Carmel is known for being dog-friendly, so I was surprised by how Mission Ranch Inn handled a basic ADA situation. They don't allow pet dogs due to nearby sheep, which I understand, but service animals are protected by law. Instead of asking the required legal questions, the staff gave me cold stares and made no effort to handle it properly. It was clear they weren't trained and had no idea how to comply. I left and won't be back. They need to train their staff on ADA requirements. read more

Everything about my dinner at Mission Ranch was superb, from the serene view to the perfectly cooked food. The ambiance was also ideal: you can dress comfortably but still have an elevated dining experience. I also appreciated their "no use of cellular phones at the table" rule. I did sneak a few photos, but other than that, you are encouraged to enjoy the peaceful environment. I highly recommend the Whiskey Marinated Beef Brochette - the meat was tender and sweet, it was truly delectable! My partner ordered the Jidori Chicken, but I think he was a little less impressed with his dish (it lacked flavoring/seasoning). I would recommend sticking with a red meat. Nonetheless, this was easily my favorite meal from our recent trip to Carmel. read more

I enjoyed my time here for dinner in July on Tuesday night with my girlfriends. It was almost a two hour wait but we had drinks by the piano bar, put in some song requests and sang along, and also walked around the grounds with our drinks. They'd give us a call when our table was ready. For dinner, we had salads, salmon, shrimp fettuccine, veggie dishes, garlic bread (which was free), and more drinks. I had a lot of pasta so I took it to-go and it was still yummy the next day. We sat outside by the fireplace and had space heaters by us too. It was a nice scenery with the pasture and animals nearby and ocean in the far distance. Our waiter was very attentive. As we were eating dinner, people were singing and dancing to the piano player's songs inside and it looked like they were all having a good time. Got there around 4:15, waited about 45 min (it's a nice wait - you can just roam the grounds and stare at the sheep), got a great outdoor seat where we could see the sheep and sit in the sun (it was a cool June day - they have heaters but I would still bring a jacket). Love the complimentary garlic bread! Real garlic, maybe olive oil, herbs, a touch of salt? Oysters: I'm not a huge fan of raw oysters but I think these are some of the best I've had just because they were smaller/more compact, but still flavorful and not funky or top vinegary or anything. Simple and elegant. Pork chop wrapped in bacon: VERY good. Like a dreamy pork belly with a caramelized lightly crispy outside, chewy juicy inside, plenty of fat and protein. Savory blended perfectly with the sweetness of the maple glaze. The sweet poached apple was the "cherry" on top. The spinach was also excellent and probably cooked in the pan right after, so it maintained the pork sweet/fatty flavor. And the mashed potatoes were buttery, also had some of the maple glaze, smooth and perfect. Would definitely get again. Exceeded expectations. Oh, and of course the bacon wrapped around was also good, but really more of a delightful crispy and then chewy textural garnish :) Good enough portion to share between two! Red sangria: Good! Not too sweet. I only tried a sip of my partner's. Peaches and cream: The heavy cream makes this a real treat. Basically melted ice cream with a touch of fizzy sprite. Perfect! Try mixing a Costco seltzer, regular milk, and maple syrup at home for a special similar treat. Bread pudding: No complaints! Buttery, raisin, cinnamony, moist sweet bread with a soft whipped cream. We've had a range of bread puddings from very dry/cakey to extremely moist and super sweet. I'd say this was a regular moist, just right, not insanely sweet but quite sweet, plenty of bourbon sauce to go around every bite. The best we've had (for our sweeter palate) was in New Hamburg, Canada at a Scottish restaurant! Pineapple ginger sorbet: Excellent! If you love both these things (which I do), you'll like this. It's got a ginger spice kick mixed with the sweetness of a dole-whip-like Italian ice. read more

6/21/2025 Sat Dinner We were in Monterey for the Rock and Rod Festival and decided to head to Mission Ranch for dinner. It was a short 20-minute drive from the Monterey Wharf. We arrived around 4:40 p.m., but the parking lot was completely full due to a wedding on the property. We drove through the property and exited from the back, turned left, and found a few parking spots marked "visitors only." We weren't sure if they belonged to Mission Ranch or the neighboring elementary school, but since it was a Saturday evening and school was out, we parked in one of the empty spaces. We put our name down for a table on the outdoor patio. The wait was about an hour and a half. The maître d' mentioned that if a cocktail table became available, they'd seat us there for drinks while we waited. We waited until around 6 p.m. and had just settled into a cocktail table when the maître d' waved us over and seated us at a dinner table. We were lucky to be seated at a two-top facing the meadows, with the best view: the beach to the right, sheep grazing on the left, and even a glimpse of three deer munching on leaves nearby. We ordered the arugula and burrata salad, artichoke, crab cakes, and Smoked Pork ribs, along with a complimentary