    Bourbon chicken
    Von W.

How in the world does this place get 4.5 stars? For years I've passed by this restaurant and never had a desire to drop in. However, the pandemic is really impacting the quality of our go-to Chinese spot (i.e., Chinese Tea Garden, of course), and we were looking for alternative sources. After researching Yelp, we decided to try Hunan, solely based on the reviews. Oh, Yelp. These reviews remind me of a trip I took to NY a few years ago and almost every restaurant I went to, based on Yelp reviews, was a disappointment. So, are locals reviewing Hunan? I don't think I'm a food snob, but I do have standards. And this ain't it. We ordered the bourbon chicken, General's chicken, and shrimp fried rice. The best thing were the egg rolls. They were fried golden and had a decent flavor. They were a bit one note, though, with mostly all cabbage and 1 or 2 shrimp. Why do I think most of these restaurants buy this stuff frozen and all they do is heat it up? Anyway, the bourbon chicken didn't look like chicken. That was the first strike. Secondly, it didn't taste good. Strike two. The General's chicken was slightly better, but didn't taste like anything like General's chicken. The shrimp fried rice was just ok. Strike three and four. Next!

    Curry chicken and chicken lo-mein

I got the chicken lo mein and curry chicken from this restaurant. They were both delicious and averagely priced for the area. I might have found my new favorite Chinese take-out place! The lo mein tastes almost pan fried. It wasn't drowning in sauce, but the flavor was all in the noodles. The curry was yummy too, with the vegetables not being overcooked at all. The chicken was plentiful, soft and tender for both dishes. They didn't skimp at all! The curry here was not very spicy, so be sure to ask for extra heat if that's what you're into! Pick-up was quick (15 minutes for the food to be ready after placing the order), easy and pandemic-safe (a small window to accept your food and pay for it, so you don't have to go into the restaurant at all). My only complaint is that the neighborhood seems a little dicey. I went to pick-up my food with my boyfriend close to 10pm, and I didn't feel completely safe. (Nothing happened though!) I would probably not choose this location to go to alone at night as a young female. I'll just go pick-up for lunch!

Solid, casual Chinese American cuisine w massive portions and super friendly staff. The area is kinda sketchy but it's close to my job and it's quickly become my go to spot as it's open pretty late.

Shrimp and broccoli combo with egg fried rice.

I was craving Asian food literally of any kind and I was scrolling through Yelp and stumbled upon Hunan Wok. I couldn't believe it because honestly I thought it was just a place that my home city had so because of the great experiences I've had back home I decided it was the best I could get on such short notice. I must admit they were pretty ok! Pricing was 10 and some change for the broccoli and shrimp combo (side of rice and an eggroll. Yes i know it's not in the picture but I scarfed it down before it ever had the chance or be included in the trio). The flavoring wasn't bad. Just needed a little more seasoning with Salt and pepper. Luckily they have a parking lot (thank goodness because I get tired of street parking everywhere). I ordered online so once I got there I got my food pretty quickly. Overall not a bad spot and I'd definitely give them another try in the future.

This place is becoming a Christmas tradition for me! I love the fried wings with teriyaki sauce on the side, the egg drop soup is yummy and a side of Steamed Shrimp Dumplings. I prefer to call ahead and pickup. Definitely won't disappoint!

Rather than pursuing a burger, I decided to try this well regarded Chinese restaurant across the street from my hotel. This review is based on one item I got for takeout: Szechuan Beef. I am never one to equate quantity with quality. I'm also not well-versed in authentic Chinese. I'm mostly familiar with American Chinese. I ordered Szechuan beef expecting a dry stir fry of beef strips tossed with dried Szechuan peppers. Instead I got a 1 quart container with a zesty, moderately spicy broth loaded with tender strips of melt-in-your-mouth beef. This was pure heaven, and was an explosion of tangy flavor. The quart could've easily served a family of 4. That would just require another side of rice. This was just outstanding! The restaurant was compact yet inviting and service was great. I placed my takeout order on site at the counter, but they have table service.

