My soon-to-be father-in-law took me to this place last Tuesday for lunch, it was fantastic! I got the pulled pork sandwich with fries and was very impressed with the quality of the meat! I was pleasantly surprised by Mission BBQ. I am not a fan or BBQ unless it is the NC dry rub BBQ ($9) but I did enjoys the pulled chicken sandwich and Mac and cheese. I was. It was my first time and I ordered Brisket Sandwich (you are asked less fat option), two different Ribs (they sell by the bone $2.19, also come with corn bread), Fries and Mac & Cheese as recommended by yelpers. Here is how it went after you order at front desk, your name will be called to pick up or brought to you if not all items are ready. Brisket, flavorful but dry but manageable with one of the 6 bbq sauces they have and coleslaw. big serving. Coleslaw, it states creamy but almost dry. Nah. Mac n Cheese, I would eat it again. Baby back ribs, very juicy and flavorful, big Spare rib (got served two), dry but flavorful and big Fries, very good. Corn bread, not dry, sweet and not to sweet. Loved it. Cornbread is ridiculously good remind me a lot of Famous Dave's cornbread the pulled pork was really good I like the sauce that I got with it Smoky Mountain was what it was called but the meat by itself was really good as well I highly recommend this place and I look forward to doing it again. You order at the counter, give your name, and then pick up your order when your name is called. The meat portions are more than generous - heaping piles of meat smoked to perfection. Fantastic service, great food, and a great atmosphere! We took my father-in-law here for his birthday, at his request...he had bragged about the food, which meant something because he is a very picky eater. I've had a lot of good BBQ in my days, especially with 7 years of frequently traveling to Texas for business. I honestly think this may be the best BBQ I've had since I was last in Texas over 6 years ago. First off, everything is a la cart, but they do have specials where you can get 2 or 3 meats at a discount. I got their beef brisket and pulled pork with a baked sweet potato that was loaded with cinnamon butter. All their meats are cooked with a dry rub, which gives it great flavor, plus it was tender and juicy! They have 6-7 different sauces at each table that you can try, I tried 2 of them...one sweet and one spicy, but unfortunately I forgot the name of them. The baked sweet potato was cooked just right, to where it was almost like mashed sweet potatoes...it was fantastic and nice compliment to the BBQ. Their service was fantastic, they came around to the tables and checked on everyone as well as offered samples and to take your plate when you were finished. We pulled into the parking lot and noticed a parking spot reserved for veterans (my husband recently retired after 20 years), heck yea we parked there lol. Upon entering, you can't help but notice all the pictures of military service members and military decor posted all over the walls- and they didn't forget the Coast Guard like most places. We ordered our food at the counter, got our drinks and sat down. They called our name to pick up our food in about 2 minutes- mad quick! The Jalapeño cheese sausage was soo good. This was a pleasant surprise. I'm pretty picky about my BBQ and had not yet found a place in Louisville that I liked (lived here two years). Further, I'm typically really skeptical of chain BBQ places (looking at you, Dickey's). Pretty typical fast casual setup with the exception of the cute cold bottled drink trough before the ordering counter. Husband had a pulled pork sandwich with potato salad and cole slaw; I had pulled chicken with baked beans and mac & cheese. The meats were really outstanding. Not too dry, but more importantly (for me) not too wet. The sauces were fun to try and we each had our favorite. The cole slaw was good but pretty basic. The potato salad flavor was great but the pieces of potato were unevenly sized. I found the beans a little too sweet. Mac & cheese was fine. Their theme is military and first responder appreciation, basically. And they lay it on really thick. The guy in front of us had on a VFW hat, and the cashier came out from behind the register to shake his hand. There's patriotism/America/police/military stuff everywhere. I'm not assigning a value to any of this; it just is what it is and I was kind of surprised at just how heavy handed the theme is. Okay, I realize I just said a bunch of neutral-at-best things about the sides and the atmosphere. But the meat! So good! Five stars for the meat alone. The meat has no smoke ring, and is not edible in my opinion. It is fatty and strange for the land of bbq. It doesn't taste or look like a smoked brisket. Additionally, there is no wood stack outside. The sauce is on the table in small plastic bottles with odd names - why?. The meat needs a blanket not a sauce. I went there 3 times before leaving this review, every time the meat that they call brisket was so bad I had to leave it on the table. I hope they can do something to improve the food quality. Got the half-pound of BBQ turkey with a drink and two sides for $11.50. The turkey was very tender and flavorful; as good as