Came to East Ocean in Alameda for lunch and had a bit of a mixed experience. On the plus side, there's plenty of parking and a lot of seating, which makes it easy for larger groups. The food also came out quickly and was hot, and overall everything we ordered was delicious. Unfortunately, the service really missed the mark. There seemed to be a lot of staff, but it was hard to get what we needed--we had to ask multiple times (and sometimes ask different servers) just to receive basic things. The manager, David, saw about my bad experience here and offered me a do-over, which I did last night with my family. I agreed to come on a night when it wasn't a holiday or special event night to get a sense of what it was during a normal night. I'm happy to say that everything was much better! The food came very quickly, and everything was done well, just as I remembered from my visits in times past. It had been a while before I made my Christmas Eve visit. I'm glad I'm leaving with a much better memory this time around. East Ocean has been remodeled fairly recently, so it's pristine and spacious. I had even forgotten about the parking lot in the back, which my sister used this visit. Being a quieter week night, there were spaces available. I, myself, was able to find a space right out in front, and didn't have to head to the lot, whose entrance in on Pacific Ave. David had also explained the wait snaful on Christmas Eve. Some of the staff last minute said they couldn't come in. So it was an aberration and something they couldn't plan for. With their usual wait staff everything went without a hitch. It's a great space to go for a nicer family gathering as they it's a little more upper scale compared to other Chinese restaurants in the area -especially since they remodeled. We came for an early CNY lunch and decided to do ala carte versus a preset menu. The lobster yee mein, duck, and ginger scallion beef were my favorites. We had a lunch event for sixty people on a busy Saturday in December. David the manager assigned us the large side room that can fit up to 100+ diners. So happy to have the private side room. Our event went from 11:30-2:30 with lunch starting at noon. Angela was our primary host / server and coordinated the start, timing of dishes, change out of plates, etc.. she was highly professional! We had main dishes of: Peking Duck in which the duck skins and buns came out preassembled along with a second plate containing the remainder of the carved-up duck, Walnut Prawns were my MIL's favorite, and Double Lobster Noodles which was a hit for all of the seafood lovers. For Dim Sum, we had: Beef Cheong Fun, Sui Mai, Chicken Feet, and Chicken Sticky Rice,. We wrapped up with Dessert of: Pineapple Custard Bun, Matcha Lava Bun (nice and runny), and Black Sesame Roll. If you're looking for that classic dim sum experience, where servers wheel carts through the aisles and you simply point to what looks good as it passes by, this is the spot. It's getting harder to find places in the Bay Area that still do it this way, mostly because restaurants just don't have the space anymore for carts to weave between tightly packed tables. That alone makes this place feel a little special. The food itself tastes fresh, and yes, the hot sauce passes the test. I've had a few unfortunate (and slightly traumatizing) encounters with off-tasting sauces during the pandemic, so now I always do a cautious smell-and-taste check first. They also serve "tofu fa" (tofu pudding) with a sweet ginger syrup, which was a pleasant surprise. It's one of my favorite desserts and not something you see often at dim sum spots these days since it's not in high demand. Definitely brought back some nostalgic, childhood vibes. Monday Labor Day morning and we were trying to figure out what to get for brunch after a day and night of partying. Looked on Yelp and dim sum looked appetizing! It was a very busy lunch time in Alameda and parking was a bit difficult because it was so busy so we had to circle around for a while. We had a party of 5 and the wait was about 20 minutes but they had a bar! So we went in and got a round of drinks, tequila sodas, lychee martinis, and mimosas on the house for the ladies. We even ran into a local Bay Area rapper Plo who was also waiting for a table. Going to the bar made it fast and it was a busy morning there. Lots of workers with their dim sum carts so we got what was being passed around. We got pork siu mai, shrimp hargow, xlb (we're not soupy), shrimp and beef rice rolls, chicken feet, honey walnut shrimp, guylan, seaweed salad, pork belly, duck, we ordered stuffed eggplant from the kitchen. For dessert we got some egg tarts and sesame buns. We also got an order of hot jasmine tea. We ordered more than enough and had some leftovers for lunch the next day. Service was quick, very family oriented but they didn't give us a menu so we went with what we knew and what they came by with. A perfect place for all party sizes, big and small and quick service. We stopped by this Chinese restaurant while visiting Oakland with family after it was recommended by a family friend who lives in the area. We had a group of nine adults and ordered a lot of food, and everything was excellent. The portions were very generous, and the