When you're in search of a hearty and filling breakfast, Miss Shirley's should be at the top of your list! This hidden gem never fails me and each time I visit, I make it my mission to try something new. This time we visited on a Wednesday morning and parking was a breeze and there was no wait! *Pro Tip, I highly recommend you try out a weekday visit when you can* Normally I order coffee, but this time we ordered 2 Miss Mimosas. The champagne to orange juice ratio was a little off but still palatable. Normally, I would The fried deviled eggs caught my attention immediately...so you know we had to order. I highly, HIGHLY recommend this appetizer. It was honestly the sausage gravy for me ! For our main courses we ordered the Fiesta N' Siesta Skillet with a side of banana pancakes, and Eddie's Two Cage Free Eggs (I got scrambled with cheese and green onion). The eggs also came with a side of bacon, grits, and an everything biscuit. The eggs were a little dry but the grits were out of this world ! Let me preface this review by saying my husband was a career bartender/waitperson. I have high respect for people providing food service. I took my best friend from Jr High, visiting from Memphis for our 50 year "anniversary," to Miss Shirley's on Cold Spring. I considered Rusty Scupper and Blackwall Hitch but decided on Miss Shirley's, confident it would be a high point of our visit. Boy, was I wrong. The food was delicious, so this is not a poor review of the chefs. The service was poor, but this isn't a poor review primarily for that. It was upper management who brought the final check for me to sign that made a less than good experience absolutely horrendous. I was literally nauseated by his demeanor- he was offensive to the senses in every way imaginable. The first thing he said was I "made his waitress cry." If his staff was "back in the kitchen crying," that is not for him to bring to my table. I had VERY politely told Maya that we were disappointed in our service, from the fact I had to get up and go looking for pancake syrup 10 minutes after asking for it, to the fact 15 mins after asking for coffee that was hot instead of warm, did not have that either. Maya finally reappeared at our table 15 minutes after our request for hot coffee and extra syrup, to ask if the soft - scrambled eggs (as we initially ordered) that had been brought out by the kitchen, were good. She apologized profusely about the coffee when we asked again to get that, saying she had "forgotten." When I told her I had to literally go looking for syrup she "assured" us this was not her usual service. That may be true, but this was my first time at Miss Shirley's, and we were disappointed. When she brought the $65 check, I did let her know the quality of our service would be reflected in my tip and that her manager would see my review online. I was polite and thought she deserved an explanation of what was to come. I am a tenured professor of over 20 yrs at a local public university, and have had young adults cry in my office many times, so I cannot fault the manager for his concern for Maya. What I can and DO fault him for is his overbearing bullying as he tried to put words in my mouth, literally telling me how well she had waited on us because she had come by to see about the eggs, cutting me off when I tried to tell him what had transpired with the coffee, the syrup, and the fact Maya never would have even known the eggs were wrong if I had not raised and waved my hand as she finished taking an order at the adjacent table. You see, she never came by after our food arrived to see if we needed anything. We waited over 10 minutes for that to happen, too, BTW. To iterate, I've seen many a young person be unable to face the consequences of their shortcomings, but I have never gone to my administrators who employ me to uphold the standards of our institution, and berate them for having those standards. In fact I would have tipped her $8 instead of the usual 25-30% that I tip as a matter of pride in my husband's legacy, but after being berated in front of the entire room for "mistreating" Maya, I told the manager the quality of the service would be mirrored by a $2 tip, which it was. He continued to bear over me, still talking, until I stood up to simply face him down. It was absolutely appalling. That was really not the worst of it, as shocking as that might sound. He trailed immediately behind me as we walked toward the door, literally on my heels, as if we were shoplifters. My friend said it felt like a walk of shame. I turned around and tried to say that my husband was a career waitperson and bartender and that he taught me long ago to always appreciate service and tip well, but this nauseating bully of a manager cut me off one last time - he just had to have the last word - sarcastically saying "Have a nice day"!! To summarize, I had high expectations for Miss Shirley's, and the food was very good, but the service was poor and the manager's treatment bordered on abuse. read more

I learned about this place on Food Network and have been here too many times to even count. So I dabble with fitness. As a result I was looking forward to my cheat meal at Ms. Shirleys all week. I had been a few times before but I had to write a review this time because I was not disappointed. There was a bit of a wait but I anticipated because good food spots are always crowded. After 45 minutes, our buzzer went off and it was our turn to eat. This was not too long of a wait as they had accurately quoted about 50 minutes. We were seated at a comfortable booth which worked out great because I was about to order pretty much everything. Ambiance/vibe: the restaurant is not super fancy but very quaint. The place is well lit and not so loud that I could t catch up with my friends. The restroom was very clean. All types of people were there. Friends hanging out, families celebrating and the everyday neighborhood regulars were there. Overall great vibe and experience. Service: let me just say that I am very indecisive however our server was