We have been going here since the original place which was in Valley Stream. When we moved to Oceanside we went in and i said this place feels like the restaurant my parents used to bring me to when i was little. Sure enough we ordered the burger and it was a bite of nostalgia!! Exactly the same and now they are back. Only a block away from where they first opened in Oceanside. My family is happy. I was once a regular patron here, but I'm sorry to say -- I experienced food poisoning at Mitchell's. I ordered the Broiled Salmon while I had a taste of my husband's Chicken & Steak Teriyaki and my daughter's Chicken Madeira. It was all very delicious -- especially the Chicken & Steak Teriyaki, but at night, I felt nauseous and sick. The next morning, my stomach yield, heaved, and I vomited everything I ate last night. (Sorry for the unsightly visual, but that's what happened) Mitchell clearly needs to work on its food cleanliness. As the rating suggest: "Meh. I've experienced better." Sightly overpriced diner fare in a slightly upscale environment. It's a lot cleaner and prettier than most diners but the food is merely OK and the portions are small compared to what they give you elsewhere. I have gotten bigger portions of food, of similar to better quality, at a cheaper price in other diners. In my opinion this place is nothing special. I think nostalgia and familiarity makes Mitchel's seem fantastic to others, which is great for them if they enjoy it. To newcomers, I suggest you get a meal elsewhere, however you can still have a decent meal here. Overall, this is not the first place that would come to my mind when I want to go out to eat. I have been coming here for years and there are very compelling reasons that keep me coming back. Compared to other diners on LI, this place feels like the complete family owned experience. Growing up on Long Island, diners are a dime a dozen. Mitchells is feels different from all the others and this much is obvious even at first glance. It has recently been remodeled and what a breath of fresh air. Light colors on the interior and a very classic simple facade. Mitchells feels light and airy inside but still manages to keep that old diner feeling. Be sure to check out the interactive jelly tiles on the way to the bathroom!! The owners clearly know how to treat & greet their customers and make you feel appreciated every time. Overall the service is great. Sure, the people are nice and the place is clean, but how about the food? Just like any diner, there is an expansive menu and everyone can always get what they want. I usually get the same old same (omelet, soup & salad) and it does not disappoint. It is always cooked to perfection and every bite is delicious. Special mention to the Spanakopita and banana split (homemade ice cream!). They do it right. This place is definitely off the beaten path but is well worth the trip. read more

A piece of suburban history, Mitchell's is one of the oldest businesses on Rockaway Avenue in Valley Stream. Anyone who knows Valley Stream knows that Rockaway is the place to be for business. How has it stuck around for so long? It's convenient, reasonably priced, has heeping portions, and a great wait staff. Ah, Mitchell's. A Valley Stream institution. If you live in this town or come from here, you know Mitchell's well. It's like an Uncle in restaurant form. The food here is your typical diner fare. You've got your breakfast, eggs, bacon, pancakes, waffles. You've got your lunch, grilled cheese, quesadillas, burgers, sandwiches. And you've got your dinner, steaks, soups, salads, seafood. The breakfast is pretty decent. It's nothing special, but I don't have any complaints. The lunch is OK. I've had the quesadillas, ok. I had a chicken sandwich there once and I was sorely disappointed with that. They remodeled the place recently so it is pretty clean and new. The booths are comfortable and a good size for 4 people. The service is good, you get sat down quickly and the wait staff is attentive and quick. I've only had one bad experience with this place and it was a WHILE ago. About 6 years ago I went here with my friends at night for a late dinner. I had a chicken sandwich and split some ice cream for dessert. Our waiter was very crude and obese. He kept burping and farting (I assume), he was just very gassy. He spoke like we were bothering him and it was clear that he didn't want to be there. When he gave us the ice cream, it was already mostly melted. The bill came out to more than any of us were expecting and we didn't have much money left over to tip. It turned out that we had JUST enough for the bill and only 1 extra dollar for his tip. He was not happy with this and ambushed us at the exit as we were leaving. He interrogated us and tried to figure out why he got such a bad tip. At first we tried to explain to him that we just ran out of money but as he kept arguing with us, we told him that his service wasn't great as he kept burping at us. He told us to never come back. Well, that guy got fired so nuts to him! If you're from Valley Stream, you don't need a review to tell you about this place. But if you're from elsewhere, I suggest giving this place a try. This is a diner with typical diner offerings. The service was very friendly. I tried their steak sandwich and it was bland. The menu tells you it's served on a garlic roll but mine came on a regular roll. My bf got the corn beef open sandwich and it was also very bland. The place recently got a much needed facelift which has really improved business. The food is typical diner food, but much better than your average diner. Prices are fair, the staff is friendly, and the portions are massive. Mitchell's is open late which is great if you're in the mood for some late night food with nowhere else to go. What also makes Mitchell's special is that they have a large dessert selection, and they make their ice cream homemade. Some of the best ice cream around (rivaled with Itgen's just a block away). First, the ambiance is a great combination of comfortable (great seating and warm welcome from the owners) and upscale (well-lit, lovely mosaics). This place has been here forever. Came here years ago but as our kids left the nest we forgot all about this family business. Food is good not great but satisfying. We had a delivery tonight and although it wasn't perfect we were happy. We have come for breakfast and lunch so the best way to describe the entire experience is they are dependable! Been to Mitchell's forever, never really had any complaints, we love this place, a reliable restaurant to go to. Today my wife ordered a steak, medium, she got one well done. We told the waiter, to which he said that the steak she got was medium and that if we wanted some pink on the steak that we have to specifically order "medium pink". I told him even medium well has a little bit of pink on it. He reluctantly took the steak back, saying that now he has to pay for it out of his own pocket. A new steak came back, it looked like the chef rushed the way it was cooked, burnt outside rare and bloody inside. The waiter took it back to have it cooked some more. In the end, the steak tasted burned and bitter. The picture I've attached is after it was cooked some more. My biggest gripe is about how the waiter was insisting that if we wanted pink in the meat that we have to order the meat cooked pink. Really? !!!!! While there is nothing special about this diner, it is always consistent and the service is pretty good for the amount of traffic that the diner receives. Went here because of the reviews but was disappointed. I ordered the challah bread French toast which is was undercooked and chewy. I added fresh strawberries which were additional $3 and they weren't the freshest. My daughter's pancakes and my home fries were okay but they had a slight burnt taste like the grill wasn't very clean.
