Introduction to my date: Continuing my alphabet series representing 2023, R is for Red Hot & Blue. I only visited once on the Saturday night (5/27/23) of Memorial Day 2023 weekend. I was not impressed overall with this place. So, in the spring 2023, I was infrequently dating a woman who lived in northern VA. Back in March, she said she would come visit me in MD. We even had the 1st weekend of April for her to have an overnight at my place, but she had to cancel that Saturday as her knee was hurting her from some prior car accident as I recall. By May, I was starting to date someone else who I had more interest in. We only saw each other once in those 1st 26 days of May in the early part of the month; so this was on the decline, but I was willing to consider how our weekend would be. Date experience: She came over on that Saturday evening. She got to my place showed her around the tour, but she took a phone call, which took an extra 15 minutes I think. And it took her longer than she said to get here, so I was already hungry. We got in my car. I said I know a great Peruvian chicken place in Laurel that I really liked. She said she didn't want that and hoped for some nice sit-down restaurant. I pulled over before fully leaving my condo complex searched on my phone figuring out where to go as I didn't have a back up plan discussing a couple of ideas. She said no to Mexican restaurant I suggested. I said I want to try Red Hot & Blue in old town Laurel, which she agreed. So, I already was annoyed by that. As we were driving, she referenced a late March trip I took with friends to Massanutten, VA. On that March trip, I had gotten her a gift from the gift shop. I asked my friend (who was also my ex-g/f) her thoughts. She said it dependent on how much you want to spend on her. I said not much as I don't like how she had told me to get something on the Massanutten trip. My ex agreed the refrigerator magnet was fine. On the way to Red Hot & Blue, she said you better have gotten me something good & not like a keychain. Well, a refrigerator magnet is about the equivalent. From that point forward, I checked out and knew the other woman who I started dating in early May would be the only one and ultimately my girlfriend that summer. Restaurant experience: We arrived. It's an older, small restaurant. Service was ok, a bit slow. While the food was decent, it was nothing to write home about either. I've had better BBQ in MD, even in Laurel. Frankly, I like Mission BBQ also in City of Laurel & elsewhere better. Also, the portion size of the beef brisket wasn't a whole lot. The potatoes were ok. I will give my date credit for 1 thing AND ONLY 1 thing; she did share some of her chicken with me as she saw mine wasn't that much food. It was expensive considering I didn't get that much brisket, and mediocre quality. My date was talking about weird stuff I wasn't interested in. I couldn't get the check fast enough, and by the way, they were kind of slow getting me the check. Of course, I paid for hers. Conclusions: We got back to my place. I took something to alter my state as I was pissed & annoyed with her. She did spend the night. She decided to end things as she didn't like how the night & morning went. I told her that's cool with me. I was going to send her packing anyway. Oh yeah, she was critical of the Massanutten fridge magnet, yet she took it anyway when she left for her scrap box. I should've hidden it. She left her sandals behind as she had brought other shoes. I texted her a few minutes later when I realized, but she said wrote too late to turn around at this point (might've already been on freeway) and to bring them down sometime, which I did not that long later. I discretely left in a plastic bag on a chair in front of her house, while she wasn't working and texted to let her know, which she simply said Ok (not even thanks). As for the Massanutten fridge magnet, for close a year after that I annoyed when I thought about my fridge without that magnet. In February 2024, I got a girlfriend, and we ended up going to Massanutten in April 2024, and I got a nicer magnet for my fridge. I probably wouldn't come back here as I was underwhelmed and further bad memories associated with this woman. read more

The food was absolutely trash and the service was not anything about it. I ordered via DoorDash and I found that they left one of my drinks. I found an egg shell in my potato salad and the brisket was terrible. Absolutely the last time I had ordered from Red Hot and blue. I thought I'd give them another chance after 10 or so years wrong idea or at least absolutely the wrong location in order from. I absolutely deserve a refund for this underwhelming meal and will be contacting the restaurant first thing when they open . read more

