I have no idea what this is but it was so good

Wow... what a treat. My friends treated me to Mister Jius and I'm honored Everything was so good. I actually loved the portion sizes about 2 items per person. It made everything feel shareable, and I really liked the pacing of the courses. Our food came out slowly, which I personally enjoyed because we could actually savor each dish before moving on. If you're someone who prefers everything at once though, I'd just let your server know! The duck is mandatory pre-order in advance. It was hands down the best dish. The apricot sauce?? Unreal. The portion is huge too.... perfect for making wraps. And the pâte.... ugh, so good. I already know I need to come back just for that. That said, a lot of the other dishes came really close. The salad was honestly spectacular, the fried rice came last so it was filling but still really well done, and the carpaccio (sea cucumber, sea squirt or something like that) was interesting... personally I liked it more when everything was mixed together, but the table had mixed opinions. Also, the Vesper is a great martini if you're deciding on drinks. I swear our table basically ordered the whole menu... we were so full we couldn't even do dessert Shoutout to JT, our server it was a busy night and he still took great care of us. The service, food, and overall vibe were all amazing. We didn't make it up to the rooftop bar because we were exhausted, but the space is so cute. Definitely coming back for that next time.

Had a birthday dinner at Mister Jiu's in Chinatown and was really excited to finally try the restaurant! I've been to Moongate Lounge upstairs a few times but never the actual dining room. Walking in, the space felt upscale yet comfortable, and it was surprisingly busy for a Wednesday night. We started with two cocktails, the salt & vinegar shrimp chips and the spicy cumin lamb wontons. We almost didn't order the chips because I thought they'd be like the ones from the Asian market, but they were actually amazing and the portion was generous. The salmon rangoon dip that came with it completely sold us. The wontons were also really good, though a bit too Szechuan spicy for me. For entrees we got the Hokkien fried rice with Dungeness crab and the braised beef cheek. The fried rice was easily my favorite dish because of its huge pieces of crab and really well-balanced flavors. I was a little disappointed with the braised beef cheek though because it was super salty, and even eating it with rice didn't balance it out. Overall still a really nice dining experience (thought pricey) and I'm glad we finally tried the restaurant!

The duck was great: I loved that there was such a many variety of foods from one duck. Legs, wings, skin, liver mousse, heart skewers, and a not sashimi style cut. It was delicious, the skin smoky and crispy, the meat flavorful and umami, and the rawer cut tender and delicious kind of like tuna. Much of the meat was a bit fatty at times. The liver mousse is a bit gamey but goes well when mixed together with everything else. The sauce goes great in the wrap, and the cilantro too surprisingly. Even the turnips. The scallion milk bread was unforgettable. The honey, butter, and scallion flavor go surprisingly well together, and the bread is fluffy inside. The orange chiffon cake was very light and fluffy, going well with the peanut and not very sweet. Everything else was really good too, as well as the cocktails and tea, but what I named above stood out most. Also note that the spicy entrees have quite a bit of heat. The server was great, explaining how everything works, giving suggestions, making sure things came at a good cadence. He answered all our questions, changed out our plates, etc. At the end he split the leftover duck into 4 bags for us to take home. One member of our party was sick less than 24 hours before the reservation but they happily took one off the reservation and deposit when I emailed them. The inside feels quite fancy with beautiful chandeliers, candles, paintings etc. The restroom is nice, adorned with golden curtains and equipped with lavender hand soap. And there's a convenient rack at the entrance for coats and umbrellas. The drink menu is cute with photos of Chinese people, same with the take out bags. Each dish came with forks and spoons for public serving but that feels a bit unnecessary. The cups and teapots were fancy. The outside gives great vibes as well being on Chinatown. It was a small alleyway with lanterns hanging above. There were fireworks going off when we left. For 100+ per person, it's not bad at all.

