The food is absolutely delicious. I live in DC and every time I visit home I get food from this Chinese restaurant. It reminds me of the Chinese food I grew up with in New Orleans. Despite eating Chinese food in DC and New York, New Orleans has always had the best Chinese food I've ever tasted and this little gem knocks those other major cities out of the water. I do not like the fact that they nickel and dime you for every little extra ($1.25 for extra gravy, $.50 for extra sauce, etc) and you also have to ask for vegetables with your boneless chicken. The general to Sal's Chicken has a great flavor just ask for extra sauce. The lo mein is pretty good. Crab rangoons have a great flavor they were just chewy from sitting too long. That might be on me for letting them sit there. The service was fast and friendly especially considering how busy they were in there. How in the world does this place get 4.5 stars? For years I've passed by this restaurant and never had a desire to drop in. However, the pandemic is really impacting the quality of our go-to Chinese spot (i.e., Chinese Tea Garden, of course), and we were looking for alternative sources. After researching Yelp, we decided to try Hunan, solely based on the reviews. Oh, Yelp. These reviews remind me of a trip I took to NY a few years ago and almost every restaurant I went to, based on Yelp reviews, was a disappointment. So, are locals reviewing Hunan? I don't think I'm a food snob, but I do have standards. And this ain't it. We ordered the bourbon chicken, General's chicken, and shrimp fried rice. The best thing were the egg rolls. They were fried golden and had a decent flavor. They were a bit one note, though, with mostly all cabbage and 1 or 2 shrimp. Why do I think most of these restaurants buy this stuff frozen and all they do is heat it up? Anyway, the bourbon chicken didn't look like chicken. That was the first strike. I got the chicken lo mein and curry chicken from this restaurant. They were both delicious and averagely priced for the area. I might have found my new favorite Chinese take-out place! The lo mein tastes almost pan fried. It wasn't drowning in sauce, but the flavor was all in the noodles. The curry was yummy too, with the vegetables not being overcooked at all. The chicken was plentiful, soft and tender for both dishes. They didn't skimp at all! The curry here was not very spicy, so be sure to ask for extra heat if that's what you're into! Pick-up was quick (15 minutes for the food to be ready after placing the order), easy and pandemic-safe (a small window to accept your food and pay for it, so you don't have to go into the restaurant at all). My only complaint is that the neighborhood seems a little dicey. I went to pick-up my food with my boyfriend close to 10pm, and I didn't feel completely safe. (Nothing happened though!) I was craving Asian food literally of any kind and I was scrolling through Yelp and stumbled upon Hunan Wok. I couldn't believe it because honestly I thought it was just a place that my home city had so because of the great experiences I've had back home I decided it was the best I could get on such short notice. I must admit they were pretty ok! Pricing was 10 and some change for the broccoli and shrimp combo (side of rice and an eggroll. Yes i know it's not in the picture but I scarfed it down before it ever had the chance or be included in the trio). The flavoring wasn't bad. Just needed a little more seasoning with Salt and pepper. The offerings are typical of your "American-hood" Chinese joint but there's something a little extra about this one. They know how to hook up the chicken, never too dry, and their flavors are nice and well balanced. Lately I've been hooked on their honey chicken combo with shrimp fried rice accompanied with the egg roll all for under $10?! No wonder I had that 6lb swing this week. And ordered 2 dinners Hunan chicken and shrimp with shrimp fried rice and Szechuan chicken and shrimp (generous portions) . There were like two or three tiny farm raised tasteless shrimp probably grown in Indonesia or elsewhere! We found both the entree's had a kick but not much flavor! The General Tso's Tofu here is incredible. Breaded and with the perfect amount of sauce. If you want a lighter option then the garlic tofu is crispy withput breading and with way more vegetables. Not a negative to me but it's worth noting it's not spicy and is very much americanized chinese food. Sometimes that's what hits the spot though. read more

Since moving to New Orleans, I've been searching for a solid Chinese take-out spot. I am happy to say that I think I've found it! A couple nights ago, I had a serious hankering for some sesame chicken. I had tried a couple of spots in New Orleans and hadn't been impressed, so I hopped on Yelp to see if there was a new place I should try. I found Hunan Wok's page and the reviews were all so positive that I had to obviously place an order. All the hype from the other reviews were totally on point and Hunan Wok did NOT disappoint. I put an order in at around 5:30 on a Monday night and they told me that my order was ready for pick up by 5:45pm. I was blown away at how quickly they had it ready. I hopped in my car and was on my way. I realized once I got there that I had passed Hunan Wok multiple times and never thought anything of it. It's basically a bright pink shack and looks rather unassuming, but those are always the best places aren't they? There is some parking right in front and around the side but not a ton. Once you go inside, there are a couple of tables, but nobody that was in there was dining in. The tables and chairs are mostly there so that you can sit while waiting for your food. Service was fast and friendly. We ordered a sesame chicken combo plate with pork fried rice (it's only an extra .75 cents if you want shrimp fried rice), two egg rolls (one pork and one shrimp), their triple steamed dumplings, and an order of their fried shrimp appetizer. The portions are HUGE and the total only came out to $25. What a steal. We didn't order any vegetarian friendly options, but I did notice that they had plenty. We will definitely be ordering from Hunan Wok anytime we are in the mood for some tasty Chinese take-out! read more

I've been coming to this place for months and the quality is not the best and unfair to customers. Chinese food is getting more expensive for the cheap quality of service and food being provided. While the service is so-so, the lady who works the register isn't very pleasant. My recent visit heavily disappointed me because I paid $14+ for a lunch sized container of shrimp fried rice and bourbon chicken. They up charge 1.25 for shrimp fried rice and I only had 4 small shrimps, the portion is less than what you would get in a normal styrofoam plate DINNER. This was a dinner plate and I got a lunch-sized portion. The bourbon chicken was not cooked properly nor did it taste good. I've ordered the pepper steak and also had the same experience of it tasting bland, not good and packaged poorly. Use the money you'd have spent here or at any other Chinese restaurant and cook it yourself, or order out Vietnamese or Japanese where the quality is ALWAYS significantly better as well as taste. Only thing worth purchasing is a pint or quart of shrimp fried rice. read more

The food is AWESOME. The prices are very reasonable. The portion size of each meal is enough for 2 people to eat and receive satisfaction. The best thing to do is to call your order in because each meal is made to order. My personal favorite is the sesame chicken meal which includes shrimp fried and an egg roll.
