I decided to make the best of a cancelled flight back to Denver by having dinner at Mishqui. Typically I'm only able to stop for lunch on my way to the airport. I love this place! The food is always terrific, service is great, and it's a comfortable atmosphere. On this visit I was also able to enjoy their phenomenal pisco sour to start off my wonderful and relaxing meal. There are so many options on the menu that deciding where to start can be a challenge, of the most delicious kind. I settled on the squash and coconut cream soup with salty tostones (friend plantains). It's a perfect combination - velvety soup with just a hint of sweetness contrasting perfectly with the crispy slightly salty plantains. I then had a lovely seafood combination in an amazing yellow chili sauce. Just a bit of spice and incredible flavor. My only regret is I was too full to try anything from the fabulous looking list of dessert options. Maybe next time. read more

This was a struggle. I wanted to go 5 stars and it might deserve 5 stars but I just can't bring myself to do it. Wife and I are in Madison. The why doesn't matter but know we had a very VERY good reason. Anyway, she tasked me with finding a place for dinner and when I saw Peruvian with vegan options including tofu and seitan options, how do you say no? The closest you can get to vegetarian or vegan at most Peruvian places is just something with vegetables or pescatarian. We each started with an empanada. Hers had vegan chorizo and mine was a gluten free version with chicken. I didn't love mine. It was okay but it tasted like they took the chicken stuffing out or the freezer and then deep fried it. The outside was hot but the inside was cold. I also had their chicken and rice soup which was awesome and we got an order of their gluten free Brazilian cheese bread which was fantastic. For entrees, we both got the tacu tacu-hers with veggies and tofu and me with chicken, but gluten free. We both loved our meals. Mine was very soy sauce-y with sweetness, like honey added. There was also enough rice and beans for 6 servings. The fact that I loved and ate it all makes me fat. My wife really liked hers, too, but not being a fatty fat fat like me, she didn't stuff herself to the point of exploding. We each got a drunk, too. She liked her Peruvian margarita and I got their Amazon blush which was a cherry bourbon drink and excellent. So I guess if I am taking a star off it's for my empanada. It's at least a 1/2 star off for the frozen filling and I can't round up to a perfect score for that. read more

Everything was excellent! We were seated outside on a lovely spring day. Our service was impeccable - we never waited to order or for drinks. We were given a great rundown of the menu as well! We really enjoyed the Peruvian empanadas. My pesto dish was very flavorful and the pork dish was cooked perfectly. We will definitely be back!!! read more

First time in Madison and needed somewhere to grab lunch and decided to take a chance on Mishqui! There was another group eating at around 11:15 AM on a Sunday, so we were quickly seated and helped. The space is really nice, spacious, with music playing. Ordered the fried yucca, and also the chicken tamal, which is part of their current Peruvian independence menu. The yucca came out quickly with tartar sauce, and was extremely fresh. It was delicious! Soon after the entrees came out, and the chicken tamal was great. I was surprised that the chicken had a bone but it was so tender that there was no issues. Really nice space, good food, and nice place to stop by for a meal! read more

The food was a bit of a mixed bag. The empanadas were good and I liked their sauces. The shrimp ceviche was excellent, I expected it to be chopped and served with chips, but the shrimp came out whole with the tail. Portions were large and filling, and food was mostly good. Some of the meat was a bit dry, especially parts of the rotisserie chicken, and the sweet plantains were also dry and not as sweet as I would have preferred. The downtown Mishqui location is a great place to dine in. There's ample seating and the ambiance is a nice middle ground--it works for special occasions/dates but you wouldn't be out of place as a casual diner. The service has always been friendly and helpful when I've dined in. I've had takeout a few times and it's usually pretty speedy. Mishqui is a fantastic place for vegans and non-vegans alike. The vegan menu is substantial and everything I've tried has been a hit. For starters, I love both the Colombian and Peruvian empanadas and the yucca fries are great too. As for entrees...I dream of the vegan tacu tacu. The tallarines saltado and locro de zapallo are also very good. I haven't had a chance to try their vegan dessert, but I am thrilled that they have not just one, but TWO options. Can't wait to get back to Mishqui! read more