Honestly I don't know if they just had a bad day or this is the norm but this may be the worst resturant food I've ever had. Price point is great but portions are small. The sides come in sauce or condiment size cups. The green beans and macaroni and cheese are decent. The collard greens? Terrible not a pinch of salt or pepper it's as if they forgot if they seasoned it and said whatever they'll be fine. Coleslaw not good just mayo and mustard nothing else. Mac and cheese is just boxed mac and cheese. The brisket was not only dry but also tasteless. The ribs were burnt to the crisp and slathered in bbq sauce. I regularly go to Red, Hot, and Blue in Laurel. The FOOD is excellent -- especially the pulled pork, smoked meat, and delicious sauces. The PRICE is great with their reward points being an extra bonus. The SERVICE is outstanding. Our server (Gabby) not only knows our favorite meals, but also "how" we want it served. The chef makes all the food so tasty with delicious rubs and slow-cooking. The entire staff from the manager to all of the servers are friendly, accommodating, and efficient. There is a warm atmosphere with lots of pictures of blues. In short, I will continue to go there for a consistently good meal with excellent service at a great price! read more

The ambiance was that of a typical bbq restaurant, big bar in the front for grabbing drinks but too noisy and cold to dine in. Get a table in the back for talking. Service was friendly with sweet tea refills frequent. I enjoyed the half rack of ribs. Nice smoke taste and it was a good portion. The onion basket was similar to the old onion loaf, lightly breaded onions. I would order this again anytime. The sweet tea was a hit but didn't like the unsweetened tea. Fries (potato and sweet potato) were good, not over cooked and good size and portion. The smoked turkey was a little dry but they have a few different bbq sauces to select from on the table. I preferred the sweet one because the others were too hot for me. My sister found the pulled pork a little too fatty. The chicken tenders coating was a little thick. They need to work on sides as the coleslaw, beans and the Mac and cheese were watery and underwhelming. I've been going to Red Hot & Blue in Laurel, MD for many years and always enjoyed it. Unfortunately, my most recent visit was very disappointing. I ordered a slab of ribs, and they were spicy, thin, and had very little meat on them. It seems like the recipe has changed because they didn't taste anything like they used to and not in a good way. The quality just wasn't there. Sadly, this restaurant has lost my business, and I'll be looking for another place to go for ribs. read more

I've liked this restaurant in the past. Tonight we ordered an Uber Eats delivery, two Two-Timers. The meat portions were tiny, one had no bbq sauce, and it was unbelievably fatty. The two tiny sides - potato salad and baked beans - tasted ok but we're about two tablespoons each. The hush puppy orders were a normal size, I assume because they're inexpensive to make. In all honesty, I found the food here to be two stars AT BEST ... this was one of those meals I regretted spending money, or calories, on, when I left. I am a sucker for BBQ and up north, there just is not good BBQ to be found. Even the top-rated spots use electric smokers and sugary sauces. Given that Maryland is (to me) closer to the south, I hoped to grab some good old fashioned BBQ when I saw the 'food next exit' BBQ sign. The restaurant is in a cute, little MD town about 2 miles off Route 95. It's in a weird building ... I was kind of hoping to find a shack or roadhouse but it is more of a sit down restaurant. It is cozy in a 1990's style way with bright red walls and cheap blonde veneer wood finish. There are Blues concert posters and black and white photos of blues singers on the walls. I was seated in a booth in the bar area of worn red pleather ....the bar looked like it hadn't been cleaned since the Clinton administration with papers, an old box fan and other brick a brac scattered about. The bottles were a strange mix of liquor bottles you've seen at liquor stores but don't know what you'd do with. The restaurant portion seems nicer than the bar area but the entire restaurant has a bit of a shop worn vibe, including a window you pass on the way out where food supplies/boxes are stacked up like a warehouse. The food was regrettable. I did get a $10 off coupon through yelp, which took the sting out of the prices ... which seemed on the high side. I settled on a draft beer and the two meat platter. I chose pulled pork and brisket. They arrived and the brisket looked a bit dry and there was about 1/4 fat and 3/4 meat. The pulled pork looked a bit more like cole slaw and the meats were pretty greasy. I could taste no smoke ... if you told me that these meats were cooked in a crock pot, I'd believe it. I smelled no BBQ smoke outside of the restaurant, which went along with the smokeless taste. I covered