very patient and helped me make really good decisions. All of our food was hot and correct. I was actually impressed because again we ordered a lot of food. Food: we went during vegan week. One of my friends we met up with chose the restaurant as a result of him being vegan and the restaurant was very accommodating. I however ordered the works. I typically avoid breakfast foods since I feel they can be easily recreated at home at fraction of the price but the chicken and waffles were very unique and perfectly cooked. The waffles had green onion in them which sounded strange but worked out well. My friend ordered the coconut cream French toast which was decadent but not too overpowering. I came here with a friend for brunch and I ordered a banana chocolate pancake. WOW!! It was so delicious and the portion size was huge! I was able to save half of it to enjoy later, and it was still delicious. My friend ordered the chicken and waffles with a cup of black coffee. They don't have a variety of coffee and tea drinks here, just straight black coffee with creamer and sugar and regular tea. The brunch menu is extensive though. Our go-to breakfast joint in the Baltimore area. We found it listed in the Best of Baltimore magazine listed under "Best Breakfast in Maryland," and we've found it to be true. Try any dish with their signature creamy grits, loaded with cream and bacon. You can never go wrong with any of the Benedict dishes and anything with the word "southern" in the name or description. And don't forget a side of buttermilk pancakes with real maple syrup, not that plastic stuff. They are to die for. One of my regrets upon leaving Maryland is missing out on Miss Shirley's, but I was back this week and was not disappointed. Go during the week to avoid weekend lines. Everyone knows that Miss Shirley's is one of Baltimore's very best, so I'm gonna skip ahead and say that our service this weekend was stellar! We came at prime time on a Sunday but were promptly seated at an outdoor table like requested within 10 minutes. Our server Mikayla (sp?) was so warm but also super chill --she made our experience all the better! We opted for the restaurant week menu and it was my first time ordering lunch. I got the deviled eggs and fried chicken sandwich, but also tried the pulled pork sandwich. Everything was DELICIOUS! I'm not usually a fan of deviled eggs, but these were a whole other experience... As if the crunchy breading on the outside wasn't enough, they had a filling with fried chicken bits in it --like what?!? I'm sold on these eggs forever! Great customer service and wonderful food. Our server was Royce. She was awesome and each time we needed something she and the staff servers were more than happy to please. The manager walks around and speaks with customers about their experience. The wait was good. Parking is hard to fine but it's there if you get it. I parked and paid for my time in the parking meter. I just moved to Baltimore, and lots of people told me that I had to have brunch at Miss Shirley's! So I did! I went for breakfast with my husband, mom, and stepdad last week. This Roland Park restaurant is the original (although it used to be smaller), but Miss Shirley's has other locations (Inner Harbor, Annapolis, BWI). I love its local story! I also love that they have a vegan menu, because my mom is vegan! For vegan breakfast options they offer avocado toast, mango vanilla oatmeal, grapefruit brulee, and more. My mom really enjoyed the avocado toast (avocado mash, red grape tomatoes, and red onion on sourdough toast with fresh chives and everything bagel seasoning). The rest of us ordered from their extensive non-vegan menu. I shared the Maryland Omelet with my stepdad - it has jumbo lump crab meat, tomato, and Swiss cheeses, and is dusted with Old Bay - yummy. My husband got the Amy's Bayou Omelet (blackened shrimp, chorizo, tomato, and white cheddar cheese and dusted with Cajun spices), which was good, too! The omelets are three-egg omelets and come with a house-made everything biscuit and your choice of shredded potato and onion hash browns or grits with bacon, so I was glad to be sharing with someone! It's a lot of food! The grits were good, but the hashbrowns had no color on them at all (if you like your hash browns crispy like I do make sure to tell them)! I added a side of ham for $5, and it was a little small for the price but had great flavor. It was Sunday afternoon and we had a half hour wait, but it was worth it. I'm not in town very often, but this is on the top of my list the next time I'm here. I tried the other location at the harbor the last time I was here, and the quality and service is consistent and very well done. Finally we approached the hostess and informed our table was ready. I ordered vegetarian options, the healthy hot mess with vegan cheese and French toast. Let's start with Yum and work from there. It was my first visit based on the recommendation of my daughter, who wants to go when she comes to town. I went with a friend....shhh don't tell. Anywho, since the weather was lovingly warm the outside seating was in full effect. However, we sat indoors. The place is gorgeous. Tastefully decorated. They also had SPACE. I cannot say how impressed I was that the seating is not crammed together. The walkways are wide. Chris was our server. He did a good job. Even answered my yelp questions from the check-in. I ordered the coconut cream stuffed French toast and hash browns. My friend ordered the chicken and waffles. Welp, my plate was HUMUNGOUS. The flavors were great. The plate also had banana slices and strawberry bits as decorations. Side Note: the description does say that it has coconut flakes on it. If you do not want coconut flakes on top, tell your server when you order. My oh my did I get coconut flakes. The plate was drowning in it. Took me 10 minutes to try to scrape them off. But remember my plate was full so there really wasn't any place to put the pile. The coconut cream also has flakes in it, but it's just so creamy and flavorful. My hash browns