Went into this place on a whim. Glad I did. The food is delicious, and the Titas (Aunties) were super nice and helpful. I have no self control, so I got all this food just for myself. Good thing I like leftovers. The beef short rib stew was generous and so good. The meat is the perfect texture with complementary veggies. The empanada was not what I expected, and very good. The dough was fluffier than I've experienced with Latin empanadas. There is no parking, but I have no trouble finding street parking in that area. They have tables and chairs if you want to eat there, and they had signs for catering options. They also have a small shop area with snacks and ingredients for purchase. I ordered the pork lumpia and chicken adobo with rice. The lumpia was good, but could've used more seasoning and they were cheap with the sweet chili sauce. The chicken adobo wasn't great at all. The sauce was really watery and the chicken didn't look appetizing. read more

Was trying to call to place an order and when someone finally answers the phone I get an older sounding lady yelling the shit outta me calling me rude and whatever the fcuk else. First off I called and when the phone picked up it was literally just loud music and the phone disconnected. Okay np I thought - prob an answering machine type thing. Call again and the phone picked up but no one on the other side. Okay no prob so I called again to get an angry ass person yelling at me telling me how rude I am for not answering or saying anything. She didn't even give me a chance to say anything bc she kept yelling at me. I said "mam I did say hello but no one said anything" and she continued to belittle me. My family and I have been going here for years, probably over a decade, for Filipino food and we love this small family-owned business. We regularly get food for the holidays around here. Some of our faves are their palabok (my mom loves and says unlike some other places here in the US, it tastes like the palabok she'e had in the Philippines), turon, and their camaron rebosado. 3.5 stars. Mina's Kitchenette is part Asian grocery store and part Filipino restaurant. The restaurant feels very homey with lots of plants and fairy lights. They sell mostly Asian snacks, some baked items, condiments, sauces, canned food, and juices. It's also a turo-turo (point-point) restaurant which is a very popular Filipino restaurant concept. It's similar to buffet display service where you point to the food you want; they plate it for you, and you bring it to your table. Here at Mina's, you'll find the usual Filipino dishes like Bulalo (pork shank soup), Kare Kare (ox tail stew), Dinuguan (pork blood stew), Kaldereta (tomato-based stew), Tinola (chicken soup), and Ginataan (coconut milk-based stew) just to name a few. We went by this past weekend to check them out and got 2 combo meals. The combo meal consists of rice with your choice of two small entrées. We got the chicken BBQ, Laing, Dinuguan and the Kaldereta. And for dessert we got Halo-halo. Our favorite was the Chicken BBQ. The meat was tender, and the sauce was both savory and sweet. The Dinuguan was also pretty good, but the sauce was somewhat watery. It was cooked well and there was no metallic taste from the pork blood. The beef in the Kaldereta was very fatty. Not sure if that was just bad luck or what. The Laing was okay. I wished it had more heat. Laing is usually a spicy dish, but this was not. And I think they used canned taro leaves for the ingredients because there was a slight chalky after taste. The Halo Halo was surprisingly very good. I wasn't a fan of the two canned cherries that was placed on top, but otherwise thought it was a yummy dessert. They were not stingy with the toppings which included, two scoops of flan, ube ice cream, pieces of boiled taro, sago, coconut strips, and gulaman (agar). The dishes over all were good and the portions were just right. I think for this neighborhood this is a good solid option to go to when looking for Filipino food. Walked in without any expectation but was pleasantly greeted by no other than Auntie Leticia (sorry for the spelling) and Auntie Mina. Both had such a warm, inviting aura about them. Auntie Leticia spent majority of her time describing and recommending both her and customer's favorite dishes. She had to have given us approximately 6-7 things to try before we even ordered! On this occasion, I came by to pick up some ordered food for our Christmas Eve celebration, we ordered a tray of crispy deep fried pork belly (Lechon kawali) and a tray of braised beef/beef stew (mechado). I came on the scheduled pick-up time and my orders were ready. Always expect a warm friendly welcome when you visit here, the staff and the owner are very pleasant and hospitable. If you haven't tried Filipino food yet, they are more than willing to explain to you each dish that looks good for you. The process on how you dine in this place is, go near the food display stand, point out to the staff which food you