basket of garlic bread. For drinks, we had a hard cider and a cran -palmer. We ended the meal with the rustic apple galette à la mode. Everything was delicious, though the Smoked Pork ribs were a bit on the salty side. I thought the sauce could've used a touch more honey to balance it out. It's easy to see why this place is so popular, it's incredibly relaxing to sit outside, enjoy a meal with friends and family, and take in the beautiful scenery and unplugged from everyday distractions. Absolutely loved mission ranch restaurant. We got there at 5pm when they opened and there was a line of about 10 parties waiting to be seated. We were the last able to be seated outside, thank goodness we made the cut. Otherwise, we would have had to wait 2 hours for tables to open. Be smart about the time to show up. I heard they will have drinks/apps at 3pm and this is when the smart people show up to scout out the tables and are the first to be seated at 5pm. I'll take this tip next time from our waitress. You're paying for the experience. We came on a Saturday at 4:30 pm and there was already a line of 18ish peolle ahead of us when it opens at 5pm. Parking is plentiful and it's just a beautiful scenery all around. The resturaunt itself is dated but I think it's meant to feel that way being a barnyard-style. We were seated in the older dining hall in the back (large room) as outdoor seating was going to be 2 hours according to the hostess. Appetizer, I was recommended the artichoke ($14) and it honestly was the most disgusting thing I ever ate. The entire artichoke had like 3 spoon full of goodness and the rest were just leaves. Maybe it's something they feed the sheeps outside. Prime rib: 3/5. The cut is a regular select cut at most, not even close to USDa choice (see photo, no marbelling), closer to being the loin end. It was cooked very nice at medium rare but tasted very low end. The green beans that came with the meal were undercooked and had a rubbery taste to it. Baked potato and wasabi were amazing, easily 5/5 Service was definitely just okay, we had an older lady who spent more time giggling with other guests than refilling everyone else's water. All in all, it's definitely a place to vibe and get a feel for fresh air and just utmost beautiful scenery. Skip the dining experience and go elsewhere. read more

Words do not do Mission Ranch justice. This is a Carmel staple. They do it how it should be done top to bottom. Excellent service, great views, and tremendous food that could not be more fresh. Great for date nights, great for happy hour, and the best for special occasions. If you're here for the day you have to at least attempt to get a table here. It's usually pretty busy but missing out on Mission Ranch is not an option when within 25 miles. Live music is always great, be warned though it is loud, but that doesn't take away from the experience at all. Walk around the grounds while you wait and try to get there for a sunset. We couldn't have asked for a better weekend of weather, second week of December! Nearly 70* and clear. Loooved room #40 overlooking the sheep pasture. The large balcony on the second floor offered a beautiful view of the sheep, deer, cranes and ocean. Once in a while we could even hear a wave crashing in the distant Pacific. The spacious suite was beautifully decorated in warm neutral shades of cream. The marble in the bathroom and shower was gorgeous. Mission Ranch is the kind of place that makes you feel like you've stepped into a postcard. It has gorgeous views, rustic charm, and a touch of old-school elegance. We arrived right at 5 PM when dinner service starts, and there was already a line forming. They do not take reservations, so plan accordingly. Seating is available inside or on the patio, with heaters outside, but they are not pet-friendly, even on the patio. We opted to sit indoors near the bar, which turned out to be a fantastic choice. The live piano player and open mic created a surprisingly perfect combo that added to the restaurant's unique character. The starter menu was too good to pass up, and we went all in, ordering Oysters on the Half Shell and the Prince Edward Island Mussels with chorizo, leeks, shallots, garlic, and a white wine cream sauce. The mussels were the clear standout of the night. Bold, flavorful, and the kind of dish you keep going back to long after you are full. For my entrée, I had the Roasted Rack of Lamb with a mustard-herb rub, roasted marble potatoes, and sautéed Swiss chard, garnished with whole roasted garlic. It was cooked beautifully with plenty of food, and I had enough leftovers to bring home. Always a win. Of course, dessert was a must. I went for the Bread Pudding with bourbon sauce and whipped cream, paired with an espresso martini because classics are classics for a reason. Mission Ranch is dripping in history and charm. The Gist: The view does a LOT of heavy lifting for this place. For tourists, this is worth visiting as a 1-time experience for the view, and the food is acceptably good though unremarkable by Carmel's high standards. For locals, we can do better. The good: * The view is pretty great. So good that as a 1-time visit, it's worth prioritizing coming here if you're a tourist. But keep in mind that not all seating has a view of the ocean, Pt Lobos and/or the grazing sheep. * We've found the serving staff acceptably competent. The Meh: * Carmel sets a high standard for dining. From our experiences, the food is