We returned to Mister Jiu's to celebrate our anniversary after our first experience was takeout only--and dining in was a whole different (and wonderful) experience. From the moment we arrived, the hostess seated us at the *perfect* table overlooking Chinatown, complete with glowing red lantern views. The ambiance was on point: great music, warm energy, and a bar that felt modern yet thoughtfully rooted in traditional Asian design. Service was exceptional across the board, from our attentive server to the chefs who personally delivered our dishes. The food hit that sweet spot of nostalgic Chinese flavors we grew up with, elevated by creative, modern twists. Everything we tried was outstanding, and we're already planning our next visit to work through the rest of the menu. What we ordered: * Pan Fried Turnip Cake: So tasty - our fav dish * Juicy Pork Dumplings: meaty but not soupy * Trout Roe & Lobster Coral Cheong Fun: beautiful dish and more veggie forward * Hokkien Fried Rice with Dungeness Crab: saucy and filling * Braised Beef Cheek Claypot: TENDER cheeks with collagen..tasty with rice (or wine) A memorable anniversary dinner and an easy place to recommend!

It is always a good experiences at Mister Jiu's. They have a great open space and welcoming staff. We like the tables by the front windows as you get a nice view of all the red lanterns over china town at night. The food is really good. Some of their appetizers are unique in flavor and worth trying. Their main dishes are extremely generous. The waiters will let you know about the quantities, and they are always right/accurate. I have not been impressed with their dessert selection. Good drink selection and prices are what you would expect in nicer SF restaurants.

Great meal. Different desserts but the tasting menu was great. About $150-175 a person. Service was excellent and the food portions were massive! Especially the fish.

And just like that, another Michelin dining experience, checked off the list. The experience overall was absolutely the worst Michelin dining experience that I've had. This was from start to finish. Reservations should be easy to make, especially online. They weren't. Don't bother to call during the day like I did, because they don't have voicemail, instead of some weird recording that implies the number is not working. It's a great way to push customers away. We were celebrating a special occasion, and I was able to bring a cake with us, proved by the restaurant. I specifically let the seating hostess, who took the cake from me know that it needed to be refrigerated. Our party was seated a very uncomfortable table, and not the table that I had requested. I literally could write a book on the lack of detail, Customer Service and so much more. The experience was heartbreaking. The starters that were brought to the table, were shrimp chips, big chunks of raw carrots, with some type of dipping sauce that had not been identified. The shrimp chips were the highlight. No one could eat the carrots or the dipping sauce. First course: new potatoes. I will preface the rest of the review by saying that the waitresses ability to describe with the dishes being offered were, versus what was received was also responsible for how poorly this meal went. The new potatoes were Julian strips of potato soaked in some sort of highly spicy liquid. None of it was edible. The spicy liquid was tongue and mouth numbing. We also had selected the turnip cake. This was pretty tasty and ironically could've used some seasoning. Course two: green beans. A vegetable that you really can't go wrong with. They were absolutely atrocious. Completely covered with a variety of peppers, hot chili peppers and completely overcooked. Essentially a bowl of heat that no one enjoyed. We also selected the milk bread with caviar. Apparently, the waitress didn't care about bringing the caviar to us so we went without. The milk bread was OK, the butter helped. But essentially, this wasn't anything more than basic dinner rolls. Main course/entrée: this is what we came for. The duck! The skin was smoky, crispy, and actually the highlight of the duck. It's one thing to enjoy rare beef, but rare duck, no. Many of the sliced pieces were still very rare if not raw looking. There was also one extremely large slice of rare/raw meat. When the table asked the waitress about it. She pretty much shrugged and said she didn't know why they would put that on the plate. The duck is served with "savory pancakes ". They weren't savory. They were rubbery. We paid an up charge for the pluot sauce, which amounted to about maybe 2 tablespoons. Definitely not worth eight dollars. Dessert was another disappointment. The chrysanthemum ice cream should be a hard pass. It's not sweet, it's not tart, it's just bad. The apricot kernel Jell-O was only slightly a step up from the chrysanthemum ice cream. It frankly tasted like it had been sitting out and not refrigerated. No one wants warm mush. The cake that we were all looking forward to trying that we brought, wasn't brought out to our table, but someone decided to slice it in the kitchen. Someone also did not refrigerate it, which meant that a $75 cake was ruined. The waitress truly did not bother to check in on the table to see how the meal was going, or frankly to offer us drinks beyond when we were seated. That coupled with her inability to describe the food properly, and leading us down a path of a horrible experience is infuriating. This was an extremely expensive experience that we will not be repeating at this restaurant. If you have this on your list, just don't. Not worth the money and you'll leave hungry like we did.