weren't toasty brown looking, as you would usually find, but they weren't bad. I had a small taste and took it home. My friend did not like her meal at all. She said the chicken was dry and the plain waffle she ordered had a savory taste to it. So I tasted her food. The chicken was less than moist, but I like my chicken that way. I guess she likes hers dripping in oil. What I didn't like was the adobo taste to it. Her waffle did have a savory, onion/garlicky taste to it. I did alert Chris, who promptly took the dish away and offered something different, which she declined. Now here's where it gets interesting. The manager came to our table and apologized and also offered something different. I was extremely impressed by that. In any event, I loved my food. Took so much of it home I had enough for breakfast today. Yay Me!!! When I was packing up my food, Chris brought me a take home menu and extra syrup for my French toast. He definitely earned his tip. Will I visit again? HECK YEAH, I gotta go when my child comes to town and pretend like it's my first time going. Tips and Recommendations: You will find a mini menu card at the table telling you to join the brunch club. I like savings, so I asked Chris and he brought the card to our table. Also, it's very hard to get parking on Cold Spring. It's literally one lane in each direction. It's cramps and the street is metered. My girlfriend and I decided to do lunch today and she mentioned Miss Shirley's. Great choice I might add! I had gone to the downtown location previously and didn't care for it for some reason but was willing to give this location a chance. The place was very busy and I noticed that they were on Diners, Drive In's and Dives so the food had to be good then lol. I chose the Bay O Po Boy, watermelon and feta salad and the Bourbon Peach Lemonade. My girlfriend got the Get Your Grits On, white chocolate pancakes and Bourbon Peach Lemonade. I must say everything was delicious! Every single thing. The only critique I have is the chibata bread for the Po Boy was just too hard. I typically love miss Shirley's. Love their waffles and chicken, but decided to try something new last time i went. My friend got the Maryland omelette which comes with crab meat and hash browns. I got the southern slammer sandwich which comes with avocado, green tomatoes, bacon, on pumpernickel bread. We also ordered mimosas. The mimosas had pulp and were very bitter. The omelette was in flavorful despite the amount of table salt and pepper added. The sandwich was soggy and unflavorful. I don't know if the day we went was off day but usually miss Shirley's food is pretty good, so this was a disappointment. read more

It deeply saddens me to have to be writing this review on one of me and my mother's favorite brunch spots. My Miss Shirley's experience in Roland Park left me with a bad taste in my mouth this afternoon. (3/14/2025) We were there to celebrate my mother's birthday. It's kind of a ritual of ours. Our server was Sophia and I tried to let this go, but hours later I am still a bit disgusted with my experience today. Sophia asked if there were any questions pertaining to the menu. My mother follows a vegan lifestyle and asked to see the vegan menu before hand. I attempted to ask a question when I was then cut off with a question that had nothing to do with my interests. Sophia interjected with a question assuming my question pertained to the "chicken and waffles." Because I am of African American descent I immediately felt offended and stereotyped especially because my question was completely different. After my mom brought it to her attention about how it came across she did apologize but I felt as if the service went downhill from there. I did have interest in expressing this experience to the manager but my mother requested that I didn't. After reflecting on it for the rest of the day it still just needs to be brought to the attention of others. I have NEVER had an experience like this at Miss Shirley's before but this time sealed the deal. I'm not actually sure if we will be returning. On top of that the food wasn't as good as it usually is but that might have been because my appetite was ruined. Moral of the Story is please don't lead with assumptions. Whether harm is meant or not treat people the way you want to be treated. The golden rule is you will. I hope others will have a better experience. read more

Well ok we were headed to DC but definitely worth the detour. I had the Chicken and Waffles and it was BY FAR THE BEST I HAVE EVER HAD!! I've heard about this place so much and decided to stop by for brunch on a Saturday morning. I was very lucky enough to find a parking spot on the street and there was a pretty minimal wait since I believe they do not take reservations. I ordered the Shrimp and Grits and a Mimosa. It was very tasty and I would certainly order it again. It comes with fried green tomatoes which were tasty as well. Service was nice and friendly. I would say the restaurant was pretty packed! So I recommend getting there early. I love that they have all of their drinks out on display at the front so you can actually SEE the drink before you decide to order it. This was my first time deciding to try Miss Shirley's on a Saturday morning. When you walk in it has a sort of family feel to the environment. I was greeted at the front desk and seated immediately no wait at all. Our original table was a little small for my liking so we sat at a table to our left. Erica introduced herself as our waitress very pleasantly. I asked her recommendations and she gave them to me with pleasant ease. She suggested the apple cider mimosas which was a great choice! Amazing. It had a nice fall feel to it. I chose the buffalo shrimp deviled eggs for my appetizer. As we sipped on the mimosas Erica continuously asked if we were ok and how our food was. We chose to order Amy's Bayou omelet and garden omelet for entrees. Delicious! The atmosphere was very chill yet chic. It wasn't terribly crowded but it was several people eating this morning.
