I've had a few things at Mission BBQ now, and I definitely would have to go with a solid average bbq rating. It lacks a little spice and boldness, but you can sort-of level that out with the sauces they have. I probably would give it 4 stars, but the last time I went, I got a salad with their pulled chicken on top. The portion of pulled chicken was REALLY meager. I'm talking like 3 full chicken strips-ish portion. The greens and veggies were sort of an afterthought. Also, the dressings choices they had were "Ranch or Italian". I know that your heart is really in the bbq, but if you're gonna serve anything - you might as well put some effort into it. The only other place I've ever been offered a choice of two dressings is the Boy Scout Camps that I worked at. And even there... I thought it a bit riduculous. So I went ahead and made my own dressing. I took some of their Alabama sauce and mixed it with a little of their mustard based bbq sauce. It was pretty decent. Pepsi products on tap don't make me too happy, but that's just preference. If I went back, I certainly would stick to their bbq plates. I've gotten their turkey before, and it was very tender and good. I would not get their pulled chicken again. Even the meagar amount of it was not that tasty. Sorry! This place never disappoints ! I always get the chicken sandwich with my two favorite sides of green beans and Mac & cheese. They also sell beer ! If you dine in, the person working the floor, brings you your food and anything else that you may need. It's very roomy and they also have outside seating. Your food is usually made within five minutes and they keep the food line moving. You should definitely try it if you haven't ! Mission really made in their mission to make good BBQ. This BBQ in a classy, Chipotle-style place. We ordered the following for lunch: 3-meat sampler with beans and Mac & Cheese and the ribs with cole slaw. Both orders came with cornbread. Lots of novelty beer, sodas, and juices. Each table comes with 6 different types of BBQ Sauces Brisket was by far the best. It was moist, tender, and seasoned well, which meant it wasn't necessary for BBQ sauces (if you didn't want it). The next best meat? The sausage. It was plump, juicy and the right amount of salty (because sometimes you get the super bland sausage and other times you get the super over-seasoned, salty sausage, but this one wasn't it). The ribs (not St. Louis) and the pulled chicken were my least favorite because they were dry and needed help via the BBQ sauces. The cornbread wasn't hot, but it was soft and well-made (I'm not a chunky cornbread kinda gal so this was a great fit for me). By far the best was the beans. I normally would never eat beans, even if you tell me you made them from scratch, but these beans? They were tasty and had beef brisket in them! Even overheard the manager telling a customer (who was raving about the chili) that they had 4 types of meat in their chili....totally have to try that. So I don't know if this place is a chain, but they certainly give their best to give it a "local" feel. It was packed on a weekday lunch day, but service was quick. This place is so yummy! The smell of the food hits you as soon as you walk inside. It's heavenly. It is affordably priced. I have eaten there many times and the food never disappoints. They also offer a variety of flavorful sauces for you to choose from. The meats stand well on their own but it's fun to try the sauces to shake things up a little bit. BBQ is my jam! Mission BBQ takes it to another level tho. The decor of the restaurant from outdoor patio space to the military pieces on the wall it's amazing! The smell of hickory as you approach the front doors. The staff is off the chain. I've been to the one in Greenbelt as well and the service was exactly the same which is amazing! I'm a basic BBQ guy and I usually stick to the same thing almost every time, brisket, moist and on a rare occasion I'll order the turkey. It's never knocked my socks off but it is very,very consistent good bbq (brisket and turkey). The turkey has always been moist and the moist brisket is speckled with fat and has good flavor. The sides are all well made. I've had the potato salad, mac'n'cheese and the coleslaw. The coleslaw is light,crisp and not overly dressed. The mac'n'cheese is solid although still not quite like grandma's. The potato salad at this location was a little bit salty, had more celery pieces but still paired well with my brisket. The sauces are all okay and they offer at least six different choices. My favorite is the smoky sauce and the texas twang has that A1 steak sauce bite to it. They serve beer and have a soda fountain as well as a large variety of glass bottled sodas as you walk in. It has a very old school American nostalgia to it. The lemonade that they serve is pretty good and not too sweet. The customer service is good and our food came out pretty quickly. Overall my impression of the Mission franchise is still the same and this location can supply you with that bbq fix you're looking for. read more

I've only eaten here once (compared to the dozens of times I've enjoyed Mission at other locations), but I'm happy to say the quality is consistent. The service was spot on, as well. There was a team member (Ariel?) who was wandering the seating area offering to help, answering questions, etc. The food is amazing, as you'd expect. It's BBQ created from a pilgrimage across this great nation which pulls in all of the very best aspects that can be found out there. What more could an honest carnivore ask for? The parking was kind of tricky, but I can't fault Mission for that. Just be aware when you go, especially if you decide to do so on a busy shopping day, or in inclement weather. You might have to park a ways out and walk (which, again, is fine). Glad to see they can open new stores and still have the same quality cuisine and customer service I would expect! read more

