Honestly I don't know if they just had a bad day or this is the norm but this may be the worst…read moreresturant food I've ever had. Price point is great but portions are small. The sides come in sauce or condiment size cups. The green beans and macaroni and cheese are decent. The collard greens? Terrible not a pinch of salt or pepper it's as if they forgot if they seasoned it and said whatever they'll be fine. Coleslaw not good just mayo and mustard nothing else. Mac and cheese is just boxed mac and cheese. The brisket was not only dry but also tasteless. The ribs were burnt to the crisp and slathered in bbq sauce. I had the most high hopes for this place as I've seen it for years but this was terrible

Introduction to my date:…read more Continuing my alphabet series representing 2023, R is for Red Hot & Blue. I only visited once on the Saturday night (5/27/23) of Memorial Day 2023 weekend. I was not impressed overall with this place. So, in the spring 2023, I was infrequently dating a woman who lived in northern VA. Back in March, she said she would come visit me in MD. We even had the 1st weekend of April for her to have an overnight at my place, but she had to cancel that Saturday as her knee was hurting her from some prior car accident as I recall. By May, I was starting to date someone else who I had more interest in. We only saw each other once in those 1st 26 days of May in the early part of the month; so this was on the decline, but I was willing to consider how our weekend would be. Date experience: She came over on that Saturday evening. She got to my place showed her around the tour, but she took a phone call, which took an extra 15 minutes I think. And it took her longer than she said to get here, so I was already hungry. We got in my car. I said I know a great Peruvian chicken place in Laurel that I really liked. She said she didn't want that and hoped for some nice sit-down restaurant. I pulled over before fully leaving my condo complex searched on my phone figuring out where to go as I didn't have a back up plan discussing a couple of ideas. She said no to Mexican restaurant I suggested. I said I want to try Red Hot & Blue in old town Laurel, which she agreed. So, I already was annoyed by that. As we were driving, she referenced a late March trip I took with friends to Massanutten, VA. On that March trip, I had gotten her a gift from the gift shop. I asked my friend (who was also my ex-g/f) her thoughts. She said it dependent on how much you want to spend on her. I said not much as I don't like how she had told me to get something on the Massanutten trip. My ex agreed the refrigerator magnet was fine. On the way to Red Hot & Blue, she said you better have gotten me something good & not like a keychain. Well, a refrigerator magnet is about the equivalent. From that point forward, I checked out and knew the other woman who I started dating in early May would be the only one and ultimately my girlfriend that summer. Restaurant experience: We arrived. It's an older, small restaurant. Service was ok, a bit slow. While the food was decent, it was nothing to write home about either. I've had better BBQ in MD, even in Laurel. Frankly, I like Mission BBQ also in City of Laurel & elsewhere better. Also, the portion size of the beef brisket wasn't a whole lot. The potatoes were ok. I will give my date credit for 1 thing AND ONLY 1 thing; she did share some of her chicken with me as she saw mine wasn't that much food. It was expensive considering I didn't get that much brisket, and mediocre quality. My date was talking about weird stuff I wasn't interested in. I couldn't get the check fast enough, and by the way, they were kind of slow getting me the check. Of course, I paid for hers. Conclusions: We got back to my place. I took something to alter my state as I was pissed & annoyed with her. She did spend the night. She decided to end things as she didn't like how the night & morning went. I told her that's cool with me. I was going to send her packing anyway. Oh yeah, she was critical of the Massanutten fridge magnet, yet she took it anyway when she left for her scrap box. I should've hidden it. She left her sandals behind as she had brought other shoes. I texted her a few minutes later when I realized, but she said wrote too late to turn around at this point (might've already been on freeway) and to bring them down sometime, which I did not that long later. I discretely left in a plastic bag on a chair in front of her house, while she wasn't working and texted to let her know, which she simply said Ok (not even thanks). As for the Massanutten fridge magnet, for close a year after that I annoyed when I thought about my fridge without that magnet. In February 2024, I got a girlfriend, and we ended up going to Massanutten in April 2024, and I got a nicer magnet for my fridge. I probably wouldn't come back here as I was underwhelmed and further bad memories associated with this woman.