acceptably good, but unremarkable for the price point. If you just want the Carmel Mission view, brunch is a better investment in your time than dinner. The Not good: * We are not a fan of the bar staff and front-desk/greeting staff. If you go here, you won't be, either. They will barely deign to acknowledge your existence. We have not encountered anything there that justifies the attitude. Star rating (tourist): 3.5 of 5, but go for brunch knowing that the 4 stars are for the view, not the dining experience. Star rating (local): 2 of 5. We won't hate on the place and give 1 star, as the food's acceptably good though unremarkable. But the bar staff and greeting staff cost this place at least 1 star. Famously preserved and restored by Clint Eastwood himself, Mission Ranch is a beautiful property that is a must visit in Carmel. The restaurant is old school, an ode to yesteryear if you will. It's like fine dining from thirty years ago, and yet it still delivers a wonderful dining experience. ***They do not take reservations*** Dinner is from 5:00-9:00pm and piano music is played every night. We walked in a little after doors opened and not to our surprise the restaurant was packed. Luckily we were able to get a table upon arrival without waiting. The piano bar was in full swing. It would've been nice to sit on the outdoor patio, but with the breezy weather we were happy to be inside. They do have plenty of heaters just in case. With beautiful views of the meadow and the Pacific Ocean in the distance, on a nice night definitely opt for al fresco! Food wise, the wife and I were both pleased with our choices. Complimentary bread hits the table fairly quickly. The Crab Cake appetizer was delicious, I just wish there was more of it! We both had one each, and for $21 I would've loved to see a third one added to the plate. The Stuffed Berkshire Pork Tenderloin was something I wouldn't normally order, but I was indecisive and trusted the server's recommendation. I'm really glad I ordered it, because it was mighty tasty. It was moist and filled with yummy ingredients. The accompanying greens and potato gratin were enjoyable as well. Dinner at Mission Ranch, as well as touring the property, is on most must-do lists in Carmel. I believe it's totally worth it. Just get there early, so you can snag a table right away. Been wanting to come here for a while now and once I finally had the chance to, we had such a terrible experience. We solely wanted to get drinks and order off the bar menu at the patio and so we were seated within 20 mins. There were 2-3 open tables at the patio and so we asked if we could move to one of the other tables for more room. Our waitress told us they would let us know later and right after she took our order, I noticed another party asked her if they can swap tables with one of the 2-3 open tables and she let them move immediately. They had the same size party as us so I was confused why she wouldn't let us move. After 10-20 minutes when she came back around I asked her if we would be able to swap tables again because she let the other party do so and she seemed to get pretty irritated and gave me attitude telling me to be patient with her as she is busy handling lots of orders. I know her job isn't easy and it can get overwhelming, but personally, I thought it was very unprofessional blaming her lack of service on the crowd. 30-45 minutes later by the time we were almost finished with our drinks and our appetizers, the waitress comes back and tells us we can move to one of the open tables which was ridiculous because we were practically done at that point. Don't get me wrong, I would definitely love to come back because I thought the views and the atmosphere were amazing. Its Pebble Beach week and I would like to share some places I hit during a recent trip. We stayed at an airbnb in Carmel during a boys golf trip to Pebble Beach. One of my regulars has been coming to Mission Ranch nearby for years, and suggested we try it. The ranch dates back to the 1800's and is currently owned by Clint Eastwood. There is also an inn on the property, tennis & pickleball courts and grazing sheep. We started off w/ oysters and smoked salmon. The oysters were very fresh and sweet. Likewise, the smoked salmon went well w/ the crackers and accoutrements. I had an arugula & burrata salad for my main (I had a heavy late lunch earlier). The burrata was super fresh and paired well w/ the peppery arugula and sweet pear. Regarding the ambiance, its quaint and inviting w/ piano bar and full bar. When other places in this area are striving to be staunchly refined, this place brings the bawdy party. There are two dining areas, indoor pub style seating and outdoor firepit patio. Even on a cool night we were warm inside the low ceiling dining due to all the fireplaces. We began at an outdoor cocktail table overlooking the sheep herd and then transferred to the interior bar dining room. On a Tuesday night the house was rocking. Imagine your favorite karaoke friends performing live with piano and recorded soundtracks. The hired entertainers were just that. The food was excellent, the veggie plate was loaded and the filet mignon au poive cooked perfectly. Waiter was busy but friendly and on point. He told us we were there on a slow night, ha! Thursday night a little bit after 5pm was about a 15-20min wait to sit outside although the host had initially said it could be up to an hour wait. I didn't appreciate that when we