Bok Choy in oyster/garlic sauce Grilled Mala Spiced Black Cod

I had been wanting to try Mister Jiu's for many years. My previous visits never gave me enough time to make a reservation and dine here until now. What didn't set me up for success was thinking this food was reminiscent of the food that I had growing up. I don't know why I thought that because I know Mister Jiu's is upscale dining. Anyhow, the dishes I enjoyed the most were the bok choy and duck. The bok choy tasted exactly like comfort food. The bok choy was crispy, tender and garlicky. The duck was smoked and reminded me more of a French style duck. The duck skin wasn't as crispy as traditional Peking Duck, but I do crave it and would love it in a salad. I was surprised to find the black cod sitting atop tahini and I am a big hater of tahini. Luckily, I could eat the fish with the bok choy sauce and still mostly enjoy the fish. The Mister Jiu experience was nice and I don't regret going. I wanted to check out the upstairs bar, but it was reserved for a private party. This place has a cool, speakeasy-ish vibe. I believe the menu rotates seasonally, but I think the duck is always on the menu and is worth a try.

Really enjoyed my first dining experience here! I was first struck by how cool and hip the restaurant felt, and San Francisco should really be the place to have more elevated and innovative Chinese restaurants. I love that the location was tucked right in the heart of Chinatown. The style of food is fusion-Asian, which I don't always love, but Mister Jiu's did this well. We had the Autumn Banquet Celebration, and while the meal was pretty expensive, we were very full! The one thing I will say is that the course dishes we ate before the signature Peking Duck did feel a little disjointed style wise, but all the individual dishes were very good. The standouts to me were the milk bread and fried rice! By the time we got to the Peking duck we were already very full, but the Peking duck was excellent and was also very good re-heated! I will also say the service was standout for me. Our server was so kind and was ready to provide plenty of recommendations and explanations. Due to a wait for our desserts (which we didn't even notice) the restaurant gave a discount. I feel like I may want to come back even just for the fried rice in the future!

Such a memorable experience. I don't typically write reviews, but Mister Jiu's truly deserves the recognition. The ambiance strikes a perfect balance, rich with history yet distinctly modern, all with an elevated, refined feel. Every dish was exceptional; we quite literally left no crumbs. What truly set the evening apart, though, was the service. Our servers were outstanding...attentive, thoughtful, and genuinely invested in creating a seamless experience. Don't hesitate to book Mister Jiu's. It's absolutely worth it.

This is a very bad restaurant with poor service and bad taste. I waited for an hour for the reservation time, and it took 90 minutes to serve the food. Besides, it's really bad.

