I went here for a friend's birthday, and it was a private dining experience downstairs with about 30 people. It was an 8 to 10 course meal (couldn't keep track) and it was hands-down one of the most delicious meals I've eaten. Every dish was sooooo good and perfectly cooked. And we were at table full of foodies with super high standards. We were so impressed by it and it was so unexpected. It could've been a Michelin star rated restaurant because it was that good. I think of all of the dishes, my most favorite was the caviar topped, shrimp, appetizer, and the beef carpaccio. Also, the bartenders were perfection as well. Every cocktail was so good. This disappointing review is mainly for the service. The food has always been tasty here and I've been a fan since they were a pop up store inside a Rooster and Rice in the Castro. I placed an order on Doordash for pick up today and it took about 20 mins for the restaurant to confirm the order, which I thought was weird but it gave me an estimated pick up time of half an hour so I thought it would be fine if I showed up just a little after that time. I made it to the restaurant 10 mins after the expected pick up time but the host informed me it wasn't ready yet. That was initially fine since I know some delays do happen. However, the delay started stretching 10, then 20 minutes without anyone checking on the order while I was standing there, and when I asked the host to check, I just kept getting a response of should be soon. Finally we asked one server to check the kitchen to see if they got the ticket for the order and after he went in, he just came out with food for another table but no update. After another 10 minutes (at this point it was an hour and 20 minutes after I placed the order on Doordash), we asked another server to check the kitchen and at that point I was informed that their Internet service was down and they weren't processing orders. It was incredulous that it took such a long time to get an acknowledgement of the problem and I couldn't even cancel the order myself because it had already been accepted by the system so I wouldn't get a refund. I had to leave with no food and the promise of a refund after their system came back online. And in fact, after it did come online again, the order was completed instead of cancelled so then I had to go back to the store to sort out the issue. Overall it was a pretty bad customer service experience and while I do like their food, it may be a long while before I give them another chance. Edit: I went back to the restaurant and the server was apologetic, took down my information and agreed to pass a note to the morning crew to have the order ready for me to pick up the next day for lunch at a set time. I arrived to the restaurant 10 mins later than the set time only to find no notes were passed so I still had to wait for the kitchen to cook the meal. Luckily the restaurant isn't quite as busy at lunch so it was quick to get it after the kitchen got the order, but the service recovery from this experience was mediocre. As I said before, the food is awesome and I wish their restaurant continued success. But if they want to move upscale as they have been doing participating in Chase Sapphire tables, etc, they will need to improve service and service recovery when customer issues arise, probably starting with either replacing the internet service provider for a more stable connection or adding a mesh wifi network in the restaurant so the wifi signal reaches further for all their devices. One last suggestion - it might be a good idea to separate the take out portion of the business with the most commonly ordered items and put it in another location or ghost kitchen. That way the main kitchen can focus on the upscale restaurant. read more

We didn't have a great experience, however, our server/the bartender handled the situation well and it wasn't his fault. We sat at the bar, but the entire restaurant looked spacious and well designed. We ordered a banh mi and bo ne. We do not eat pork and requested to remove pate, however, the kitchen insisted it was chicken. At the end of the meal, our server delivered the news. We're sad that this could have been avoided if we had stuck to our gut, but we get that things happen and there was a miscommunication. They comped our meal and our server was very apologetic even though it was not his fault. We hope he isn't too hard on himself, but we hope the kitchen staff and whomever was helping that day relearns the menu and can be aware of allergies and religious preferences for future guests. read more

Stopped by on a Monday at 6pm without a reservation and was told a 2 hour wait for our party of two. We decided to wait because my friend wanted to use her Chase Reserve dining credits before they expired in July. After 2.5 hours, we were seated at the bar, which is reserved for walk-ins while the tables are for reservations. The bartenders were friendly, offered great recommendations, and service was quick. We order 2 cocktails each, 3 shared plates, and an appetizer. Everything was good, but nothing stood out enough to justify the long wait. read more

