I was referred to ALS years ago by my mechanic, Duc, and have been taking my cars here. I've only had cars older than 2006. Not to say they cannot do other cars. They do honest work here. I had a failed smog and Binh was very patient in walking through all scenarios as well as keeping in mind budgetary issues. I had the privilege of meeting an awesome person who helped me solve my issue with my '98 Oldsmobile Aurora. Earlier this week in Santa Clara I had a Smog test performed on my vehicle but unfortunately it failed probably due to the fact that the "Check Engine Soon" idiot light on my dashboard suddenly turned on while driving the car on the freeway. Mind you that I just recently purchased this new-used car and everything checked out fine with the mechanic. I was instructed by the SC Smog Technician to go online to research "Smog Test & Repair Stations"...this was an education for me because they don't tell us anything about the two types of places that deal with Smog Testing. In fact, to save time & money go to a "Smog Test & Repair Station" versus a regular "Smog Test" establishment...after calling around to several different companies...ALS Smog & Repair was recommended for my older model vehicle. So on a Friday afternoon I called and made an appointment with BIHN on the same day. BIHN worked his magic and was able to reset the computer brain on my Aurora. He instructed me to drive to car for a certain amount of miles and then return the next day so that he could hook the Aurora with his computer to see if the car would pass the Smog Retest. I crossed my fingers and called the SC Smog Test location and luckily they were open. So I headed over and took the Smog Retest...and what do you think happened...I held my breath and was rewarded with the results of my Aurora passing the Smog Retest. The value of my experience at ALS Smog & Repair was priceless because BINH didn't have to do anything to repair the exhaust system. BIHN educated me on how my vehicle's computer brain is constantly working and something triggered the computer system to make the "Check Engine Light" turn on...no out of pocket expense other than refueling the Aurora after driving it all over town as instructed. I live out of the area but I will definitely drive the distance in case my Aurora needs any more repair work done on it because I believe that BIHN is an honest person and he knows a lot about older vehicles read more

The place is quiet and seclude so difficult to notice in the corner of a repair facility. However, the business is honest and fast. I brought my cars there for years. He asked for my keys and took my car around to the back. It took about 10 minutes. At the end he gives you a receipt and they send it electronically to the DMV for you. I brought my car in at the very last minute...during lunch time on Monday. But, I did call first to see if I needed to make an appointment for a smog check. A gentleman answered my call and said that I could bring in my car right away and there was no wait. A sweet older man(maybe the owner?) took care of me right away when I got there. Apparently, he was working solo. I think the whole procedure took less than 10 minutes. I felt bad that I had cut into his lunch time. Great place to get a smog test - paid $40.20 out the door for a test only check (Acura Integra). No coupons to search/clip - just $40 bucks flat. I would probably give it a 4.5 stars, but no halfsies. The guys there were friendly and helpful - during my first trip there, they told me I would fail the check since my check engine light was on and they graciously pulled the code for me (dealerships charge $$ for this 1 minute process). FYI: I had actually already pulled the code myself - I have a 97 Integra and there's a paperclip trick that allows you to figure out the code yourself - good tip to know if you don't have an ODB reader or don't feel like shelling out money to the dealership. You can look this up on Google. Fast forward a week later....I got my car fixed and came back (the guy actually remembered me). There's usually a few cars in queue; I probably waited about 20, 25 minutes to get my check done. The shop is a little old an dingy, but there's at least a waiting area with some magazines. The shop is located in a street circle of auto shops - and I slightly remember the place was not obvious to find. For some reason, the invoice also says "Al's Auto Service", so there might be some confusion on the name. I also remember that they were open a little later than most auto shops...if I remember correctly, I **believe** they closed at 7pm. You might want to call in to double check. Anyway, I'll definitely be back and will be recommending this place to my friends. read more
