Mitchell's was a frequent dining spot for me back when I lived on Long Island, and even now I try to return any time I'm back in the area. The food is consistently solid, service is friendly, and there is a certain classiness following their renovation a couple years ago that makes it feel nicer than ever. I'll admit that I have a love for diners in general, because I'm immediately happy with anyplace that I allows me to an omelet and toasted toast at all hours of the day. However, at Mitchell's I've often branched out to other, more elaborate dishes and have never been disappointed. The salmon dinner I had at my last visit was especially fresh and flavorful. I've been to lots of diners in my days in LI, but to me this one just feels a bit better, and a bit more like home to me. While some may be intimidated about the many options, one of my favorite things about Mitchell's is that the menu is SO BG! Fellow yelping buddy Harold and I have counted at least 67 different items we'd like to try. So will I be back? Roger that! Maybe even this Sunday to catch some of the 49er game on one of their many HD TVs. Overall, I would recommend Mitchell's to anyone for a nice, casual meal in a warm, friendly environment whether you're in the mood for Breakfast, Lunch, or Dina. read more

I went here for a Sunday brunch. Typically, I love this place and the service is amazing. However, this time was a bit different experience. I walked in and the restaurant was packed. I walked up to the hostess to ask about the wait time, but she completely ignored me. She carried on with her conversation as if I wasn't standing there. I finally got her attention long enough to ask how long the wait time would be and she responded, "all tables are full right now." Thank you for stating the obvious. But, thankfully the rest of my experiences there were a lot better than the initial greeting. A few minutes later, the owner walked over and personally sat us down. He was pleasant. The food is always good. This time around, we ordered the Benjamin Franklin (chicken on toasted garlic bread) and french toast with an omelet and bacon. Delicious! Our waiter Alonso, was great. I love Mitchell's! I frequently either get take out or delivery. They have great customer service and great food. Their soups are wonderful and they change by the day. Sun/Wed turkey soup Sat is seafood and daily French onion yummy. I also enjoy their wraps and sandwiches. They give very generous portions. read more

I'm from california, and we don't really have old-school diners out there (Denny's don't count). Somehow ended up in Valley Stream in time for lunch, and wandered in here. It looks like it got a recent face-lift, but kept a lot of the old diner touches, which I totally appreciate. The reason I am giving it such high marks is that, for its class, this is pretty spot on for what I'd expect and want from a diner. They have the requisite old lady servers (some surly, some nice) and the elderly guy at the front. The portions are massive, and the menu has the right amount of variety. Not to mention the fact that they actually have really good veggie burgers! (good veggie burgers at a diner? yes!) The lentil soup was a bit on the salty side, but otherwise, this place serves up all the fried standards. All are done well, and in a clean environment. This is one of the first diners I ever remember going to when I first moved to Long Island so Mitchell's has a special place in my heart. My Dad and I would frequent this place fairly often for early morning breakfasts. Despite the nostalgia factor, Mitchell's is different than it used to be. The place received some renovation, which is a plus, making it appear more of an upscale kind of place, though I'd be lying if I didn't miss how it used to look either. It had a very welcoming kind of atmosphere that I don't quite notice as much now even if it looks "better." The prices have also jumped quite a bit higher than they once were; way too much to be exact. Don't be fooled by the spiffy new look; you're still getting diner food and only average food at that. The breakfasts are decent but the portions could stand to be bigger. Friendly staff and service is fine so no problems on that front. I don't know when I'll head back over to Mitchell's, but chances are I'd go once every couple of years if only for the nostalgia. You can get better food for a better price elsewhere and if I could I would give Mitchell's an in the middle 2 1/2 stars. read more

Nice little diner. Had a few big TV so you can relax and watch your baseball team. A had a great server. As soon as I sat down he was there taking care of us. My issue was with the food. It was ok, not great. But all in all a good place to stop in and get a bite. read more

The diner is fine. However I think it's beyond ridiculous to charge 6.99 for a scoop of ice cream and call it a sundae. The sad dish of ice cream had barely any whipped cream and was a flat as the horizon. When this was brought to the managers attention it was rudely dismissed. Truly sad as Mitchell's is my child's favorite restaurant and we went to the old location often. We will no longer be dining here. Management should value the concerns of customers. This is only my second review and I am really new at it. But here goes. My husband and I eat hereat least once a week (sometimes more) and we always receive great service from everyone associated with this restaurant. The servers are great, always get our order right, refill our coffee regularly and check in to see if we need anything. Kudos to one great place to eat. read more

