Crystal to the rescue on her first day as manager and she totally rocked!!! We were assigned another server, the delightful and funny Esti (sp). She touched base with us , ensured that our order was hot and ready and was just a consummate professional. We also had the pleasure of meeting Stephanie, the regional manager who was apologetic and accommodating. Afterwards Stephanie came out with a birthday Ms. Shirley's Swag Bag which made the experience personalized and the gesture much appreciated. My mom and I visited this restaurant years ago and I've been wanting to get back ever since. Visited for the first time...it was the Monday after Christmas at 2 PM and we were lucky to find the last table. It was crowded and it took a bit to be noticed, but everything turned out just fine. Our taste buds were elated. We went on the light side with orders of chicken and corn chowder and Shirley's gumbo. Both were outstanding. My sweet potato quinoa salad was surprisingly delicious and a great accompaniment for the gumbo. My wife found the fried green tomatoes to be good...but not the best that she has ever tasted. A bit gummy, she said. The service turned out to be pretty good and attentive. We also went with the cocktails, both refreshing: a Kentucky strawberry lemonade and a Shirley's crush. I ordered the Cy omlett and buttermilk pancakes. Those dishes came with a side of hashbrowns and a biscuit. The hashbrowns were slightly below average and the biscuit was too. However, the omlett, which contains bacon and spinach, was surprisingly delightful! The pancakes were delicious! My server, Roy, was incredibly attentive and personable! There's a reason Miss Shirley's is a cult favorite here in Maryland. The food is delicious! I've never had anything in which I was disappointed. I came to this location with a girl friend after running errands. There was a 30 minute wait, which we expected. They are practicing social distancing, and asked us to wait in the car until we received a text saying our table was ready. They ask you to keep your mask on whenever you are speaking with your server. Our food was very good. I had the Southern Sandwich with Fried Green Tomatoes. The food is always really good, the coffee is always fresh, and they ENSURE no cross contamination if you have someone in your party with an allergen- which is rare. That being said, there are some setbacks. For example, one of my friend's food came out kinda cold, almost like they waited too long to make sure our whole table had their food before bringing his out. The food is as delicious today as it was back then. Since this is an overall review, I'll mention some of my all-time favorites that I highly recommend... Fried green tomatoes that are flavorful, slightly tangy tomatoes with a light batter and a lemon-herb aioli. Amy's Bayou Omelet with shrimp, sausage, tomatoes and cheddar cheese. Definitely my go-to. Stone-ground grits with bacon. As much as I want to snootily say that "I don't eat pork" it's not true! This dish is delish! Hot Brown Sandwich - This one was a favorite that was retired a few years ago. An open-faced turkey sandwich with the thickest, richest, brown gravy. I would love to see them bring this one back. I was told it was better to go during the week but with work, it would be hard. And forgot about the weekends because it would be way too long of a wait. Last Wednesday, I was supposed to serve as a juror but for some reason, they dismissed the jury and I ended up having a whole day off from work. Of course, I finally treated myself to breakfast at Miss Shirley's. I appreciate that they have their own free parking lots. It was busy inside but there wasn't a wait. I was greeted and seated right away. My server, Bill was great. Very friendly and cautious, making sure to ask if I had any food allergies. I started off with a mimosa. It was very refreshing and delicious. The right amount of champagne and juice. I ordered the South of the Border 3 egg omelet, which came with side and a biscuit. I chose a side of collard greens w/ tasso ham. Everything was muy delicioso! The pico de gallo and guacamole tasted so fresh. The omelet was very filling. The greens were quite tasty as well. I couldn't finish them so I took them home. I was very pleased during my visit and I'm so excited to come back again. We have been meaning to come here for a while and today we decided to celebrate our Wedding Aniversary here. We came around noon, they were steady with a good amount of customers sitting inside and outside, we chosed inside and all the tables were spaced out. The Hostess was very welcoming, we were promptly seated and our Waiter Bill greeted us and took out Drink orders. I ordered the Shirley Temple and it was so delicious it was my first time tasting it. We ordered a variety of dishes, I really loved Grandpa's Cornbread, it was moist, light with Corn kernels in it and the Jalapeño Butter spread paired well with it. Everything else was good. They will text you when it is almost your turn. Service can be slow sometimes. The food is good, but nothing out of the ordinary. I had their pancakes which were fine. The deviled eggs appetizer is good. Their eggs and bacon are standard but eggs were overcooked. The Biscuit is okay but hash browns were good and piping hot. So it seemed like a stop here would be almost a no-brainer. Peach & Goat Cheese Biscuits ($5.99) w/ Strawberry-Jalapeño jam I thought these were pretty tasty overall, but the goat cheese flavor was a bit muddled in the mix. Also they were overworked in the kitchen, as they were too dense. However, I absolutely adored the strawberry-jalapeño jam; great strawberry flavor with a nice subtle jalapeño flavor without any heat. Biscuits 3* Jam 5* Southern Slammer ($13.99) Carissa got this, and of course I had to have a few bites. I honestly though it was just OK for a sandwich that was dubbed "Best Breakfast Sandwich in America" by Restaurant Hospitality Magazine. The flavors were muted, and nothing really stood out. The hash browns that came with this were also very bland. 