I've been to the Monona location and was impressed by it so was excited to try the downtown location. Unfortunately, my experience here was marred with incredibly slow service. With only 5 occupied tables, it took almost 10 minutes to get our drink orders in and another 10 to receive them. After ordering our food, it was another 30 minutes for the food to get to the table. No apologies or acknowledgement. No check-in after the food to see how the food was or if we needed another cocktail. Foodwise, it was fine. My rotisserie chicken was in the dry side but thr chaufa was very good. With the poor service flaws, I won't be back. A shame about the automatic 18% gratuity as the service put forward tonight was not worthy of it. read more

I stopped by on a Saturday for lunch. The place was not busy. Ground beef Peruvian empanada was an excellent appetizer. Coconut squash cream soup was really good, creamy and smooth. Rotisserie chicken entree was very flavorful. Chicken fried rice was another flavorful entree. I went for a horchata and chicha morada. Both were really good drinks. Wow! How have I missed this restaurant for the last six months. The tallarines (Peruvian pesto fettuccine) was delicious, especially with some of their beautifully spicy pink chili sauce). I had added some stir fried beef and veggies thinking it would just be an extra topping. Instead it was like a whole extra meal. (Equally delicious, by the way) The milohjas I ordered for dessert was so good and huge! I've got lunch for days. The host was also very friendly and I was amazed by the assortment of empanadas and other pastries. Now I'll need to try out their breakfast menu. TLDR: huge portions of delicious food. Our group of four tried Mishqui Peruvian Bistro on King Street last night. I had previously been to the Monona location and enjoyed it and a couple of folks in our group had tried this location a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed the food. In the 10 years I've been in Madison, this space has been a Japanese, a Mexican, and Korean and now a Peruvian restaurant. Nothing ever seems to last there so we'll see how this goes. The restaurant is open, airy, clean and modern. No problem with the ambiance. The food was excellent. I had a seafood ceviche, and our group had Peruvian empanadas and the tacu tacu. The empanadas had a flaky crust and were filled with a tasty mix which included potatoes, onions, and peppers. The tacu tacu was a hefty dish and I think each order could easily feed two. It's a mix of rice and beans that are fried, covered in sauce and then heaped with vegetables, and the protein of your choice. In our group that was shrimp. My ceviche was delicious, but definitely not the portion size of the tacu tacu. I could have used more. As far as service goes, we were promptly seated and brought waters and menus. They don't have a liquor license yet, but they said they are working on that. It took a while for the food to arrive, but it was so tasty it's worth the wait. We were trying to get out in a timely manner, and it did take an unusual amount of time for our server to bring the checks and then return our credit cards. They do charge an automatic 18% tip even for our party of four. I don't have a problem with that since I would normally tip more, but one member of our party pointed out that there is no incentive for the server to provide excellent service. The food was excellent, so I'm sure I'll go back. Probably just want to wait till they get that liquor license and work out the kinks in the service. read more

They have a good selection of authentic Peruvian dishes. We want to go back and try more from the menu, but the ceviche and the herby chicken rice soup were standouts. I'd skip the yuccas fritas, but the fried rice was surprisingly the best I've ever had. Also don't miss the purple corn juice or the horchata latte. And there's an extensive dessert menu, so save room. Service can take a while, as everything is made carefully, so leave time. read more

The food was very good. The ceviche was fresh and just the right amount of acid. The whole fried fish was moist and flavorful. The beef stir fry was tasty, and I appreciate that they had coconut aminos. Everything could be made gluten free! The service was attentive. The only minus was the gluten free chocolate cake. The ambience was nice inside, but having nice weather, I recommend the outdoor seating. As soon as we walked in we were immediately greeted by a very kind person. They seated us immediately, but then came back within a couple of minutes to ask if we'd like to dine outside. The food. I don't have words for how delicious everything was. My boyfriend and I went to Mishqui on Monona Drive today. Food was good but we received an unpleasant surprise on the bill where the total was more than $70 when it should have been about $60. I asked for a breakdown of the bill and was not happy to see an 18% "gratuity" (over $10) added to our bill for TWO people. This was not on the menu, nor was it listed anywhere in the restaurant. The definition of a gratuity is a "gift" given freely. This was not given freely, nor were they going to tell us about it had I not asked to see a breakdown of the bill. We will not be back. PS: the only reason this is a 3 star review and not a 1 star review is because the food was good. read more
