So I low-key was stalking Jordan on Insta and stumbled on mint. Checked out some photos, saw the new client deal where you get tips on how to style and I tried it. It was AMAZING. Please come if you are struggling rocking your natural curls. The mint cut comes with a dry cut, then a wash where they show you how to wash and start to style your hair, explaining it all step by step. Curly head my entire life, 60 yrs into it have a pretty good handle on it. New to the area (we ALL know what's coming next), thought a salon that "specializes" in curl would know what they were doing - NOT. This whole "curly girl" business?? OK - dry cut, then rinse/wash, to the dryer, bend over a basin on the floor (no clue why) while the stylist does something , the under a hood dryer that simulated "natural air drying" . My hair flattens out (doesn't happen with a defuser.....). Is it the DIVA products they use? Is it the whole......dryer thing? Dunno, but doesn't work with my hair. Maybe works with corkscrew curls (??), tried it twice-won't be back. read more

When you go to a salon to get your hair cut or done you expect to get what you asked for, to be listened to and have what you want carried out. But not here. From being a client at many salons, it goes to show you I still haven't found a hairdresser worth her salt. Not a single one. I had high hopes for this place. A curly hair salon that also is supposed to know all curl patterns, even straight or wavy. I had the trainee and was told that they all have extensive training and the trainee has been a hairdresser for 12 years. That the trainee is just as good as the experienced curl devas. And said she knows what's she's doing. She only had a year and a half at some cheap haircut place as I found out after sitting in her chair. That's not what I was told. I was fooled. If only I would have been told the truth. I would've not even taken the chance with getting my hair done with her. I expected a quality and thorough consultation. Didn't get it. The girl asked me, are you scared/nervous about getting your hair done? Well, I wasn't as I should of been, but told her I have had many not so good hair experiences. She was so... young. Not what I expected as far as age, from an experienced stylist. I was not asked any questions about my hair routine, what I used, how I normally wore my hair. I did try to tell her, cuz she didn't ask what I wanted and how I wanted it. I brought pictures and asked for their expert advice (namely the owner)came over and I showed her pics of what I thought I wanted. She thought a certain hairstyle that was amongst the pictures was the best one for me. I mean she was the owner after all, I thought who would know best more than her? I got offered a drink, used the ladies room. Oh btw, the ladies room didn't have hardly any light. I could barely see what I was doing. No paper towel, no hand dryer and their was just watered down liquid soap. The small cloth hand towel was a disgustingly dirty thing in a box. It seemed like they didn't care about their bathroom or cleanliness. It was awful. I didn't want to touch anything. Ewww. Not a good sign if this how they keep the bathroom. So I got brought to a salon chair, sat down and told the girl and the owner to not mess up my hair, pleeease. So Jordan had the girl Lacey get started and I sat in the chair for a few minutes, then to the sink. She didn't tell me what she was using in my hair for shampoo/conditioner, I had to ask her, cuz she wasn't offering up that information. I felt uncomfortable cuz she wasn't really making any conversation with me, so I then tried to. It felt a bit uncomfortable. She wasn't trying to hard to make me feel at home. So I did all the talking. So Jordan gave her instructions on how to cut my hair, which I was surprised at cuz, I thought she was a hairdresser for years. Red flags were flying. So Jordan actually did some of the cutting. But mostly Lacey did. We discussed my bangs and how I wanted them(type of bang, length(between my eyes and eyebrows),not too thin, or piecey. Now Lacey didn't do my bangs. Jordan did. I felt good that the owner was doing them, cuz you know I thought she would give me exactly what I asked for. Wrong. She agreed that should would do that, but did the exact opposite. Didn't listen to me at all or care about what I thought of them. So the shears come out, the razor, chop, chop, snip, snip. I told her to keep my bangs long, to not make them thin or piecey or short. She butchered my bangs, she just kept on making them shorter. I couldn't believe it. My bangs were half way up my forehead with even shorter whisky pieces. My nightmare haircut came back from the past to haunt me. The ends of my hair on the bottom where uneven and I looked awful. I was in complete shock! And she said, you look great! And I couldn't form any words. She didn't ask me if I liked my hair, and obviously she didn't care. Or she would've asked me. And then the pictures that were taken of me afterwards. I was super reluctant after I saw the final result. I realized after it was for her portfolio on their site. They made me look ugly. The pictures were awful. So unflattering. I was embarrassed, so embarrassed. Now going out in public, I just wanted to put a paper bag over my head and go home and hide. This is one of the worst haircuts I told them NOT to give me! What is this, hairdressers revenge? You can't fix this hair disaster. So why would I have them fix it. There's no fixing it. I really feel so upset about this. It's been weeks and I still look awful. I have to wear headbands to hide the bangs as best as I can. I look like I'm wearing a horrible unnatural looking wig, that someone who doesn't know how to cut hair, took some hedge trimmers to. read more

