I stopped by Mints and Honey on a Friday for lunch and had a great experience. We were able to find street parking nearby, and since there is no dedicated lot, it was nice that we did not have to pay. As soon as we walked in, we were warmly greeted and seated. The host was very friendly and explained that once we were ready to order, we could head to the register in the back. After placing our order for a group of four, our drinks arrived within just a few minutes. They looked exactly like the menu descriptions and tasted just as good. The food was fresh, hot, and clearly made with quality ingredients. We all especially loved the tomato soup. We also ordered a waffle to share as an appetizer, and it came topped with large, beautiful strawberries that tasted amazing. The portion size was generous. I ordered the Fresh Mozzarella sandwich on ciabatta bread and asked for it toasted, and it was phenomenal. I did not have very high expectations since this was a quick, last minute choice and we did not even check reviews beforehand, but I am so glad we gave it a try. My first time here but my girlfriend who was visiting from Texas has eaten here recently while flying through to see her brother. The problem came when the lady would brought the last food item the GF item and she said hey are we missing anything and I said yes my cortado and friend who ordered 10 min before we did so half and hour ago said she never got her hot coco. We said thanks for finding them for us and she lectured us on how busy they are etc etc and were like WHOA THERE we did not complain although my friend could have as he drink came after she had eaten and 30 min after she ordered and yet we never complained. My complaint is with this staff members attitude, and I "assume" it came from dealing with folks expecting the food or drinks to all come out at same time and thats not how these types of places work. First time at the San Carlos location! We came on a Friday morning around 10:15an on a holiday and it wasn't too busy, though it started to get busier as the morning went on. The tables are tiny so you can't really order very much food. While the cramped space and self-service model aren't dealbreakers, the lack of cleanliness is--tables are left dirty with no staff coming by to clear them. I ended up cleaning it myself. Secondly, given the bare minimum service, I expect the food to come out right as I'd imagine most attention is spent on the food, right? Nope, I ordered a chopped salad and got a tuna salad instead. Not a big deal if the salad is good, but the salad was just mediocre. Since I was on a tight lunch schedule, waiting for a correction wasn't an option. Paying $20 for a wrong order eaten at a dirty table made the entire experience feel cheap. I won't be back. read more

The cutest brunch spot! I recommend parking near the back because this is where you order your food/drinks before you sit down. The line can get long and extend out past the outdoor seating area. They're known for making good coffee, and they use Verve. As you can tell by my photos, I've been here many times and always have a good experience. My favorite food-wise has to be the avocado and egg toast. The sour batard bread has the perfect chew, and I love the soft boiled egg on top. The food is always plated beautifully. My friend had planned the whole day planned for us. It was high tea at Mints & Honey in the morning and then half a day at Filoli Gardens. But I guess something changed since the last time she dined here. The menu, which isn't available on their website, stated afternoon tea was pre-order only. Turns out reservations have to be made at least 2 days in advance if you want afternoon tea. This includes tea for 1. So that was disappointing to hear. It would be nice if that was stated on their website. So I sorta made my own high tea. I ordered the chicken curry toast, a blueberry scone and added creme and jam for an extra cost, and a cup of Earl Grey tea. Tea for 1 is $29, and my meal with tax and tip was $33. It was pretty good! The chicken curry was bright and savory. I liked the pop of sweetness from the grapes. The toast was thick with a crispy crust and chewy interior. It was hard to cut with a butter knife, so I removed the curry so I can bite into the bread and get the chicken afterwards. And it was a good amount of chicken as it was piled pretty high on the toast. The scone was good as well. It's more wide than tall, but buttery soft with a nice freshness from the blueberries. And it was still warm even after taking my time eating the toast. Since I had to pay extra for the creme and jam, I used as much as I could lol. And it wasn't overly sweet. The Earl Grey was good, too. The menu said it was award winning. I'm not a tea connoisseur, but it was a delicious tea that I would get again. I like that we can seat ourselves and that ordering happens with the cashier. That is so helpful when you're in a group so everyone can pay individually. There's seating inside and out, though it was cold so I'm glad we got to sit inside. There are booths and smaller tables, so parties of any size can fit. Service was quick and friendly. Came here for brunch on a late Friday morning and the place was popping! Very cute decor, aesthetic cafe vibes with some vintage inspiration (like that Smeg fridge on the barista side). It's clearly a popular brunch spot for good reason. There was no wait to walk to the registers in the back to order and choose a table. Our iced salted caramel lattes came out in 10-15 minutes, and the rose + strawberries waffle came out another 15-20 minutes later. The wait didn't feel bad because we were able to sit and relax with our coffees. The iced salted caramel lattes were VERY good. All the caramel at the bottom needed to be mixed in to the coffee, but I loved that it had great flavor and wasn't a sugar bomb. I could drink three of these! As for the rose and strawberry waffle--my goodness it was so delicious. This is a cute brunch spot in San Carlos. I went here a few years ago and forgot how it went so I recently went back and tried it again. There is a lot of seating inside as well as some outside. There are self serve water stations. The food here was just ok. I tried the tomato and ricotta toast and I felt like it was fine. It was a little pricey at $10 and I felt like it could have used some salt so I added some myself. The flavors were fine but nothing outstanding in my opinion. Sometimes I've had ricotta that tastes super good and fresh and I didn't quite get that feeling here. I also tried a Nutella latte. It was $7 which is a bit pricey but at least the cup was big. I thought the drink was tasty but I don't think I would get this regularly. The acoustics in the main part of the cafe were kind of poor. So depending on where you park, you may have to walk through to get to the counter to order. You place an order and get a number and they'll bring food to you. The back patio is dog friendly which is great. The brunch menu has quite a few options, definitely focused on elevated toast options which is fun. We tried the breakfast sandwich which was good- it has avocado, hard boiled egg and tomato on it, and the toast sampler. With the toast sampler you get two slices of toast, but you pick four types of toast- they do one half of each toast with each of your selections. The fig and ricotta with honey was my favorite! Smoked salmon with cream cheese came a close second. I feel like the prices were too high given the overall level of service, and unfortunately, no refills on black coffee! I've had some interesting experiences here to say the least. My overall take: coffee is tasty but service is not their strong suit. This spot is more for brunch, not a cafe or place to grab a coffee, relax and do work. My first time here was on a Saturday morning. I wanted to get coffee and do some work on my laptop before an appointment in the area. I chose to visit and after ordering a $30 meal (coffee and scones), I ask if they have wifi. I am then informed that patrons are not permitted to use devices on the weekend. I was shocked but I understand they want to turn over tables quickly during the weekend. I just wish there was a sign visible, as I didn't see any mention about this. My lavender latte was good but was ruined as I felt very weird about the whole interaction from the woman at the register notifying me of this. She wasn't nice about it. I decided to go to my car to enjoy my $30 coffee and pastry and just mentally noting to not come back. I was then invited here for brunch with family so I was back and strangely enough, had another weird interaction with the same employee as my first time. I was in line to use the restroom and another employee mentioned there was another bathroom around the corner that I could use. I thanked her and walked over, but it was being blocked by this aforementioned employee from my first visit. She informed me that the bathroom was "over there" (where I was in line, waiting) and I explained that I was told I could use this restroom by her colleague. She then retorts with "Well we just closed it". Just not the best experience! Shame because the coffee is good and most other employees here are very nice. But this one employee with a braid in her hair and the weird weekend policies will not inspire me to return and support this business. read more