I've had anywhere. As sides I had the baked beans and green beans. The baked were good, but the green were a little overcooked and greasy; next time I'll likely try the coleslaw instead. Knowing that I was traveling through Kentucky and Tennessee, I planned to eat at a Mission Barbecue. I was too late when I went through Nashville but on my way home, I was able to eat at the St. Matthews restaurant. It did not disappoint. My husband and I got the three meat combination plate. The pulled pork was outstanding as usual. I also loved the brisket and beans. Even I liked the coleslaw and I am a bit picky. My only complaint is that this restaurant only had Pepsi products. I read so many good things about Mission BBQ that I could not wait to try it out. It was built up quite a bit so here I am to knock it down a peg. I got the pulled pork sandwich - very generic - and mac and cheese (upon staff recommendation) and a sweet tea. I was pretty disappointed after all of the great things I had read. To start, I can see the appeal of the mac and cheese to some people, but I did not like it. I think there might be a cream cheese base in there which threw off the flavor for me. It was hot and creamy and topped with melted cheese, but those were not enough to allow me to enjoy that option. My dad ordered the baked beans and thought they were fantastic. I can't comment on them any more than that. The sandwich was disappointing as well. The portion of pork was massive which is always a good thing. However, the bun it was served on was very thick, dense, and chewy. I tossed the buns and ate the pork with a fork. The pork itself was fine. Nothing special. My biggest gripe is they have 7 barbecue sauces to choose from and non of them were superb. That was pretty disappointing. Their hot barbecue sauce was a medium spice level at best. Most of their sauces are very sweet and lack a distinct flavor. The sweet tea was good, however, that is not surprising as flavored sugar water is rarely bad. I would have given them 2 stars, if not for the service. Outstanding service from the staff behind the counter, to the cooks, to the servers/bussers. Upon entry we were greeted with a loud, warm welcome. We were given recommendations by several of the staff members available to take an order. In addition, I was reading the sauce listing and another staff member discussed his pros and cons of each with me (i disagreed with most of his analysis). In summary, not the best BBQ place in Louisville, but they have a super friendly and attentive staff that will make you feel welcomed and at home. Ate here on Friday night, for probably the 10th time in the last year and realized I hadn't given them a review yet....oops! Anytime we are craving good bbq we make the trek to the Saint Matthews or Clarksville Mission location as we love them both equally, just depends on where else we need to go. Last night I got their pastrami for the first time, and it is my new favorite item on the menu! They even have me a bun so I could make me a pastrami sandwich, I put a little AL white sauce on it and OMG it was HEAVENLY! While I didn't get a picture of it because I was too busy enjoying its tastiness; it was big hunks of freshly sliced pastrami. My husband got their chicken sandwich, green beans, and fries (which is one of my usuals there but decided to switch it up last night and so glad I did). The employees are always super friendly and helpful, they will even let you try a sample of a new meat before you buy it if you wish. The sweet tea and lemonade are both so good, I personally love to make me an Arnold Palmer and enjoy both at the same time :) Next time you see a mission bbq be sure to stop in: Get some pulled pork, pulled chicken, pastrami, a steak, fries, macaroni, cheesy potatoes, green beans, baked beans....we have had it all and they are all equally as delicious! Just beware that their menu does change with black plate specials and seasonal sides... So much more than just great barbecue! They are very friendly and efficient and food is ready fast after ordering.. I often don't have time to fill my drink at the coke machine before they've called my name. They have many different hot sauces to choose from- "Nashville Hot" is my favorite followed by "Texas Twang" which is a blend of A1 and Worcestershire sauce (awesome on the brisket) They also have many "off menu" (or is it "stealth menu"???) items that they can whip up for you special. They make all their own sauces. They sing the National Anthem and 12 noon every day! They have a big-ass military truck they use for catering and a huge American flag pole out front! While everything I've had there is great, I love either the pulled pork sandwich "NC style" (that's with slaw on top) smothered in Nashville Hot sauce or the smoked turkey sandwich which is unbelievable! So big and sooooooo juicy and all white meat! All the sides are great too especially the fries which they "drop" as soon as you order so they are always fresh and hot for you! The green beans with chunks of bacon and tasty broth are the best I've ever had anywhere! I see many of the same people working there ever since they opened a few years ago which says a lot about their business.