want, when you are done choosing get to your table and they will serve you the food. As expected, our ordered food tasted delicious, the Lechon kawali was very crispy and tasted very well with the accompanying pork liver sauce, the mechado was very flavorful and meat were very tender. Prices are a bit higher as compared to other places that offers the same dishes but the food quality is worth it. I'm not Filipino but I was taken in by the Filipino club at my college and got acquainted with lots of wonderful dishes thru pot lucks and family meals during my time in the Bay Area -- I'm grateful for that. Sometimes I crave the warmth of sinigang when it's cold, especially when it's made with love by people like the aunties at Minas Restaurant. I came in a Sunday afternoon to pick up some dinner to go because I was sick of sitting at home cooking. Besides the sinigang, the lady behind the counter suggested a few fresh items for me to get including freshly fried turon and a meat stew type thing. We just discovered this gem yesterday. I totally agree with the other review that said the staff here are your aunties. Auntie Laticia (sorry i don't know how to spell her name) was so so warm and welcoming, she offered us samples of certain items when she learned that it was our first time there. We got to meet Auntie Mina as well, who was just as kind. There was a customer who came in to pick up a lechon order while we were there, and even he was very friendly. Amazingly positive atmosphere in this restaurant! The food is amazing, taste as good as they look. They have the Filipino staples, chicken adobo, chicken asado, dried taro leaves in coconut milk (my fave), several pork dishes, beef stews. For takeout orders, a single serving is one of the small soup takeout containers, a large serving is the large soup container. I believe a single serving is a little under $10, as a previous review mentioned, it's not cheap but portion is plentiful and food is hearty. The flavors are deep, seasoned, yet refreshing, depending on the vinegar content. This place has had a few names (Used to be called Dotys and Hi Luck) yet the food has been consistent as well as the people who work there(front of the house). You are always greeted with a big smile!! If you are not sure about something just ask and they'll tell you all about it. Tips about the Food: Do not come here with anyone who has "eyes bigger than their stomach" because you will leave here with a heavy load and a lighter wallet. lol The food is very heavy and filling. I always tell my husband we will only get two things and share- he always sees more stuff he wants to try or remembers liking and we leave with a ton of food. Also the portions are not cheap!! Don't be shy about getting additional rice- you will need it in comparison to the portions of the entrees. Overall, you will always have left overs. Food: I had the lechon kawali which is like chicharron. It has a sweet sauce that they send with it. I prefer the vinegar sauce with this meal. I also had the shanghai eggrolls. These are small rolls, not filling; it is suitable as a snack or appetizer. My husband had 4 bbq meat sticks- 2 pork and 2 chicken. These are really good and tender-the sauce is delicious as well. To share we got kalabasa which is root veggies in coconut milk which is sweet in a subtle way. Very good! We got Mungo which are mung beans in a creamy base with meat (I think pork) in it. This is really good! Even a person who is not crazy about beans will enjoy this. We also got Bicol which is pork in a coconut cream base that is really tasty as well. I have never gotten anything from this place that was not good! The food usually last at least 2 days but for me typically three days. Cost: See receipt I attached to photos. We got a number of things and it came up to $73.31. This is not cheap but the food is homemade and the portions are plentiful. I've paid more for food that was consumed in one sitting. Overall: This place is one of my favorite local spots. Since the food is so heavy I don't come here often! There are only a few places that when you enter the establishment, it makes you feel immediately at home. This is one of those spots. When deciding what to eat, Latisha generously gave us a sizable sample of all (no exaggeration) their food so that we could taste and try their menu before making our final decision. In my opinion, the best Filipino food near my area. I like the way they cook, much better than Kabayan's on Union Turnpike. The food is prepared fresh everyday and the quality is very good. It's a small mom and pop joint, but that is where the best tasting foods are. I recommend trying the sisig (which is chopped up pork lechon mixed with green and red peppers and other goodies that give it such a delectable taste) a must have dish when drinking a cold beer!!! I also recommend the mungo ( a stew with mung beans and meat ), I never liked mungo but my husband ordered it one day and when I tried it, it was really good.