I came in with a cold. Literally a cold. This is winter in upstate NY. I have been at work for almost 2 weeks with this cold, no one has been freaking out over it or asking me to leave. The stylist I had been assigned to had cut hair off the back of my head when another stylist came up to us and told me I had to leave. I told her I would not since the haircut had not been finished, it was unfair to expect me to go out in public with my hair half cut. She told the girl that was cutting my hair to stop cutting it. Don't even try going there during the coronavirus panic, they might kick you out with your hair only half cut. An absolute FAILURE in courtesy or fairness of customer service. If they are that freaked out they need to close business or screen people before you cut half their hair then force them to leave the salon with your hair half cut read more

I would never recommend this salon to a friend or colleague. They charge a steep price for the haircuts but the real problem is the owner. When I expressed my dismay she didn't try and work with me or offer a discount on the terrible haircut I received. Her attitude is terrible. I'm reading the other reviews and noticed that the shop's response is to say that the person never visited the salon and gave a fake review. No girl. I'm real. Don't even try that. Curly haired ladies, get here now! Oh, it was just lovely. The atmosphere of the salon is adorable, retro, funky, and oddly familiar/comforting. I called yesterday on a whim, got an appointment for today - cut & foil work with Gabby. I spoke with the owner because I had several questions while trying to navigate the website, diagnose what kind of curls I had, and figure out all of the other services. I was gently reminded there are phones and when you pick one up and use it, there is likely a friendly voice on the other end eager to answer questions. I explained my hair, what I was looking for, and that I just needed some added funk to my already fun hair. I was welcomed with friendly faces and immediately felt at ease with all the other curly haired comrades entering and exiting - I laughed with the stylist that curly hair salon stories are abundant and hair shock is something I am all too familiar with. She listened to my styling routine, what I was looking for regarding color, and wait...wait....that I didn't want much off of my length! I just did my final test - I informed her it is important that I can still whip my hair up in a sloppy bun at the end of the day - sure enough, not one little ringlet to be found outside of my messy knot. She listened. Bottom line. It was fascinating to watch Gabby cut my hair - curl by curl. Patient. It was also fun to watch all the curly haired babes around me get devafied! Cut was perfect. No surprises. I had my ends lightened - she took so much time neatly painting the finest little strands of hair. Unlike other salons, where the stylist whips your color on, throws you under the dryer, runs to cut someone else's hair, has their assistant rinse you, etc. - at Mint you're it. It's nice to know the very hands that can ruin your day, week, month, year with a few wrong snips are accessible and eager to check in on you and ensure you're satisfied with the outcome. The pricing was beyond reasonable - I was there about two hours but it went by so quickly! As I watched, listened, and learned a little bit from my stylist and the other extremely talented, funky, and fun gals that work there, it occurred to me this is exactly the place that turns angsty 13 year old girls that HATE their hair into curly haired beauties that rock their bouncing locks with pride. Curly hair or not, this salon is just what I've been looking for. The hairdressers aren't afraid that they might have "cut off just a little too much..." You are a part of the entire process. My hair is one of my favorite things about myself - I stopped trying to force pin straight Barbie locks in my late teens, early twenties and haven't looked back - those god awful hair fryers that leave your hair limp, lifeless, and never quite as straight as you'd like it to be. Mint will restore your love for your curls & leave you wanting more! I have already booked another appointment and will HIGHLY recommend this salon - curls or not, these gals know what they're doing. This is the place to go for curly girls! I've tried so many salons who promise they "know" how to cut curly hair. What that usually means is they assume your wet hair will get shorter as it curls - and then just mess it all up until your a triangle head. NOT here! At Mint the stylists seriously know their curls. When I told Dom about my droopy hair, we talked about different causes ranging from weather to detoxing product build-up. She hit my hair while dry - and yes - when you watch this happening it doesn't look like much but when done - it's like a magical hair transformation. And that's before the wash and curl-inducing styling. They did detox my hair and the woman washing my hair massaged my head and put me into