2* Shirley's Affair with Oscar ($34.99[Market price]) This creation was named "Best Breakfast Dish in Maryland" by Food Network Magazine and one can see why: lump crab meat, Angus filet mignon, bacon grits, asparagus and topped with a Hollandaise sauce. First of all, I'm not complaining abut the taste because it was actually quite good overall―not "best dish" good, but very good. The filet was delicious, tender and cooked perfectly med-rare per my request and the crab was, well, crabby and the grits were just ok―the bacon got lost somewhere in all the blandness. I guess my biggest qualm was with the amount of crab. For a dish that cost $35 there was literally only 1-2oz of actual crab; please compare my pic with the one they have posted on their Yelp page here: https://goo.gl/9B2SGN Classic sign of false advertising; now we're used to this from disreputable restaurants like McShitz and other fast food places, but I wouldn't expect this from a place with a stellar rep in the food world. I really wanted to like MSC and I'm probably sitting on a 2.5* review, but two feels more "right" than three. Over the top breakfast place. I love it. First time there with my daughter going to Loyola. It's within walking distance to campus which is nice. We had a little wait which I hear is normal. Service was very friendly. Spicy Bloody Mary was definitely spicy. We got the HOT HONEY FRIED CHICKEN DEVILED EGGS which were super delicious. I could have stopped there but no. I also had the SOUTHERN SLAMMER SANDWICH with the grits. This sandwich was pretty good not amazing. The grits seemed almost like a rice pudding versus what I've had before (I'm not a southerner) but they were tasty. My daughter had the GRAVY TRAIN SOUTHERN SKILLET and holy chicken! While in town for a wedding, we headed here to try this spot for lunch after reading all the rave reviews. We got there around 9:45am and were seated quickly which was a big plus as this place gets crowded fast! Cool, comfy environment with a massive brunch menu. Service was good t/o and I got my coffee almost immediately after sitting down - big plus! I tried the crab cake and fried green tomato benedict - it's market price so be prepared to spend alot more than your typical benedict (which I wasn't prepared for). A hearty meal - I was stuffed and could barely finish one of the benedicts. Well flavored crab cake and overall really good dish. I tried a goat cheese peach biscuit for $5 on the side which was good though not stellar. My husband got an omelet with crab as well. Overall, solid brunch. read more

I hate that because we try a variety of restaurants all year that we only come to Miss Shirley's once per year. I gotta make an effort to make it more often, the food is so good. From the fried green tomatoes to the Maryland omelette, I have never had a bad bite. The staff is attentive, knowledgeable of the menu and will to offer suggestions when you can't make a decision. Food is always delicious. This is the second time I've been here and it has great food. Their menu options are unique and you can't find them anywhere else. It has a southern, homey feel. There were some things I did not like though. The biscuits my table got were very underbaked, they seemed to have large, visible chunks of butter in them. This made me feel kind of gross after eating my meal. I also was not a fan of the hash brown style. They are not crispy or golden at all. I got the healthy scramble and it was very good. We ordered the Cuban sandwich as well as the pineapple upside down pancakes, coffee and an alcoholic beverage. We received 3 large sized pancakes with pineapples mixed in with the batter. They were very good and sweet, it was just a lot for myself alone. My partner had the sandwich and said it was okay but really enjoyed the hash browns. This was the most expensive breakfast we've ever had and left the majority of the food because I had no plans on traveling with pancakes n sandwich in the car all day. Our bill came to $54 that morning. This is usually the amount we spend on dinner for the two of us because we typically share a meal because we don't eat a lot. We've been to Miss Shirley's a couple of times before and for some reason we were overwhelmed by all of the choices. After the fifth time our server asked if we were ready to order, we settled on mostly breakfast. We arrived at 1 on a Saturday afternoon which seems to be an off peak period. We had a couple of orders of the speciality pancakes (chocolate chip and banana chocolate chip) with eggs and andouille sausage on the side. Eggs were cooked perfectly and no syrup needed for the pancakes as they were loaded with chocolate! Some of the best Andouille sausage I've tasted! The Seafood Caesar Salad was also excellent.
