I have been avoiding this place, and ignoring the steady stream of good reviews that populate the site, in what could be considered a case of mistaken identity. I should start paying better attention. Set up as what is essentially a take-out stand, with indoor seating (à la Shake Shack) done slightly more rustic with shared picnic style tables. Its a fun spirited place. The burgers are no slouch either. House ground, hand formed burger patties, with those moist crumbles of beefy goodness and cheese were pretty delicious. They do a take on "Special Sauce" with their Mickey D Burger (aioli with ketchup, cornichons, capers, fine herbs, and brandy) which was pretty darn good too. The hand cut fries were solid, but not special, cut a bit closer to a steak fry than a shoestring. I do believe they are using peanut oil, or something similar, because they had a nice bit of crispness. Good choice for a burger joint. read more

It has never occurred to me, before learning about Mission's existence, that Newport doesn't really have a "burger joint". Yes, there is a burger place on Lower Thames... but considering I don't even remember the name.. it's never created that much attention. Thankfully, it doesn't need to. Mission fulfills ALL requirements on ALL standards. The atmosphere is very fun and rustic, with a long wooden bar/table in the middle, and small tables on the sides. It is a very small space, and probably can only seat 15-20 people. The decor is whimsical and cute, with Christmas lights, and artsy writing for menus and pictures. It felt cozy and relaxing. The menu is pretty straight forward. Burgers, Fries, Beer and Wine. If you want fancy burgers, go to the Black Pearl... Mission is serious about serving you a burger, the best that you have ever had, but it won't have all the frillyness that the upscale places have. I had a plain burger, and it was by the the top 3 best burger's I have ever had, considering that I don't even remember what my other top 2 are, it may be number 1. The burger is thick, juicy, and very very fresh. The meat tastes hand sliced and packed. The fries are definitely the best fries I have ever had. This is the first place that popped up on Yelp when I searched Newport, RI without any key words and it shows up for good cause. The burgers here are insane. Best I've ever had and that's not exaggerating. The first time I came, I got a bacon cheeseburger using aged cheddar and french fries. There's so much flavor in that burger and it's coming at you from everywhere. The bun rocks. The cheese is off the charts. And the burger is to die for. The serving size was just right that I left feeling contently full on a burger, fries, and a fermented beverage but not so full that I wanted to fall asleep. I tried the hot dog (also ground in house) on a second trip and it was good but it didn't come close to the burger. They sell beer and wine too which is a great perk and there is a good variety to choose from. Not only is the food good but the place has character. I got hooked up with Dr Dre, a plastic triceratops, when I placed my order and we chilled out with a beer together until the food was ready. This place is one of the new 100% organic, home made, burger/hot dog joints in the middle of downtown Newport. The place itself is kind of small and there are only 4-5 tables, but you typically sit with another group. It has a nice hipster concept of giving you a plastic dinosaur with your number so they know who to give the order to once everything is ready. The place was clean and we constantly saw one of the workers picking up the trays and wiping down the tables. The wife and I came in on a Sunday for lunch. We ordered two burgers, a hotdog, and an order of fries to split for the two of us. The damage for this was $30. The burgers are supposed to be cooked medium, mine was even medium rare (slight red in the middle vice pink), but I like it that way so I had no issue with it. The burgers are thick but small. So imagine a McDonald's hamburger patty but about 3 times thicker. The burger is juicy, topped with fresh greens and smoked bacon. It honestly isn't a bad burger, but for the price I thought it should be a little bigger. The hot dog tasted good but I have had many organic fresh made sausages before and I had one question ringing through my head the entire time. For a homemade sausage you usually use the intestine liner, to avoid the plastic synthetic casings. These usually have a nice crunch to them which is what people associate with a classic sausage. Unfortunately, these were soft on the outside and I am curious if they put all this work into making an organic product only to use a synthetic liner. It's like paying for all the options on a Hyundai and still having only a Hyundai... Regardless, the hot dog was decent, just curious about the liner. I'm not one of the hipster crowd that would get offended by having a synthetic liner. The fries were pretty good, home made and cut there. They are nice and crispy on the outside and firm in the middle. Reminds me of a Five Guy's fry. That is where I come to a huge disconnect with this place. For the price, I could have went to Five Guy's with the wife twice. This place is not twice as good as Five Guy's. Hell, for the price, I'll make my own burgers and know exactly what I put in them. I've had $30 burger meals that have blown me away making me drool in anticipation of going back. This place, scratches the itch for my hunger, it really didn't have me dying to come back again. I understand its in the middle of downtown Newport and its a thriving business trying to turn a profit. We visited Mission this weekend during the Newport Winter Festival. We had high hopes because Winner Winner, a sister restaurant, is one of our favorite eats in the city! It was just good. Not amazing, just decent hamburgers and good fries. You can tell the quality of the meat is high, but the taste was lacking. We got the bacon cheeseburger and the Newport Patty melt. They were a beautiful site to behold! Very attractive layering between the buns, but went "wha wha" on the tastebuds. The fries were good, no complaints here. What is there not to love about Mission? If you haven't heard of or taken to the time to go down to Newport to grab a burger, hotdog and some fries...you are seriously missing out. I love how their burgers and hotdogs are made fresh in house daily and they use all locally sourced ingredients. I've enjoyed a couple different burgers on the menu, along with the Chicago dog and you seriously can't go wrong with either option. Also, this place makes some awesome french fries. Crispy and delicious...and be sure to ask for some of their Mission sauce on the side for dipping. The prices are pretty decent especially for the quality of food you get and while the portions aren't huge, they certainly are pretty filling. It's not a big space inside but its a simple layout and gets filled up quickly when they are busy. I've been meaning to make it into Mission for what seems over & finally got a chance to over Folk Fest weekend. I wasn't disappointed. Best burger in Newport? My burger & fries were damn good! They locally source the meat from farms in New England so my patty was from Maine that night. The burger itself didn't look too generous but was definitely a good size. I wanted it medium & it came out kinda pink & juicy. No complaints! The bacon they use is serious business. Thick cut like you get at the farmers market. I added the Mission sauce to kick thing up a notch. Tasty bun with lettuce & tomato. I'd definitely come back! The serving size for the fries wasn't overwhelming. They were between steak fries & thin cut. Cooked perfectly so they were crispy on the outside & melt on your mouth inside. Points off for having no AC & milkshakes! They more than make up for it with their craft beer can selections but sometimes you need a vanilla milkshake to wash down your burger & fries. Even though they don't really have any special/creative burgers on the menu the quality is there. Not sure if it was my timing (9pm) on a Saturday but the place was jammed making for a long wait. The hot dogs were being served on New England style buns and looked fantastic. Woohoo! As good as it gets! I highly recommend anyone visiting Newport check out MISSION. They have a cool concept, fresh food, and a great selection of beer. MISSION has a unique and fun order identification system; instead of table numbers or tickets, the customer is given a retro toy. We had an old-school Captain America! How sweet is that!?! The place is kin of small, but we didn't have to wait for our seats. We actually lucked out --it was starting to get very crowded just as we were finishing up our meals. This is the perfect burger in a fluffy lightly roasted potato roll. The party is 3/4 of an inch with a very crisp exterior and juicy pink center. The party is perfectly seasoned, less salty than shake shack (for comparison). The sweet pickles I added contributed a perfect crunch. The mission sauce that is flavored with capers was incredible. I regret not getting an extra side of it. That store is gone and Mission now operates only in Middletown in a space that has no cozy vibe and the quality of the burgers has gone down hill.
