While visiting Kansas City, I was on the lookout for an independent pet shop to get souvenirs for my dog. I found Mission Pet Mart on the Internet and took a drive out there. The workers are really helpful and they have a wide variety of aquarium supplies, exotic pets, and other cat and dog supplies. The dogs are kept in kinda small cages, which is a little concerning. I love this place!!! The staff is always super helpful, friendly, and HONEST!!! I went in recently and they told me that what I was looking for wasn't necessary for my fish, and might even be detrimental for the water quality! Taken my dogs here for last couple years for grooming. Unfortunately I was cancelled on last minute due to groomer being ill. Was rescheduled for weeks later. Took my dog in and after 5 hours was called and told groomer could no longer lift my Great Pyrenees to bathe. It's unfortunate they have only one groomer. Additional help for larger breed dogs is needed and being transparent with your clients would be helpful. If you have a big dog looking to groom this is not the place. read more

SOOOOO GOOD!!! Everything you could possibly want in a local store for aquariums. Betta fish are the best kept I've ever seen in a pet store hands down. They have bubblers in quart size containers! Very nice to see! Best of all, the PRICES ON THE BETTAS AREN'T INSANE?! I was shocked. In addition to this, they have so many aquatic plants and supplies, and fish! So fun. I am concerned about the welfare of these animals. The cages are too small. I suspect the puppies come from a mill. The birds, rats, and pocket pets are over crowded and in the same area, allowing for spread of disease. The parrot does not look healthy or happy. read more

Mission pet mart has the best selection of fish salt water and freshwater and corals, they don't pop up when you search for fish stores. They also have a few people that are really knowledgeable about the fish and corals which has helped me get into the hobby. read more

This is the exact Opposite of what you want a local store too be please do not spend money here Don't go here, 2 workers are friendly and the rest are not at all. Nothing I buy here lives more than a week because their water quality is terrible but will say yours if if anything dies, their fish and live plants have made 3 of my 7 tanks crash. They sell puppies out of 2x2 plastic cages and when I took one of my dogs there a few years ago for overnight stay she came back with cuts all over her and was terrified of us like someone was beating her there. They sell 3ft alligators out of 3ft long tanks with not even enough water for them too submerge. read more

Long story short.. Nice girl that helped me. Prices are a scam. Some guy in there got super defensive when I went to take some returns. Long story; I'm new to fish Hobbie and I want to start a salt water tank, so I had tons of questions for the girl. She answer most with the best she could and she couldn't she would ask another guy for help. She taught me a lot,, So I wanted to leave with something to let her know her time wasnt wasted.i want to add that my friend bought the stuff. I bough sand($75) and a water heater($45). Next day, I went to another shop, pet topia(rank as one of the best in kc) nice people again. I started to compare prices. Sand $40, water heater$25, and others. I started to question. I looked online. There's no such thing as a $75 sand bag, not even close. I'm not a guy to take things back but at that price difference I had to. Day after. I asked the girl about return policies, she said " if you have a receipt, you're good to go" so in my head all I need is the receipt. Remind you my friend bought it. But this is the conversation. Me: I'm here to return some stuff Employee: do you have the receipt? Me: here you go Employee: do you have the card Me: card? Employee: yeap I need it so I can put the money back (I don't do returns) Me: I need the card, but the girl said all I need is the receipt Employee: no you need the card Me: *remember I have her card. I went in to look for a reptile for myself and my husband, the owner was MORE than helpful, VERY knowledgeable about every animal I asked about. I got my husband a pink foot tarantula , with that was a very generous discount on the setup. Then I got my self a ball python, as there were three different breeds of ball pythons I had many questions about health, maintenance, and behavior on the different types of ball pythons. Answered all my questions confidently, and I went with the original ball python. VERY docile snake which means they HAVE to handle the animals and reptiles to be so calm. First noticed puppies for sale (no store should be selling dogs in 2019); they were in awful, tiny cages. Went to look for feeder fish & saw the main reason for one star, baby alligators. The most irresponsible & ridiculous reptile to be sold to the public. How & why is still legal when most of KC has banned is beyond me. Will never return. read more

I want to shop at this shop because it is within walking distance of my apartment, but the owner is so RUDE i cant even bring myself to spend money there. I went in one time to ask for an application. I have experience in pet shops, and know a lot about the animals. I have noticed that the employees there seem to have little, if any, knowledge about animals themselves. So I thought I might be of some help. I asked the clerk for an app, and the owner walks up and asks why he is looking for. He tells him, and then the owner turns to me and points "You cant wear THOSE in here!" Referring to my nose ring and my Monroe." Taken aback, I reply that if that is all he is really concerned about, and not knowledge and experience, than just to forget it. I walked out of the store in a rage, exclaiming that it was his loss and not mine. Today I needed a quick supply, so against my better judgement, I walk to the store to try on thunderjackets for my dog. I ordered one online, and was worried that I got the wrong size. I was going in there to fit them, and buy the smaller one if I needed to. When I asked to try on the jacket, and told him I needed to size it, and i had already ordered and was worried, and he just laughs in my face. This is when he finally decided to pay attention to me and "help" me, rather than chit chat with some lady about nothing relevant to pets or pet supplies. This set me off a little. He has been rude to me EVERY time I have shopped in his store, and why? Because I have a ring in my nose? I have a tattoo on my arm? I told him that I was glad he found it funny. He turned around and asked what I said. I repeated myself and said that he was being very rude to me. He said he just laughs at funny things. And I told him that he was laughing at me, and I did not find it funny. Then he slaps the small thunderjacket on the counter and walks away. Refusing the help me the rest of the time I am in the store. This just is an ass. Plain and simple. He is discriminatory. I wouldn't be surprised if he was also rude to anyone that wasn't white that walked into his store. I will NEVER shop here again, and I hope you wont either. You cant treat people like that. I love my dog, and I am no different than anyone else who loves theirs...but he definitely thinks he is better than me. read more

