too! If you like spicy sauces. don't forget to ask for their orange sauce! They gave me only a few of those, but glad I got some because i wouldn't have known about it! The young lady that helped me with my order was so kind and patient. I wish I remembered her name. She went out of her way to organize all empanadas in separate trays for the priests, nuns and two households and labeled them for me. Great menu but the results were meh. I got a spinach and cheese as well as a Hawaiian. The Hawaiian had maybe 3 thin slices of ham that took up about a fifth of the empanada and the other 4/5ths was a weird candied pineapple and cheese. I've had way better empanadas elsewhere. read more

I went in today because I had met the owner a couple of months ago. He was buying a ton of apples from Safeway, and not the cheap kind. The sweet delicious type. One word: empanadas! I was craving for some Columbia's pastries and decided to check this place out. With an almost hour commute (on a weekend) I was crossing my fingers and hoping that this place would be worth it. Thank God it was! We ordered several different empanadas but the ones we liked the best were the beef and egg! The flavors were on point and the flaky, buttery crust was soo good! It wasn't oily at all AND they give way more meat than other empanadas that we've had in the past! In fact, my toddler doesn't really care for any ground beef but he loved the beef empanadas and I don't blame him! He kept asking for more! Wish we bought more for him! The ground beef empanadas with potatoes are my favorite. I literally crave their maracuya juice every single day. Anything you try will be delicious, but definitely try those two items I just mentioned! Also, add the garnish they give you with the empanadas, it's heavenly. I won't bore you with the details of our conversation but if I don't curl my hair, it looks like someone slapped a Hawaiian straw skirt on my forehead (it's super damaged from 18 years of coloring). Getting to the point, as much as I love San Francisco for the vast amount of top-notch restaurants, bakeries, and bars, there's certain things we're missing that I wish we had. Like a Colombian bakery. Sure, there are a handful of places that sell empanadas but they're horribly overpriced and not good. I'm talking $6.50 for a palm sized one with phantom fillings. Milohas is a mom and pop Colombian bakery that sells empanadas (meat and vegetarian), arepas, and gluten-free breads made from corn and cassava flour, sweet pastries, ice cream, housemade juices, Colombian coffee, tea, and sodas (e.g. postobon manzana). Pastries range from $1.50 to $6.85 (meal sized empanadas). You can also get a combo meal with 2 empanadas, a salad, and guava finger pastry for $10.50 which sounds like a great deal. Cc's accepted. I've been wanting to go to Milohas for their empanadas. On my way to Carmel, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to stop by since San Jose is on the way but it ended up taking a 25 minute detour and back with no traffic (SW part of SJ). Obviously not their fault but if you're coming to Milohas, make it worth your while and stock up! You can easily warm up their baked goods in a toaster oven for the next day, or day after. The staff are incredibly warm and friendly. Order at the counter and they'll bring your order to you (if you're dining in). It was my first time there so I didn't know and I was waiting to the side of the register. Multiple staff asked if I needed help with a smile. Great energy and positive vibes all around. I also ordered their namesake dessert, Milhoja ($4.25) which is a puff pastry layers filled with pastry cream topped with dulce de leche (sorry no picture). I found the milhoja to be too sweet for my tastes but, I can see this being a favorite with sweet tooths. Seating is tight with just a handful of tables inside and two dog-friendly outdoor tables. We had to hover for a table outside. It looks like they have room outside to add two more tables. If Milohas was closer and easier to get to, I would be a regular. It's an excellent mom and pop bakery that has a lot of heart in both their pastries and their customer service.
