He takes about 15-20 mins per car and sends the certification straight to the DMV. Keep in mind, he doesn't do older cars so I would call to make sure but anytime in the 2000s should be good. Make sure your check engine light isn't on when coming because he'll have to check that out before giving you the passing certificate. Went yesterday and there was road construction closure so it looks like you can't get into the street but you have to turn and ask the vested road workers to open the cones to drive by. So far I heard the workers will be on the street for 13 more days I hope customers still come into this business even through road work. How it works is you go inside and put your license plate on a wait list and go wait in your car. When it's your turn he'll stop by your window and ask you to pull your car into the bay. He'll go down 1 by 1 and perform the smog check. There were 3 cars in front of me and it takes about 15min per car. So if you're pressed on time and need to figure out the timing, just give 15-20min per car. When he's working on your car you can fill out the paperwork. Quick work and was on my way. read more

The phone was answered promptly, and I thought that the employee was courteous and communicated well over the phone. Knowing that smog check stations are first come first serve, I specifically asked if there was a queue and how long the wait was. He told me over the phone that there was no one there at the time and assured that the smog check took 10 min. It looked like there was only one employee running the show, but he was fast and efficient. I dropped in around 11:45am and saw that there were two other customers ahead of me. The employee had just started working on one of the two cars when I arrived. The second customer in line couldn't wait and ended up leaving, so that boosted me up a spot. Between the first customer's and my car's smog check, I was out of that place in less than 30 minutes. I was concerned if he finishes to job and gives me unrealistic bill but it was my naivity. Thao was gathering all info to make up the estimate which he gets your sign before starting to work. True professional. Got the inspection done in less than 10 mins. Gave the certificate and sent it to DMV electronically. Accept credit card but I paid cash just to save the guy few cents. Thao is a solid shop owner. He's got a little place at the corner of the building, so be sure to enter the right side. He's got a great coupon discount, so be sure to mention that as well. He treated my car with a lot of respect, even complementing it. I could tell he was very careful opening and closing the door, so it doesn't hit anything. Well, there certainly was not! Told him I needed a smog check and he just asked for my keys. He pulled my car in, handed me the invoice to authorize the work, and started hooking things up. Because of a bluetooth OBDII adapter I installed, I tucked away the connector. He started wonder where it was and called me over. WHOOPS! No big deal, I took off a panel and got the connector for him to attach his scanner. While I thought it might have been a pretty slow day for him, just as he started working on my car, two more people showed up. This is typical, around $55 or $60 for pre-2000 vehicles. The owner complained that the price is high because of the type of machine he needed to do pre-2000 year vehicle readings. Why is that my problem? Well, I guess it is because I end up paying the higher price. If charging a premium, I could get it done at a local smog station/gas station that is blocks from my home instead of driving further to this place. I found a place called South Bay Smog off Montague, near Great Mall Pkwy/Main St., in San Jose that is less expensive and a relative of my mechanic at Abbott Auto Service off Main St. in Milpitas. The past two times that I needed my smog check, I came to this location based on the yelp reviews. The guy there did not talk a lot, but he was efficient and knows what he is doing. The first time there I went in the morning on my day off, so I was in and out real quick. I had my document with me. He did all the checks for my vehicle. He charged me 40 bucks and I was on my way. It was an easy experience. Needless to say, I was a fan. This second time was similar. I came by after work, and it was during lunch time (After 12pm). There was a line of 3-4 people ahead of me. I did not have anything pressing to do afterwards, so I was prepared to wait. He got to me in 30 minutes and was out the door in 40-45 mins in total! I think that was a pretty quick service considering there was a small line. While I was waiting for my car to pass smog, I got nervous. For whatever reason, my mind thought that there would be a chance that I will not pass smog. My car is getting older and is racking more miles. I read the poster on the wall that there was a free retest if you don't pass, as long as your vehicle is newer than 1996. It gave me a piece of mind that if my car did not pass smog, I would not have to fork out another 40 bucks for the test. They also electronically transfer your results to the DMV, you don't have to worry about taking it to the dreaded DMV line. You can just pay for your registration online! So easy!
