Really great food and really great customer service. With how you are treated, you wouldn't even know you were dining at a national chain restaurant. It says a lot about a business when they're able to make it feel like a neighborhood joint. While I don't eat BBQ often, Mission is always my first choice and glad there is a location in Columbia. You get a lot of food for the price and the quality is always consistent, plus each location is decorated differently with so much history on the walls. Of course, the stand out stars at Mission are their signature sauces. I can't get enough of the Tupelo hot honey and KC classic. I haven't looked into it, but they should bottle this stuff up and sell it. I know I would be one of the first in line. read more

If you're in the Columbia area and craving BBQ apparently this is the place to go. I really enjoy their loose cut brisket and cold slaw. I've also had their baby back ribs which is okay. There doesn't seem to be a consistency..sometimes it's dry sometimes it's tender. I guess it depends on their mood. They do have different flavors of bbq sauce for you to choose from but we prefer to stick to the original. Also, double check your bag if you're carrying out. Really good. Pretty large selection of meats, 'doneness', sauces, preps, etc. Sides also. This is cafeteria style, so you go to the front counter, order, and then sit down and they bring your food to you. The BBQ meats in general really are good. As are the sides, though they can be mushy (but not always) like restaurant sides usually are. Service has always been great for us. We tend to go with friends so we'll have 6-8 people. We enjoyed the pulled pork sandwich for $7.49. It is large and moist. You need to add BBQ sauce for seasoning. There is a choice of 6 sauces to choose from. Unfortunately, the entree for salmon was small and not worth $10.79. It also came with a small piece of cornbread. There is no side included and must be purchased separately. The meal would be better and filling if a side was included in the price. It's best to stick to the sandwiches here so you won't be still hungry. read more

I have no idea how this place has 4.5 stars on Yelp. This was one of the most mediocre, run of the mill BBQ places that I have ever been to - and I'm from North Carolina so I've had a lot of barbecue. Pros: - fast friendly service - meat was decent quality Cons: - they have six different sauces and they all taste like nothing. Just a sweet glaze of nothingness. If I had to choose, I would go with the Missouri sauce but that's like choosing between a poop sandwich and a pee slushee - sides were bad: baked beans were basically a sweet stew with a few beans in it, green beans were whatever - can't really screw up canned beans - cornbread was dry and not tasty, only got through two bites before tossing it - the whole vibe of the place was super weird. You can hear the country music blaring from the parking lot, and then you walk in and it's the most homogenous crowd of people eating there that you've ever seen. And then there's the compulsory "worship the flag" moment at noon, luckily I showed up at 2 pm If you like good bbq, look elsewhere. read more

Been here a few times for lunch, and the BBQ is consistently good, the service consistently friendly and fast, and I love the down home atmosphere. and vibe. I usually go with the moist brisket which is loaded with flavor and has a perfect smoke ring on it. The smashed potatoes were good but not great- could have used some pepper personally. The corn bread can get dry sometimes depending on the day. The staff always greats you with a friendly smile- and there are not many fast casual places that the manager will go around and check on how your food is, and then offer to take away your empty tray. This place is excellent given it's a chain and the food comes out lickety split! A few weeks ago I was at Wayward Smokehouse, which is a one-off restaurant, and I have to say Mission's brisket is on par, IF NOT better, than Wayward. Pricing is good, $8.99 for the brisket, which is the priciest type of individual meat. All the meats come with a side of quite delicious cornbread (a sweet variety). I like that you can get the brisket lean or fatty (moist). I ordered the moist brisket and a side of green beans. The food was ready before I could finish filling a cup with water! I took it to a table and settled in to eat. I sampled a few BBQ sauces before choosing the Memphis Belle, which is sweet yet tangy, very good. It was amazing with the brisket, which was indeed moist and fatty, just how I like it. The green beans were very good too. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal which came in around $12. Great value. I give Mission 4 stars however because I'm not a fan of having to stand for the National Anthem at noon. Do what you want, but don't force patrons to do it. Jeez. read more

Normally meals are tasty and top notch. Not today though. First they got my order wrong. I ordered 2 lean briskets and was given "moist", fatty brisket. The cashier ranged it up wrong and I didn't realize their error until I got home. The brisket was extremely fatty and we ended up discarding more than half of both orders. I got there just when the restaurant opened so they were not busy. We definitely feel we did not get our money's worth. My husband and I were craving barbecue today. We had looked at variety of different places and decided on mission barbecue because it was far closer. We called to order but there was some confusion with our order and the pickup location (Which is totally fine.) We just ordered there. As someone who has been to many barbecue restaurants, I feel I can say that I know good barbecue. Unfortunately, mission is not it. I got the ribs, brisket, sausage, Mac and cheese, and green beans. The brisket was surprisingly dry for it being moist. It was chewy and rubbery. The ribs were decent even though they really needed the sauce. The sides were okay as well. Going to mission barbecue is like going to McDonald's when you want a burger. Yes, it will do the job but you know it's not as good as it can be. read more