the bland piles of meat in BBQ sauce, my favorite being the sweet sauce. The sauces were a bit sugary ... but at this point, I just needed something to make the meat taste like anything. It seemed the sauces were not homemade, except for the hot sauce. The mac and cheese side was good ... not the best I've had but better than some of the spots I've visited. The baked beans were awful. Basically a few spoonfuls of small reconstituted beans swimming in a cup of sweet, watery liquid. The meal was adequate but regrettable. I felt as though it was a bit of a waste of calories ... from sit down to paying the check, it was 20 minutes, so I did not waste much time eating and they didn't waste much time cooking. It was not true, authentic BBQ in my eyes ... more of a touristy version of semi-BBQ. In fairness, it did seem that many of the (mostly elderly) customers were repeats who knew the staff by name. While not my cup of tea, as a BBQ enthusiast, maybe someone living in a small town would find the social aspect more appealing. Was calling for 30 mins and got no answer so I went to the restaurant and was told kitchen was closed 10 mins before closing. I work in food service so I understand starting the process early but not answering your phone for 30 mins with no crowd is absolutely egregious. read more

So I went searching for burnt ends here in the DC. Being I am from Memphis, I am looking for real BBQ. I asked in a Foodie group on FB about where to find some GOOD burnt ends. Someone suggest Red Hot and Blue in Laurel. I placed an order for burnt ends and catfish. The place is not too far from my home so that was a plus. Overall I did like the food. I might have had this catered in the past, but never dined in for a great treat. My big sister has been raving about this place since it's such a short walk from her house. We decided to eat bbq instead of visiting our normal spots, and I was not disappointed. My sister spoke highly about the brisket chili and that was the first thing I ordered. I almost wanted to lick the bowl it was so good and I should've ordered some to go. The brisket was surely present and the spices complimented it well. I loved that they served it with sour cream and tortilla chips . . . all I needed was rice and that would have set the whole chili off for me! I order the ribs & crispers (chicken tenders). It comes with hushpuppies, cole slaw, and french fries. Very hearty and enough to take home if you seem to get full. My sister ordered the whole smoker sampler with grandma's potato salad and greens. The potato salad, hushpuppies, and greens were very tasty and accompanied the meats very well. We also ordered Hurricanes to drink and they are definitely boozy! I must say that I would return and it was low-key and off the beaten path in this part of town. My server was excellent and very attentive. I ordered when the restaurant opened and was obviously given left overs. Half the food was inedible, and the half what was edible was bad. Both orders of brisket were last Sundays over cooked roast tough. Grey, cold, dry, and so stiff they didnt bend. Both orders of greens had not a lick of seasoning. All of that went straight in the trash. The smoked chicken, pork, and turkey would have been edible but it was cold and severely skimped on the sauce. The green beans, baked beans, and rolls were worse quality than store bought. Now the ribs were sauced and warm and not even as good as a mcrib. The single star goes to whoever cooked the sausage since it was the only thing tasty and warm. Now just to clarify even if all the food was warm its still the worst bbq ive ever had. Upon my last visit, I was hesitant to order anything 'meat platter' for fear of 1. Grease & 2. Meh sauces. So I stuck to chicken wings & a cobb salad, & was pleasantly happy. This visit, though I said I'd shy away from the 'meat platter', with pregnancy cravings I found myself ordering the Tennessee Triple w.brisket, dry ribs, pulled pork, a side of chili, collard greens, & hush puppies...and don't forget the Hootchie Cootchie sauce. Overall, pros & cons. Pros: It was an excellent amount of meat & sides for the price. Large slices of brisket, four rib rack, and a hearty helping of pulled pork. I loved loved loved the hootchie cootchie sauce-it had a delightful kick without a sweet bbq taste. The chili wasn't what I expected at all-in a good way! Brisket chunks, chunks of peppers-jalapenos-tomatoes-and onions with shredded cheese throughout, it was a very delicious unique take on traditional chili. Cons: The meat was very fatty. I had to practically cut every slice of brisket in half, dab with napkins, and smother in sauce to subdue the fat & grease taste. The ribs were all fat. The pulled pork was meaty & delicious, but paired on the same plate with the others really soaked up the grease. This Red, Hot and Blue restaurant in Laurel, Maryland