My parents wanted to celebrate Father's day in the city so I decided to take them here. It's "elevated" vietnamese food and the menu seemed enticing. I made reservations ahead of time for 6 people at 7:30 on Sunday 6/21. We arrived a little earlier than our reservation but were able to get seated right away. It's not in the best neighborhood but the the restaurant itself is gorgeous, decent amount of seating. We sat right by the door so I didn't see much of the back but they have a full bar. The bad: Service almost made me rate this spot 3 stars (more so 3.5) but I'd give it a try again and see. Our server was nice but definitely not tentative. There were no check ups, no water refills. We only saw her whenever she dropped off a dish. We wanted to order more & it took awhile as well. Also not sure if it's the restaurant's way of serving the items, but each dish came out so slow versus a whole spread or at least the entrees could've came out together. It was like we wouldn't get the next dish until we finish the previous entree which I'm not used to at vietnamese restaurants. The good: We order a good variety of food & drink. I will say that although it's meant to be "family style" the portions are pretty "small". I'd say its not shareable for a party of 6. You'd need to order 2 of everything or someone has to barely get a serving. We ordered banh beo which comes with uni. It unforunately only comes with 3 pcs so since we had 6 we ordered 2. I'd have skipped this tbh. It's a very unique take on banh beo but the batter for the banh beo was underwhelming. Too soft, not enough "chew" to it. It was 3 for $19 so pretty steep pricing as well. We also ordered Bun Cha, Bo Luc Lac, Crab fat fried rice, long green beans and Nom. Skip the Nom (vietnamese style papaya salad). My parents did not like this one at all. The dressing used was not the typical one they get. The Bun Cha was the best item. Super flavorful, the broth was sweet yet flavorful. However again, the portion was definitely too little to be "family" style, maybe a party of 2? We had to order extra noodles. Bo Luc Lac was cooked perfectly, juicy tender, good flavor. Crab fried rice was good too. We'd get those 3 items again. For drinks: Hi-Chew, Mango Calamansi Spritz (skip), Vietnamese coffee & Calamansi Sugar Cane. The drinks were decently priced at $6-8. Cocktail was $17 which was just okay to me. Lastly for the dessert: they ran out of crepe cake so we only got the mochi bar to try and this was the perfect ending. Would definitely get it again. It's so nicely lit - Great for a date or 1-1 catchup - The crab fat fried rice was amazing! - I also really liked the vermicelli dish but it was so small - the sauce was so good! We had Bodega on our list for quite a while so were hyped to finally be able to give it a try. The aesthetic is not what I expected, lots of dark colored wood on the walls, floor and furniture. I assume at night time it had a dark and moody feel but, in the daytime, it made the interior look quite tired. Onto the food, we ordered the very popular Bun Cha and Shaking Beef. The Bun Cha was good but the Shaking Beef was great! So tender and marinated to perfection. My one big complaint is that the portion sizes are about 3/4 of what I would typically expect. Our waiter was attentive and took time to explain the dishes. Though it didn't quite meet the hype (for me), I'm glad I finally checked it off the list. read more