I normally get the beef brisket either sandwich or entree, which comes with cornbread, and mac n' cheese or beans. Brisket you can get lean or moist. Moist is even more delicious, but less healthy than lean. Also, there are 6 varieties of BBQ sauces. My favorites are Texas Twang & West Virginia one. They have a Maryland style, which is a pretty good effort. There's also Carolina, Mississippi, & one other one. Good BBQ is hard to come by in MD, but Mission BBQ is always a great choice. Their blueberry clobber is incredible too, which I got a couple of times for free around Valentine's Day. Staff has always been nice at the Laurel location. Also, they support the troops & first responders. On 9/11 anniversary, they get a free sandwich that day. In 2024, my conservative dad also told me that at Noon everyday, they do the National Anthem. I asked my dad follow-up questions: Me: "Walked in at 12:05. Wonder if they still do that. Never heard them do before, but never was here exactly at 12. Do people stand up for national anthem at 12 even if they are in the middle of eating? Dad: "Yes" Me: "Does everyone stand up, or do some stay seated as they don't want their food to get cold or whatever?" Dad: "The employees stop working. Everyone except liberals stand up. They all face the flag waving on the TV until it is done. Many clap at the end of cheer." Me: "Oh wow, that's cool. So you do see some liberals stay seated?" Dad: "Just kidding on that." Me: "Oh and is it at every location? Like does Laurel, MD & all of them do it?" Dad: "All of them" Another time I arrived just before noon, which was nice as everyone stood up to put their hand on their heart while National Anthem is played. In 2024, my friend had a differing opinion from my dad on this noon National Anthem: Me: "Just missed National Anthem. My dad said Mission BBQ does at Noon everyday. I've never been right at noon." Him: "I would be pissed if I was in the middle of eating and had to stand up for national anthem." Me: "I hope I'm there one day so I can participate." Him: "Dealbreaker for an early lunch there for me." Me: "Liberals eat late. Conservatives eat first." Him: "Yeah they should have the conservatives eat at 11:30 and the libs eat at 12:30." Overall, I highly recommend Mission BBQ for the great food and friendly service.

The tab system makes it easy to move from room to room so you don't have to worry, it's easy to add drinks and food as you relax and enjoy the atmosphere. Will definitely recommend for a relaxed atmosphere where you can watch games and also enjoy lively conversation. Better than a sports bar for food AND drinks.

They usually have reservations and larger parties, but it's a pretty open/communal space, so there aren't typically issues with seating. All in all, a great spot for many occasions.

Today, I gave them another shot because Uber Eats was offering a buy one, get one free deal on the jerk chicken meal. I chose rice & peas with plantain for my sides. The chicken was cooked on the grill--which I love--because it really brings out the flavor in jerk chicken. I also requested my jerk sauce on the side since I prefer a dry rub style over a saucy one. The only drawback was the small bone pieces in the chicken and rice. That's something to be cautious about, especially if a child is eating the meal. The plantains were also inconsistent--some pieces were hard, while others were mushy. On the bright side, the coco bread was perfect and the Jamaican rum cake was phenomenal. Whoever baked that cake clearly took their time soaking it in rum. It reminded me of the way my grandmother used to make it--absolutely delicious. I would definitely order the rum cake again.

Usually with brunch we would do the bottomless mimosas and all but because I was driving I decided not to participate in that. And usually I would get chicken and waffles but I was in the mood for a burger. So I thought because their name is "Mad Cow" the burger would be the bomb...but nope it was not good at all. So I prefer a beef burger cooked medium with blue cheese, mayo, lettuce, tomato, and onions. When I burger got tot the table it was dry as a board. No blue cheese that I paid extra for and the burger was not cooked correctly it was cooked well done. Smdh. So the waiter brought me my blue cheese apologized about it and also gave me a mayo bottle. Even with the burger still was not good and the patty was so thick with no flavor not even salt and pepper was in it!! I tried their punch drink which was really good but for $15 a pop in a regular water glass was ridiculous. Make sure you don't get too tipsy as they already have like a 20% gratuity added on each of our checks no matter how small or big your group is which again is ridiculous! Will I come back...maybe only because I would like to try some Jamaican food they offer. But for brunch...it's a no for me!

The name "Soul Boat" definitely lured me in but instead I got canned greens and uncandid yams. I was beyond disappointed the moment I walked in but decided to give them a shot anyway because I was hungry. My wife and I ordered the following: Whiting Fish Platter, Shrimp Platter, along with fried Calamari. The platters come with two sides. The whiting platter I ordered I chose collard greens and candid yams. You can tell the greens came out the can. The amount of stems and blandness annoyed me from the first bit. The candid yams have nothing sweet about them. The fish was unseasoned can tasted like a filet that was just dumped in a deep fryer and pulled out. I threw most of this away outside of the fish. My wife ordered the shrimp platter with mac and cheese and greens. The shrimp are LARGE. Same problem with the greens. The Mac & Cheese just wasn't giving. I also ordered a side of Calamari. I took one bite and the trash that went as well. This didn't appear to be seasoned or cooked as well. The food here is awful. No clue how people eat here. Living off the soul name is ridiculous as mostly everything felt like it came out of a can. I'll never come back here and I'd advise you save your time and money. This spot has so many wonderful food stands. Upon walking in, you can pick up a cart to explore all of the stands. My kids love this place as much as me since you can find so much variety. Our first stop is the very busy Amish soft pretzel stand. My kids love the standard soft pretzel dipped in melted butter and topped with rock salt. My personal favorite are the stuffed soft pretzels like the pretzels stuffed with roast beef and cooper sharp cheddar. Nothing tastes better! There are also many other stands that offer fresh produce, meats, cheeses and baked goods. I particularly like Bieler's Donuts, the same place you'll find packed lines in Philadelphia right here.