was our preferred restaurant for Southern style BBQ Baby Ribs for many years before pandemic. Always excellent baby ribs (Memphis style), onion rings and beer (unfortunately very limited selection) plus holiday vibe and old pictures and posters of the blues musicians and singers on the walls made everything great. But yesterday visit (my wife and I) was devastating. Food: 1. Onion rings (we ordered one basket to share) - they were not bright and crispy at all as previously. Instead they looked and tasted as overboiled to almost a porridge, sprinkled by bread crumbs and fried a bit. Awful to me, nothing like as used to be to my wife. 2. BBQ Baby Ribs (we ordered 1 slab to share in two plates): - these two halves of a slab were absolutely different: my wife have got thick ribs, I got the thin ribs. The thick ribs were cooked perfectly, meat was tender, juicy and tasty. The only drawback was the cook didn't remove a membrane from the internal side of the slab - it can't be cut and my wife had to remove it from the slab covered by BBQ source - this wasn't pleasant exercise in a restaurant. The thin ribs were overcooked: meet wasn't juicy at all, but very dry, tasteless and the surface of the slab was very hard and even difficult to chew. No pleasure at all. Coleslaw was so-so: lack of seasoning and a bit dry. Ambience: We left the restaurant around 8 pm, Saturday (they close at 10 pm on Saturday). Previously at this time and day it was a peak time: often we needed to wait to be seated (they never offered reservations). Now the restaurant was almost empty (it was not full when we came in), it looked as a dying place. Service: Good. Conclusion: We will find another place for BBQ Ribs. My rating of this restaurant is 2 of 5, my wife's is 3 of 5. read more

I went right before closing and i felt so guilty!!! but the service and food was great. the vibes of the restaurant was so cute! my son (2) loved it and the people working there were so kind to him. Our waiter was Chris W. and i'll definitely ask for him next time! we didn't catch our bartenders name but she made me a Bahama Mama i won't forget. 10 woooooos out of 10. my best friend got a laurel whiskey sour and it was so good when i tried jt. highly recommend, i'll be back with more friends and family for sure. :) P.S. I'm sure this is a great BBQ restaurant for people who have never had real BBQ. The average age of the (presumed) regulars is about 75. They look like the kind of people who think that wearing lipstick and showing a bit of ankle is risqué . I'm sure this place matches their taste well , because this is the blandest crummiest BBQ I've ever had. If I was a few years younger and a little broker I would have walked out as soon as my food was served to me. It tastes like my brisket was microwaved. I asked for white bread, pickles and onions with my plate and received 2 rolls. What am I supposed to do with these? What the other reviewer said about "not being hit with the bbq smell" is 100% accurate. The atmosphere is almost as bland as the food. I feel like I'm sitting in a booze-free Bennigans. (Not to be misleading: There is a bar here.) This place is so "blah" I need to think most of the positive reviews were written by the owners friends. He looks like a nice guy. I almost didn't write this review because I didn't want to pile-on an old man. But holy moly people need to know to stay away. This place would be better positioned in a small Pennsylvania town filled with out of work , retired iron workers who don't have passports and have never been on a plane. I don't eat at a lot of new restaurants. I find places I like and cherish them forever. This experience is a great example of why I don't bother: the disappointment is just so incredibly overwhelming that you regret even trying. read more

Shoutout to Wes!!! He really rocked!!! Super nice, attentive, and informative. We were saving up our appetite for our feast! So the yummy appetizer of savory catfish and crunchy hush puppies did not even get a pic!!!! So delicious! I'm super picky about catfish and this was on point! Thin dusting of batter which makes the fish the star! Creamy tartar sauce! We mixed a bit of dry rub dust and ketchup with the tartar sauce to make a spicy Mayo type sauce. Refreshing ice tea! Wes never let us hanging dry. He even brought us a fresh cup when we were eating. The ribs are great and the dry rub is our favorite! I added smoked sausage to my ribs. Their sauces are delicious and my hubby's favorite is the mustard base sauce. The sides are so yummy as well, we had baked beans, green beans, potato salad, coleslaw, and greens. We loved every bite! We had some to take home to make a yummy snack for later. We shared dessert and were sooooo excited that the fruit cobbler was scrumptious blackberries!!! Our favorite berry!!! It's been 20+ years since I walked in these doors. "Iconic" does