I've eaten here before and the food is decent, which makes this experience even more disappointing…read more I ordered a dish with shrimp and simply asked to substitute broccoli for the rice. When the bill arrived, I noticed I had been charged extra for the broccoli and also charged for shrimp--even though shrimp was already the protein included in the menu item I ordered. I politely questioned the charge, and the explanation I received didn't seem to match what was stated on the menu. I then asked to speak with a manager so the issue could be addressed. After quite a bit of discussion in the kitchen, the server returned, but instead of a manager coming out, I was given essentially the same explanation we had already discussed. I calmly explained why the charges didn't make sense and expressed that I was unhappy with how the situation was being handled. Unfortunately, there seemed to be little interest in resolving the concern or retaining my business. The food is fine, but my advice is to carefully review your bill before paying. Based on my experience, management does not appear particularly concerned when customers raise billing issues.

Back again in NOLA for more R&D, I chose to reside in the Garden District to also explore an area…read moresomewhat away from the general tourist population swarming the French Quarter. This week I wanted to visit spots successfully catering to locals and stumbled upon this tiny neighborhood hidden gem. Hidden because one would have easily missed it repeatedly when driving (or walking) past since the whole exterior was so unassuming at first glance. It only showed up on my radar when I meticulously searched for seafood spots on different platforms and randomly stumbled on their Facebook page. Best boiled crawfish and shrimp it said. Always fresh it exclaimed. Decently priced it stated. Well, this I had to go see it for myself and put to test. This was obviously a detour from my planned R&D in NOLA but was definitely a spot that must be designed for locals (and random tourists like me). This was confirmed immediately when I stepped in to see a long line of construction workers from the nearby site picking up lunch and some young kids digging into bags of shrimp and crawfish in utter delight. While looking at their sharpie streaked menu, I noticed quite a number of customers striking up conversations with the lady behind the plexiglass like long lost friends as they too picked up food to-go. Yeah, definitely a local friendly spot. Shrimp and crawfish by the pound was CHEAP in comparison to all the places in the area I've been. The best part? After getting back to the AirBnB, I realized just how good and fresh the seafood was! Succulent, very well seasoned, and not severely overcooked (like some spots around here prefer to serve it). I could taste the spices and aromatic vegetables used in the boil and found each bite absolutely tonguegasmic. Came for a pre-lunch snack and now back for a pre-dinner snack. Both the lady and gentleman had a smirk and muffled giggle as they saw me again. "You like it?" No, I love it. I'm here for a week and I'll be back every day you're open until I fly out of here. Take my money and give me thy awesome shrimp!

On our walk from hotel to Walmart, my husband and I stumbled across this little spot. A quick Yelp…read moreand Google check showed great reviews, and even though the photos looked pretty simple, we decided to give it a try. Sometimes that's just how travel works and you cross paths with unexpected gems. The owner and his family couldn't have been nicer. This place has been around for over 30 years, a mix of convenience store and local eatery. The owner, an older Asian gentleman, warmly asked me and my husband where we were from as soon as he saw us. We think maybe because there aren't many Asian in the neighborhood and it instantly felt welcoming and we started to chitchat. His son was helping in the kitchen that day, and the guy taking our order (super friendly, too!) turned out to be his son-in-law, just stopping by on his day off. This place is small but we could tell most of the steady stream of takeout customers were regulars. We ordered about $50 worth of food: * C2 Fried Chicken (10 pcs) - $11.99 * P6 Shrimp Po'boy (12") - $5.99 * P8 Catfish Po'boy (12") - $7.99 * R5 Cajun Gumbo - $8.99 * Two cans of drinks It felt special that on our very first day in New Orleans, we got to try two of the city's most iconic dishes: Gumbo and Po'boys right here in this humble neighborhood spot. The fried chicken was super crispy, the Po'boys were packed with filling, and the gumbo was flavorful without being overly salty. We couldn't finish it all, so the leftovers became our breakfast the next morning. The shop itself is nothing fancy, just two folding tables and a few chairs but the food and the warmth of the people made it one of those memorable stops that really stick with us. We actually came back on our last day in New Orleans and wanted to try the Yak-Ka-Mein Soup which was recommended by the owner but it was closed on Memorial Day:( I guess we will save it for our next visit. If you ever find yourself in the area, I'd highly recommend trying their food. T&T Seafood & Po-Boys 548 Jackson Ave, New Orleans, LA 70130