Makes for a cosy date place if you ignore the situation outside. **SERVICE: very friendly and they didn't force me to order and let me sit at my table for more than 20 mins or so while my dining partner was driving around trying to find parking. **FOOD: Modern elevated Vietnamese cuisine. *Lemongrass grilled wings-3.5/5- can be better especially with infusion of flavors, *Shaking beef:5/5- best dish on our table. Indulgence especially with the amount of butter used but well worth it. Flavors are splendid. *Hoi an chicken rice-4/5- broth was amazing. Rice was great. Bodega is a cute and small Vietnamese restaurant near Union Square. If you weren't looking for it specifically, it's easy to miss! I came here with a party of 5 to celebrate a birthday and we're sat at the very front in a large, comfortable booth. FOOD: We ordered a bunch of items on their menu, from Bo Tai Chanh, Banh Cuon, Bun Cha to the Bo Luc Lac. Everything was rich in flavor with healthy portion sizes. The crowd favorite was definitely the Bun Cha, which was deep in spices and ultimately leaving everyone wanting another order or even something to take home for the next day. SERVICE: The food came out quickly once we placed our order. Additionally, we celebrated a birthday and they added a candle to our dessert. The staff at Bodega made it even more special because they took a Polaroid of us as a souvenir. The garlic aioli banh mi sandwich is very savory and delicious. The banh mi bread is soft to the bite and not rough or overly crunchy. The beef tenderloin itself isn't doing much but the aioli spread saves it here. The sauce is sweet and enjoyable, but I think I prefer the sandwich better without it. Chose this for a girls day around the city, was not disappointed! While its neighborhood is sadly a little dicey, the vibe inside the restaurant more than makes up for it. It's cozy with lots of cute art and seating. We stayed for almost 2 hours and the staff was really accommodating, never made us feel rushed. Food was good, but unfortunately didn't have that extra WOW factor (hence minus 1 star). Again, want to reiterate that it was definitely great but I think it missed some of the oils/spices that Viet food traditionally has. The cocktails, however, DEFINITELY had that WOW! I would totally come back just for some cocktails and small apps if I lived nearby. It's a little pricey but not unfair. Walk-in on a Tuesday at 11am when they opened, pretty empty & no wait, they were busy when I left by 1pm but still open tables. FYI bar doesn't open til noon. * Origami ($18) - 5 stars. We visited Bodega on a Tuesday evening without a reservation, so we arrived right before opening. Luckily, we were able to grab two seats at the bar. Sitting at the bar ended up being the perfect choice. Service was quick, and the bartender was attentive and readily available throughout the night. We ordered a couple of drinks, several dishes, and dessert. For drinks, we tried the Banh Bo Gimlet and the Bodega Old Fashioned. The Banh Bo Gimlet was slightly sweet but refreshing, with a nice pandan flavor coming through at the end. The Bodega Old Fashioned was strong and tasty, although I didn't pick up much of the pho spice. For food, we ordered the Banh Khot, Bun Cha, Crab Fat Fried Rice, and Bo Luc Lac. For the Banh Khot, you can choose one piece with caviar for $16 or three pieces without caviar for $15. We opted for the three-piece order, and it was delicious. The exterior was perfectly crispy, although I wish it came with some nuoc mam on the side. The Bun Cha was our favorite dish of the night. The meatballs and pork belly were incredibly flavorful, especially with the fish sauce. The Crab Fat Fried Rice was also really good and came loaded with scallops. The other proteins were a little harder to identify, but the flavors reminded me of Chinese salted fish and chicken fried rice. The pickled long beans added a nice texture and balance to the dish. The Bo Luc Lac had an incredible depth of flavor. Paired with the sauce served on the side, it was chef's kiss. The bartender also offered us their Thai chili hot sauce, which went really well with the dish. The pearl onions were cooked perfectly, and a bite with all the components together was fantastic. My only complaint was that we ordered the beef medium rare, but it came out closer to well done. Although the meat was still tender, the texture was softer and slightly grainy, which wasn't my preference. For dessert, we ordered the Pandan Mochi Bar. The mochi bar is like a butter mochi. It was warm and topped with lychee gelato from Marco Polo. It was simple but satisfying. Overall, we really enjoyed our experience at Bodega. The food was thoughtful and flavorful. Very good bowl of chicken pho in a classy atmosphere. I came in for lunch on a cold day in SF. The restaurant was busy but not packed, so I was able to get seated right away. The atmosphere is classy - oak finishing, interesting artwork, and a mix of high and low-top tables. The service was good - quick and attentive. Now to the food... the broth of their pho ranks up there with the best I've had. It was rich and flavorful, and tasted freshly made. The only drawback was the amount of inedible parts of the chicken that hadn't been strained out of the broth. There were pieces of skin, gristle, and a few bones. I was able to avoid them, but it detracted from the overall experience. I would go back but I may try something else on the menu next time. read more

First time dining at Bodega San Francisco, and it was one of the best finds so far! The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, making for a great dining experience. I don't think the descriptions did a very good job of managing expectations for what we'd get, but it was delicious. Came by myself on a Wednesday at 2:00PM, and luckily there was no wait for a table. I heard that you should try to make a reservation if you try to come for dinner, but there were both bar and table options available at the time that I came. I ordered the bun cha and banh cuo to start with. They were both good, especially the bun cha. The charbroiled meat was tasty even, and the sauce was garlicky. What I didn't like about it is that the noodles were overcooked. As for the banh cuo, great dipping sauce and I liked the cooked bean sprouts they came in. I got the bodega beef pho as my entree and was a bit disappointed. I'm used to getting bean sprouts and maybe onions to add on, but neither were offered with the dish. I asked for sriracha and hoisin sauce only to be told that they don't have sriracha. I like my pho spicy! The broth was ok, it wasn't as rich as I had expected it to be, though it was oily. Good amount of meat pieces, some overcooked. They have a big tv and there was a soccer game going on. The waiters seemed to be more intrigued about the tv than the customers unfortunately. I found myself trying to have to get their attention as they didn't really check in with me. Overall, the bun cha was good despite its overcooked noodles. Would I come again? Probably not. read more

