Staff is very kind. They explained the different types of plates that they have and helped me pick out a plate that I would enjoy. Everything is very clean. I just sad that there is no refills on coffee because the " cafe de olla "is really good. All in all 8/10 I need to come back to try the pastries.

First off, the guacamole was delicious. I love how fresh it tastes and how the onions and tomatoes are diced. The chicharron I ended up tossing because it tasted like it was either refried, or fried in old oil. We grabbed some pastries as well, which look good. We'd probably come back for guac and pastries.

On Wednesday 11/20/24 around 4pm my friend Melissa, her mother and father arrived to purchase Mexican Bread, 8 tacos, & watered down Horchata. When my friends mother brought asked to have it exchanged for another drink the worker refused to do so. It turned into a big scene where a male employee stepped in to ask what the issue was. The drink was exchanged for Agua Fresca. This is completely unacceptable behavior. I phoned for a manager and got no where with that. We'll be phoning again because no ones family should be treated in this manner ever. For some reason the staff answering the phone is saying that the manager/owner are unavailable and have no set schedule. The point of this is that it was by my recommendation that my friend and her family visited this location. My friends mother was taken there for a treat after months of wrestling with financial issues. This treatment is unacceptable.

This afternoon I went to buy some gelatin, and to my surprise, it's starting to get moldy. I hadn't noticed this before, since I only buy some occasionally, but this really caught my attention. How can I tell if I haven't already eaten moldy ones? You have to pay very close attention to what you buy because they don't even put expiration dates on them. How can you expect things to be there for a while, and they don't even check these important things, since it's food and you can get sick from eating expired and moldy things?

Super close to home so very convenient. In the same small plaza, there is also another taqueria few doors down; La Superior Taqueria is at the end to the right. I came on a Sunday and it was busy, there were people dining in and a small like of those ordering take out. I ordered a carne asada super burrito to-go. When I got home, I realized they also included some grilled onions, a pepper, slice of lime, and hot sauce - the grilled onions were really nice to eat with the burrito. Only con about this was the burrito wasn't wrapped tight enough so when I cut it in half, the carne asada meat started spilling out. Overall, the burrito was yummy and service was quick - I was in and out within 10 minutes. Definitely will be coming back when I'm craving some authentic Mexican food.

After eating here again a year later, service is still terrible. 30mins to make three tacos. Food is bland. What happened to this place ?

I was in the area and needed to pick up some food quickly and found this spot on Yelp and I am glad I did. This spot is legit. It was bustling with a lot of customers and a lot of employees as well. This is a panaderia and a restaurant. Everything looked yummy and it is clear that this is not a regular run-of-the-mill taqueria. They have good food and friendly employees and based on the crowd, a lot of folks agree. My quesadilla and carne asada tacos were very good.

I have been coming here for a few years now, I didn't mind the 40 minute drive from San Mateo. The food was worth the drive. My last couple of times here have not been the best, the customer service is horrible. I walked in today to four ladies talking behind the counter, they watched me with my pan dulce tray for a few minutes before one of them decided to ask if I needed help. I specially asked if the sugary pieces could go in a separate bag, but she was too busy talking to her co-workers that she didn't pay attention to what I was asking. The prices have also gone up by a lot. I had about 6 pieces and $12 something worth of chicharrón for $39. The chicharrones are also super high priced now, two pieces for almost $13. Today was the last time I made the drive, the pan was worth the drive before but with these prices and the horrible service is not worth my time or money

    Chicharrón tacos
    Jenevieve S.

Panadería and Taqueria combined is already a legendary mix... pero let me tell you. The salsas were delicious, the tacos were delicious, the chorizo burrito was delicious. This is a San Jose staple now.

    All for your pleasure.
    Sergio R.

I've been coming here for the last 4 days, everyday trying something different. Food is amazing and just by coincidence did I spot this place as I was driving after working, 1st stop I had a carnitas burrito and 10/10 2nd day I had Chile verde plate 10/10 3rd day I had the chicharrón plate 20/10 haven't had anything like this before. Today I'm going with the Chile relleno plate and had to add an extra Chile since I'm super hungry. Service is amazing and this place has a bakery as well for all those who like that pan dulce If you want to grab a sit and eat here is a little tight but the ambiance is amazing.

