Great first impression. First, Morgan took great care of us and offered several menu suggestions - and got us in for $3 off a starter minutes before the special ended. We hadn't had a mozzarella wheel in ages. This was a good one, especially the marinara sauce. The beer battered cod with two sides is a great choice or the 2- or 4-pc fried chicken. If you're a fan of chicken fried chicken with gravy, this was a large portion. We tried the fried green tomatoes, broccoli slaw, mashed potatoes, and green beans as sides. The tomatoes came with a sauce and it had a kick of heat. We weren't big fans of the green beans, mainly because they took the flavor of the broth they'd been cooked in. The menu is huge. Very good meal here last Wednesday for lunch with three friends. Darian was our server and he was very efficient and personable. I ordered a club sandwich for lunch with no tomato and no mayo, with fried green tomato as my side. The turkey and ham on that sandwich was so fresh and moist that I didn't even need a condiment! I thought I was gonna get one fried green tomato as my side and there were two and they did not disappoint as usual the other meals at the table looked amazing. One Friend had a salmon with green beans and broccoli, and he scarfed it up. My other two friends shared a pick two kind of lunch with a loaded potato soup and a balsamic vinaigrette, chicken salad, and they kept passing the plates between them. We love coming for the incredible Monday night meal deal. Louisville is definitely short on diner type places to go for meals and I think the quality of the food is very good and service is always great. Monday special night gets busy and will sell out, so go early! $5 margaritas and the special is a deal you can always enjoy without breaking the bank! Stopped in for lunch on a Friday before noon and the place was filling up quickly. We had a server named Grace, who did a fantastic job. Our iced tea was refilled several times without having to ask. I had the cod sandwich on rye. It was huge, had a delicious dill tartar sauce, lettuce and a yummy summer tomato...two fat slices. Green beans were good, just a hint of ham, thankfully not overdone or swimming in fatty bacon broth. My husband enjoyed a generous bowl of potato soup and fried green tomato BLT. He loved it. It's not gourmet, it's solid American fare with an excellent, varied menu. There were many older people this day, clearly they found a niche in providing familiar comfort food at a reasonable price. I really wanted to like this place especially as it was recommended to me by a bartender who I could tell had very good taste in restaurants but my experience there for dinner recently was not satisfactory enough. Immediately when I walked in, I was greeted by a host who had a total lack of warmth or friendliness. My server didn't exactly exude warmth either but he was much better and did a good job attending to my needs. I got one of the dinner specials, the pork chops with two sides. I chose mac and cheese as well as fried green tomatoes. The latter and the dipping sauce they came with were delicious. But, the mac and cheese was lukewarm and the pork chops were dry. What I ordered was nicely displayed though. I also was pleased to see that seasonal favorites were offered on the menu. When I asked about non-alcoholic beverages, my server didn't appear to have any preexisting mocktails but was willing to make something for me or suggested lemonades and we settled on a sparkling strawberry lemonade and that was delicious. I was disappointed, though, when I left although a number of workers were gathered by the door no one told me to have a good night or thanked me for having dinner there. I probably won't be returning though I recognize my server was quite good. Came on a Friday evening and it was busy but there were plenty of open tables. Service seemed kind of slow but the staff seemed busy. Running around trying to clean tables, bring out plates, check on customers. I ordered a sweet tea right away. It came with a free refill. The first one was watered down but the second glass tasted a lot better. Smooth and refreshing. Not too sweet either. I'd order again! We ordered some apps to try: fried green tomatoes and BBQ chicken wings. Delicious! And bigger portions than we thought! We finished the tomatoes but had to take home the wings. For my entree, I got chicken fried chicken. Food comes with 2 sides. I tried the Caesar salad and Mac and cheese. The Caesar was good. Pretty big for it being a side salad! The Mac and cheese was okay. Kinda lacking in flavor. I like it cheesy with a bit of a crust on top from being in the oven. This just wasn't that. The chicken was good but large! Not bad. Usually it's pounded thin. Still good though! My family got: chicken tenders with fries and green beans, 2 piece dark with mashed potatoes and green beans, and grilled chicken with fries and mixed vegetables. Portion sizes weren't bad. Again, it's a lot of food! You really don't need to get apps unless you're super hungry. They have a lot of TVs in every angle so you can catch ESPN. We didn't stay too long to catch any games. From a service and value standpoint, 5 stars. But the food is just ok. This place is very popular and today brought my aging parents to lunch a little early and was forced to stand outside from 10:45-11:00 (open time) along with about 20 others. We all thought that anyone else would open the doors to allow customers to come in and sit, then wait until opening to serve, but The Goose Eatery thought otherwise. Lots of comfort food at this joint that is mostly so so. I am a huge fan of the fried green tomatoes, corn bread, and friend fish choices. If I could rate this place 10 stars I would! Our experience from the time we walked in until we left was top notch all around. The lady who sat us was super nice, and Desmond our waitress was phenomenal! She kept our drinks full and even brought to go drinks. She was also respectful of my son's tree nut allergy. Pecans are a huge trigger on him and she made sure no items that had touched the pecans touched his food. This momma is very appreciative of that. The food was hands down the best home town cooking I've had in a long time and the prices here are so good. The classic hot brown was also delicious. The portions are HUGE. Definitely didn't need an appetizer beforehand, but the appetizer was worth it! The vegetarian hot brown, on the other hand, was not great. The fried mushroom that makes