I was really looking forward to seeing what the hype was about and it was a little bit of a letdown to be honest. It was a pretty mixed experience. The inside is really nice and spacious with a dark mood. They started by bringing out some Mala peanuts, pickled radish, some tofu sauce (I forget what it was) and shrimp chips. The peanuts were strangely sweet rather than spicy, and the radish really bland. The tofu thing was pretty good; very smooth, creamy and tasty. The shrimp chips were good; tasted exactly like the ones you get at Chinese banquets. The Oysters were pretty decent; the watermelon mignonette was pretty mild and let the oyster be the main flavor. Yusheng (the cultural dish, not Mister Jiu's version) is actually something I've never had before so I don't have anything to compare to. The one here was pretty similar to a crudo and it's pretty enjoyable. Next came the Wok Fried Rice and Green Beans. The rice came with tomatoes which I've really only seen in Thai fried rice. It was still good but nothing extraordinary, and certainly nothing you couldn't find elsewhere. The Green Beans on the other hand were actually some of the best I've ever had. Now, it's relatively common to find stir fried green beans with XO sauce, but there was something about these that was just so much better. They were cooked and seasoned perfectly and the fermented cabbage brought a nice salty hit. I don't know if this is like a backhanded compliment, but for me, green beans... yes green beans... was the best dish of the night. The supposed star of the restaraunt was just ok. The skin wasn't as crispy as I'm used to, but the smoking kind of adds more of a meatiness to the duck than the traditional style. Also, generally, places will use the bones and stuff to make either soup or congee but it doesn't seem like they do that here. Even if you are adding twists and other styles to a very specific regional/cultural dish, I feel that you have to stay true to how the dish is normally served. But that's just me. The acoutrement is fine. There aren't enough pancakes. The dessert was uhh interesting. The Nian Gao is also something that's not very traditional here. It's more like a mochi bread pudding. The way I grew up eating it was steamed, so it had a much different look and texture to how it was served here. Regardless, Nian Gao isn't something that I care for that much anyway, so I appreciate the different approach they took here. I don't have many words for the Apricot Jello; I didn't like it. I'm not sure what they were aiming for here. It's kind of like, if someone never had Chinese food in their life, this would be a servicable place to introduce them to it. But you would be showing them a very... limited view on Chinese food. As a side note, on the night I think I was the only Chinese person eating there on the night lol. I like that they tried something different and I wouldn't mind going back, but I also wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again.

My first time visiting this elegant spot serving elevated Chinese food after hearing a lot about their Peking Duck. Mister Jiu's has a fairly large dining room with windows overlooking Chinatown. It has a Michelin star. They currently have 3 menu options: a 6-course tasting menu (with optional wine or non-alcoholic pairings), a 4-course Peking Duck Summer Banquet menu, and an a la carte menu. Reservations are needed for the multi-course menus, walk-ins are accepted at the bar for the a la carte menu, although you can also reserve a high-top for 2. It seems the Duck Banquet menu was recently introduced; before it may have been an add-on to the tasting menu. This is of course what I ordered. You indicate which menu you're interested in when you reserve, and a deposit is taken. Many of the dishes on the Duck menu are off the a la carte menu. I started with 3 amuses: shrimp chips, radishes with whipped soy milk, peanuts with schezwan pepper. There are 4 choices for the first and second courses, 3 for dessert. My first course choice was the oysters on the half shell with rhubarb mignonette and black pepper. Plump and fresh. The second course was cheong fun rice rolls stuffed with plump manila clams and bok choy with a traditional soy-based sauce. A fond memory from my Cantonese upbringing, elevated. The duck was impressive. As a solo diner, I got half a duck, which was impossible to finish. It's a Liberty Farms duck that takes days to prepare and about an hour to complete its prep after you arrive. The lacquered skin is beautifully browned and crispy, while the breast meat remains a delightful medium rare. You get the breast, a loin, wing, thigh and thigh meat, all with the great skin (except the loin). Served alongside are savory pancakes, cucumber, cilantro and scallions, plus a unique peanut butter hoisin sauce and a rich and fancy duck liver mousse that could be a small starter on its own. An addition tangy pluot sauce is available for an additional cost, as are additional dishes such as fried rice or chow fun; I passed on all since there was plenty to eat already. My dessert was a delish and light apricot kernel jello, a panna cotta of sorts topped with rose geranium-infused strawberries and some mini-boba. Service was excellent and attentive. Overall a high-end fab dinner. As someone who has Peking Duck at least once a year (at Lunar New Year), I was impressed with this duck as well as the entire meal and dining experience. The adjacent table was enjoying the tasting menu, and I'd say the Duck menu is more bountiful.

Mister Jiu's Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Mister Jiu's

    How pricey is this place?

Pretty pricey; it is Michelin-starred after all. Several menu options, most inexpensive would be the bar a la carte menu. Duck and tasting menus are +$200 per person. You choose your menu when you reserve. If you walk in, you'll get the bar menu.