not quite capture the feeling we experienced here. Everything was just fantastic-o! Even the Men's Room was spotless. We ate well and just could not finish - so we boxed up and left very happy indeed! I fell in love with Red Hot & Blue back in '88 when they first opened. Worst meal that I have had in years. Firstly, the service was excellent. Not the waitress' fault that the meal was so piss-poor. No exaggeration when I say that 3/4 of the brisket serving was fat and gristle. The collard greens could not have been more tasteless. It was like the collards had been boiled water for six hours. I've been slowly going here less and less. With so many more options in the area the food just isn't where it needs to be. The only thing their gumbo gets right is the rice. We got pulled pork, pulled chicken, and sausage. They all tasted as if they were cooked in a slow cooker with water. The hush puppies were ok but because of their odd long shape there was no real soft inside. I have nothing bad to say about the service though. Our waitress was prompt and helped us out a lot. I have been here twice in the last 30 days, both times we both enjoyed everything from the wet and dry ribs, catfish, pulled pork, Cole slaw, chili, collard greens all we're on point, potato salad was not my favorite, love the hush puppies, so bad for you but so good, we call ahead most times get there early have a cocktail which are nice and fairly priced, everyone has been nothing but friendly and helpful. I've been going to this location for close to 15 years with my partner. His family has been going for even longer. We ordered takeout and I was a little nervous with all of the recent reviews. However, upon opening everything and eating - it wasn't nearly as bad as everyone made it seemed. I can tell that things have gone down hill a little bit because the food was slightly different than in years past and the restaurant was completely dead. Been here a few times in my life, and the food has always been very good, as well as the service. The restaurant is tucked away in this business complex at the end of Main Street, Laurel, MD. There is plenty of parking in the back, and a cute stoned stairway takes you around the side of the building, and to the front of the restaurant. The interior is a decent size, with plenty of tables to choose from, as well as a bar, and tons of blues music memorabilia on the walls to entertain the eyes (the restaurant's theme). I ordered a half rack of ribs and a pulled pork sandwich with potato salad and coleslaw. The ribs were fantastic, and the meat fell off of the bone. The pulled pork was cooked nicely, but was a little on the bland side. The potato salad and coleslaw were also very good, but also a little bland. I think they under season a lot of their food so that not every bite you take is saturated with richness because that could be overwhelming. My wife ordered the RH and B chopped salad. It was tasty enough thanks to the ranch dressing, but the salad itself was nothing to be amazed by. I know it's just a salad, but when you present a salad as a meal and not a side, it has to be above all other dishes because it is essentially just lettuce, vegetables, and a protein. If anything, you must plate the salad better than just throwing it on a plate, and stacking meat on top. Offer a special dressing that accentuates the protein/veggie combination, and maybe a toasted baguette to add another food texture to the meal. And if you are placing raw carrots in the salad, please make sure they are cut to bite sized pieces, not just whole baby carrots thrown into the salad. But this is just me nitpicking. For desert, we had the peach cobbler. I definitely recommend this dessert to anyone eating at this restaurant. It was simply delicious, especially when served with vanilla ice cream. All in all, I really enjoy this restaurant. The staff is very friendly, and the atmosphere is welcoming. I definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants some good ol' bbq. read more

I really wasn't impressed with the food here. I arrived in the area an hour before my nail appointment, so decided to get some lunch. Pull chicken sandwich 1/10 - Very bland, literally no flavor at all except for the BBQ sauce. The bun wasn't good either and broke a part very easily. Mac & cheese 8/10 - Delicious and flavorful. It was the best thing I ate there. Potato salad 5/10 - Just okay, more flavor was needed. Cole slaw 5/10 - Just okay, more flavor was needed. Banana pudding 0/10 - Absolutely disgusting. Literally the worst banana pudding I've ever had. For starters, the pudding was grainy and the bananas were old. Lastly, there was only two cookies placed on the top!!!! I've never in my life had a banana pudding with only two cookies! The cookies should've been layered with the pudding anyway. Who eats banana pudding with hard cookies?