I ventured in with a friend to get some lunch on a very hot Saturday! What to eat but barbecue on a hot Saturday in June! Upon entry, the theme of "mission" hits you immediately! An ode to military and servicemen! Everything is rustic and extremely appropriate for bbq spot! I ordered what my friend was having as he has raves about the pulled chicken sandwich! I ordered fries and coleslaw along side! I then noticed all the bbq sauces at the table and sampled all until I chose one! The sauces cover every region of the US related to bbq: Texas, Kansas City, North Carolina... The food was very good! The pulled chicken was had great smoke flavor and was very tender! He bun was a very fresh brioche and it too was very good! There were plenty of French fries but I was more interested in the coleslaw! The coleslaw was just the right amount of wet, not too soggy and not too tangy! It tasted as if it was prepared that day! Either way, the food was pretty good! After dirtying up at least 10 napkins cleaning my mouth and hands, I was very full with that amount of food given! When ordering carry-out they don't assemble your order until you arrive so you can wind up waiting for a while. Kind of defeats the whole purpose. This is by far my favorite BBQ joint in the area. Friendly service and great atmosphere- I love the military and uniformed services appreciation all over the restaurant. The brisket is top notch with a perfect smoke ring, and the sauces at each table give you a good variety of options to choose from, although the Smoky Mountain sauce wins for me. The mac and cheese is fantastic- baked with a nice dusting of bread crumbs and loaded with flavor. OK, I went for the free sandwich for vets on our day, but I'm a fan of all kinds of BBQ and couldn't miss the opening of a new pit. The "Mission" is American barbecue, heavy emphasis on American and supporting the troops. There is a military truck with a smoker in the bed parked outside, The space is lined with patriotic photos and slogans. It's laid out as a cafeteria line in the back, leading to the soda machines (Pepsi of course - the logo is red, white, and blue) and a room full of distressed wood tables. Canned beer and upscale soft drinks are also available.Q is served without sauce - there is a six pack of squeeze bottles of different regional flavors on the table along with a big bottle of North Carolina style spicy vinegar and a roll of brown paper towels. The sandwich was a generous portion of meat on a dense fresh bun. The slaw topping was nice and crisp, and the beans I chose as a side had good texture but an overly sweet sauce that needed a good splash of the NC vinegar to balance it. The meat was somewhat dry without any taste of smoke, and needed sauce to moisten it. Of the six, my favorite was the Bay-B-Q, with a hint of crab seasoning. So, love the premise, not that crazy about the food as compared to say, Red Hot and Blue. But it beats the heck out of McRib or C-rations. read more

So, before I could get my water poured, they are calling my name. Really? That was actually too quick. Like 30 seconds and my order was called. Grabbed my tray and smiled. Chicken was piled high on my soon to discover soft bun. I spent the next 5 tasting the Barbecue sauces and NC Vinegar Mix'er. My faves are the Bay B Que and the Tupelo Honey Heat. Mixed both with the Vinegar. Not even sure the sandwich needed all that since the pulled chicken is moist and has plenty of flavor. All in all, a great first visit. Just learned there is another in Annapolis. I'll hit that one next. I am a hot box and thought the air was blasting so for some, it may be cold. Bring a jacket just in case. Did someone say BBQ? That was how we were greeted at the door. It totally rocked my world. Why? Because I LOVE it when people are just as excited about food as I am. Once inside, there is a nice sized dining area, it is quite open with booths, and picnic like tables and such. There is a dope selection of sodas, and juices available. Can somebody say Cheerwine? Chile yes! On to the food, lots to choose, from chicken, beef, pork and seafood, yes seafood. The special of the day was a smoked salmon. On this date, I tried the beef brisket, pulled chicken and pork, the salmon, green beans and mac and cheese. The him got a pack with thee meats and a side, plus a rack of ribs. I thought this was an insane amount of food, but when it came out it didn't really seem that way. My salmon was in my opinion a nice healthy piece of fish. It was quite tasty with the smokey flavors, can't say that I have ever experienced anything like that. I'm sad that it is a special, because I would certainly come back for it. I tried the "moist" brisket, which IMHO wasn't, rather, it was quite dry. The pulled pork was alright, but I totally feel it needed to be dressed, it was pretty unremarkable without any sauce. The chicken which I was least excited to try (I mean, I think of pork when you say BBQ) was the most tasty, and just fine as it was. It was juicy and flavorful. The mac and cheese was alright for the locale and the green beans were just okay. The cornbread that came with the meal felt as though it had sat out a wee bit long, it was a bit hard, that was a bummer. I will say that the bread pudding was remarkable. But then again, I could just be bias, because I have yet to find a bread pudding that wasn't for me. All in all Mission BBQ is alright, I think it may be a hit or miss depending or what you order. I had no idea about a Mission BBQ in Laurel or about the new open concept shopping center like Waugh Chapel. I used to be scared of going into Laurel and leery of their junk-a-lunk-a areas but they tore down the old mall and it's nice now! Guess I should get out more. Mission BBQ accommodated a HUGE group. I mean like half the restaurant. Now they don't take reservations. But we were there for a going-away lunch for a military guy who was leaving. So a few people got there early and started grabbing tables and then the staff helped the group move into more tables as they became empty. The person leaving was going to be missed so there was a good turn out. As soon as people first started arriving, the manager had sent one of their guys over to Harris Teeter to get a little cake. I was in laurel helping deliver some Easter egg baskets and I got extremely hungry and excited to be out the house and back in the real world! I drove to my favorite wing spot only to find it closed until further notice. I then went to my favorite pizza spot to also find they closed. Down and in need of sustenance I went on to finish my deliveries while trying to figure out what to eat. I decided to call Mission BBQ. I've never been there, but I figured they would have bbq wings. To my dismay they did not. So I ended up ordering ribs. I'm not big on beef or pork, but during a pandemic I must survive. I ordered and it was semi ready when I arrived. I'm new to this whole pandemic curbside lifestyle so I sat not knowing what to do and finally decided to walk in and grab my food. Walking in was surreal not seeing any customers, but you soon get use to seeing this scene. I grabbed my food and a drink to go. I noticed that the customers didn't really understand what social distancing was and would come to close to me. It's a new set of rules and I understand not everyone will adhere to them right away. I went home and enjoyed a few bones from the ribs. I got every sauce imaginable and loved trying the various sauces on the ribs. I must be honest. I still have the sauces! Overall this was a great little experience. I have since bought a case of wings from the restaurant depot and no longer have to go without.