Do you offer gift certificates for purchase?

    yes

I see they assess a Service Charge, on top of the SF mandate. Does anyone know if that covers gratuity or is that in addition as well?

The service charge covers the gratuity. You can always add on extra for exceptional service.

For reservations, it has you pre-select table dishes to go along with the tasting menu. Does the online reservations only limit you to those or can you order other dishes when you're there?

    Additional dishes can be added.

How far in advanced can I try making reservations?

One month unless it's a larger reservation in which case reach out to them directly!

    Is there vegan options?

    I believe so

    Is there a tasting menu?

When I visited, there was a la carte only!

    Are there gluten free options?

Yes! You can ask for a gluten free menu and they will let you know which dishes are gluten free or can be made gluten free.

Are there vegetarian options on the menu?

What's the typical wait time for walk ins on a weeknight?

Do I have to order the Peking duck in advance? I've already made my reservation, just wondering if I need to call to let them know I will be ordering the duck?

No they actually won't let you order until you sit down. I tried. And you have to order everything at the same time

    Do they have outdoor seating?

    No.

    Do they accept walk ins?

Yes! I was able to get bar seating for 5 at 9pm on a weekday!

Can they accommodate someone with a gluten restriction if specified in the reservation?

Yes they were very accommodating of gluten allergies (including Celiac).

    Do they take reservations?

    A must have really

Can you eat full menu at the bar?

Yes! My brother and I are foodies and went here prepared to wait BUT we were offered to sit at the bar and was able to order and eat the full menu at the bar. Wait was way shorter and food came out pretty quick, plus, bartenders were all pretty… Read more

    Is there a happy hour?

    No. There isn't happy hour

Is this a kid friendly establishment?

Not at night, when it feels like a cocktail bar with food. I'm not sure about lunch time. Menu is okay for young adventurous eaters, but not if they're picky.

    Any vegan options?

Yes, my vegan friend dined with a non vegan group of us and she had plenty of options and she really enjoyed her meal.

    Is there a corkage fee?

$35 per 750 ml bottle (can have 2) & $65 per 750 ml bottle after the first 2 bottles

I liked that they had a small squab option which was perfect for two people. The meal started with complimentary cucumbers and peanuts snacks perfect paired with a drink. Everything was delicious but if I pick a favorite, I think it would be the eggplant. The lamb was very tender and flavorful. It's a small restaurant so I would probably only come with 2-4 people. Servers were friendly and accommodating. Food came quickly and dishes had beautiful presentation. We shared the chili crisp pig head, clay pot rice with Chinese sausage and bacon, scallop vermicelli, and XO escargot with milk bread. I enjoyed the free bites of roasted peanuts and smashed cucumbers. Chili crisp pig head was good but got a little too oily immediately. The slices were really thin and there were a bunch of good textures from the chili crisp and the veggies but was a little heavy due to sitting in plate of oil. Clay pot rice didn't stand out to me that much, the tong ho on top helped cut the heaviness at first but there were only ~5 leaves so it ended up being a little too saucy and heavy. I also would've appreciated more toppings in the clay pot rice and rice also didn't get scorched despite leaving it there for most of the meal. Scallop vermicelli wasn't bad, but definitely felt overpriced for essentially 1 piece of scallop and 3-5 bites of vermicelli. Last, the XO escargot with milk bread was unique but also ultimately too oily. The escargot sat in a pool of oil/butter/fats which got a bit too much too. I will say the flavor was definitely there though and the texture of escargot was good. The milk bread was great, smelled fresh and sweet with a soft crunch. Overall I think it was a fun experience to dine here and no regrets, but none of the dishes stood out to me too much in particular to where I'd be running back.