You don't get a cross-section like that everyday!

They're best known for their famous Burnt Almond Cake, though they also offer a variety of other pastries. Personally, I come here just for the cake. They sell it by the slice or cupcakes, and they also have whole cakes ready to go. If you're looking for a custom cake, though, be sure to place your order in advance. Whenever I'm in the area, I always stop by to pick up a few cakes to bring home for my family, but I can probably eat a whole cake to myself lol. Their prices are still surprisingly reasonable, which makes it even more worth the trip.

We ended up getting three burnt almond cake slices (2 vanilla 1 chocolate) and some brownies. The brownies were pretty good, balanced sweetness and chocolate flavor without being overwhelmingly sweet and I enjoyed the walnuts, but it was a very fudge like texture and I prefer my brownies to be slightly more cake-y and airy. If you like fudge brownies you'd like these. My issue was the burnt almond cake, both vanilla slices were on the dry side. The chocolate slice had a hint of chocolate otherwise tasted exactly the same. The almonds and cream were fine, I would've preferred stronger almond flavor. Was meh. Price is good at $5 for a hefty slice. If I'm in the area maybe I'd go back, otherwise it was about the same as a Safeway cake slice.

That said, they're constantly restocking, and the staff has a well-oiled system down. Even when it's busy, things move surprisingly efficiently. PASTRIES/BAKED GOODS: 9/10 I love their pastries and baked goods! I honestly haven't had anything that was a miss for me, whether it's savory or sweet. Everything I've tried has been delicious. FOOD/MEALS: 8/10 As for their meals, I thought they were good, but not quite as memorable as the pastries. I ordered the avocado toast, and while it was hearty and generously loaded, I felt like there was just a little too much going on. Both the salad and the toast were dressed a bit too heavily for my taste. COFFEE: 8/10 I also really enjoy their coffee. My go-to is the Latte Einspänner, and it pairs perfectly with their pastries. You can really taste the quality of the espresso, and I appreciate that it's not overly sweet. SERVICE: 9/10 The staff is quick, efficient, and constantly on the move. As I mentioned, they run like a well-oiled machine, even during the morning rush. AMBIANCE: 8/10 Seats fill up fast! If you're planning to dine in and you spot an open table, have someone in your group grab it while the other orders; tag-team it, lol. I also love the overall aesthetic. The wooden tables, sky blue and yellow color palette, and bright space make it feel warm and inviting. I was SOOOO sad and disappointed just by the appearance of them when arriving, they were all burnt! You can't tell me they are supposed to look like this because nowhere on their website or instagram to they advertise them with black tops. I purchase Pastel de Nata quite frequently from my local bakery in San Leandro and since we were finally in San Jose, I was SO excited at the opportunity to try new ones from this "popular bakery" and I'm confused on how these sell? I ordered 13 pastel de Nata (6 traditional & the remaining a mix of all the flavors they offer) I'd hope when packing my boxes they'd attempt to throw some in there that weren't burnt from the top but the pictures speak for themselves. The burnt top ruins the taste of the pastry itself. The filling to crust ratio isn't it. Needs more custard or a slightly thinner crust. Attaching photos for reference. We also arrived at 11am (1.5 hours after they opened) and there was literally only 1 malasada left, I'm so happy it happened to be dulce de leche which I wanted and purchased it. My husband, son, and I LOVED it! That's the reason for the 1 star (although I can't give less) I'd recommend they make more Malasadas and less Pastel de Nata to keep up with the demand, a couple families walked in after me and walked right out when they realized there weren't any in stock and they genuinely taste better then the Pastel de Nata, you can tell that's where the high ratings come from and why they are popular. Overall - would recommend 1000% skipping the pastel de Nata unfortunately it does not taste anything like the ones I've had before. Not a true reflection of what it should taste/look like. We made the drive super excited to finally come and try and ignore the reviews saying it wasn't the best just to confirm they were correct.