The middle section has round tables for no work but you are free to laptop work away in the front or back or outside of the cafe. Avocado + Egg Toast (5/5) There are so many choices of toasts but their classic avocado toast is a creamy avocado mash on top of a thick cut sourdough batard, and if you order the one with the egg, you'll get a beautiful soft boiled egg on top. 2. Creamy Mushroom + Egg toast (4/5) I like mushrooms so I'm always excited to see what restaurants do with them. The baby bella mushrooms were sauteed down until creamy and had a light earthy mushroom flavor. The soft boiled egg on top was the same as the other toast. 3. Matcha Latte (5/5) The matcha is a gorgeous vibrant green, had a balanced amount of matcha and milk (not too milky), and had nice latte art. 4. Drip Coffee (4/5) A standard drip coffee from a Bay Area local bean roaster. 5. Scone - currant scone (3/5) We love scone with a coffee, and this way okay but not as flakey and flavorful as we like. The currant scone was the scone of the day and there were only 2 currants in the scone we got which was a little sad. Taste and texture was fine. 6. Cutest little brunch spot! Mints & Honey was pretty busy on a Saturday afternoon, but we were able to seat ourselves right away on the (dog friendly) back patio. The patio had umbrellas for shade, but it was still pretty toasty. I didn't see much of the interior, but it looked very cute - lots of white and pastel colors, plants, etc. Food and drinks were ordered at the counter inside, and brought out to the tables. For drinks, I chose the Matcha Mango Latte, which was excellent. I'd never seen that combination before, but the mango puree went great with the matcha. For food, I went with the Toast Sampler, so that I can try a bit of everything. It came as 4 pieces of toast, which you choose from a (pretty large) list, and I picked the Fig Jam + Ricotta, Mango + Tajin, Creamy Mushroom + Egg, and Applewood Smoked Salmon. All 4 of these were fantastic, and pretty filling as a whole. We also ordered the Berries and Yogurt Waffle to share between the 4 of us, which was so tasty. The presentation was adorable and the I loved the combination of rose jam and greek yogurt. Overall, so good for brunch - would happily return! read more

Got a little confused at first but the register is at the very back when you walk in from the front. It's nice and quaint, I think it would be a great place to study. I love the salted caramel latte that I ordered. So good. This place was recommended to me by my aunt and it did not disappoint. Next time I'm in the area, will definitely grab a bite as well. read more