Honestly for the price that you pay in sf this place isn't bad! Nothing special and prolly better viet restaurants around the city but a solid choice if you happen to be in the area. The plates are tasty, lots of variety in meats, vegetables, and toppings with good portions too. Service is friendly and food comes out quick. Tried their pho hanoi and it was interesting! Not the typical "pho" flavors you would imagine but a fun smoky twist with tender meats which surprised me (in a good way) Only downside is that theres no service for some reason in the restaurant and the drinks that we got were so so. As a fan of their lunch, I was excited to try Bodega for dinner. They are currently on inKind, so I highly recommend going that route for the discount! While there were some definite highlights, this particular rotation of dishes wasn't my absolute favorite. Here is the breakdown of the meal: Appetizers Ahi Tuna ($19) - 5 stars: This was delicious and incredibly fresh. It had a deep umami flavor that made it a standout starter. Could've eaten the entire bowl myself. Banh Cuon ($16) - 3 stars: I loved the fresh bounchy texture of the rice rolls, but they had an herbal taste that I wasn't a huge fan of that specific flavor profile. Entrees Crab Fat Fried Rice ($36) - 5 stars: My favorite dish of the night. It was so comforting and flavorful, and the fish eggs on top were a great touch. Would order again! Bun Cha ($30) - 5 stars: Another winner. The sauce was packed with umami--it was so good I honestly wanted to drink it. Tom Rim Tiger Prawns ($29) - 3.5 stars: The prawns were giant, fresh, and high quality. However, they felt a bit overcooked and lacked a tender texture. "Thit Kho" Mushrooms ($19) - 1 star: These were prepared with an oyster sauce that was unfortunately way too sweet. Dessert Pandan Mochi ($14): 5 stars--I loved this. The lychee ice cream on top was refreshing, not too sweet, and had a perfect, mild lychee taste. Panna Cotta ($14) - 3.5 stars: The texture was very delicate and well-made, though I personally didn't enjoy the red bean pairing. Overall The Vietnamese coffee ($8) looked great, and I would have ordered it if it weren't so late in the evening. Came on a Thursday night 6pm and the only seat available for walk in was the bar table which was fine since it's me and another friends. We ordered 2 dishes to share: Papaya beef jerky salad: we were so shocked there was so much papaya in this salad that we got full quickly from this but lacked having enough beef jerky. Got a reservation around 7 on a Saturday it was pretty busy but the service was great. I didn't have super high expectations coming in but wow the food was so good! This review is for lunch menu only. The place is SUPER busy so reservation is must. We came for a holiday monday lunch and the receptionist just kept handing out takeouts, and our waiter was no where to be found when we needed to pack and get the check. It was, unpleasant. On top of that, when we packed to go I was hoping they'd pack the sauce that comes with the fried chicken and pork chop and they didn't (not a new one, just what we had left). Parking was also extremely difficult on a Monday noon. Found one street parking spot 8 mins walk away. Now onto the food. There were a couple items that were pretty good: the chicken wings, the pork chop, both of which taste better with the dipping sauce. The chicken salad was pretty good (so my partner said coz I didnt eat any of that). The beef pho was a bit of a disappointment: not that it tastes bad or anything, but the meat portion is just the least I've seen in a Vietnamese restaurant, I was almost just eating the noodles. Overall I would give a four star for the above average food quality, but I will probably not revisit because of the below average experience. read more

Came here on a Saturday for lunch and didn't have a reservation so sat at the bar. Ordered the banh cuon, bun cha, kace fruit tea - apple jasmine flavor, and pho Hanoi. The dishes were pretty good, the pho Hanoi was unique in that it came with Chinese donuts. Dishes were flavorful and I've never heard of kace fruit tea, but it is a very refreshing and not too sweet canned drink. The service was okay, a bit slow. We were really disappointed because we were too full and decided to take the banh cuon to go as we thought we don't need a microwave for this item and it would be easier to take back to the hotel. They helped us pack our food which we had a whole order of and barely touched because we were too full and unfortunately, they did not include the fish sauce when they packed it for us, which is very much needed for the rice rolls. Nice vibes great service wasn't actually that busy on a Friday evening ~8 didn't end up needing reservations could've just walked in The blue fin tartare and bun cha both slapped - really great umami-packed flavors with good textures (tuna had nice chew not too mush) and the pork in the bun cha had nice crisp without being too dry. Micro greens in tartare were really refreshing and balanced the savoriness, bun cha came with lots of greens and vermicelli on the side so it doesn't get soggy in the soup. then the pho ap chao was decent. Never had this dish before so was interesting to try. Noodles were a bit soggy but maybe that's intentional? read more

