We love the hamburgers here. They are absolutely hamburger nirvana, juicy, with a great flavor and to top that they come with outstanding French fries, or even better real sweet potato fries (not the frozen mass produced version). I like my burger with carmelized onions, yummy. Their sliced brisket sandwich is super tasty, and their roast chicken is wonderful, half of a wonderfully moist chicken served with an assortment of homemade BBQ sauces. Also homemade and delicious are their pickles which arrive at the table as soon as you are seated. The service is excellent, very attentive and friendly. I've tried the low end of Milt's menu on two occasions. I wish I could give them a better rating. They certainly had a lot of people both times I was there, & I wound up sitting at the counter because I didn't want to wait around. This is not a negative - I think I prefer the counter at this place, at least when dining alone. The place is loud, but not overly so by today's standards (which, in my view, allow too much noise). The first time I had some short rib tacos (an appetizer I had as a meal) and the second I had the hot dog with chopped brisket. The tacos were good enough, and a decent portion, but nothing I'd go out of my way to get again - short ribs usually are better. The hot dog was disappointing - it was a concept that Hot Doug might come up with, but the execution failed. The sandwich was dry and only moderately flavorful. The B&B pickles are great, the fries are very good, and the potato salad is pretty good though not good enough to tempt me to eat the whole generous portion. On the one hand, I'm kind of old and my appetite has diminished; on the other, when something is really good I can still eat it all, even if it's more than I can eat. The service was courteous and efficient, though the waitress this last time returned me a five & two singles on a $20 bill, which means she wasn't thinking hard enough about her tip, or she thought that somehow I'd give her the fiver. Delicious!!! First and foremost: this restaurant caters to EVERYONE. As a picky eater with food allergies, I typically have to hunt through a menu for what few selections are available to me. Not at Milt's!!!! The pickles, chicken wings (smoked and buffalo), and BBQ salmon (yes, they have BBQ salmon!) were some of my favorites, but you really can't go wrong with this menu. The food is served with a variety of BBQ sauces (South Carolina mustard-based, North Carolina vinegar-based, Kansas City ketchup-based) which turned one dish into three. Each sauce was flavorful, but they complemented rather than overpowered the food. The food was ridiculous, the service was great, and the setting (especially the magnetic expressions of the perplexed Uncle Milt, such as "What hair color do they assign bald men on a driver's license?" was warm and inviting. We had family in town for the week who keep kosher so we made reservations on Wednesday at 1:00 at Milt's. We were seated right away at the long table next to the bar, as there were ten of us. The place was pretty quiet, maybe 3 or 4 other tables occupied. Small, quiet, and clean environment. Our waiter was very nice, informative, and funny (never caught his name). I had a Guinness and tried the fried okra we ordered. Not bad. I don't like sweet pickles, so no thanks. I had the smoked brisket sandwich with french fries and it was delicious. The bun was fresh, the meat was juicy, lean, and plentiful. I took a couple bites just to enjoy the flavor of the meat, then added a bit of the lighter, sweeter bbq sauce and some of the darker, richer, smokier sauce to give it a kick. The fries were thick cut (reminded me of boardwalk fries) and deep-fried to perfection; maybe one was a little soggy. For dessert, we all shared the brownie with soy ice cream. I've tried soy ice cream before and am not a fan, but I was pleasantly surprised. For someone who doesn't keep kosher unless dining with family who do, I have had my fair share of bad experiences with bland, flavorless kosher foods. Milt's is definitely not in that category. Get the brisket sandwich; you won't be disappointed. Some people complain about the prices; but, guess what? Beef prices are through the roof, and it costs money to be kosher as well. It's a once-every-few-months treat, not a place you go for lunch or dinner every day/week. read more

Well run. Low turnover, staff remembers the people that come back. We live around the corner and go all the time. Its hard for us not to get the milt burger on the pretzel bun. For those with young kids, this place passes the family-friendly test! I'd already been to Milt's with an adult crowd, but tonight we took the kids out for dinner and had a great experience. We arrived with my young daughters (ages 3 and 1) at around 5:30, which is prime dinner time for them but the place was mostly empty and we were able to be seated immediately. High chairs and kiddie cups of water with straws were immediately provided. The hot dog was great for my older one, and the chicken tenders were a hit with my little one - although she didn't finish them and we were more than happy to have these crispy treats alongside our own food. The corn on the cob and sweet potato fries were also a big hit for the little ones, and for us too. We asked our server to take our order for the kids first and get that going, which she did promptly. So the kid's food arrived just as they were getting bored of the crayons and paper place mats. The bussing staff was also very attentive, clearing various plates as they were emptied and regularly refilling my water. Fellow diners (as the place began to fill around 6PM) were friendly to my boisterous kiddos, and the acoustics allowed the kids to be themselves without disturbing too much, although I did try to keep their noise to a minimum. Parents out there know the value of good kiddie apps on your iphone... As for me and my husband, we ate well. I LOVED the Milt's burger. So much personality. He had the BBQ half chicken, which was more than enough food for him, and a good glass of wine. My favorite: the cornbread. You have to be a cornbread fan to like it, but if you are, this is the best I've tasted. The sweet potato fries were the "ruffled" kind with those ridges on it. I wanted something a little more rustic, like the regular fries that looked like they came from actual potatoes. This looked like they came from a freezer bag. (Sorry, Milt.) The place is clean enough that I didn't worry about my 1-yr-old eating directly off the table. Also, the wipes that they give you at the end were helpful for BBQ hands - mine and theirs. Overall, we had a good experience and we were able to leave quickly enough that the grown-up diners still had their reasonable dinner atmosphere. In Chicago there's not too many good kosher restaurants. Milt's is one of the best restaurants here, with amazing Brisket, sweet potato fries, burgers and fake bacon. I think it has a nice vibe and good service. They have lots of options on the menu that are for vegetarians, gluten free etc,. They even have gluten free beer which is quite the novelty item. The menu items are pricey, but I do expect that since it's a kosher restaurant and its just overall more expensive. I think that if you don't keep kosher, might not be worth it to come here, unless you're in need of a GF menu. read more