We had boarded our two dogs at Mission Pet Mart three times, in small increments of time working up to a full weekend when we would be out of town and needing them boarded. These first times seemed great- my pups were ready when I can to picked them up, and have the nail trims that I had ordered. The price is very reasonable for boarding. However, our experience dramatically changed for the worse when we picked up the dogs after their 2 day weekend stay. When we arrived Sunday to pick them up at the time that we had arranged in advance to do so, the dogs were not ready and the (very young) helpers seemed very surprised and flustered that we were there to get them. It took about 15 minutes for our dogs to be brought out, and there was no "report card" as usual, nor could they contact the person who was looking after out dogs for the weekend! Something was definitely not right and fishy about the whole scenario, and we suspect that the dogs were heavily neglected during this visit. It was like they completely forgot about them! Our big dog literally lost about 10 pounds over the weekend, she was skinny and sick looking, and must have been throwing up and not eating all weekend. She peed for SO long when we took her outside that it was clear she had not been let out since the night before. I immediately took her to the vet, where she was tested and and nothing wrong with her except signs of stress and trauma. We are still recovering her personality since this instance, she is demonstrating severe abandonment issues that were mild prior to this boarding experience. The dog care-giver did call two days later to apologize about the report card being missing and tell me about the dogs behavior over their stay. She did not mention the not eating, fear, and urinary problems that we noticed our dog had immediately after their visit, and I suspect that the "report" was made-up to save face. I hope that this is a fluke for our pets and does not happen to everyone- but I would never board my dogs there again. read more

I have used Mission Pet Mart twice now to board my dog and once for grooming. The grooming was great, she came out and discussed the bath & cut with me prior to taking my dog and was very happy with the results. I can't remember the exact price but it was around $35-$40 which is pretty usual. They do charge by the size the dog and I have a 30lbs cocker mix. I have been satisfied with the boarding except the hours of operation. You can't drop off or pick up before 10am for boarding so I can't do it before work. Also, you have to pick up by 1pm but that is pretty standard anywhere I have been. The boarding for my dog is $17/night which I think is based again on her size. They have options for all day play, 30 minutes of play with other dogs and individual play with the employees. My dog always come back clean and they have even washed her blanket before I picked her up. read more

Mission Pet Mart was a pet store I happened upon while in the area. Their marine fish selection is wonderful and the fish seem pretty healthy. They also have a large selection of live rock, freshwater and pond fish which is nice. The major problem I have is that the puppies, small animals and reptiles they sell don't seem to be in the best shape. The pups are often covered in poop (at least the times I've been there) but they do seem happy non the less. I purchased a chameleon from them and he seemed pretty ok when I got him. After having him for less than a month, he up and stopped eating one day and passed a couple days later and when I took his body to the vet to see what had happened they informed me he had a sever intestinal worm problem and that he was suffering from MBD (metabolic bone disorder, a calcium deficiency problem caused by improper feeding and lighting.) Overall, if you are shopping for fish give it a go- they really seem to know what they are doing in that aspect! I'd stay clear of the reptiles though- I know because of my problem I'm not shopping there again. read more

ZERO STARS!!!! I hope you read this review first and do not shop at this local establishment. It pains me to write it, as I always try to shop local, but today threw me over the edge. Yes this store is convenient, good variety, and is local, but I received terrible customer service. So much so that I was compelled to write this review. I bought an item for my dog and was told, after asking, that I could return it if it didn't work for my dog. I SPECIFICALLY asked if it could be returned as it was pretty expensive. Well, it didn't work, so i brought it back and was denied a refund because I used it on my dog. Normally this wouldn't bother me and I would understand, but the person behind the counter remembered me, remembered our conversation and remembered saying she would give me a refund, but then said she couldn't. On top of that, her manager said it couldn't be returned either. I said to her 'But you told me I could return it if it didn't work!', and she said she knows but she could not accept it. I then gave her another chance and said 'Are you sure you want to do this? To go back on your word?' and she said 'I'm sorry but i can't' accept it.' If an establishment cannot stand by their word and honor their commitment, they will not get my business, and I will share my experience with others. read more