The sauce was a little tô sweet for me. - Bò né: was a huge letdown. They didn't marinate the beef, which was the whole point. I had a very high bar for bò né since my home in D4, HCMC is close to a legendary spot. I asked them for soy sauce cos if not, I wouldn't be able to continue my lunch. - Spring roll with nem nuong was pretty good, not Brodard level but I will take this. If you've been to Nha Trang and tried nem nướng Ninh Hoà, you will never ever order the plain shrimp spring roll again. - Lemongrass pork chop was surprisingly good. Well marinated. Went for lunch with a friend and made a reservation a few days in advance, though it's definitely easier to get a table at lunchtime than in the evening. The menu is very appealing overall, but there were quite a few pork-based options that I don't eat. I ended up ordering the vegan noodles, which I enjoyed, even if the broth was slightly on the sweet side. My friend ordered the bánh cuốn and absolutely loved it. Was able to queue before opening to snag a seat at the bar. Lots of people waiting for a bar seat it was a good idea to come early! We came for lunch and ordered a good amount of the menu. All the food was very clean tasting, light in flavor and felt healthy Our favorites had to be the lemongrass chicken wings as well at the pork chops. All the pho comes with wide flat rice noodles for a more homey soothing bite. We tried both the pho Hanoi and the pho ga, of the two the beef felt a little more hefty. How fancy! Banh khot caviar! The banh khot was delicious. The cupcake was light and crispy with a hint of coconut, the shrimp was soft and succulent, all wrapped in a tiny lettuce cup. The caviar atop looked nice, but didn't add much taste wise. We enjoyed the kale and avocado salad. The ingredients were very fresh with a tangy vegetarian nuoc mam dressing. The sea bass was cooked perfectly. Moist, tender with a nice golden pan fry on the bottom. I loved the sauce and dressing on the Bo Luc lac and the potatoes were out of this world! I made sure to get a little beef with a little pearl onion in every bite. Delicious! The beef was a bit on the dry, tough side if I'm being honest. One of the daily specials, the crab with mung bean noodle sounded promising, but we were disappointed with this one. Got dinner with my friend here yesterday. Was trying to do an open table reservation but didn't book the time I want in time. Luckily I came by 15 minutes after they open and got some bar seats. The menu was fun with a lot of unique take on Vietnamese street food classic. Got my sugar cane with calamansi juice. It was good and my friend got the mango spritzer. Had to try the uni bánh bèo. Its a trio. The uni work pretty well with the fish sauce though it was literally gone in seconds. Excited for Bún chả. Now I recently had BCHN last week as a delivery from a local restaurant near me so it's hard not to compare. The sauce and the meat was good. But feel like some of the herbs and veggies could be more , like I want to drown in herbs. The proportion of noodle to veggies to meat ratio is kinda not balance like they could do with more veggies and noodle and less meat The eggplant with tofu is ok it wasn't a favorite of mine. Squab was also decent but didn't wow me but the onion bits that came with it was interesting I did use the lemon salt dipping sauce with the squab too. Best thing of the night was the dessert. I came here a few years ago and had the tasting menu. This time, it was a casual family-style dinner with friends. The atmosphere is pretty cool with lots of warm woods and a bar in the center; we were seated at a hightop table, but there are multiple options. It's nice inside and the servers were quite attentive, too. I appreciated the upscale Vietnamese flavors and presentation, but note that it's not a great menu for vegans. Here's what we got... Banh Cuon: These are fresh rice rolls. I think folks were expecting something more like a spring roll, but I liked the tenderness of the outer roll and the contrast with the ground pork and wood ear mushroom textures. Nem Cua: Pretty good with rice noodles on the side. Crisp and flavorful with the fragrant greens. Crab Fried Rice: This was a pleasant surprise! I wasn't expecting a whole lot, but it had a lot of crab flavor and richness. With masago on the top, it's actually quite decadent. Braised Tofu Egglplant: This was pretty good and well prepared, if a little less interesting than our other dishes. Mac Khen Lamb Chops: Excellent. Fatty, slightly charred, and tender with a delicious sauce and little gem hearts underneath. read more

A solid place to grab a meal but be careful it can get packed very quick despite there being a decent amount of seating. Service was good despite the busyness. Nice decor as well inside and clean. Food was good but something about the food was missing in taste. Don't get me wrong it was good but it was just ok. We ordered the spring rolls and that's probably the food that most made me ponder for a second but the food was still good. Wings were good but still just ok.