I go here frequently for there breakfast they have upped there prices 33% which is disappointing because it makes it harder for a frequent goer like myself to afford it. They may want to add a punch card where you can get a discount or something for free when you go 5-10 times. But the people here are absolutely the sweetest,great staff. Don't recommend at all.... the is a waitress there that thinks he can talk to people however he wants and get away with it. always call in the morning to place a pick up order and he will usually school me as to how I should say my order. until one day he told me he was to busy to take my order and told me what time I should call when they are not busy and to top it off he hang up the phone on me. read more

This is probably the best diner in the area. The service can be a little slow, but the food is better than your standard diner grub. It's a little pricy, but tastes fresh with clean flavors and is always well presented. Unlike at nearby greasy spoons, you can pick anything off the menu and probably won't be disappointed, at least not with the quality. The matzo ball soup is memorably good as are the quesadillas and signature salads. The staff are super friendly and they're open 365 days. Only thing is, don't bother with delivery. It's been quite a few years since I've been here. The place has received a much needed face lift. On Monday and Tuesday nights they have a dinner special which includes 2 soups, 2 salads 2 entrees, 2 non alcoholic drinks and 2 desserts.........all for $27.95. Was curious about this place for quite some time. Walked in and it's a fancy diner; it's clean and nice. The food was average and the staff was friendly enough. I had an eggplant panini; it was a little dry. The fries were just the right amount and were not too soft and not too hard. In fact they were perfect. I've driven/rode past this place for years...and last week was my first time stopping in. Must admit...I was mildly impressed. The staff was very friendly and the restaurant was airy, brightly lit and spotless. It has a really nice "feel" to it. Like most diners, the menu is quite extensive and the prices reasonable. I'd score my lunch an 8 out of ten. My dessert (Fried Ice Cream) was a 10! Deeelicious!!! I'll definitely be going back to try another sandwich and later dinner. An update may be coming soon! UPDATE: Mitchell's no longer sells their magnificent "Fried Ice Cream". A major disappointment. I was told it wasn't a big seller. Too bad. read more

One of Valley Streams oldest eateries, so I checked it out. Its a good place to goto when you are hungry and not sure what you want to eat. The menu has many options to choose from. I'm new to New York.... Went to Mitchell's with the family. First let me say the customer service was awesome. Most places here carry the typical New York attitude. But this place has a southern hospitality feel. The food is good and the setting is social, good for the family or a breakfast date.They are quick to seat you and serve you and awesome on refills. I like the look of the place, clean and modern. But usually have to wait a bit for service after sit down even when not busy. The food delivery time is ok. It's a place if not in a rush and are not paying attention to time, otherwise it's good. Parking can be a challenge so watch your areas and check signs. They do have handicapped parking spots in front of dinner. When I'm in the area I rather come here than IHOP ! read more

I was absolutely horrified when I went in to pick up food I had called in. None of the staff were wearing masks including the cook at the grill you could see in the back. One or 2 of the waiters had masks over their mouths but not wearing them over there noses, they clearly don't take this seriously. Absolutely will never be going back to this restaurant. read more

Soup is great and food is always hot even when delivered! When working in Valley Stream, the options for lunch are limited and Mitchell's is one of our few go-tos for lunch. If I'm working alone, it's a little difficult to meet the $15 minimum necessary to have them deliver but other than that, I love this place. My sister took me to breakfast here this morning. As we were sitting and having a conversation I saw out of the corner of my eye a roach climbing on the wall in front of us. We quickly moved out seat and sat at a table. As the waiter started to pour our coffee we told him what we just saw. All he said was I'm sorry. Celebrated my dad's 94th birthday at Mitchells in Valley Stream yesterday. The staff and owners went above and beyond to make my dad's day so special. The food was fabulous!!! The staff couldn't have been better. There meals from breakfast to dinner that we ordered were delicious and the portions were huge.