Delicious bbq as you would expect from mission, but the staff needs some help. Let me say, I've been to several mission bbqs including the annapolis location and my usual hangout glen burnie. All of them serve wonderful bbq that I absolutely love. What this location lacks is the friendly atmosphere, enthusiasm, and helpfulness. At the glen burnie location people will offer to help with your trays if your hands are full, clear your table, and stop by to check on things. In Columbia, none of that happened. In fact, I had to wait at the front twice for close to 5 minutes for a lid. Were they super busy? No. Quite the opposite, only a few people were there. With nobody in line you'd expect a simple request like a lid to be something they could handle quickly, but that sadly wasn't the case. At the much better organized glrn burnie location they can be slammed but still give even my 11 year old a lid. Another example happened when they welcomed someone. At the glen burnie location there's always a loud "hey folks!" no matter how busy they are. They did it a few times here, but it sounded more forced than anything. I realize the glen burnie location is one of the older locations so they've had more time to work out the kinks. There are more workers there and even one person assigned to help with the dining room. Maybe that is what the Columbia location needs, or if business is slow one of the cashiers can go around and help out. They had trouble handing only a few orders and requests at once, I can't imagine what a lunch or dinner rush looks like here. read more

I used to eat here all the time. I still do when I'm in town. I was here a month ago, and honestly this place is always busy and doesn't need my review, but I'm going to give it anyway. I get my usual two-meat platter with pork and moist brisket. I always get two sides and a drink. The sides are usually fries and one of the seasonal items. The fries are used to determine which bbq sauce my mouth is in the mood for each time. The platter comes with cornbread too, which I always save for last and eat with Memphis Belle. I don't like to give away secrets, but my favorite sauces are secret items and are kept at the food counter because they must remain cold. They are the Alabama white and baja. The alabama white is just a nice creamy sauce and the baja has a nice spicy kick. I use these more than the other sauces at the table. And I always make my own arnold palmer with mostly sweet tea with a light touch of lemonade. I never have a complaint with this bbq and I prefer it over most any other place I've ever been. I think the only thing I wish they had was Kansas City style burnt ends. Also the meatloaf is pretty good too when its in season and the special ketchup they give with it is legit. read more

The restaurant was clean and well-organized and the staff was friendly and helpful, but what made our experience exceptional was the manager John. We had 2 octogenarians in our group who were a little baffled by the ordering process, and when he noticed their confusion, he personally walked them through the options even offering samples and highlighting combinations so they could make informed decisions. Once our food arrived, he checked on our satisfaction and returned several times to be sure we didn't need anything else. I like Mission. It's a chain, but it's a good chain. And yes, they have table sauce but you really don't need it. It's some good quality barbecue and their premise is quite solid. They seem to employe quite a few veterans and they're major supporters for the Wounded Veteran's Project. That's awesome. But what really matters is the quality. And here, it's great. I went withthe turkey sandwich and as you can see from the picture, I received a solid portion of thick sliced turkey. Dripping moist, it really didn't need anything on it at all. Thick, tasty and quite filling. Oh, and the mac & cheese was also great. Good and tart cheese with a crunchy top. Fountain drinks include Coke products and iced tea. I have already tried their BBQ in their other location. The two are very similar in feeling and setup. I however, do feel like this restaurant looks a bit more staged. What I mean by staged is, I feel that the props are set up to look similar to their original location. The service is friendly like their other location. The employees are welcoming and very helpful. As far as the food, it is good BBQ! I do have to say it's one of the best BBQ for the area. However, if I compare it to BBQ I have had in the past, down south, I wouldn't say the same thing. I love their sauce selection. I love sauce, so I just dump all the sauces together and dip my BBQ in it. I also like to pour the sauce on my BBQ. It's a messy yet delicious way to approach your BBQ platter. My favorite is the honey based bbq sauce - it's sweet and tangy. The ribs are delicious as always. I cannot say enough great things about our catered retirement party for 110 people. I was a bit nervous about feeding so many people but the food could have fed many more people! It was fantastic. I've never gotten so many compliments from guests regarding how great the food was! From start to finish the catering team was spot on with customer service. Took a shot at the Baby Backs and the Yardbird, not too bad! The baby backs were tender and flavorful and the yardbird was juicy and well seasoned and smoked just right. I had been putting off trying this place because I have been pretty loyal to Famous Dave's and Urban Bar-B-Que, but after reading so many reviews I had to take the plunge. They have 6 different bar-b-que sauces, but I only tried 2, the Texas Twang and the Memphis Belle. One sweet and the other a little spicy. I prefer the sweet over tart and tangy. read more