This place is a total mind f@&k! It's run by Jews, but it's NOT for profit! I kid, I kid... Seriously, I didn't have high hopes for a BBQ place that didn't have pork on the menu, but I was very surprised! I had the brisket sandwich, and it was great. They also have a few things on the menu that include "bacon," but since I don't like synthetic anything, I didn't indulge. Overall, I had a very positive experience here. I would recommend giving this place a shot if you haven't tried it, and I will definitely be going back. The staff was friendly and welcoming. I am very fussy with service, and I was impressed by the waiter's attention to our table. The service was great overall. The 3 BBQ sauces are delicious, as are the pickles. I got a burger and sweet potato fries. Probably the best sweet potato fries I've had in a long time. The burger was solid as well, and not heavily seasoned (which is good or bad depending on how you like your burgers). I also got the nachos, which had BBQ beef and guacamole on top. The portion was huge, and the meat was spicy and delicious. The have vegetarian and gluten free alternatives for most items on the menu (if not already marked as V or GF) - including a veggie burger, veggie/gluten free chili, and some salads. The reason I could not give this place 4 stars: The big downside to the night was the buffalo chicken salad. Do yourself a favor and don't order it. The lettuce was fresh, but the chicken was just bizarre. It had some bbq rub on it....I don't know, it just didn't look right....it tasted okay though. Simply put: this place is delicious but expensive. Once I learned that all of the profits go to charity, I have been more inclined to pay these prices. However, it still can get steep with once dish ringing in around $70 if I remember correctly, which just seems odd at a BBQ place in Lakeview, albeit a kosher one. As a non-Jew and lover of BBQ, I will say the meat was spectacular and I didn't notice a difference from non-kosher BBQ (not that I thought I would!). Everything was full of flavor, cooked perfectly, delicious and smoky. Just save up for your next time there and at least remember it's for a good cause! read more

The best part of Milt's is the absolute quality of their ingredients. They care about their food and customers. They are dairy free and nut free. Dairy free is good for thousands of folks but cost them a point for me as I like it in my coffee. The chili was about a 7.5 on my scale. I am tough on chili as I have had it all over and love it. I had the brisket BBQ. Please remember that this place is Kosher so no pork anywhere and is probably why there is no dairy. I had the brisket BBQ. They serve it dry and that is when I got to examine the meat. You could not ask for better meat. They gave 3 small pots of sauce to choose from. I liked the house sauce and the mustard based best. I was too full to try the desert but it sounded like a good choice. My waitress, Renata , was professional and helped me to make a choice. I may not be able to return as it is a little out of my price range. The ribs look great. There was 10 folks there celebrating a birthday and it looked like they had a fine time. Service is overall pleasant, but there's some room for improvement. If fries are going to be a staple item, then ketchup should be easily obtainable. I don't see any need to question someone about reservations when it's just 1-2 people and the restaurant is 80% empty on a late weeknight. Very flavorful, spicy but not burn your insides out. Started with the empanadas. They were perfect. Almost made me sorry I didn't order The brisket. This changed when the ribs arrived. Be ready to share the portion, half rack, is enormous. Smiley flavor with a hint of zatar. Loved it. Sides could not live up to the entree but were just fine. My overall experience with Milt's was so enjoyable, I will DEFINITELY be back. The decor was very comfortable and appealing and the service was great. Being a kosher restaurant, it has fantastic options for vegetarians like me. I loved everything I tried: house-made pickles, fried okra with garlic aioli, fresh corn bread, and vegetarian chili. They let us try all three of the house-made barbecue sauces which were all incredible. For our entrees, we had the veggie burger and the barbecue seitan sandwich - SO GOOD. The hubby & I stopped in for lunch on a Friday afternoon. It was @ 1PM & we learned that they close at 2PM on Fridays to prepare for the Sabbath. Fair enough. We never felt rushed. It's a nice room with a fully stocked bar. A little pricey, but it's Kosher. The chili is kickass. NIce and spicy, very meaty & satisfying. The corn bread is yummy & my husband's brisket sandwich (sliced) was quite tasty. The nicest part of the business, however, has nothing to do with the food or service. It's with the philosophy of the owner who has eschewed taking any profits from the business so that he can support local charities. So the next time I am dining there, I'll be sure to have some alcohol because that is the highest marked-up item in any restaurant, thereby supporting this charitable mission to the maximum effect. Despite the place being mostly empty, the waiter couldn't be bothered with my order. Bryan Gryka - the executive chef has hit a home-run! The food was awesome! We had samplers of brisket, pulled chicken and burger - all great! The 3 featured bbq sauces all tasted amazing in their own way (Carolina one was my favorite). Chili was nice, meaty and just perfectly spicy. Milt's burger's multiple layers provided a great treat for burger fans. Best catchup (apple-infused) ever! The drinks were tasty and strong and the apple-infused bourbon was out of this world! The ambiance was hip, but not-too-hip and the crowd was mixed, but leaned on the young side. We'll be back soon! read more