an alternate relaxed reality. If you're new this curl styling, you will be amazed at how styling wet hair and sitting under the dryer for a bit will change your curls from frizzy droops to silky soft goddess curls. This was my first visit to Mint and my first visit to a curly salon. All I can say is: wow! Wonderful customer service and really friendly stylists who truly care about your individual curls. I went in to get my hair colored for the first time ever and the stylist knew what I wanted even without me being able to articulate it. She explained everything she was doing and the whole story behind the Deva Curl system. I left really happy with my new style (and with how she styled my hair) and without breaking the bank. Bonus: the atmosphere is super chic and adorable (like you walked into a Pinterest board). I live out of town, but might be traveling back every time I need a cut just to revisit Mint! read more

I had the pleasure of the MINT experience today. I am a Black female who has been natural for the past 13 years. I have recently been very frustrated with my hair, because it is always frizzy, it never has a consistent pattern, and it has started to shed a lot. Out of frustration, I did a massive google search, and I lucked up and found this wonderful salon. After reading the reviews, I was more than happy to drive the 1hr + from Buffalo to have an expert finally help me! The website had me a little nervous- once I saw that most hair cuts were done dry, but no worries... Every consultation is customized to YOU! Jen Fowler, my wonderful, amazing, nice, super sweet, and caring hair stylist customized my MINT experience and did it with poise and reassurance. I trusted her from the moment that she greeted me, and she definitely did not disappoint! She did my process "in reverse" as she clarified, conditioned, maintained my frizz, drye'ed, then diffused my hair prior to doing any dramatic chop. Once we both saw the AMAZING results from her expert hands and the failsafe product (deva curl- she described every product and its use throughout the appointment), we realized that my hair wasn't damaged at all. It was just yearning for some TLC. I HAVE NEVER had curls so well defined and luscious! I could just tell that she (and everyone else at the salon) really cares about hair health, maintenance, and client satisfaction. Luckily, they have the product for sale in the salon (I HAD to make a purchase)! I tested the hair this evening with a 2 mile jog. I had a very loose ponytail- and to my surprise, and this has NEVER happened- I had no frizz and once I took the pony out, my curls still looked GORGEOUS! Full disclosure - I'm not much of a "salon" guy. I've lived in Queens for years and go to an old-school barbershop, but I was in Rochester visiting my brother and needed a haircut so I checked this place out on a friend's recommendation and it was pretty great. I've been twice over the last couple years or so, now, saw Rachel both times. In addition to getting a sweet haircut (real thick, wavy hair so I never know what to do with it, just told Rachel to surprise me and it was great!) She ALSO washed my hair and gave a scalp massage, which was a pleasant surprise and upgrade from my normal barbershop shtick. She also didn't force conversation; we talked for a bit and when I stopped talking she just kept working which I loved. Feeling like I have to force conversation at a salon is one of the most awkward things and wasn't a problem here. I also remember there was a little girl getting a haircut and it felt like the whole staff looked over to tell her how awesome she looked and that she was going to love it and this little girl was BEAMING. Even some of the other clients felt comfortable chiming in and having fun. I am an older man who was visiting his daughter in Rochester during Thanksgiving week. I needed my hair styled and a friend at the Thanksgiving table recommended Mint. I'll never trust his recommendation again. The place was stylish, but noisy. So noisy that I didn't even hear my stylist's name. The styling and haircut was sub-par. I've gotten better haircuts at Sportsclips for half the price. Even though I told the stylist what I wanted done-- it was not done. Overall, a very disappointing experience. When I lived in Rochester, I had my hair done at another salon ( Keith's) near Mint. That salon was quiet, professional an well worth the price- just the opposite of Mint. I visited Mint for an American Wave, after a consultation with Rachel about the concerns of doing it on my (unnatural) blond hair. She was very honest and open about the risks, and when I agreed to them, she came up with a plan to make sure I had the best outcome possible. I was very happy with the results, and with the excellent customer service I received. I also happened to be there when the client who left the unkind review about being asked to leave the property was there. She was being unsavory in front of the children that were present and was asked to leave for that reason. It's a shame that people do not listen to their stylists when they try and set realistic expectations for a specific process. Had my perm not turned out, I would not have demanded a refund, because I took that risk despite being told what might happen. All in all, if you want to be treated kindly and walk away feeling gorgeous, I would highly recommend Mint read more