came in and were right in front of the host she didn't acknowledge us. I also found a little tiny orange speck of something in my water, which I just took out myself but then I also found a dried piece of something green on my fork, and my boyfriend's red wine had some random thing stuck to the inside of the cup too. That's disappointing considering it's an upscale restaurant but our server was very nice. I wanted to sit at the tables right by the fence which were made for 2 but the only open one was reserved for their hotel guests, and we were sat at a table for a larger group of people further away from the view. A Longtime Favorite, But Disappointed on a Special Night. I've been coming to Mission Ranch my entire life--since before I was born. My family has celebrated many special occasions here over the years, and I've always dreamed of getting married at this beautiful property someday. That's why it's so difficult to rewrite my original five-star review after such a disappointing experience on my parents' 47th wedding anniversary. We arrived right at opening in hopes of getting a window or outdoor table to enjoy the views. Unfortunately, the service from the start was cold and unwelcoming. The host manager--a tall, older woman with curly blonde hair--greeted us with no smile or warmth. The young woman who seated us was even less professional: very thin, with blonde highlights and dark roots in a ponytail, visibly irritated and disengaged. She moved around the room with a slouched, stomping walk, rolling her eyes and speaking inappropriately with fellow staff. She told us there would be a 1 1/2 hour wait for a window table or 45 minutes for outdoor seating. Sadly, our server wasn't much better. She wasn't rude, but the service was awkward and uncomfortable. She lingered at the table and made oddly expressive comments that made us feel rushed, like she expected us to order more quickly or keep the pace moving. Two drinks were forgotten and had to be reminded. Overall, the tone of service was not warm or celebratory, and it stood in stark contrast to what we've come to expect at Mission Ranch. The food also missed the mark. My scallops were underwhelming, and every entrée came with the same undercooked broccoli. The steak was heavily covered with strong herb butter with oregano or tarragon. Most disappointing was watching several beautiful window-side tables sit empty while we were told they were reserved--only to see them filled later by other guests who arrived long after us. There were a few positives: the bartenders were wonderful and attentive, and my "Pink Whale" cocktail was excellent. The live piano music in the bar remains a highlight, and the atmosphere in the bar area still carries some of the magic Mission Ranch is known for. But the overall experience made it feel like the charm and polish of Mission Ranch has slipped--from a refined, upscale spot to something far more casual and disorganized. We even saw a guest who appeared unhoused seated at the bar and children running through the dining area, which added to the feeling that standards have changed. I'm still hopeful. I want to continue bringing my family here for milestones, and I'd love for my next visit to change this review back closer to five stars. read more

This might be the most stunning place I've ever had a meal in my whole life and I would go back simply for the views. The food was really underwhelming given the whole vibe of the place. The complimentary garlic bread and oysters were the best parts of the meal. The crab cakes, filet mignon, and scampi linguine honestly all felt like airplane food. The pasta was very wet and the sauce was not creamy, more watery and thin and the noodles themselves were overcooked so it made the whole texture of the dish wet and mushy. The steak was insanely underdone. My partner asked for medium rare and it was so so purple inside like it looked ever rarer than rare. Thankfully the staff comped the cost of the steak and we did call it out politely and gently and did not expect them to front the bill for it. We did not stay for dessert due to concern about how it might be. If the food itself is more important to you than ambiance, I wouldn't get a whole meal here. Definitely a great place for the views and ambience. The place is charming and inviting. The service and food however was quite disappointing. Bring a local hotel manager I've actually referred many guests here and now I feel bad. The server, "Tad" was curt, never asked to refill our drinks so they were empty for about a hour & a half, never asked how the food was, and we sat waiting for our bill long after the table was cleared. I got the impression that since we had just come in from a workday & didn't look polished that we were overlooked compared to his other tables. You know when the prime rib is easier to cut then the scallops that is a red flag. The scallops were dry, tiny and chewy. I guess I was comparing them to the Shadowbrooke so I guess that's my fault. One person in our party tried the ribs appetizer and loved it the portions are a good size for appetizers. We ordered crab cakes which were very good. For dinner we ordered whiskey marinated beef brochette which was a good portion. We also ordered the prime rib, jumbo sea scallops and the coriander king salmon. I ordered the salmon which was a good portion, I liked the light cream sauce and the rice. The service was friendly and we plan to return here in the future.