I have boarded our two dogs there several times, though I do not think our dogs get much attention, and always felt guilty leaving our dogs, but we have two pitbulls and finding an accepting boarding facility is a challenge. We pay for the play time but I have no idea if they actually get the play time and if they do I don't think it's for very long. Most times our dogs would get baths before we picked them up. This time, we were on our honeymoon, so my parents picked up the dogs. There was no "report card"-I don't think I have ever gotten one. But, our dogs did bring home fleas, and I had given each one a flea treatment specifically before we left. Not a word was mentioned about this to my parents when they picked them up. My mom immediately noticed the fleas when they got in the car. Needless to say we won't be boarding there anymore. read more

I have used Mission Pet Mart both for boarding and as a customer buying things for my 2 year-old shepherd mix, Charlie. I have found the store to always be clean, the staff is always very friendly, and they have a great selection of fish and small pets, along with pet supplies. The store is bigger than it looks on the outside, and things are pretty easy to find. The only qualm I may have (if I had to have one) with Mission Pet Mart are the prices- of course, being an independently owned store, they are bit a pricier than PetSmart, but usually only by a few dollars. And most of the time, if I already know what I am getting, I'd rather support locally-owned businesses that drive a little farther for PetSmart. As far as boarding goes, I boarded Charlie over the 4th of July weekend for about 3 nights. He was allowed to bring some toys with him, along with some dog food. I was impressed that they gave me a questionnaire to fill out before I dropped Charlie off for the boarding, which includes his interests, if he could do any tricks, and any important information the staff should know. That really made me feel like they were making an attempt to recognize my dog as an individual pet and part of my family, not just another animal. The price per night for boarding was reasonable and about the same as what I found in other boarders in the area, I think it was $20 per night. I also paid an additional $8 per day for doggy day care during the day, where Charlie could pay with the other dogs for part of the day, so he wouldn't be in a kennel for the entire time. When I picked him up, the staff knew who 'Charlie' was and beamed about what a good dog he was. He certainly seemed to enjoy himself as well. I use Mission Pet Mart for my everyday pet needs (toys, rawhide, etc.) and I would highly recommend it. You get more personalized service and it's a lot more convienent. I've been coming here on and off for years. The staff have always been helpful and kind okay prices and overall not a bad experience the only issue I have is more often than not the aquatic life they keep seem to not be treated the best. It's just disappointing to go into a store and see so many tanks with dead fish. As a long time fish keeper I feel that they could do better to care for these animals and make sure they are getting proper diets and more Adequate care. So many dead mandarins. I understand that it's stressful for the fish too so I can only say it's the stores fault but if I saw several holding tanks with fish who had died days ago. When they start to decay it's obvious how long those dead fish were left to rot away. Not to mention a poor selection of corals too. I figured once they got new management and people in there things were getting better but nothing worse than seeing these beautiful creatures just lay there dying. read more

I started coming in here for fish supplies for my new tank. Over the course of about a year I have bought about thirty fish total. Out of those thirty fish half died in the first day of buying them. I have had better luck going to Petco or Petsmart. I bought java moss from them just a few days ago. It was supposed to be fresh from their supplier. It looked green in the cup. I got it home and upon taking it out realized it was the green water making it look green. The moss was brown and dead. The staff is hit or miss. Small "designer dogs" (shih tzus, etc) are kept in 2x3' white boxes, no toys, no food, just a little hamster water dispenser. Almost made my girlfriend cry. An awful way to keep these little animals. No stimulation with other animals, just a tiny containment cell and a steep price tag. It was especially warm in there today as well. read more

Zero stars. I stopped in for the first time to buy my cat a collar. I noticed that there were puppies, but they did not seem to be well taken care of. These dogs were in very very small cages with no blankets, no toys and were on uncomfortable-looking grates that I imagine allow pee and poop to drain. The cages only had a water dispenser like in hamster cages. There was no information posted about the dogs (age, gender, breed) - the only information I saw was financing pamphlets. I'm guessing these puppies were very expensive and not rescues. All of the puppies looked absolutely miserable. It was heartbreaking. I did not buy the cat collar, and I recommend that no one supports this store because of the apparent lack of compassion for animals. read more

There is an older guy who is quite knowledgeable on fish, which is a bonus. What he lacks in personality, he makes up for in brains. They seem to have quite the focus on fish, but they do have supplies for other pets, too. It's in a fairly convenient location; the only downside is that it is in MISSION. We won't shop here again! We were told the fish we purchased had a guarantee on them. When we called after a fish had died, the woman asked us to bring in a water sample. Our water tested fine, but the staff said they couldn't give a refund. They proceeded to rudely explain what we should have done differently in the tank even though they were the ones who told us what was needed to set it up in the first place. Quite an ironic situation when many of the fish in their tanks were dead! When I asked again if a refund could be issued per their guarantee, they suggested coming back at a later date for a store "lifestock" credit. This place is amazing! My dog Goliath loves it so much that when I so much as say the word "daycare," his ears perk up and he gets incredibly excited to go see his friends at this wonderful facility. The staff is beyond friendly, and are like a second family to my little fur baby. Goliath also gets along with all of the other puppies as well! It is so rare to find a place that actually cares about the well being and happiness of your pup as much as you do, but this place truly does.