up the base of the hot brown got super soggy in the sauce, and it was a very random assortment of vegetables on top without much flavor. Ok, the Goose has not improved in the few years it has been open. The food is so-so, way over salted but my main complaint is the service. While we were greeted upon walking in the door, the FOUR servers standing at the counter just stood there acting like they didn't know why we were there, so finally we just said, there are three plus a highchair please. It took a full five minutes for someone to rustle up some menus and decide where to seat us, while I was standing there holding a 12 month old waiting. The actual server was fine, took our order and the food came out in about the time expected. We did hear the manager having to comp something at another table, and had to ask twice for boxes at the end of the meal. Not terrible, just not great. Tonight my husband and I stopped in for dinner. I ordered the large chef salad with ranch and added shrimp -- it was delicious and really hit the spot. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly portioned. My husband went with the jalapeño burger (not pictured), and he really enjoyed it too. Our waitress was young and seemed pretty new, so she wasn't totally familiar with the menu yet, but she was sweet, attentive, and clearly doing her best -- which goes a long way in my book. Finally made it back for a visit after the move to the new location and shift in atmosphere. Still a quality spot. Lots of diner style, home style food options (I'm a sucker for a classic country fried steak, and they have a good one), plus some fun options (I am also a sucker for a hot brown, and they have some quality variants). The addition of the full bar is nice (old spot had beer and wine only as I recall), but it's a little inconsistent in cocktail quality and speed of bar service--by no means a deal-breaker, to be clear, and just get a nice bourbon or a beer if needed! We were seated on a Saturday after only a 10 or 15 minute wait. We ordered a couple drinks at the bar and settled up as we waited for a table to be ready. That was all good. To make it quick. We asked for water three times, my drink three times. Received food with no silverware, had to request that. My wife ordered the salmon croquettes and fried green tomatoes, she liked it, but note the dill sauce it's not on the side. I ordered fried chicken all white, that didn't happen, but the corrected it quickly. I used my side of grits as a dipping sauce for the dry chicken. Fried green tomatoes were good. We went to The Goose for birthday desserts after having dinner elsewhere for my husbands birthday celebration. The 4 of us shared a piece of coconut cream pie, a piece of decadant chocolate cake and a piece of carrot cake. All three desserts were excellent, the coconut cream pie was my favorite but others preferred the cake. So all were winners. Nice setting with a nice menu. Located in a strip mall so plenty of parking. They also have a full bar. Our server was friendly and efficient and made us fresh decafinated coffee wirh was a good tasty, not too strong cup of joe. Great find for a Sunday brunch after hitting up Robinson Park. They offered a brunch menu or a dinner menu and we all went with the brunch except my husband got a club sandwich. They offer a kids menu, including kids crayons to keep them entertained. My kids loved the pancakes and bacon. The pancakes were delicious and they kept asking for more. I tried the sausage lovers biscuits and it was a lot of food but really good. My husband tried the sandwich and really enjoyed that and the fries kept ending up on my plate. We went to The Goose last night for the first time. The restaurant was pretty, modern, and very clean. We were greeted by a very friendly, very tall man, and we were seated immediately. Our waiter was Stan, and he took great care of us all evening. We started off with the fried green tomatoes. They came out quickly and VERY HOT! They are the best I've ever tasted. They were coated in the crispiest, most flavorful coating imaginable! The tomatoes were super tangy & delicious. They were served with a tangy & spicy dip. It was excellent! That dip would go well on anything! I've had a LOT of shrimp & grits in my life. Coming from Maryland, I know good seafood, too. This huge portion of shrimp & grits was hands down, the best I've ever had! Every single ingredient was perfectly prepared!! Even the least of them was thoughtfully done. The finely diced onions, celery, and peppers were all cut uniform, ensuring they all cooked evenly. The spices were bold and super flavorful. There was just enough spice to enhance all the natural flavors. The gravy was SO good! The sausage and shrimp were incredible. The grits were creamy and delicious!! There isn't anything remotely negative that I can say about this dish! (It was also served with 2 perfectly baked, scratch made, bread sticks.) My friend got the traditional hot brown. It made an impactful impression when they sat it on the table! It was HUGE and beautiful!! The robust flavors in the cheese sauce were mind-blowing! I tasted it, and my eyes just closed while it melted in my mouth. (I'd eat that sauce off the ground. It was that good!!) There was a ton of turkey on it, and I'm talking real turkey. It didn't appear to be deli turkey at all. The acid from the tomatoes went great with the rich cheese sauce. The bacon was abundent and perfectly cooked! My friend ordered the lemon, berry, blueberry cake dessert. I was full, but she insisted I take a bite. Im so glad I did! HOLY COW!!!!! Do not leave without getting this dessert! If you're full, take it to go, like we did. We've all seen the lemon blueberry combination, but I dare you to find one better than this! Tons of lemon flavor and lots of blueberries along with that moist cake were insanely delicious!! Neither of us finished our meals so we got to take home leftovers!! YAY!!! Great food, well appointed especially the bar area, but as others have noted the staff needs more training. Nothing wrong with having a young staff, but the place is small, and I overheard them disparaging one of their customers, and discussing the different types of marijuana. Lots of servers were standing around, and I felt bad for the poor bartender as she was in the weeds all night (she was running it solo, and the manager never helped out). A little more attention to these issues from mgmt and could be a great local spot. read more