We walked into a cozy, compact space with shelves filled with freshly baked breads, pastries, and prepared foods, all arranged in a way that makes you want to browse slowly even though the shop is small. The atmosphere has that simple, welcoming feel reminiscent of the small bakeries you find throughout Japan, focusing more on quality and variety than on a large café setup. Seating is limited, so it is better suited for grabbing something to go rather than spending a long time inside. The biggest draw here is the combination of Japanese baked goods and savory items. The bakery selection offers a great mix of sweet and savory options, with classics like melon pan standing out for its crisp sugary topping and soft interior that stays light without being dry. The curry bread and croquette bread are also popular choices, both feeling comforting and freshly made rather than overly sweet or greasy. The bakery items are reasonably priced, which makes it easy to pick up multiple things without feeling like you are spending too much, and the variety means there is always something new to try. The onigiri selection is what really makes Clover stand out compared to a typical bakery. They offer a variety of rice balls with fillings like spicy tuna, tuna mayo, and unagi, making it a great option for a quick breakfast or light meal. The rice is well balanced and the fillings give each onigiri a different personality. The spicy tuna has a nice kick that comes through without overpowering the rice, while the unagi adds a sweeter, more savory flavor that works especially well with the slightly salty rice. The onigiri are a practical, satisfying choice for anyone looking for something more substantial than a pastry. Beyond the baked goods and onigiri, Clover also has drinks, sandwiches, and desserts including cakes and other pastries. The strawberry cake is a nice lighter dessert option, and the overall menu gives plenty of reasons to visit whether you are looking for breakfast, a snack, or something to bring home. The offerings feel thoughtfully selected, with enough variety to cover different cravings without making the menu feel scattered. Service is friendly and efficient, and the small size of the shop adds to the charm. Since it has become a popular local spot, some items can sell out during busy hours, so arriving earlier gives you the best selection. Parking can also be a little challenging during peak times, but the quick grab-and-go style makes the visit easy to manage. Clover Bakery & Cafe is a great stop for anyone who enjoys Japanese bakeries. The combination of fresh breads, affordable prices, and unique savory options like onigiri makes it feel different from a standard bakery. It is the type of place where it is worth picking up a few items and trying a mix of everything, leaving you with the sense that you have found a little neighborhood gem that delivers on both quality and variety.

Of course husband last minute says day of birthday celebration that we need a cake. Found Izumi…read moreCakes on Yelp and was bummed at first because the soonest online reservation for a cake would be two days later. Husband called them around 11am and they said they were in the middle of making their strawberry cakes so they could add our order in for a same day pickup at 4pm. Pickup went well and the cake was so cute and it tasted great! Like the Chinese bakery strawberry cream cake with a moist sponge cake; not too sweet, just right. Might sound basic but it was done very well. Would 100% recommend. I don't know prices for cakes nowadays but I didn't feel bad paying about $60 for a cute and tasty cake (6", strawberry cream cake). I wouldn't bank on same day pickups, I might've just been very lucky they were in the middle of making their cakes but it wouldn't hurt to try calling early in the day if you're in a pinch for a solid cake. I'm very thankful for their service!

This spot is takeout-only, so don't plan on stopping by for long. Finding parking isn't difficult…read morebut might take a minute on busy days, as it shares a parking lot with the rest of a popular plaza. The store itself is easy to find as well, with a clear label outside. Walking in, it looks half-closed--their cakes are all stored in a large refrigerator, with nothing in the case on the counter. There is a sign proclaiming "takeout only" in slight disarray, and the seating is pushed to the side. That said, the service is friendly and the employees are quick to help you and show you what they have in stock for takeout. I ordered the 4" Berry Berry Light Cake for a birthday, and they were able to write a birthday message on the cake board, which I really appreciated. The cake also tasted very light and the sweetness was subtle, which I really enjoyed. The berry flavor in the sponge was a little too subtle, though. My main concern is that the cake does not fully resemble the picture they advertised online. It is missing the freeze-dried berries on top, and the berry glaze did not reach as far down the cake as was shown in the photo. Because the berry glaze is the main source of the berry flavor, this was a little disappointing. Also, the cake was not finished when I came to pick up the cake (and I was ~5 minutes late). I'm uncertain if this is for freshness or if there is another reason. Overall, I like the spot for the fresh and light cake. It's pleasantly unique compared to your standard sheet cake, and everything is rather cute. However, it may be a better idea to buy the cakes in-person to be 100% sure of what it will look like, though daily stock is definitely more limited than if you place an order online. I hope they reopen their indoor seating soon.