flavors were delicious across the board. The staff was friendly, accommodating, and very kind. We arrived about fifty minutes before the end of their lunch hours and ended up being the last table still eating while they were closing up and getting ready for dinner. Even so, they let us stay and were attentive the whole time, which we really appreciated. We picked everything a la carte rather than a set menu, and it helped it be more price conscious and could choose exactly what we wanted. We got the peking duck, honey walnut shrimp, seafood clay pot, pork belly, steamed fish, pea sprouts, and so on. All of the food was very tasty! Came for dinner for the first time. We haven't been since the new bar was built. Very pretty. We were able to order some our favorite dim sum dishes as well. Bbq pork bao were perfect meat to bun ratio. I love the little riblets. Lotus sticky rice is great. The walnut shrimp was delicious with the lightest coating, perfect! I was introduced to Chow Fun over 50 years ago at the Silver Dragon in Oakland's Chinatown and although I have found a great venue for Chow Fun in my current city, Austin, TX, there's nothing like the Chow Fun from the San Francisco Bay Area. Initially we were thinking trying a different spot with a 4.4 rating (Dim Sum Best of Taste) but after circling for parking and finally found one just right in front, checked the menu and left. The Con: the same push carts offering the same food... where were the others? Since we had the same carts circulating us, we only ordered a few fundamental items. * Shrimp dumplings: big but most were skin. The thickest skin of all the shrimp dumplings I have tried throughout my 50+ years. Honestly the frozen ones from Costco are better. * Steamed spareribs: this was pretty good. No complaints * Sticky rice lotus leaf: the Chinese name of this item is sticky rice chicken... unless the tiny ground meat in there was ground chicken, there was no chicken just a sad slice of Chinese sausage. The usual egg yolk was no where to be found. Some offers piece of chicken but not here. Maybe the one I got was lacking but my husband said his was the same. The sticky rice was a bit on the dry side. * Turnip cake: good * shrimp rice noodle wrap: standard Overall, very basic. The place was big and offered parking. services was decent. A special birthday celebration and the guest of honor wanted dim sum. We decided try a restaurant that she had never eaten at so instead of dim sum in San Francisco or the Peninsula we decided to try one of the dim sum restaurants in the East Bay. We had a 11:30 reservation. The place was not crowded and were seated immediately. East Ocean still offers dim sum on a cart service. The atmosphere inside felt clean, bright and very roomy. Service was courteous and friendly. They do charge $2 per person for tea. We checked off what dim sum dishes we wanted off the dim sum menu and chose some off of the service cart. East Ocean turned out to be a good experience with a good variety of dim sum. We ordered 12 dim sum dishes. There was only one dim sum dish that all of us did not enjoy. The Baked Cha Sui Bow was all bread with no meat. Wish I took a picture of the inside of the bow! 1 bad out of 12 is not too bad. Every time that I come here whether it's with family or friends the food just gets better with time. The portions are always great in my opinion. We got a handful of things from the dinner menu. Love that they still have carts AND and that they give you the whole soy sauce and chili (unlike other places that now give condiments in teeny tiny bowls, and you have to ask for more 5x during the meal). The staff were super pleasant and nice. The restaurant has a large dining room with a mix of small and large tables, they could definitely accommodate larger parties. Ambiance it's been truly long time since I been here so surprised to see the renovation and open plan setting. However parking has become more challenging than ever. Our host pre ordered Ala cart dishes and when they came in very large portions and came out timely manner. East Ocean has been a staple favorite for my family forever. We often find ourselves here for dim sum on weekends just for fun and have even rented the restaurant for bigger family celebrations. Most recently, I also dined there for dinner (which is a really different experience than dim sum brunch). On the weekends, parking on webster can be tough. They have a small parking lot in the back for their customers (super small, like maybe 4-5 spaces for their restaurant). Other than that, it's mostly street parking and metered parking in paid lots around Webster. Prepare for a short walk if you don't get lucky with spaces right up front. Also on the weekends, this restaurant is PACKED. From what I can remember, they don't really accept reservations during the brunch time so we've often had to wait. But it's worth the wait! They do take reservations for dinners though. It's also a lot less busy, especially on the weekdays. Service is always great here. The staff works quickly to make sure everyone is taken care of. During brunch time, there's always someone passing by with carts of food or ready to take your order if you're wanting anything specific. And most importantly, the food is really good!