Stopped by Palette Tea House with The Kid after FoodieLand thinking we were just coming for tea... and ended up having a full experience. We sat at the communal high-top table in the center of the restaurant, which has a small pond built into it with little goldfish and even a tiny rubber duck sitting on the rock formation -- such a cute detail and definitely adds to the ambiance. Our server Ken was fantastic and incredibly knowledgeable about the menu. He recommended the Iron Goddess tea, which ended up being excellent. The Kid ordered the Milk Aroma Oolong, which surprisingly tasted almost like milk tea even though it's just brewed tea. Each tea comes with its own kettle, and Ken even came back to refill the hot water for us. For food, we ordered the Wagyu Beef Fried Rice, which was a huge portion and easily shareable. Very flavorful and well prepared. We also tried the Sichuan Seafood Dumplings and the Iberico Pork Dumplings, both of which were delicious. One order is definitely enough to share. The dumplings come with several dipping sauces including soy sauce, vinegar, chili oil, hot mustard, and a cilantro-based sauce that had a slightly sweet, horseradish-like flavor that really stood out. Service throughout the meal was amazing. Even without a reservation, we were seated immediately. As a Michelin-recognized restaurant for 2025, it definitely felt like a special treat and lived up to the experience.

There will be a little bit of a wait if you come at lunchtime, but the changing of tables is so quick, it's worth the wait. My table got many items to try out, including a number of dumplings and main dishes. We have no complaints! The servers were on top of their game, and every time a menu item was brought out, they would cross it out at the table, to ensure all our food was brought out. Each dish came out piping hot (especially the dumpling and wontons), and my favorite main dish was definitely the Braised Seafood + Tofu in Clay Pot. Pair that with some rice and your set. This place was such a vibe! Totally recommend; all our food came out quick --- everything was made-to-order, and they got nothing wrong. 10 out of 10!

This person who took our order asked if there were any allergies, I said soy and her eyes lit up while she calming asked, 'soy-sauce', and I list soysauce and all the soy things that fall in that umbrella. I order my item, the chicken wings and item to share: the pan-fried dumplings, while my partner ordered one of the noodle soups. She comes back later and points out that the noodle soup has soy - much apperciated because people sometimes share, etc. And I said it was just for my partner. -- The chicken wings were plump, crispy, the first two were 'heathly', didn't taste the salt, and the rest were packed with flavor. If you're looking for consistency there is a #1 spot in Chinatown for chicken wings which I will not disclose in this review. But, otherwise, for flavor - I like it here. My partner said he didn't find the ones here oily but I said the bottom ones were a little and I did enjoy it. The panfried dumplings - the meat was succulent and delicious, I didn't think there was enough soup, these ones are smaller than other places, but the meat is massive. They were good, not my favorite ever, but I think the meat was the best hands-down anywhere. - It was very busy with perhaps locals and tourists. The table on our left were these two white men in the architeture field - super vulgar and sexist talking about people they don't like, it would defintely be an HR red flag. And then to the corner on the right, there was this little family who hadn't had soup dumplings before - the grown kids ate with their hands and the parents with forks (I love to see people trying new things), I didn't see all of this going on but I asked my partner who kept looking over.. Yes, my partner was judging you but kudos to trying new things however it is. - For large parties - you'll have to wait awhile. QR waitlist kiosk thing in at the front. ** I truly apperciate food safety and staff being attentive which makes patrons more confident and are able to make more safely informed decisions when ordering.

Busy for dim sum Sunday mornings, every table was full but the workers were very efficient. Almost everything was very tasty and high quality. The bbq sugar pork buns were so good, worth the hype that we saw about them online. The shrimp rice crepes were a bit disappointing - the shrimps inside were really overcooked and some of the pieces still had shrimp tail on them. The soup dumpling were quite small and barely had any soup in them. But the other dishes we got were great.

Having heard many positive reviews and knowing it earned Michelin recognition in 2025, we were excited to sample a variety of dishes from the menu. Overall, the food was good, though we found the flavors to be quite simple. One thing that stood out was how balanced the seasoning was; the dishes were noticeably less salty compared to many other Cantonese restaurants, which may be one of the reasons so many people enjoy dining here. While the food didn't particularly wow us, the overall experience was pleasant, and we're glad we finally had the chance to try it.
